Show #797 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 2nd June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. PORSCHE CHAIRMAN IS 'OPTIMISTIC' ABOUT POST-COVID-19 TAYCAN SALES "Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG Oliver Blume, who remains confident that Porsche will not only weather the current economic storms, but can come out stronger." Reports Roadshow by CNET: "Blume said that Porsche sales in the first quarter were down approximately five percent, admitting the overall impact on the first half of the year will be "maybe more heavy." However, he said, there are signs of light. "[We're] looking optimistic[ally] towards the future, and the response we are getting from the market. The order intakes are coming up, so it's too early to predict if we will have at the end of the year a 10% effect." However, the Taycan remains sold out for all of 2020 and, with its release in China, Blume is again optimistic. "I think it was a perfect start for Porsche to the electric era." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/porsche-coronavirus-taycan/ FIRST ALFA ROMEO ELECTRIC SUV DETAILS EMERGE "One of Alfa Romeo's upcoming new SUVs will be the production version of the Tonale compact SUV concept that debuted at Geneva last year. According to Autocar, the Alfa Romeo Tonale will be joined by a new compact electric SUV to get the company's sales performance back on track. This will also be the automaker's first-ever electric production vehicle, though it won't be its first electrified model: when the Tonale launches in 2021, it will be offered as a plug-in hybrid." According to CarBuzz: "In terms of size, Alfa Romeo's electric SUV will be positioned below the Tonale and have similar proportions to the Audi Q2. The Audi Q2 isn't sold in the US, so Alfa Romeo's compact SUV could be too small for the American market. While the Tonale will share the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the Jeep Compass, the electric Alfa Romeo will be the first FCA car to use technology gained from the merger with PSA. It's expected to utilize a version of PSA's eCMP platform that underpins electric versions of the Peugeot 208, Peugeot 2008, Vauxhall Corsa, and DS 3 Crossback." https://carbuzz.com/news/first-alfa-romeo-electric-suv-details-emerge THE ELECTRIC BIKES THAT COULD GENUINELY REPLACE YOUR CAR "because of the coronavirus pandemic our hunger for owning electric bikes has been increasing so much that many cycling outlets are reporting that they can't get new stock fast enough. A recent survey of 20,000 motorists by the Automobile Association in the UK revealed that 40% of people intended to drive less in the foreseeable future. Meanwhile demand on the other side of the Atlantic appears similarly enthusiastic." Reports Techradar: "There are plenty of recent additions to the ebike marketplace, including the funky folding bike that is the GoCycle GX, the great Ampler Curt all-rounder or the beefy Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0 that can justify you leaving the car at home altogether. If keeping costs down is the main issue for you then something like the Gtech Sport or the Gtech eBike City are good value starting points." https://www.techradar.com/news/the-electric-bikes-that-could-genuinely-replace-your-car BYD ENTERS EV PASSENGER CAR MARKET IN COLOMBIA "After BYD announced an expansion to Europe, now the Chinese company is starting electric car sales also in Colombia. That's another market outside China, so maybe at some point in the future BYD will enter the U.S. too?" Says InsideEVs. BYD Tang BEV 600D: 82.8 kWh battery up to 500 km (310 miles) NEDC and up to 600 km (373 miles) at constant low speed 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4-4.6 seconds depending on version 0-50 km/h (31 mph) in 1.9-2.0 seconds depending on version all-wheel drive system output 360 kW (two 180 kW and 330 Nm electric motors - one per axle) https://insideevs.com/news/426366/byd-enters-colombia-ev-passenger-cars/ TESLA STARTS DIGGING AT GIGA-BERLIN "Now that Tesla received approval for foundation work from the Brandenburg State Office for the Environment, the work has now apparently begun in the usual rapid Tesla-tempo. A new drone video shows the first excavation works." Writes electrive: "“…we can say that Tesla has broken ground now”, the Twitter-user wrote to the uploaded drone video. Excavators started digging a large pit during the Pentecost weekend just past. As yet, no word from Tesla on this. As with the clearing, Tesla is carrying out all work at its own risk: If the entire project is not approved, Tesla must remove the foundations at its own expense. It is not yet clear when the building application will be approved since the hearings on the 370 objections to the building project could not take place as planned in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic." https://www.electrive.com/2020/06/02/tesla-starts-digging-at-giga-berlin/ FALLING COSTS BRING AUTOS, POWER ‘ON THE VERGE’ OF THE BATTERY AGE "With a steady run of design improvements, analyst are now projecting the price