This week the boys are back in town and they've got an itch to converse.  This episode starts off with some hot talk about some chonky dogs with some bad attitudes that brought out the best/worst of Old Man Doug.  This leads to a conversation on some of Doug's parenting highlights.  As Doug is talking about things he'd like to instill in his daughter, talk of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics comes up and a can of worms is opened. A long standing argument about what is and isn't a sport comes up and the whole chat gets in on it, emergency farts come out, and chaos ensues.  The conversation eventually drifts to the ethics and feeling surrounding this Olympiad, all while the chat tries to draw him back to what makes a sport.  The episode concludes with an epic battle (that almost didn't make it on time) pitting Segata Sanshiro against The Old Spice Guy (Terry Crews Variant).  This epic battle can only have one winner and if you want to find out who it is you'll have to tune in now won't you? A Dog's Purpose meets The Happy Ever After Playlist in this charming, pitch-perfect take on relationships as seen through the eyes of a wise pug named Doug, who is determined to play cupid to fix his owner's love life with his own four paws. Doug wants his rescuer, Julie, to be happy. He is loyal and loves her unconditionally—two things that can't be said about Julie's married boss and lover, Luke. Yet Julie is reluctant to break up, afraid to end up like her eccentric cat-owning neighbor. It's a prospect that horrifies Doug, too. Newly divorced Tom, on the other hand, is perfect for Julie. Everyone can see it—except for Julie and Tom. Doug is confident that with his help they will get over their initial animosity toward each other. As Doug humorously navigates the quirks of human relationships, he knows he can't give up on Julie—after all, being a “rescue” works both ways.

Hello again from Houston, Texas.  Welcome to the second half of my day with Doug Harris — a proud Houstonian and old friend who is taking me around his beloved city. If you missed the release of Part I last week then be sure to give it a listen to get up to speed with my time in Houston with Doug Harris. Let's jump back into it. LAKEWOOD CHURCH  Doug and I continue our adventures through the city in Doug's car, and he takes me to a popular site in the city: Lakewood Church. The building was previously called the Summit (subsequently changed to Compact Center before becoming Lakewood Church), a 17,000-seater venue that used to be the home ground for the Houston Rockets NBA team. It is also where Doug saw ZZ Top and Aerosmith perform live a few years prior, but now it is a very large place for worship. Lakewood Church and Joel Osteen are on all the social media platforms: there's an app, a podcast, and a very slick website where they also live stream that includes a webshop with books from Joel and his wife Victoria, and his mother Dodie. HOLY FATHER AND HIS SON The church was founded by Joel's father, Paster John Osteen, and Joel worked in the background as a TV producer up until his father passed away. When that happened, he stepped up and assumed the role of Senior Pastor at Lakewood Church.  I went to their website and saw a video from a sermon a few weeks ago. It does not look or sound like a regular church. As Doug said, it's an arena with 17,000 seats that starts with a band on stage with lights and a cheering audience. The production itself is very professional. It's like watching X-Factor or a big award show with several camera angles. Then Joel and his wife take the stage. With 17,000 people in the church arena and I don't know how many listening on Sirius XM satellite radio in North America, and a global audience watching the live stream, it's certainly not your average church experience. It is very different from what I grew up with in Denmark, where there would be just a handful of people in my local church on a regular Sunday. TRADITIONAL TEXAS BBQ Doug then took me to one of his favourite places for lunch, Charlies BBQ, where I got to taste some real Texan barbecue. He's a regular there and he introduces me to some of the staff, making me feel welcome and special. We sat down at the grill and the guy behind it who happens to be the owner, Fote Demires, recommended I try the brisket and sausage as they are the most popular choices (apart from the ribs of course). He tells me that brisket is a staple in Texas, and if you head further east, they enjoy pulled pork. After consuming a big plate of various tasty BBQ flavours, I carry on my chat with Fote. “We've been in the BBQ business since before my time — some 60 years. As part of the second generation, I have been involved in operations for 30 years, taking over from my parents. My parents came from Greece and decided to open a BBQ shop because, well, it's Texas. We've infused a bit of our Greece culture into the menu over the years, we offer gyros and make our own tzatziki.” After a delicious lunch, Doug and I get back in the car and continue our Houston road trip adventure. REMEMBER THE ALAMO Doug tells me that Houston was named after Sam Houston, the first president of Texas and general of the Texas army. Texas used to be an independent republic that was once under the dominance of Mexico. After declaring independence from Mexico, the Mexican government sent a large army led by Antonio López de Santa Anna to attack Texas in bitter retaliation.  