It's Valentine's Day and time for some love and rejection. Let's hope more love than rejection. But, if have no agenda, and you learn to master rejection, then you can be happy and in love with yourself. Helping us give ourselves a little love this Valentine's Day is pop artist, Jaime Andrian, sharing his story of major pop star rejection and how he's learned to rebound to love himself. Plus he shares all about his new new single - If You Could Read My Mind! About Jamie Jaime Adrian's explosive new album, No Agenda, dips into multiple genres of dance music from Latin beat to country twists, house tracks and euro pop.  “I didn't want people to say it all sounds the same,” the artist reflects, with a grin.   Releasing with the album is Jaime Adrian's cover of “If You Could Read My Mind”. “That song was an anthem for me and my friends growing up,” he explains of the house music version, released in 1998 for the film 54.  “I jumped at the opportunity to record and put my own spin on it.  I hope I do it justice.”  Other tracks on No Agenda include “Jaded”, an original song about Jaime's obsession with Jade Thirlwall from the girl group Little Mix, and “Belong,” a nod to Jaime's self-described nerdy quirks.  “The songs I wrote are all based on my experiences or things I've seen people I love go through,” he explains. “Every song has a different attachment to me.”  Produced by Velvet Code, Jaime Adrian's No Agenda is being distributed by So Fierce Music/The Orchard/Sony Music Entertainment and is available on Apple Music, Spotify, and all digital platforms. Jaime Adrian was born on the east side of Chicago.  His father passed away when he was 17.  His mother raised him and his little brother and sister on her own.   It was a Mexican and very Catholic neighborhood and kids often made fun of Jaime for being different.  They called his love of singing “not something a real man would do” and for years, they managed to silence his voice. Until The X Factor came calling.  Jaime Adrian flew to Kansas City and after performing for the preliminary judges, he learned he had made it to the live show auditions!  The show did not go as planned, however.  L.A. Reid called Jaime's performance horrible karaoke.  Demi Lovato told Jaime that he was a good singer but that it was the wrong song choice.  He spent the rest of the day crying in his hotel room from embarrassment, determined to stop singing. In 2020, Jaime moved back to Chicago where he met music producer Velvet Code.   “Velvet encouraged me to find my voice again,” Jaime explains.  “We started with one song, then another, and another.” Their latest single, “Lollipop,” released this summer, won much acclaim for the young singer.   With its dark Latin/reggaeton pop beat, the track clapped back at the negative people who have tried to quash Jaime's spirit.   It appears on No Agenda. “If you would have told me before 2020 that I'd have a completed album in 2024, I wouldn't have believed it. I worked my butt off all last year to complete No Agenda, saving and paying for it all out of...

Heart Banter by David Gittlin

Here's another Gordon Lightfoot tune that may not be as recognizable as many of the other songs of his that I've covered here. Somehow, "I'll be Alright" crept into my consciousness and I'm happy to offer my cover of the song in this post. To me, the song is as lovely and memorable as many of Lightfoot's hits including: "If You Could Read My Mind," "Early Morning Rain," and "Song For A Winter's Night." Please enjoy the memory of this song and the one and only Gordon Lightfoot. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/david-gittlin/message

Last week, we lost the great singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. In honor of his passing, Alec is sharing his 2016 conversation with the musician, one of his favorites in the history of the podcast: Over the course of a career that has lasted more than half a century, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot achieved global stardom and exceptional influence. Bob Dylan's a fan—he's said, “I can't think of any [Lightfoot songs] I don't like.” These songs—“Beautiful,” “Sundown,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” and many others—have been treasured by generations of popular musicians and listeners around the world. But Gordon Lightfoot was just one of many aspirants who moved to Toronto in the early 1960s to try their hand in the burgeoning folk music scene there. Lightfoot tells Alec about fitting a feeling to a melody, why he owes his first hit record to an exec's girlfriend, and how he wrote "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by pulling lines straight from the newspaper.  You can listen to all of the music from this episode and other selections from Gordon Lightfoot in a curated playlist here.