of battery-powered engines to be on par with internal combustion engines within three years. Elon Musk, founder of the electric car maker Tesla, has suggested that point could come even sooner, telling analysts recently that a coming battery announcement by the company will “blow your mind.”" Reports Washington Chronicle: "Even Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette, hardly a foe of fossil fuels, is touting the lithium-ion battery’s ability to soon be deployed across the U.S. power grid. “I think we’re on the verge of solving grid-scale batteries,” he said in an interview earlier this month. But battery evangelists, citing the technological advances made over the past decade, maintain shifting the world’s transportation sectors to electric vehicles, while logistically challenging, is more than possible. Tesla’s next big announcement was scheduled to take place this week in Texas or New York, with reports the company is already able to produce a battery at a cost on par with internal combustion engines, which would allow Musk to reduce the price of his already best selling Model 3 electric vehicle to compete with gasoline models." https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/energy/article/Falling-costs-bring-autos-power-on-the-15306554.php SUNCOR CEO SAYS ELECTRIC VEHICLES COULD DISRUPT OIL DEMAND AS SIGNIFICANTLY AS CORONAVIRUS "The shift to electric vehicles and other low-carbon technologies could disrupt crude oil demand on a similar scale to the coronavirus pandemic, Suncor Energy Inc’s chief executive said on Monday." Says The Globe and Mail: "The comments are a stark prediction in an industry that frequently downplays the impact of electrification and points to forecasts of rising global oil demand to justify new investment and pipeline expansions. Canada is the world’s fourth-largest oil producer and the sector accounts for 10.6 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product. The sector also faces mounting pressure from a growing number of investors who screen companies based on environmental, social and governance guidelines. Norway’s $1 trillion wealth fund in May blacklisted Suncor and other large oil sands producers for producing excessive greenhouse gas emissions." https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/industry-news/energy-and-resources/article-suncor-ceo-says-electric-vehicles-could-disrupt-oil-demand-as/ FRENCH ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET SHARE AT 7.5% IN MAY, 9.2% YEAR TO DATE "France saw a plugin electric vehicle market share of 7.5% in May 2020, triple the May 2019 result, in a steadily recovering overall auto market that is down 50% year on year (YoY). The cumulative 2020 EV result stands at 9.2% share." Says Max Holland for cleantechnica: "the Peugeot e-208, Renault Zoe, and Tesla Model 3 were the favourites. There’s an additional boost to the long-standing cash-for-clunkers program, with owners of older polluting vehicles (roughly pre-2006 petrols and pre-2011 diesels) able to get a €5000 trade-in bonus when buying a plugin electric vehicle. The boosted trade-in bonus is limited to a maximum of 200,000 vehicles, and has an income cap that ensures 75% of French households are eligible to participate. The trade-in bonus is stackable with the above incentives, for up to €12,000 off the price of a new BEV." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/06/02/breaking-french-electric-vehicle-market-share-at-7-5-in-may-9-2-year-to-date/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK Critics say EVs are on the for the rich, so what do you view as ‘affordable’ prices? Show #445 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ANDERS HOVE – PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: “I was listening this morning to your guesses about the pronunciation of AI.ME. Since the concept was released at the Shanghai auto show, and could be intended for China, this is probably a play on words, since "ai" is the verb "to love." It'S pronounced the same as "aye" in "aye aye, captain." So "aye ... me.". Reasons to have Sentry Mode: An email from Brian Thompson. “Willie Singletary, Council Candidate Hits Tesla Model 3 with Escalade and leaves scene.” AUTO SHANGHAI 2019: THE ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO LOOK FORWARD TO "it's no surprise that the Auto Shanghai 2019, which begins on April 16, will have more EVs and EV concepts on display than you can point a finger at. Here's some of the ones that we think will stand out." says Overdrive.in. Their picks are: Possibly of most interest to us is the production version of the Renault K-ZE. As the looks suggest, this will be the electric version of the Renault Kwid. It will be based on a heavily modified version of the Kwid's CMF-A platform and will have a 250 km range. The Buick Velite 6 is a heavily revised version of the second generation Chevrolet Volt. The PHEV version debut first and be powered by the same 1.5 litre petrol motor and 18.4 kWh battery pack. The full EV version is expected to have a 85 kW motor with a claimed range of 291 km." They