Despite Santa Anna being an accomplished military tactician, he underestimated the strength of the Texan army led by Colonel William Barret Travis, who called for volunteers to assist his men in warding off the Mexican army's attacks. Famous American frontiersman and folk hero Davy Crockett joined the cause where he and his volunteers took the famous stand at the Battle of the Alamo — a 13-day siege where they battled against thousands of Mexican soldiers in 1836 in San Antonio, Texas,  “The critical purpose of the Battle of the Alamo was that it gave Sam Houston time to train his Texan troops by the Gulf of Mexico to launch a surprise attack on Antonio López de Santa Anna's men. One afternoon while the Mexican army was taking a siesta, Houston's men surprise-attacked and took the Mexican soldiers as prisoners. Apparently, de Santa Anna removed his general's uniform as to not be identified by the Texas army, but his cover was blown when one of his men called him ‘generalissimo'”.  The story with Davy Crockett and the Alamo is something I'll dive more into when I visit San Antonio in a couple of weeks. It's fascinating so stay tuned. YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS As folklore has it, Antonio López de Santa Anna had a mixed-heritage concubine who was with him during this time. Due to her mixed-heritage, she had what locals called ‘yellow skin' and she is the inspiration for the famous folk song The Yellow Rose of Texas.  DOUG THE MUSIC MAN And speaking of music, Doug is the kind of guy who always goes around with music in his head, and he is always humming and singing. I never noticed it before my visit, but as we're leaving his office he was humming in the elevator and singing while walking out to his car.  And he doesn't seem to mind that there are people around him. He's not shy at all and kept singing when we met other people in the freight elevator (great acoustics in there by the way) while maybe adding a “howya doin'?” between the verse and the chorus. He really spreads joy and smiles around him all the time. Doug takes me to yet another impressive place, named after the city's founder, the Sam Houston Race Park. It's a famous horse racing track that also has a large paddock that plays host to music concerts throughout the year. It's a prominent tourist attraction in Houston. Many big country music stars have performed here. Doug strikes me more of a classic rock fan than a country music fan. To this he responded: “Well, I'm a rocker — I was raised in the 60s and 70s on The Beatles, The Yardbirds, and Jimi Hendrix. Plus I made my bones in rock radio. I had a garage band back in those days and our bass player was a little-known actor called Dennis Quaid. But even though I'm a rocker, it would be silly not to enjoy some great songs from other genres and performers. And country music has some classic performers, like Willie Nelson and Bob Wills. So, I like all music because I'm a student of human nature. But I'm not a huge hip-hop fan. If I can sing along to it on the radio, then I enjoy it.” HOMEWOOD SUITS BY HILTON Doug found a hotel for me and was able to strike a deal with them for a better rate. It's a Homewood Suites by Hilton, and it's very artistic with a big mural on the wall behind the pool and a lot of art in the lobby. I meet Bruce from the hotel and wants him to tell me more about the place. It's in a part of the city that is more a corporate area with a lot of big companies and to me, it's not the obvious location for a hotel. “There was a need for a Hilton in this part of town, and in the short period of time that we have been open, we have seen the true value of our presence in this area. We are definitely more of a corporate-focused hotel. Our owners have tried to install more of a boutique flavour through the artwork they have installed. All of the art that you see on the walls is done by Mr. D of Houston, known as ‘Houston's largest muralist', who also did the hotel's exterior murals.”  Bruce was kind enough to show me around the 125-room hotel, including the outdoor kitchen, firepit, and another Mr. D mural hand-painted specifically for selfies. He showed me to my suite which was beautiful and very large.  MORE ADVENTURES WITH DOUG I got to hang out with Doug some more the next day. We went to an art gallery opening, and I followed his recommendation to visit the National Museum of Funeral History where I got to learn about caskets and coffins, hearses through history, plus the funerals of Presidents, Popes, and celebrities. They also had a gift shop selling caps, mugs, t-shirts, and magnets saying something like: “Any day above ground is a good one”. A really weird and kinda morbid place. But interesting… NEXT STOP: LOCKHART I'm so glad I got to spend some time with my old friend Doug and can't wait to see him again soon somewhere in the world. Maybe we'll share a room again, purely in the “interest of camaraderie and economics”. That's it from Houston. Now I'm heading back to Austin and returning the cool convertible sports car to Gary, and then heading a bit south of the city to the little town called Lockhart, where I'm housesitting. Well, it's actually not in Lockhart but in a nice little house in the countryside – with dangerous snakes in the grass, and next to a noisy rooster farm with deaf owners. My name is Palle Bo, and I got to keep moving. See you.