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gordon Lightfoot has died, at the age of 84. He spoke with the Academy of Achievement last year, and we featured that interview in an episode. To honor the legendary singer and songwriter, we are re-posting the episode today. Gordon Lightfoot had a slew of international hits in the 1960's and 70's, including "If You Could Read My Mind," "Sundown" and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." His songs were also performed by some of the biggest stars of that time, including Jerry Lee Lewis, The Grateful Dead, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, and Barbra Streisand.  Lightfoot was still writing and performing into his 80's. In this interview you will find him as charming a raconteur as you might expect, given the nature of the songs he writes. He talks about his childhood in a small town in Ontario, and about his path to the top of the music industry. He describes the quirks of his songwriting process, and explains why he changed the words of "Edmund Fitzgerald" after he recorded it. (c ) American Academy of Achievement 2022-2023

In this special tribute edition, we remember the life and career of Gordon Lightfoot.  In this episode, we have interview clips from over the years.  It's a rich treasure trove of highlights in which you'll get to know Lightfoot very well.  His thoughtfulness, his love of songwriting, his regrets, his ambition and his sense of humour.   We'll feature a 2006 interview with musician Robbie Lane, in which Gord recalls his early years playing small clubs in Toronto - and how other artists would mine his catalogue for themselves. How early covers of his songs put him in the rarefied company of the likes of Bob Dylan. The stories behind massive hits like "Sundown". "If You Could Read My Mind" and "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald". We feature Tom's 2019 chat with Gordon, in which Gordon reacts to some of the old audio we have of him talking about his earliest club gigs.  Christopher also talks about his first encounter with Gordon backstage in Peterborough. We chat with Lightfoot biographer Nicholas Jennings about Gordon's great gift as a songwriter and dedication to the craft. We also reveal some of the singers regrets. Plus, we talk about the time that Gordon almost sued the writer of Whitney Houston's hit "The Greatest Love Of All".

You might remember a few episodes back when I teamed up with Mike Messner. He's the host of the Gordon Lightfoot appreciation podcast Carefree Highway Revisited. Well, Mike is back, and this time around we're talking about Lightfoot's first big American hit, "If You Could Read My Mind." I actually went looking around for the album that I'd first heard this song on, and it turned out that I was exactly correct about its title: This was a four-album box set that came out in 1973, so clearly the folks at Warner Brothers didn't have a lot of hope for the rest of the decade, musically. However, this is a pretty amazing collection. I don't think K-Tel ever put anything like this together. And it's a shame that A) it's never appeared in cassette or CD format; and B) it's not likely to be, considering the nightmare it's got to be to get the rights to them by now. (You can get it on 8-track tape if you're so motivated, according to Discogs.) At any rate, I've actually wanted to cover this song for a long while, but didn't really have enough material for an entire episode, so I was glad to have Mike along for  the ride this time around. It's Alec's turn to pick one of his most beloved episodes in the summer archive series. This week, we feature one of his favorite musicians, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, from their 2013 conversation. Over the course of a career that has lasted more than half a century, Lightfoot has achieved global stardom and exceptional influence. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, legendary singer/songwriter / DJ / producer Ultra Naté confirmed rumours of a new studio album titled ULTRA by dropping the long player's lead single MIRACLE, co-produced with Gianni Romano Emanuelle Esposito and John “J-C” Carr.A sultry and empowering smash packed with Afro-pop flavour, MIRACLE should bring a healthy dose of heat to everyone's change of seasons. Chugging woodwind and undulating brass sections hustle up against slinky guitar licks. An incessant and percussive African-laced rhythm combines with Ultra's soul-drenched vocal and message, gliding into an ear worm of a groove."I wrote “MIRACLE” for women, especially Black women like myself, as an affirmation and validation of our strength and power,” explains Ultra. “We are constantly seeing events and images of social and racial injustices, it's not only heart-breaking in that moment but also leaves a lasting stain. During lockdown was no different, even with a full-scale pandemic happening, so much negative messaging was highlighted. I wanted to speak to my sisters, and possibly inspire women and young girls from all walks of life. I wanted “MIRACLE” to speak to our divine being within, hoping that we fully understand and appreciate our greatness.”Weaving