also rate the NIO EP7 performance sedan, the Audi Q2 etron which is like an electric A2 for China only, the Aston Martin Rapide E and the Geely GE 11 - "the first global model from Geely's newly-created EV brand "Geely New Energy". Internationally it will be available under the Geometry brand. " http://overdrive.in/news-cars-auto/auto-shanghai-2019-the-electric-vehicles-to-look-forward-to/ RENAULT KWID EV (CITY K-ZE) REVEALED AT SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW "Renault has showcased the production version of the Kwid EV at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show. The EV is based on the same CMF-A platform as the Kwid, albeit with a few modifications to accommodate batteries and an electric motor. However the specifications of the same haven't been revealed yet." reports ZigWheels: "while it has not been officially revealed, the City K-ZE will have an approximate range close to 250Km. Inside, the cabin remains largely similar to the Kwid with a functional setup. Key highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which also gets online navigation, real time monitoring for EV features, 4G WiFi and voice recognition. the Renault City K-ZE packs PM2.5 sensors and an air quality control system, which evaluates cabin air quality and switches between interior and exterior air circulation automatically. It also gets features like a rear camera and a tyre pressure monitoring system." https://www.zigwheels.com/news-features/news/renault-kwid-ev-city-kze-revealed-at-shanghai-motor-show/33576/ NEW NIO ET PREVIEW ELECTRIC CAR REVEALED IN SHANGHAI "At the Auto Shanghai 2019, Chinese EV startup NIO showed off its all new sedan product lineup with the ET Preview and exhibited its entire NIO Power service solution as well as some cutting-edge technologies such as the 220kW permanent magnet synchronous motor electric drivetrain." reports Gasgoo for InsideEVs.com "The EV maker also showcased such products as the high-performance electric flagship ES8 SUV; the high-performance long-range, intelligent electric ES6 SUV; the ultrafast electric car, the EP9; the NIO EVE Vision car and NIO Formula E Team car, the NIO 004." https://insideevs.com/new-nio-et-preview-electric-car-revealed/ KARMA DEBUTS BEAUTIFUL PININFARINA DESIGNED ELECTRIC COUPE "Aside from the Karma Revero GT (yes, it’s an updated variant of the Fisker Karma from 2016) which is a production vehicle going on sale soon, Karma Automotive has an interesting two-door concept debuting at the 2019 Auto Shanghai. The so-called Pininfarina GT is based on the Revero GT and, as its name suggests, has been designed by Pininfarina." according to Anthony Karr from Motor1.com: "The official press release says this is the “first result of a partnership with Pininfarina, the iconic Italian design and engineering house,” which hints at potential future products developed in cooperation between the two companies. While the coupe has the exterior dimensions of the Revero GT, the overall appearance is sportier thanks to the shorter rear overhang and the long hood. We believe the two-door vehicle has the same powertrain as the Revero GT, which means there’s a BMW-sourced 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine, an onboard electric generator, and two electric motors for a combined output of 535 horsepower (399 kilowatts) and 550 pound-feet (746 lb-ft) of torque." https://insideevs.com/karma-debuts-pininfarina-electric-coupe/ ELECTRA MECCANICA SHIPS SOLO FROM CHINA TO NORTH AMERICA "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, Electra Meccanica Vehicle, has signed a contract with Crane Worldwide Logistics to move its single-passenger, three-wheel Solo model from its assembly plant in Chongqing to the ports of Los Angeles in the US and Vancouver, Canada." according to the website Automotive Logistics: "Electra Meccanica is currently ramping up mass production of its Solo electric vehicle at its Chongqing manufacturing facility in China for delivery to customers there and abroad in 2019. According to official figures from the EV maker it has 64,000 pre-orders on its books." https://automotivelogistics.media/news/157291 HYUNDAI & H2E: 1,600 FUEL CELL TRUCKS FOR EUROPE "Hyundai and the Swiss company H2 Energy (H2E) have confirmed their commitment to establishing a joint venture called Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility. The JV’s first goal is to open up the European hydrogen mobility ecosystem with fuel cell trucks." writes Carrie Hamel for electrive.com: "Hyundai will supply a total of 1,600 fuel cell-powered heavy trucks to Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility from 2019 to 2025 – 600 more than originally announced in a memorandum of understanding signed in 2018 between H2E and Hyundai. The Swiss company H2E specialises in the production and supply of renewable hydrogen in Switzerland with subsidiaries in Germany, Norway and Austria and they will be responsible for marketing the fleet." https://www.electrive.com/2019/04/15/hyundai-h2e-1600-fuel-cell-trucks-for-european-market/ MINI SURVEY CLAIMS CUSTOMERS ARE