We are kicking off our new series, Secrets of a Centered Soul with pastors, spiritual directors, and Enneagram trainers Doug and Adele Calhoun. They share how the Enneagram is a tool that helps us better understand ourselves so we can know better how to connect with God. As Doug says in the episode, "So much about the spiritual life is about awareness." The Enneagram helps us become more aware of our blind spots, patterns, and false narratives so that we can put on the new identity that Christ offers his flock. We go through the "not enough narrative" of each Enneagram number and which spiritual practices can help each number better connect to God's heart. This new series is about tools and frameworks you can use in your everyday life to live with a centered soul. One that is centered on Christ. What “disqualifies us” actually qualifies us.As Doug puts it: We’re growing or we’re dying. We have to evolve and use the tools we’re given along the way to improve ourselves. “Healed” doesn’t mean you’re perfect, or that when things come up you’ll undoubtedly get through it. Sometimes life throws you curveballs and there’s healing that comes through the reevaluation of the self. I’ve got more work to do. Every adversarial situation can be used for the greater good if we have enough self-awareness, courage, and balls to do the work. Many times, our inner victim comes out and wants to blame everyone else, making our problems bigger than they actually are. When we realize there’s purpose in our pain, it changes the dynamic of that pain and we can feel empowered to come through to the other side. Being triggered is an opportunity for growth.Oftentimes, what’s triggering you has nothing to do with what’s actually going on. To be courageous enough to say those situations are conduits for change is POWERFUL.Doug’s StoryDoug was 20 when he realized he needed to change. He was numbing a lot of the pain he was feeling—first with food and then with drugs—developing a victim mindset early on due to bullying and a troubling family dynamic. Ultimately, he ended up being sentenced to months in jail due to being found guilty of possession with intent to sell.As Doug describes it, his biggest blessing came out of one of his biggest setbacks. Due to his arrest, he met his cellmate who helped him find fitness and use his time locked up to beat some demons and reinvent himself. How To Close More Deals Using Videos Throughout The Sales Process   Closing deals using videos is now becoming a very effective tool in the sales process. As a salesperson and an entrepreneur, we'll talk about how you can incorporate videos into your sales goals.    Doug Davidoff works with companies in the B2B space around customer acquisition and success programs. They examine a company's sales structure to figure out how to build it in a way that's scalable, repeatable, a high probability yield, high-margin, and high-growth.  Because of this, a sales team can get more done in less time.    The beginning  Doug started working for the company when he was just 16 years old, around the same time when he got his driver's license. Back then, they were focused on traditional sales advisory sales training. For the last seven years, they've been looking into the holistic process of customer acquisition. Every three years, they reinvent themselves in an effort to make it easier for companies to work with ease and efficiency.    It was difficult when they first started using videos. They were among the first companies who were utilizing this new tech and there were only a handful of examples  they could use as reference. Doug came up with the idea of making videos the same way as he made webinars, breaking them down into 3 sections. Next to blogging, it was by far his greatest accidental discovery.   If you decide to work with videos, know that it may not yield immediate results.  Doug didn't start with video thinking it would enhance the process. There is a lot of divergence when it comes to what people know about using video, what they are looking for, and what they want to accomplish.  Because of this, initial conversations were hard because it was hard to tell a client the specific impact to their sales. Nowadays, with more history, it is easier to see that video is very effective.    Creating the videos  Doug began creating a 20-minute long video for a presentation and later went to an hour, sometimes longer, as needed. Doug's colleagues advised that prospects wouldn't watch videos that were this long but Doug wasn't to be deterred. As Doug gained a greater skill set and his videos improved, the more the videos were shared among key people within the companies he was targeting. This sharing process enabled Doug's team to know who the key figures, influencers, and decision makers were within these companies. They began seeing that people were watching their videos even before they got to their kick-off.  These prospects were watching and using their videos to socialize and share various ideas. This was how they decided to use their videos in segments that could be dropped in each part of the sales process, from market development to customer acquisition.    