effortlessly in and out like a hypnotic needle and thread, the incessant motherland club groove and Ultra's comforting lyricism draws the listener into a flawless composition that demands the listener to rise and dance.2022 is a hugely significant year for Ultra Naté. The 25th anniversary of the release of her iconic single Free, it also marks an incredible three-decade milestone in the music industry. To celebrate the occasion, two of Ultra's earliest albums – Blue Notes In the Basement and One Woman's Insanity – will be fully remastered and for the very first time released across digital streaming platforms. Additionally, the original music videos for Ultra's singles It's Over Now, Is It Love? and How Long have been digitised and placed on Warner Music Group's Rhino site for the first time officially, drawing a clear line between her beginnings and her continuing path at the heart of dance music 30 years later.Labelled one of Billboard's ‘Greatest of All Time' and the voice behind countless international hits including the #1 hit Free, It's Over Now, Rejoicing, If You Could Read My Mind, ‘Automatic', New Kind Of Medicine and Found A Cure, the iconic Ultra Naté is beloved by music fans the world over.

It's a fucking killer second album!" It's our 200th episode!  And to celebrate, we are going to cover a group we reference frequently in other episodes - “all roads lead to Yes.”  The third studio album by Yes was simply entitled The Yes Album, and it was both a critical success, and a much-needed commercial breakthrough, hitting number 40 on the US album charts.  It was the first album not to contain any cover songs, and was also the first album to feature guitarist Steve Howe in the group.  This iteration of Yes consisted of Jon Anderson on vocals, Chris Squire on bass and vocals, Steve Howe on guitars and vocals, Tony Kaye on keyboards, and Bill Bruford on percussion.  This album would be the last with Kaye on keyboards until the 90125 album in the 80's.  We're also spending some time talking about the podcast, our experiences over 200 episodes, fans from different places, and more What The Riff trivia.  We hope you enjoy this milestone podcast! Yours Is No DisgraceThe opening track was written by all five members of the band.  It is a song about the Vietnam War, telling the returning soldier that the war wasn't his fault, and that he had no choice but to fight.Starship TrooperRobert Heinlein's novel of the same name inspired the name of this song. The epic consists of three movements, "Life Seeker," primarily written by Jon Anderson, "Disillusion" mostly written by Squire, and "Würm," largely written by Howe. I've Seen All Good PeopleThis is another lengthy epic of a song, not uncommon for Yes with it's prog rock sensibilities.  Jon Anderson and Chris Squire wrote this song and it's two movements.  The first movement, "Your Move," uses chess as a metaphor for relationships, and was released as a single which became a top 40 hit.  The second movement, "All Good People," would be re-incorporated into the song when played on FM rock stations at the time.  It references John Lennon in several places. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the motion picture “Love Story” This romantic tragedy starred Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neil.  It was released in December 1970 and was a big grossing film in February. STAFF PICKS:Temptation Eyes by The Grass RootsWayne's staff pick is a California group which charted frequently in the early 70's, including this song which went to number 15.  The band originally was founded by Lou Adler and the songwriting duo of P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri. If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot Brian's staff pick is the well-known Canadian singer-songwriter.  This song was inspired by Lightfoot's divorce.  It has been recorded over 100 times since Lightfoot wrote it by artists like Liza Minnelli, Barbara Streisand, Glen Campbell, and Johnny Mathis.Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? by ChicagoBruce brings us the first song the band recorded together on their first album in 1969.  It wasn't released as a single until late 1970 after "Make Me Smile" became a hit.  This encouraged the group to go back to this song and cut it down to single length.  Robert Lamm wrote and sang lead on this song, inspired by a quip he received from a Brooklyn movie theater usher. What Is Life by George HarrisonRob's finishes the staff picks with the “quiet” Beatle.  It is off his triple album "All Things Must Pass," and this second single from the album went into the top 10 on the U.S. charts.  Eric Clapton played on this album, and it was produced by Phil Spector.   It is a love song that appears to be directed both at a woman and a deity. INSTRUMENTALTRACK:The Clap by YesThis live instrumental piece was brought to the group by Steve Howe, and appears on The Yes Album.   It was written in celebration of the birth of Howe's son, Dylan.