HAPPY WITH 75 MILES OF EV RANGE "In this survey from MINI USA, the brand asked 1,004 adults over the age of 18 (502 men and 502 women) a series of questions to determine what a necessary average range. While the questions asked were not disclosed to us, the brand claims that a resulting average range of 75 miles was deemed “sufficient”." says BMW blog: "MINI also learned from this survey that the majority of customers find EVs to be best used in city driving or for commuting. The latter of which is assuming it’s a relatively short commute. This information is likely to factor into the size of battery packs used in upcoming EV MINIs. The first one to come is the upcoming MINI E, which is said to use the same 42.2 kWh battery pack as the BMW i3 and get around 120 miles of range." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/04/15/mini-survey-claims-customers-are-happy-with-75-miles-of-ev-range/ TESLA'S CONSTANT PRICE CHANGES FRUSTRATE BUYERS "Last week, Tesla changed the prices on their cars again. In just the last few months there have been a huge number of price changes, particularly on the Model 3" says a Forbes article which goes on to track every price change since, a 12 point list which follows the changing face of Autopilot and the $35,000 Model 3 which came and (partially) went. It's a toughtful article by Brad Templeton and talks about buyers remorse, how cellphones have been commodotised. "Elon Musk has had a few things to say about this. First, he points out that prices on other maker's cars fluctuate all the time due to specials, dealer rebates, and plain old negotiation. He says Tesla is just doing it transparently and should not be blamed for doing the right thing. There is some merit to this, but the fact that somebody can get $3,000 off a car by negotiating at the dealer does not affect the price of existing cars nearly as much. He also points out that Teslas, unlike other cars before them, keep getting new features with software updates, which are given to all owners whose cars can handle them." https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2019/04/15/teslas-constant-price-changes-frustrate-buyers-even-more-is-likely-as-cars-become-computers/#6bba873e5da9 TOYOTA SELLS ELECTRIC CAR TECHNOLOGY TO CHINESE STARTUP IN RETURN FOR GREEN CAR CREDITS "Toyota has agreed to sell its electric car technology to Chinese startup Singulato, in a move which will give it preferential rights to buy green credits under China’s new quota system for electric vehicles (EVs)." according to City AM newspaper: "The green car credit system, introduced in January, requires a significant portion of car makers’ production or imports in China must be electric or hybrid. Those that do not meet the quota themselves can purchase credits from rivals that exceed it, but if they do not have enough credits they face government fines for their operations in China. Singulato is developing a mini EV which it hopes to release later this year. This will generate credits for the startup, some of which Toyota will then purchase. Toyota has already said that initially it won’t be able to meet its quotas without buying credits from others." http://www.cityam.com/276295/toyota-sells-electric-car-technology-chinese-startup-return CHEVY BOLT EUV NAME TRADEMARKED, ELECTRIC CROSSOVER COMING? "An interesting patent filing by General Motors hints the upcoming second electric vehicle from the automaker could be a high-riding machine. First unearthed by GM Authority, the Bolt EUV moniker has been trademarked by GM earlier this month and will be used for “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles.” says Motor1.com today: "As GM Authority reports, the name is probably going to be used for Chevrolet’s next Bolt-based EV. In March this year, the American manufacturer confirmed it will build the all-electric car at its Orion facility where the Bolt is currently produced. A new $300-million investment in the factory was also confirmed and a plan for approximately 400 new jobs at the site." https://www.motor1.com/news/344658/chevrolet-bolt-euv-trademark-rumors/ WHY TESLA DEFINES AMERICAN LUXURY, NOT CADILLAC OR LINCOLN "Americans are at our best when we look forward instead of at what others are doing. Cadillac and Lincoln used to epitomize this idea." says MotorTrend: "While Cadillac has spent the past three decades copying BMW's homework, and Lincoln spent the same time building cost-cut, rebadged Fords and Mercurys, the soul of American luxury escaped Detroit. Today, it has settled in sunny California. Tesla's tech and engineering is class leading, and delivers benchmark EV performance and range. And the vehicles are (relatively) expensive, requiring early adopters to be of a certain socio-economic status. They have become part of the fabric of today's luxury consumer society, a car many buyers of mainstream automobiles now aspire to own because of what it would say about their own status. Tesla is therefore a genuine modern luxury brand." https://www.motortrend.com/news/why-tesla-defines-american-luxury-not-cadillac-lincoln/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Wednesday 