The video sales process How a customer is moved through the video process largely depends on how the customer finds Doug.  The first video is typically post-discovery where they let their prospects watch any number of videos that are connected to solution pages.    They've also tried running a couple of campaigns where they connect to prospects who are difficult to reach by giving them shorter versions of their videos. They ask these recipients to share their top three biggest challenges and Doug's team then sends a 2-4 minute video that addresses these challenges. This strategy is used during the pre-discovery and discovery process, needs assessment diagnosis, and so on.    Using videos in sales Doug has been told that videos won't work in sales but he's proven this isn't true. If you are a salesperson presenting a topic consistently, you can save time by putting that presentation into a video.  If you prefer initial contact to be live, you can still utilize video in the follow-up. Doing a concept video is also encouraged.        With great editing, the best thing about video is that you get to be yourself, without mistakes. You can also send the video before the sales call and then ask them what part of the video had the most impact on them. This will give you an idea of what you can do for next steps and you'll be able to gauge if the video was watched at all. If they did watch the video, the conversation will show you how to prepare for any follow-up conversations.    When you offer a video, your prospects are able to watch you at their convenience. It gives them time to think and prepare for your call as well.    Prospect conversions using videos  Doug doesn't claim the videos are the only thing that leads to closing a sale but it is a great indicator.  Video helps to detect how serious someone is about starting a buying journey. Even when people don't watch the video, you can do more by investigating further: Maybe they don't believe the video is working. Maybe their  problem isn't a huge concern. Maybe it's not a good time/ Maybe they're in the middle of a crisis that needs to be addressed first.    Videos give you information about the buyer. It allows you to gain greater insight and use your time more effectively. When you free up time, you're able to close more deals. Doug found out that people loved the video strategy. It is difficult to get people on the phone but Doug's team saw how these videos could get beyond CFOs. As people got to be a part of how they got information, meeting opportunities grew.    What should be in the videos  There are three videos that everyone must have. The first video is the Problem Video Challenge. When you help a client understand what the problem is, it helps to separate you from your competition. How they define the problem determines how they're going to behave.  This first video is all about communicating the real problem, why it's a problem, and why it's so hard to solve.   The second video is the Story Video. It's both yours and the clients' story, with the client being the origin of that story. In the second video you address how you're going to solve the problem. You can have multiple problems and story videos depending on who you're talking to and what the context of the situation is.    The third video is the Three-Minute Brief. It's a video where you need to have multiple versions. This video is where you're going to lay-out everything including the action points you want to talk about and how they can impact your client's goals. Video is definitely a medium you can use to become a more flexible salesperson. The more you do the better you will get.    Video is not the cure-all but it is a medium and tactic that gives you the flexibility to do what you're trying to do. #SalesVideos   “How To Close More Deals Using Videos Throughout The Sales Process” episode resources Get in touch with Doug. As Doug and I wrap up this section we get more into our personal stories and how those 'unworkable' moments forced us to question our long standing patterns of  behavior, reactions, defenses, and beliefs. No growth comes without challenge, and these are the times when descending into lower levels of health can occur without observing and questioning. It's our awareness that gives us the choice to withdraw the boundaries or expand them opening us to know a deeper love and freedom. The journey of growth that is one that we must take on our own but not alone. Growth in any relationship requires communication, and if we want to grow together we must communicate. As Gordon Lightfoot bemoaned in his song from 1970 entitled, "If You Could Read My Mind", 'what a tale my thoughts could tell'. Well guess what? No one is a mind reader. We must open the lines of communication. The Enneagram and Spiral Dynamics are both beautiful maps of self discovery. As much as we know what they have done for our lives, those of us who have set out on this journey, and as much as we would love to share this understanding with everyone we know at the end of the day do we want people to know the Enneagram or the Spiral or do we want them to know they’re loved? I hope we all use this knowledge to share more love in this world.