Love expresses itself in many different ways. You hear a song. Suddenly a wave of emotion comes over you, remembering days, months (years if you're lucky) of love, desire and intimacy with someone in the past. This is one of those songs by Gordon Lightfoot. If You Could Read My Mind released in 1970. See the videos on YouTube. Source: Lyrics.com. If you could read my mind love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old time movie About a ghost from a wishing well In a castle dark or a fortress strong With chains upon my feet You know that ghost is me And I will never be set free As long as I'm a ghost you can see If I could read your mind love What a tale your thoughts could tell Just like a paperback novel The kind the drugstore sells When you reach the part where the heartaches come Come the hero would be me Heroes often fail And you won't read that book again Because the ending's just to hard to take. When did Gordon Lightfoot write if you could read my mind? Answer: In 1969 "It catches the cadences of a hurt lover not used to words that cut too close" (Maclean's, 1 May 1978). The song has been recorded more than 100 times, first by the composer for his LP Sit Down Young Stranger.

Book:  The Dead Zone By Stephen King Film: The Dead Zone (1983)   Released in 1979, this was Stephen King's first smash hit which was also the first of his books to kit the top ten best sellers.  This was also the first novel to feature the fictional town in Maine called Castle Rock.  This science fiction thriller would spawn a critically acclaim film directed by David Cronenberg and a six season television series which aired on the USA Network.    The Dead Zone (1983)   The film was directed by David Cronenberg with screenplay written by Jeffrey Boam.   The film started shooting in January 1983 in the the Niagra Falls region.  The cold and brutal winds were sometimes unbearable for cast and crew.  Interestingly enough, Bill Murray was first choice but producers felt that he was not dramatic enough and Christopher Walken was cast instead.  The film is considered one of the best Stephen King adaptions.   We are joined by Barbara Venkataraman, author of the Jaimie Quinn Mystery series. As Doug and I wrap up this section we get more into our personal stories and how those 'unworkable' moments forced us to question our long standing patterns of  behavior, reactions, defenses, and beliefs. No growth comes without challenge, and these are the times when descending into lower levels of health can occur without observing and questioning. It's our awareness that gives us the choice to withdraw the boundaries or expand them opening us to know a deeper love and freedom. The journey of growth that is one that we must take on our own but not alone. Growth in any relationship requires communication, and if we want to grow together we must communicate. As Gordon Lightfoot bemoaned in his song from 1970 entitled, "If You Could Read My Mind", 'what a tale my thoughts could tell'. Well guess what? No one is a mind reader. We must open the lines of communication. The Enneagram and Spiral Dynamics are both beautiful maps of self discovery. As much as we know what they have done for our lives, those of us who have set out on this journey, and as much as we would love to share this understanding with everyone we know at the end of the day do we want people to know the Enneagram or the Spiral or do we want them to know they’re loved? I hope we all use this knowledge to share more love in this world.

