You might find this easier to share with animal-sympathetic non-EAs. Also: I work at Rethink Priorities, but I'm writing in a personal capacity.) A few weeks ago, I shared some suggested responses for a Defra consultation on welfare labelling. I was really pleased to hear that many EAs and animal rights advocates wrote in to support the proposal. I'm now sharing a similar opportunity: ~ten minutes of your time to speak up for ~4.5 million caged chickens. If you want to help, you have less than 48 hours to get this done! What's the public consultation? The Scottish government is running a public consultation on their proposal to ban cages for layer hens. Agriculture is a devolved power so Holyrood have responsibility for Scottish animal welfare. Let's be clear: cage-free chickens have dramatically better lives than caged chickens. Liberating caged chickens alleviates a great deal of suffering.[1] Over 80% of Scottish layer hens are already cage-free. A greater proportion than across the whole UK, this is a testament to hard work from animal welfare campaigners. Nevertheless, a ban still seems really important: Corporate commitments might not last forever. A ban can lock in campaigners' hard-won victories and pre-empt businesses backsliding Corporate commitments and welfare schemes might not always be met or enforced. A recent investigation from Animal Rising revealed that at least one English farm kept chickens in cages despite being RSPCA Assured. We could have greater trust that chickens are truly free from cages if they were banned The pro-animal movement will have another win, which builds political momentum for our cause. The Scottish government notes that Luxembourg and Austria have already banned cages; that Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are phasing them out; and that Australia aims to ban cages by 2036. If Scotland is attentive to other governments' bans, then other governments might pay attention to a Scottish ban 18% of Scottish layer hens are still so many - over a million - birds. None of them deserve to live their whole life condemned to a cage. The government are considering three options: 1. 2030 ban on enriched cage production 2. 2030 ban on installing new cages, and 2034 ban on enriched cage production 3. "Information campaign aimed at consumers to encourage all retailers who have not signed up to the retailer pledge and caterers to commit to stop stocking/selling eggs or egg products from enriched cages by 2034"[2] Option (2) is the default because the government thinks this best balances improving bird welfare and supporting the egg industry. This proposal is what the public consultation is about. I think pursuing (2) rather than (1) is really disappointing. Four more years of cages means up to 4.5 million layer hens will live their lives behind bars.[3] And there are only fifteen farms currently keeping caged layer hens in Scotland; do they really need four more years of warning? An instant ban on installing new cages and a 2030 ban on all enriched cage production seem eminently reasonable to me. How you can help You can access the public consultation here and submit your response by 25 June 2024. You don't have to be Scottish to respond. The consultation is divided into several pages. Only the 'About you' page is necessary. Page This is about Number of questions Animal welfare Will a ban on cages help chickens express natural behaviours and improve other welfare outcomes? 2 questions Policy proposal Do you agree with the proposal? 5 questions Capital costs Estimating cost to convert cage farms to cage-free 1 question Production costs Estimating cost per egg under c...