23rd May 2018. First a word for any EV groups meeting up soon. Like the group organised by Mark Goudie (Pron: Gordy) who organises regular EV meet ups with other EV owners here in the UK, so hello to the Northwest England Owners group on Facebook, and all the information you share and conversation you have. Any other groups listening? Let me know I’ll give you a shout. Mark also opened up the Tezla / Tessla debate – I think I just say what comes naturally BUT apologies to those who insist of Tessla, if I ever say Tezla I’m sorry. From now on I promise to try harder at Tessla. STUDY PREDICTS INCREASE IN ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES Starting with a study by Statista, reported by RideApart.com and then ono InsideEVs, which is like a russian nested doll of credit I'm giving there, they are forecasting global e-bike sales will reach approximately 40 million units sometime in 2023. That's a huge number, and it starts to make more sense when you realise 35million of the 40million will be in China. But even so, 5 million electric bikes is a big number for North America and Europe. They say: "Unsurprisingly, one of the strongest forces in the entire e-market equation is urban (and suburban) areas. An increasing amount of electric two-wheeler sales are coming from scoot-sharing services like BMW’s DriveNow program, or the San Francisco-based Scoot Network e-scooter sharing offering. Both of these services, in addition to buying large fleets of bikes, also serve as a sort of motorized, two-wheeled test-drive, introducing the non-riding public to life on two-wheels. The number of EV startups risen sharply for the last couple years as well, and signs point to that trend only intensifying." https://insideevs.com/study-predicts-huge-increase-in-electric-motorcycle-sales-by-2023/?utm_source=bambu&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=industry RIVIAN TO DEBUT 800-HP ELECTRIC TRUCK AT LA AUTOSHOW Detriot-based electric car startup Rivian Automotive is getting ready to take the stage later this year at the Los Angeles Autoshow and debut the company’s first electric truck. “according to Christian Prenzler for Teslarati. "Rivian is also creating an 800-HP version of the vehicle capable of more than 450 miles of range, making it an SUV having the longest all-electric range on the market" These will serve the popular American consumer truck segment which we don't have in the UK or Europe to such a large extent. It's easy to quote numbers on something not yet made, but they say 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. “It’s stiffer than a supercar,” said CEO RJ Scaringe in speaking with Engadget. “There are only a few cars in the world that are going to be as fast as ours, and we have a large five-passenger truck.” The price they say is in the $50K to $90K region which seems way too cheap for all that performance. Rivian have their factory, the old Mitsubishi plant in Illinois, which they bought in January 2017. https://www.teslarati.com/rivian-800-hp-electric-truck-la-autoshow/ ADVANCED E-BUSES HIT ROADS QUICKER THAN EVS The latest long-term forecast from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) shows sales of electric vehicles (EVs), increasing from a record 1.1 million worldwide last year to 11 million in 2025, and then surging 30million by 2030 which cost-parity with combustion is achieved. China will lead this transition, with sales there accounting for almost 50% of the global EV market in 2025 and 39% in 2030. The advance of e-buses will be even more rapid than for electric cars, according to BNEF’s analysis. It shows electric buses in almost all charging configurations having a lower total cost of ownership than conventional municipal buses by 2019. There are already over 300,000 e-buses on the road in China. https://www.windpowerengineering.com/business-news-projects/advanced-e-buses-to-hit-the-roads-quicker-than-electric-vehicles/ CHINA CUTS CAR TARIFFS "China will cut tariffs on most imported cars to 15 percent from July 1, the finance ministry said on Tuesday following a thaw in trade tensions with the United States" says the UK's Daily Mail. Whilst Bloomberg say: "For Tesla, a tariff cut will provide a boon until they set up local production. Tesla has been working with Shanghai’s government since last year to explore assembling cars in China. China saying that it will allow foreign new-energy vehicle makers to fully own auto factories as early as this year removed a primary hurdle for Elon Musk." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-22/china-is-said-to-cut-car-import-duty-in-boost-for-lexus-bmw http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-5756777/China-says-cut-auto-import-tariffs-July-1.html MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE COULD END UP BEING EVEN QUICKER Staying with Tesla and it seems Ryan McCaffrey from Ride The Lightning Tesla Podcast has a direct line to Elon - which some superfans of both would probably compare to that old saying about The Pope having a direct line to God. I'm joking. Mostly. However Ryan said on Twitter: It’s probably not *this* simple with manufacturing, but wouldn’t the robot just reach into the red caliper pile on the assembly line for the cars tagged as Performance? In other words, it’s just a different part (in practice if not technically so), not a different process." So he's talking there about the red brake parts seen on other performance models. To which Elon replied: "not promising anything, but we *might* be able to increase Model 3 Performance power output a little" However I think many buyers will be happy to stump up $54,000 for a very quick dual motor Model 3, rather than $78,000 (without Autopilot) for a stupidly quick Model 3. There will be those who always want the fastest, but basic dual motor would do me more than fine. https://electrek.co/2018/05/22/tesla-model-3-performance-version-higher-power-output-teases-elon-musk/ DS3 DESTINED FOR PARIS MOTOR SHOW Maybe DS are feeling like they're being left out of the EV party because Rachel Burgess in Autocar point out: "DS will reveal the electric DS3 Crossback compact SUV, a rival to the Audi Q2, at the Paris motor show this October ahead of its launch in 2019. The EV variant of the new car, which will run alongside more traditional powertrains, will be available from launch and will offer a range of more than 124 miles on each charge. The urban-focused car is likely to have a 50kWh battery pack. DS product boss Eric Apode told Autocar that "DS has to lead [the electric] innovation" within the PSA Group. "This is also because of pricing. It [electric technology] has to start with premium brands because the prices will be high," he said. "Then, as the pricing decreases, it can go to the other brands." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/electric-ds-3-crossback-be-revealed-2018-paris-motor-show MODEL 3 BRAKE ISSUES WILL BE SORTED SOON Finally on Tesla, Elon Musk has now admitted there was a braking issue with the Model 3. The braking issue was first pointed out by Consumer Reports. He said it can be fixed with a firmware update that the electric car maker will be rolling out in a few days. He said in a reply to Electrek: "Looks like this can be fixed with a firmware update. Will be rolling that out in a few days. With further refinement, we can improve braking distance beyond initial specs. Tesla won’t stop until Model 3 has better braking than any remotely comparable car." https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/teslas-musk-admits-model-3-braking-issue-promises-fix.html BP INVESTS $20 MILLION IN FLASH BATTERIES CNBC report on more oil money flowing into electrons: "BP said its venture capital arm was investing in Tel Aviv-based StoreDot as it looks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its operations. StoreDot develops so-called "flash batteries," lithium-ion batteries that it says can charge electric vehicles in a matter of minutes." "Ultra-fast charging is at the heart of BP's electrification strategy," Tufan Erginbilgic, chief executive of BP's downstream business, said in a statement on Tuesday. "StoreDot's technology shows real potential for car batteries that can charge in the same time it takes to fill a gas tank." The range on their batteries is said to be 300miles but the product won't even start to be commercialised until 2019. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/22/bp-invests-in-israeli-battery-startup-storedot.html NISSAN: VEHICLE TO GRID SERVICES WILL NOT DRAIN EV BATTERIES Finally Nissan Europe chief Gareth Dunsmore has responded to suggestions that V2G, which is being led in many ways by Nissan because of the CHAdeMO connector, and he says: "“It is not draining the battery, it is using the battery to balance the grid. It uses the battery, but it also puts energy into the battery; it is going up and down rather than draining. Draining the battery is not where the value is for the energy company or the customer.” Accoring to The Energyst: Mike Kerslake, UK technical manager for Chinese battery firm BYD, said V2G services for those customers may require a change of service model in terms of battery ownership and management. “Perhaps the vehicle owner doesn’t own the battery, but it is [instead] leased from an energy resources company, who also gets value from the vehicle to grid capability,” said Kerslake. “So there is quite a potential change in the way it works.” https://theenergyst.com/nissan-vehicle-grid-services-will-not-drain-ev-batteries/ I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Audi has entered the compact SUV market with their Q2. A busy design but looks good without going over the top with creases and features. 34 polygon shapes used on the outside design but you have to look hard. Turbo petrol and diesel engines. I preferred the petrol although it is the cheaper option. Seven speed S-Tronic gearbox. Tours nicely with a feeling of prestige although not super luxury. Can "personalise" such as full paint or contrasting pumpers Pricey. Starting at $41,100 plus on roads but if you can afford it without stretching too hard it certainly had the rewards.