Eurodance is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in the late 1980s in Europe. It combines many elements of hip hop, techno, Hi-NRG, house music and Euro disco. This genre of music is heavily influenced by the use of rich melodic vocals, either exclusively by itself or inclusively with rapped verses. -Wikipedia The description of Eurodance by Wikipedia is pretty much on point. As Party Favorz has said before, most genres rely heavily on previous styles, which in turn relied heavily on previous dance music trends. These days people would say that it's cultural appropriation as all dance music has it's roots in the blues as much as rock and roll does. In fact, you can draw a parallel line from one genre to the next and hear the influences in various artists own creations. Eurodance is not overly broad though there are some tracks that come in at a slower beat, the majority tended to by 130 BPM and higher. This style of dance music was at its commercial peak during the 90's but switched gears to what would now be referred to as Hard Style, where the BPM was pushed as high as 145 BPM in the early millennium. While not a novel ideal, popular tracks like "Heaven" by DJ Sammy, "What It Hurts the Most" by Cascada and "Listen To Your Heart" by DHT were all massive pop ballads before getting the neck-pain inducing overhaul provided by contemporary eurostyle makeovers. This re-translation of pop ballads has been going on since the 70's when Donna Summer reworked Barry Manilow's  "Could It Be Magic" and Richard Harris' "MacArthur Park" and Viola Wills' disco reinterpretation of Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind."  Even the Almighty music production house created a worthy Hi-NRG remake of Diana Ross' "Touch Me In the Morning." Of their remixes, I've included their re-work of the Bonnie Tyler classic "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Nicki French which was a massive floor-filler at the time. The Ultimate Eurodance Collection contains every single major release (in the United States), which most of us remember from being hammered at radio, MTV and our favorite clubs. I took some licence and mixed in a few House Music, Trance, Hi-NRG and Techno tracks to balance out these sets. However, make no mistake — all your Eurodance fantasies are contained within these four volumes. Even though I took a different approach when putting these together than my previous efforts — I have to admit that they came out quite stellar. There's a lot of sugar, cheese and syrup contained here but at least I can look back and say "yeah, that was a thing and I danced my ass off to these songs so fuck you!" I'm finishing up volume 4 today and plan on staggering these out the rest of the week. Until the next time...ENJOY! I want to thank one of our longtime followers Marshall for guilt-tripping the puritan in me into swapping out the The KLF feat. Tammy Wynette "Justified & Ancient (Stand by the JAMs)  with the correct version. The version I used was the original version from 1987 with vocalist Maxine Harvey. I must have listened to this set 5 times before giving it my seal of approval and don't know how I missed that. Nevertheless, it's now been corrected.  Album : The Ultimate Eurodance Collection vol. 1 Genre : Euro-dance, Hi-NRG, Techno Year : 2020 Total Time : 02:20:01 1. Happy Monday or maybe not. If it's bitterly cold, snowing or iced-over where you're at never fear as Party Favorz is here to put a little sunshine in your day with Hi-NRG Gay Anthems volume 3! This set pulls from both decades with a few caveats. The late Viola Wills who got started in the clubs in the early 80's with hits like "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" and "If You Could Read My Mind" (a remake of the Gordon Lightfoot #1 early 70's classic) is featured here with her rendition of  the 1930's torch classic "Stormy Weather" turning it into a hi-energy floor stomper that pulled all the gay boys to the floor. As for "If You Could Read My Mind," the dance version initially brought to life for the dance floor by Viola was re-worked by Amber, Jocelyn Enriquez, and Ultra Naté aka Stars On 54 and produced by Hex Hector for the movie Studio 54. I used the version by the fabulous Soraya Vivian who under the Fierce Angel imprint has created some fantastic classic remakes with her soaring vocals. Nicki French took over for Bonnie Tyler with her rendition of "Total Eclipse of the Heart," which was a massive dance hit in the early 90's and given the Almighty treatment. Equally, Martha Wash re-sung "It's Raining Me" sans the late Izora Rhodes. Frankly, there are a plethora of 80's classics in this set that should be instantly recognizable even to the average listener. However, one song that I have to mention is the feminist anthem "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene, which was oddly written by two men (go figure). Charlene was the only white artist signed to Motown Records, and the song was initially released in 1977 and 1978 barely cracking the Top 100. It was re-released again in 1982 where it topped at #3 on the charts for several weeks and was the only hit Charlene had recorded but had a lasting impact. The cheesy song gained popularity again when it was included in the 1994 movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" and has been a drag queen favorite ever since. Charlene re-sung the vocals but used the altered lyrical section of the song (I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring that cost too much to be free) for the dance version. The truth is, I could go on and on about the origins of various songs and the singers behind them, but my guess is you want to get to the music. In the end, it's all about the memories and lots of fun! I'll be back on Wednesday to close out this series with volume 4. Until then...ENJOY! Before