Welcome to the Keto Kamp Podcast Episode 60 with Doug Reynolds!     Today, I a have Doug Reynolds, founder of LowCarbUSA®, a platform for scientists, entrepreneurs, and the medical community to share their research surrounding the low carbohydrate and ketogenic lifestyles.   Founded in 2015, LowCarbUSA® is an organization focused on dietary education and support by hosting scientific conferences, providing online coaching, a comprehensive library of scientific papers supporting the way of eating, and a worldwide database of 'Low Carb Friendly' healthcare providers and nutritionists.   In Doug Reynold's early '30s, he had run almost a hundred marathons and ultras and could eat pretty much anything he liked. As Doug approached 40, however, he noticed he was putting on a little weight each year and, no matter how hard he trained, Doug was not able to get the weight off again. In the end, he was always injured and hating running and life itself.   When Doug was first introduced to the concept of the Ketogenic / Banting lifestyle, he could not believe that an athlete could function without carbohydrates. However, as an engineer at heart, Doug started reading all the research, and he found that it made total sense. Plus, it explained all the issues he was having, including the things Doug struggled with back when he was running well.   In this episode, Doug Reynolds opens the show describing his experience gaining weight and then losing it with the keto diet. He was inspired, so he started LowCarbsUSA and describes the lifechanging conferences they hold each year. Plus, Doug explains how he is committed to helping to reverse the current consensus on a diet here in the US and around the world. The consequences of the governmental dietary policies introduced in 1977 have been catastrophic, and it's time we all took a stand! Tune in! Become a member of the Keto Kamp Academy today! Fresh Pressed Olive Oil: http://www.ketokampoliveoil.com Purity Coffee: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com   [00:15] About Doug Reynolds   Doug was a distance runner; he thought he was bulletproof. Doug would run 55-mile races in Africa. As he aged, Doug started to pick up a few pounds of weight every year. At one point, Doug stood on the scale and was horrified to see he was 35 pounds over his ideal weight. Without any resources, Doug tried the keto diet with trial and error. His inflammation cleared up, he lost the weight, and he stopped snoring at night.   [11:15] LowCarbsUSA® Conferences Doug’s first conference far exceeded his expectations. Every conference, they end up building a community and a culture within their organization. They also live stream all of their events – it is available to people online. The live stream is cheaper, and you will not have to travel. However, the vibe and the comradery are lifechanging.   [20:00] Standard of Care Doctors have many challenges suggesting keto to their patients. The standard of care is not a document. You don’t learn it at college. It is a consensus of practitioners in a similar environment with similar training what they actually do in practice. There is now a document guiding physicians on how to utilize a low-carb diet with their patients. Eventually, practitioners who do not acknowledge this diet as a viable way to change a health outcome, they may have to face a malpractice lawsuit.   [35:30] The Conference in Indonesia The audience was in tears when they heard of a boy who had a certain condition and was told he would never walk again. After the boy and his parents started the keto diet, he was able to walk again. Not only did that miracle happen, but his parents also lost weight, and their health improved.   [42:55] Practicing Gratitude Doug is grateful for finding out about the keto diet at the age of 51.   [43:40] Doug’s Definition of Perfect Health Weight is not part of the definition. It comes along for the ride. Doug started keto because of weight. He only learned about the metabolic benefits as he went along. Perfect health is all your biomarkers being where they need to be. That does not include LDL. If you are not eating carbs, then LDL is not an issue. People focus way too much on weight. No one ever dies from being fat; they die from the underlying metabolic issues that made them fat. Society is so focused on weight. If you get yourself metabolically healthy, the weight will come. Be patient. Weight loss is a side-effect of perfect health.     AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Visit Doug’s Website Read his blog Read the Clinical Guidelines Document Connect with Doug Reynolds: Twitter Facebook Pinterest YouTube Instagram Attend the LowCarbUSA conference in Boca Raton, FL. They are preoccupied with shopkeeper’s concerns–how to keep the customers happy, how to lure customers away from competitors down the street, how to package the goods so that the customers will lay out more money. Some of them are very good shopkeepers. They attract a lot of customers, pull in great sums of money, develop splendid reputations. Yet it is still shop-keeping; religious shop-keeping, to be sure, but shop-keeping all the same. The marketing strategies of the fast-food franchise occupy the waking minds of these entrepreneurs; while asleep they dream of the kind of success that will get the attention of journalists. The biblical fact is that there are no successful churches. There are, instead, communities of sinners, gathered before God week after week in towns and villages all over the world. The Holy Spirit gathers them and does his work in them. In these communities of sinners, one of the sinners is called pastor and given a designated responsibility in the community. The pastor’s responsibility is to keep the community attentive to God. It is this responsibility that is being abandoned in spades.” – Eugene Peterson “Working the Angles”Questions:Who are the people who have mentored you? I am constantly on the lookout for good neighborhood restaurants. The kind of restaurants that treat me like a regular even if I'm not; where the host greets me warmly even when it's really crowded; where the food is consistently serious and reasonably priced; and, most of all, where I feel well taken care of at all times.   