I forget, I want to give a HUGE shoutout to Anthony S. and Paul S. for their generous donations. The only thing I ask is not to let the well run dry before I decide to renew my host in April for another year. If I do, that's when I'm going to need the money. Nevertheless, this is going to help me dig up some rare treasures for the (as of now) planned significant Madonna celebration multi-series collection I have on tap for August. If I make it that far, this will be the most comprehensive and worthwhile series I've ever put out for any artist that will be cherished for decades to come. Full stop! David Hayward was baptized Anglican as a baby, came to faith in a Baptist church when he was a teenager, changed to Pentecostal in his late teens, married another Pentecostal named Lisa, was ordained Presbyterian, pastored a Vineyard church, and planted others. He has a Masters in Theological Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, as well as a Masters in Religious Studies and Ministry from McGill University in Montreal. But in 2010 David left the professional paid clergy. He is still passionate about how people can find and follow their own spiritual path with courage and joy, as well as in how people can freely gather and form community in healthy ways. David started a blog called nakedpastor in 2006, and initiated his public analysis of religion, religious community and spirituality through his writings, art and cartoons. Thousands of people are challenged and entertained by nakedpastor every day. His art, cartoons, writings and book have found their way all around the world. David lives with his wife Lisa on the beautiful Kennebecasis River near Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. They have 3 grown children close by. I just want to relax. on wishing anything were different. I am most healthy when I release and accept...that which I have no control over. We don't really realize how destructive expectations are, do we? Imagine someone your sideways with comes to you, humbles themselves and tries to repair the breach and because you were expecting it, the beauty and miracle of it is lost on you. It may not have measured up to your expectation and thus lost on you. The degree in which I wish things in my life, over which I have no control, were different has a direct and immediate effect on my satisfaction with my life. Release and accept. Say yes to what is. Because, unlike my Christian life, where I was compelled to carpe diem, to keep pressing in. One scripture that I memorized and quoted almost everyday in my quiet times was Philipians 3:7-13. And it demonstrates a disdain for satisfaction. Even now, that machosim, that rigor appeals to something in me, but I now consider it to be something life-draining, and that is...never let a guy relax, be content for a goddamn minute. It's saying no to what is and constantly trying to get better, be better, be more pleasing, be more spiritual, and just reciting that again sounds exhausting and reminds me of the debilitating effect that had on my fatigue and frustration. Today I want to be satisfied, I want to relax. I want to say yes to what is. To quote Nietzsche (and I'm paraphrasing), "“I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful that which is out of my control; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati--the love of fate: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. The only thing I will say no to is looking away. I will not look away. I will not bury my head in the sand and deny that shit is happening. I will look at my life with eyes wide open. And all in all and on the whole: some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer. It's my formula for human greatness: amor fati: that I want nothing to be different, not in the future, not in the past. Not only that I would endure what is necessary, much less to hide it from myself, such idealism is wishful thinking and a lie, in the face of reality— , but instead to love it...to embrace it as mine to learn from, within which to find truth. Amor fati: this is the very core of my being—And as to my hardships, failures and mistakes, do I not owe much more to these than I owe to my successes? To these I owe a higher kind of health, a sort of health which grows stronger under everything that does not actually kill me!—To these, I owe even my philosophy, which is great suffering is the only and ultimate emancipator of spirit, for it teaches one that living fearfully and suspiciously is constantly making mountains out of molehills. Only great suffering; that great suffering, under which we seem to be over a fire of greenwood, the suffering that takes its time—forces us philosophers to descend into our nethermost depths, and to let go of all that which we formerly staked our humanity which was a trust that everything happened for a reason, that life was good and fair. No, acknowledging that chaos runs the universe, not order; that absurdity is the norm, not meaning or purpose. Suffering. Beauty in it all. Not hating it; loving it. By saying saying yes to it. Release and accept." In this talk with David Hayward, we discover that he and I were both muscians in the Lort's service. Writing Christian songs. Well, just to show how truly shameless I am, I'm going to play a song I wrote and recorded in 1983 as a 17 year old, and it's the opposite of the philosophy I just prescribed from Nietzsche, and directly taken from Paul. It's about never being satisfied. Contrast that with today when all I want in these last two or three decades of my life is satisfaction. Relax, release and accept.   We taped this conversation on August 19th, 2018. The intro music is by Dave Weckl called "Just Groove Me"The segue music on this episode is "If You Could Read My Mind" by Gordon Lightfoot.  Thanks for listening, and be a yes-sayer to what is.

Prepare yourselves. What you’re about to hear is an actual Craigslist posting from Thursday, January 5th. Coachella announced its 2017 schedule and lineup on Tuesday, January 3rd. Gordon got 2 VIP passes for Weekend 2. Then he dropped this: (archived link). Yikes. American Horror Story: Gordie. Have a listen.  It’s good clean fun. (Actually, you might feel a bit dirty…but rest assured, nobody responded to Gordon’s enticing offer.  I think.  Actually, I have no idea.  There might be some twenty-something tied up on a used mattress in the back of Gordo’s camper with Tom Petty’s “American Girl” blasting,  several gallons of Palmer’s lotion in the passenger seat, and a high pressure hose nozzle just in case.) We present to you, “Gordie.” The music?  Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, “American Girl,” (duh) and Johnny Cash’s cover of, “If You Could Read My Mind.” -G   Gordie’s Sweet Camper

Over the course of a career that has lasted more than half a century, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot has achieved global stardom and exceptional influence. Bob Dylan’s a fan—he's said, “I can’t think of any [Lightfoot songs] I don’t like.” These songs—“Beautiful,” “Sundown,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” and many others—have been treasured by generations of popular musicians and listeners around the world. But Gordon Lightfoot was just one of many aspirants who moved to Toronto in the early 1960s to try their hand in the burgeoning folk music scene there. Lightfoot tells host Alec Baldwin about fitting a feeling to a melody, why he owes his first hit record to an exec's girlfriend, and how he wrote "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by pulling lines straight from the newspaper.

Trust me, picking favorites here feels almost sacrilegious when the list is stacked with wall-to-wall classics. From Jennifer Lopez's "Waiting for Tonight" — which Hex won a Grammy for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical for his transformative take on the track — to Whitney Houston's soulful collaboration "Heartbreak Hotel" featuring Faith Evans & Kelly Price, it's evident Hex Hector's talents know no bounds. Let's not forget other gems in this fifth volume. Deborah Cox's "Absolutely Not" and Donna Summer's "I Will Go With You (Con Te Partiró)" capture the very essence of Hex Hector's knack for crafting infectious, foot-stomping beats. Anastacia's "I'm Outta Love" and Aubrey's "Stand Still" are more examples of Hector's deft touch, taking already great tracks and turning them into club anthems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpIxQoL-cMU Stars on 54 (Ultra Naté, Amber, and Jocelyn Enriquez) also make an appearance with "If You Could Read My Mind," a tune many will remember from the movie and soundtrack "54" or the Viola Willis Disco version from 1980 or maybe even the original singer songwriter Gordon Lightfoot version that hit #5 on the pop charts in 1971. It just shows that no matter the genre, a good song is a good song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHtlXz2D38Y So as we gear up for the sixth installment tomorrow, let's savor Volume 5 and all the rich, energetic, and soulful mixes it has to offer. Happy Friday! I finally got this finished late last night (I mean, I couldn't have a Fireworks mix and release it after Independence day, after all). I had finished a lot of it before I was gone to NYC, but it still had a lot of work to do. I haven't had a lot of time to listen to it for problems, so please excuse any you hear. If you listen, there are actually fireworks on this mix at 1:42:12, thanks to Kelis - 4th Of July (Richard X Remix). There is also a shout to MJ in here with a couple of songs. The first time I listened to D.O.N.S. - Earth Song (Club Mix), I immediately got goose bumps. I think it's a gorgeous electro version of that already beautiful song and the lyrics couldn't mean more today (hello BP). Yes, If You Could Read My Mind makes another appearance. Do you think I like that song? Ha. I just thought this was different, fun electro take on the song. I hope you enjoy some of the other new takes on some fun older songs I also threw on here. I wish everyone a very happy and safe Independence day! Song listing: Gospel Strategy feat. Sarah J. Ultra Naté | The Diva Series