So when I read Kindness & Salt: Recipes for the Care and Feeding of Your Friends and Neighbors by Doug Crowell and Ryan Angulo, who own Buttermilk Channel and French Louie, two terrific neighborhood restaurants in Brooklyn, I knew they'd be great guests to have on Special Sauce. And I wasn't disappointed.    Both Doug and Ryan fell in love with restaurant work right away. For Ryan it was antidote to high school; he started washing dishes at a country club when he was sixteen. "I hated high school," Ryan says, "I wasn't into sports. I got into the kitchen, and I felt right at home."   On Doug's first day in a kitchen, he was asked to go through a crate of live lobsters and separate the bodies from the claws. "So I never had seen that done anywhere else before, but it's not easy to take a lobster's claws off while they're still alive and it's a pretty messed up thing to do," Doug recalls. "And they were flopping all over the place and snapping at me. That was a trial by fire...But I loved it."   When they decided to open a restaurant in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn together, they had a specific kind of restaurant in mind. As Doug says, they wanted it to be "sort of a hub of the community as well as being one restaurant for all occasions. So a place where you can go with your kids and also come back for a fancy dinner. That's when I know we've really succeeded, is when see those same parents who came in with a high chair and they're back for their anniversary."   And while that may seem like the perfect definition of a neighborhood restaurant, I asked Doug to expand on the idea, and he said, "I think it's a place that if you live near the restaurant, that you can come back to multiple times in a week and have different experiences from the menu and from the service, and from the drinks and everything. You can come in and have dinner by yourself; you can come with your family, you can come with your kids. Because a neighborhood restaurants means that you get a lot of people from the neighborhood regularly, and they can't really do that if it's just a tasting menu restaurant or it's a steakhouse."   There's lots more to dive into in this week's episode of Special Sauce, like the secret (or non-secret) of Ryan and Doug's superb fried chicken, so I hope you tune in.    ---   The full transcript for this episode can be found over here at Serious Eats: https://www.seriouseats.com/2019/02/special-sauce-doug-crowell-ryan-angulo-1-1.html

Questions and comments ericbarrywrites@gmail.com Google Voice # (415) 779-6855 Twitter: @ericbarry Instagram: @ericbarrywrites Corinne and the Cheese (Part 1): It would not be inaccurate to say that I had a love affair with cheese. It also would not be inaccurate to say that I’m a woman who doesn’t like to mince words, so before you start snapping your fingers and thinking, “this girl gets me,” I need to be clear: I like to fuck cheese. -- I remember my first encounter. I was running down a flight of stairs towards our kitchen—I must’ve been two, three years old—and my mom said that magical phrase “Sweetie, lunch is ready!” God my mom had a way with words. I scaled the chair to the kitchen island where meals were always served. She ushered the pan from stove to countertop, my plate awaiting like a landing pad below. And then I saw it. Two perfectly butter-burnt golden pieces of bread, enshrining the Kraft singles as they coalesced inside, melting out in excess like hot curdled sex from its edges. I bit into that sandwich and all that is holy and dairy and carbs made love to my mouth. I wore a bib for protection, and as I chewed, the juices spewed, my mouth perched between bites in a permanent smile. I didn’t know it at the time, but that grilled cheese - or as I called it for several more years - girl cheese, was nothing but a gateway into what many would consider an unhealthy fetish, or at the very least, cardiologists and gynecologists would agree was an unhealthy dietary practice. While most kids on the school yard were trading their lunches for Gushers and hostess cupcakes, I was trading for Handi-Snacks and string cheese. I understand that to some this may sound farfetched. But as you wrestle with my words, wherever you’re reading this: I can assure you of two things: sharing these words with you now has been no easy task, and that if you had that cheese inside you, you’d know this story is anything but fantastical. -- I lost my virginity at 16. It was uneventful, much ado about nothing. You see the movies and you read the magazines and you feel like you’re missing out on something. That you’re doing it wrong. This pattern continued, the banality of lovemaking, fucking, bumping uglies—whatever poetry you wanted to bring to its name, the end result—disappointment—remained the same. There’s a great sense of shame that comes from not being able to achieve an orgasm. You’re told that it’s meant to be this holy grail. The coda to the pas de deux that is lovemaking. It’s not that you can’t enjoy the dance without it, it’s just that the dance never feels conclusive without it. Over time, sex starts to feel more chore-like for both parties. If what can’t be done in 10 minutes can’t be done in 20, and what can’t be done in 20 can’t be done in an hour, what difference does much more than 2 minutes make? At first I’d lie. I’d tell them that I never came on the first date. It wasn’t a sustainable lie. So then I’d tell them I couldn’t cum without assistance. But then, thanks to the internet, sex-positivity became le mot du