In this final chapter of the Diva Series, we are honoring a true pioneer in house music.  In the early 90s, Ultra Naté (or as I like to say Ultra Naugh-tay) started out at a major label (WB) where she had nominal success on the dance charts and little if any on the pop charts.  Her two albums Blue Notes in the Basement and One Woman's Insanity were critically acclaimed but did little to match her contemporaries at the time like Crystal Waters and Robin S, who were having mainstream success.  It wasn't until she left Warner Brothers and moved to the powerhouse dance label Strictly Rhythm that she found her footing. With the release of the first single Free, her third album Situation Critical blew up.  In fact, Free received a gold certification in the UK and became a massive worldwide hit while securing its place in the gay community as one of the biggest anthems of all-time.  By the time the second single came out (Found a Cure), she had secured not only the affections of us queer folk but was elevated to diva status that had everyone waiting for her next move. In late 1998, she teamed with superstar DJ Hex Hector and promising new artists Amber and Jocelyn Enriquez to sing on the Gordon Lightfoot classic If You Could Read My Mind (a remake of the disco version popularized by Viola Wills in the early 80's) for the movie 54.  Talk about sealing the deal!  I remember going to see the movie and falling in love with Ryan Phillippe.  I went out and bought the soundtrack as well as the maxi-single, which I played ad nausea. This was followed in 2000 with the release of Stranger Than Fiction and it's two mammoth singles Desire and Get It Up (The Feeling).  At this point, the dance industry was rapidly changing from the classic house sounds of the 90s to the bigger productions by superstar producers such as Thunderpuss, Hex Hector, Peter Rauhofer and Victor Calderone.  Not willing to be left behind, Ultra Naté quickly found her way in this new era. After taking some time off and working on some side projects like the single Freak On with Stonebridge, she finally came out with a new album (Grime, Silk & Thunder), a new look coupled with a new-found attitude and energy.  That album delivered two number one hits (Automatic, Give It All You Got) and two top-three hits (Love's the Only Drug, Twisted).  However, it was the video for Automatic that had all the boys sweating.  Capturing the burgeoning digital era and instant gratification, the video was a staple in clubs across the globe. We are already well into 2010 and Ultra Naté hasn't slowed down.  Strictly Rhythm has released newly minted remixes for Free and she has collaborated with Nicola Fasano on the single No Wasted Hearts and a soon to be released single Give It 2 U  from the forthcoming album Sacrifice by the ultra-sexy and master of his domain Quentin Harris.  Ultra is not sitting on her laurels nor dwelling on the past.  While we don't get new albums as often as we'd like, her continued evolution as an artist and involvement in the dance community is much appreciated and lauded for her enormous contributions. Even if she never releases another song or album, she would be forever remembered for her voice, her tenacity and the tremendous body of work that has kept our bodies moving and shaking over the years.  It is for this reason and with great pleasure that Party Favorz is honoring Miss Ultra Naté by inducting her into the Diva Hall of Fame.  Be sure to check out the fabulous video Automatic after the jump.