jour, and suddenly boys were bringing more battery-operated devices into the bedroom than a Best Buy, and so, that lie had to go too. Eventually I said that I could only cum by myself. Without anyone else in the room. I figured that this would remedy the situation, but the reality was, there couldn’t have been a worse lie for me to tell. Suddenly my orgasm became a conquest not of my own but my lovers’. I’d lay there, pussy sopping with an hour’s saliva, only to pat his head, and tell him to enter me. And then I’d continue to lay there, limbs being battered, staring up at the ceiling, waiting for it to be over. Which is not to say that these men shouldn’t be applauded for their concerned efforts, but simply that at a point, sex became less about enjoying them and more about enduring them. -- The first time I lied about an orgasm I was 24. I can’t remember the man’s name on top of me, but I think it was Doug. What a dumb name. It’s just “ugg” with a “D” attached to it. He was hammering and nailing, occasionally tossing his head to cast his sweaty hair to the side. I didn’t find anything particularly attractive about Doug, except that he was yet another step in the direction of staying the course, the ostensible destination some mythical happiness that must be earned through the sheer passing of time. And it had been last call at the Whistling Pickler.  Sitting on his couch, a mere three blocks from the bar, I contemplated if Doug could be the one to solve this ancient mystery that was my body. But two Michelob Lights, and an unveiling of a “a shirt that said something about being a feminist” later, Doug tongue-speared my throat, and down goes Hope. As Doug pumped away, and I lay there, both of us sad in our own way, the thought crossed my mind, ‘what if I gave Doug what he wanted?’ Which was the satisfaction of knowing that he was the one; the one who could satisfy; what if I gave him the victory he was thrusting after? “Oh yeah, fuck me with your big cock. Fuck me with that big, fat cock.” I’d never said such words. Also, it wasn’t that big. “Yeah, oh my god. Ohh fucckk. I squeezed my thighs firmly against his and began contracting them in rapid succession. I put my hands behind my head and grabbed for as much pillow as I could. “It’s happening,” I said, to avoid any ambiguity. I kegeled. And boy could I Kegel. “Mmmm oh yeah yeah yeah, mmmmm” My voice started vibrating, my face scrunched up, and my eyes actually began to well. “Ahhhh.” I sighed out, signaling relief. “Yes. Yes! Oh fuck yeah, I am the fuck king!” His words, not mine. He shot inside me. I didn’t like using condoms, but I made it seem like it was his idea. His face fell into the pillow behind me. My face perked into a smile. It was over. It had never made sense to me before, but at that very moment, I realized why so many women before me had been faking orgasms. And so from that point forward, that became my modus operandi. Until I forgot to check my oil.

This week we got to talk to Markus Gerszi, of Barbell Business fame! [Thunderous applause; confetti falls from the ceiling.] Joking aside, it was very cool to be in Markus’s old box in Orange County, CA, this week. Markus is a smart dude, which is why we keep him around. We’ve been wanting to get his best practices for accountability on the record, so that’s what this episode is all about. [Thunderous applause; even more confetti falls from the ceiling.] In this business, we tend to be very client-focused. We want the best for our clients, or we’d be doing something else for a living. We have a natural impulse to hold them accountable, with everything from documenting their workouts to journaling their meals to setting long-term goals (and occasionally standing in for their therapists). Join us as we talk about some common-sense, often-overlooked methods for reliable client accountability. And while we’re on the subject of accountability, let’s talk about you. It’s almost second-nature to keep our clients accountable. But who or what do you have in place to keep yourself consistently in-check? This includes your personal fitness goals as well as the daily operations of your business. Long-term goals, too. If you’re like most gym owners, your answer to this question is, “Mumble mumble clients busy mumble.” And unfortunately, “Mumble mumble clients busy mumble” isn’t a sustainable strategy. As Doug points out, “Holding yourself accountable is a totally different ballgame.” Most of us know we should do it, but don’t have a great idea about how. In this episode, we talk to Markus about the best strategies to hold your clients accountable, your team accountable, and yourself accountable. “A brand is a set of promises. If you break that, you hurt the brand.” With a storied career in advertising including his current gig as co-founder and creative director of the Velocity Partners agency, Doug Kessler has spent his career helping brands create and communicate promises to their communities. This week, Doug stopped by the On Brand podcast for a chat about content, creative, and strategy. About Doug Kessler Doug Kessler is co-founder and creative director of Velocity Partners, the London-based B2B content marketing agency — and Content Marketing Institute Agency of the Year. Doug has written a lot about content marketing including the B2B Content Strategy Checklist, Insane Honesty in Content Marketing and Crap: Why the Biggest Threat to Content Marketing is Content Marketing. Episode Highlights We started the show with … crap. Doug has spent a lot of time writing about crap. Or specifically, what we need to avoid creating as content marketers. As he notes, “the biggest threat to content marketing is content marketing. Content makes too much sense to go anywhere.” Content quantity vs. quality. So what about the million-dollar question, ‘how much content should you create?’ Doug’s answer: “Do as much as you can above a certain quality level. Every piece you put out can either help or hurt your brand.” What you really have to do is … Create a content brand. You have to be more than just a brand builder and a content creator. You have to develop a content brand. But it’s harder and harder to hit a home run. How can you produce a content marketing home run? As Doug notes, “the first step is to aim for it.” This sounds obvious but so many of us fall prey to internal and external constraints that keep our content in the middle of the bell curve. That said, you still need to be strategic instead of following creative whims. “At Ogilvy in the ‘80s, we used to say, ‘you can always get attention from a gorilla in a jock strap.’” B2B content isn’t necessarily harder. “It’s different. Not all pieces have to do everything. There are heart pieces and there are head pieces. We need more content that celebrates the Simon Sinek ‘why.’” What brand has made Doug smile recently? “A B2C example is Everlane for their radical transparency in their supply chain and their margins. Thank you! For B2B, I’d say GE.” Doug then reminded us of their Hammer ad (below). To learn more about Doug, check out the Velocity Partners website and follow Doug on Twitter. Wall Street Unplugged - Your Best Source for Finance, Investing & Economics

Welcome back to another episode of Wall Street Unplugged! Our guest is founder and chairman of Casey Research, Doug Casey. On this episode, Doug starts off by explaining why he believes an "inevitable" economic meltdown is around the corner. As Doug puts it, economic bubbles are forming in every financial market around us... except one. Lets face it, speculative investing is not for everyone. In the interview, however, Doug tells listeners how to follow his footsteps. Doug is the most successful speculative investor I know, so when he talks I listen. Tune in as Doug gives his bold forward looking predictions. You might not agree with everything… but like any risky investment, these are ideas that can give you extraordinary returns. Also, Doug gives us a sneak-peek of his new book Speculator. The story shares everything Doug has ever learned in the mining industry. This is a “must read” for every resource stock investor. Don’t miss out on this week’s Educational Segment [52:56]. After a slight fallout in the gold markets, analyst are thinking its time to sell. I’ll be telling you why this is good news. By the end of this segment you’ll know five of my favorite stocks for this upcoming quarter.

Doug Kostreva doesn't get much sleep.  A typical day starts at 4AM and doesn't end until after 9pm.  Doug doesn't mind though. As a multi-generational farmer, Doug never stops thinking about how to make stuff grow better.  If Doug isn't filling an order for a hunter eager to get their food plot off the ground, he's giving someone advice on how to make the best food plot of their life. As Doug says, you want to plant far enough ahead to give your plants maximum growth at the very moment you step into your treestand. This means planting in August to give the deer a buffet of greens to devour in October and November.   Doug takes this stuff seriously and spends hours crafting the next best seed blend combination for various environments.  We pick Doug's brain about everything from choosing a plot site, to weed killer, to fertilizer, to tonnage, to soil testing, nitrogen and much more. Doug Chapman was the 13th CrossFit affiliate. At his peak, he had 400 members at HyperFit in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Though that number has declined in recent years, he's best known for his online programming for athletes such as Julie Foucher. Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, Lindsey Valenzuela, Jennifer Smith, Nick Urankar, Neil Maddox, Chyna Cho, Jacob Heppner—they're all coached remotely by Doug. But his gym doesn't focus on competition. "If you focus on competitive CrossFit, you're going to ruin your business," he said. At the 1:09 mark, Nancy arrives. She's a retired lawyer and law professor, and she has a lot to say about training seniors with CrossFit. Doug steps aside for a few minutes and lets me talk to Nancy instead. As Doug moves more toward personal training and small group training (instead of teaching classes,) he talks about what makes a great trainer vs. a great coach and why many coaches should do more PT to improve their class coaching.

Douglas E. Noll, J.D., M.A. is an award-winning author, teacher, peacemaker, and mediator, specializing in difficult, complex, and intractable conflicts. He has been honored as Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America and California Attorney of the Year by California Lawyer Magazine. For the past 4 years, Doug has been working pro bono in maximum security prisons, teaching murderers to be peacemakers. With his colleague, Laurel Kaufer, he has trained more than 200 men and women inmates to be peacemakers and mediators within their prison communities. The results have been astounding. Violence has been reduced, lives have been transformed, and inmates have regained their humanity. So many inmates have told Doug “If I had just learned these skills and this knowledge 20 years ago, I would not be in prison today,” that Doug decided to reach out to the free world. He has written a simple e-Book, called “How to Live a Centered Life,” and has created Negotiate a Centered Life, an on-line life skills and re-lationship course. In addition, he reaches out to middle schools and high schools to teach young people the essential life skills that will guarantee centered lives and strong relationships. As Doug says, “If I can teach murderers to be peacemakers, imagine what I can do for everyone else.” Doug hosts his own radio show and has appeared as a guest on hundreds of local and national radio and television shows. http://negotiateacenteredlife.com/