EA - Risk Aversion in Wild Animal Welfare by Rethink Priorities

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Risk Aversion in Wild Animal Welfare, published by Rethink Priorities on December 14, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Executive Summary Wild animals outnumber humans and captive animals by orders of magnitude. Hence, scalable interventions to improve the welfare of wild animals could have greater expected value than interventions on behalf of other groups. Yet, wild animals receive only a small share of resources earmarked for animal welfare causes. This may be because animal advocates are uncomfortable with relying on expected value maximization alone in a field beset by "complex cluelessness": There are compelling reasons for and against wild animal interventions, and none are clearly decisive. Reducing populations of fast life history strategists would likely reduce suffering. However, there is also reason to suspect fast life history strategists have enough rewarding experiences to increase aggregate welfare. Eliminating fundamental sources of suffering in natural habitats would reduce suffering. However, it could also differentially benefit species that many people believe have systematically worse lives. Prioritizing the most abundant groups of wild animals could generate the largest increases in aggregate welfare. However, the most abundant wild animals have relatively low and vague probabilities of sentience. Regardless of risk attitudes, inaction on wild animal welfare is difficult to justify. There are no areas of animal welfare with a larger scale. Even if the aggregate welfare of wild animals is net-positive, it is nevertheless almost uncertainly suboptimal. By accounting for considerations that decision-makers believe are relevant, incorporating risk aversion into expected value calculations may increase willingness to commit resources to wild animal welfare. Different types of risk aversion account for different types of uncertainty. Outcome risk aversion gives special consideration to avoiding worst-case scenarios. Difference-making risk aversion gives special consideration to ensuring that actions improve upon the status quo. Ambiguity aversion gives special consideration to reducing ignorance and choosing actions that have predictable outcomes. Different types of risk often disagree in their recommendations. A corollary is that robustness across different types of risk aversion increases choiceworthiness. Interventions that reduce suffering without altering the number or composition of wild animals have a greater probability of robustness to different types of risk aversion. Outcome risk aversion favors abundant groups of wild animals, while difference-making risk aversion favors wild animals who have a high probability of sentience. Ambiguity aversion is favorable towards research on wild animal welfare, whereas outcome and difference-making risk aversion only favor it under certain conditions. Risk aversion does not robustly favor farmed over wild animals or vice versa. Outcome risk aversion prioritizes wild animals due to their abundance. Difference-making risk aversion favors farmed animals. However, it also favors some diversification across types of animals. Ambiguity aversion favors helping farmed animals over wild animals, and basic research to help both groups. Although complex cluelessness affects many domains, wild animal welfare may be a particularly high-stakes example of it. Alternatively, moral uncertainty about the permissibility of interfering with nature may explain a reluctance to act on uncertain evidence. Julie Kent became the Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet in July 2016. She is the longest-serving ballerina in American Ballet Theatre's 79-year history. She began her dance training with Hortensia Fonseca at the Academy of the Maryland Youth Ballet in Bethesda, MD and attended summer sessions at American Ballet Theatre II and the School of American Ballet before joining American Ballet Theatre as an apprentice in 1985. In that same year, Kent won first place in the regional finals of the National Society of Arts and Letters at the Kennedy Center. In 1986, she was the only American to win a medal at the Prix de Lausanne International Ballet Competition, and she became a member of ABT's corps de ballet.Kent starred in the Herbert Ross film “Dancers” in 1987 opposite Mikhail Baryshnikov. She was appointed a Soloist with ABT in 1990 and a Principal Dancer in 1993, the year in which she became the first American to win the Erik Bruhn Prize in Toronto and was named one of People Magazine's “50 Most Beautiful People.” In April 2000, Kent achieved another triumph, becoming the first American to win the “Prix Benois de la Danse.” Later that year, Kent starred in the motion picture “Center Stage” directed by Nicholas Hytner. In 2012, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Performing Arts from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts as well as a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from Dance Magazine. Since 2014, she has been the Brand Ambassador for HANIA New York, a luxury line of hand-knit cashmere in NYC.During Kent's long performing career, she has acquired a vast repertoire dancing over 100 ballets, including all of the major classical, dramatic and neo-classical roles in works by Marius Petipa, George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan, John Cranko, Anthony Tudor, Michel Fokine, Agnes DeMille, Merce Cunningham, Jose Limon, Jiri Kylian, Ronald Hynd, Ben Stevenson and Christopher Wheeldon. As well, she has had roles created on her by John Neumeier, Lar Lubovitch, Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Alexei Ratmansky, Nacho Duato, Stanton Welch, James Kudelka, Jorma Elo, David Parsons, Jessica Lang, and Natalie Weir. Her appearances as a guest include invitations from the Mariinsky Theatre, Teatro alla Scala, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Berlin Staatsballett, Australian Ballet, Bayerisches Staatsballett, Teatro Colon, Ballet de Santiago, and others. In August of 2015, after a 30-year performing career, Kent was named Artistic Director of ABT's Summer Intensive, a comprehensive summer dance program for 1,400 students at five campuses across the US.Since Kent arrived at The Washington Ballet, she has brought important classical and contemporary masterworks into the repertoire, including her and Victor Barbee's own critically acclaimed staging of The Sleeping Beauty, described by New York Times former chief dance critic Alastair Macaulay as “one of the world's finer Sleeping Beauties.” Kent's steadfast commitment to the development of artists, rising choreographers, and the creation of arts education initiatives that benefit the community of our Nation's Capital, showcase her dedication to creativity, expression, and to propelling ballet forward into the 21st century.Kent is married to The Washington Ballet's Associate Artistic Director Victor Barbee, and, as a mother of two children, she has helped redefine the image of the American Ballerina.

Our COVID Summer on the lake is sadly drawing to a close. In a few months, the so called Canadian 'snow birds' would typically be heading south to Florida, the Carolinas or the gulf of Mexico to escape a brutal Toronto Winter but this year, the border to the US is closed to cars and folks are making sure their cottages are stocked with firewood and supplies so they can ride out the winter up North. For us, it's been a magic summer. The boathouse we started renovating back in March is starting to take shape. I don't know that we'll have it ready for Winter but it's definitely in better shape than it was. For a guy who likes to write copy, record podcasts and create marketing ideas, learning how to demolish, renovate and rebuild something has been an incredible journey of learning with a few failures but some memorable victories. If this sounds a bit echoee, it's because I'm in a very barren boathouse looking at stud walls, bare plywood walls, some gorgeous hand made timber trusses and a ghetto kitchen that will hopefully be gone by this time next month. If we were in Queensland, finishing would be easy but with the winter temperature getting down  to minus 35 celsius which is about the same temp in Fahrenheit, we're going to need a heap of good insulation and maybe a cosy wood fire to help us combat conditions from November through to May. ...and I guess right now we're all overcoming setbacks and challenges which is what this episode is all about. But before we get into that, I'd like to welcome some new Bestagents members including Ben Stevenson from Estate Realty in Queanbeyan NSW Dan and Ness Brugghink from Wallan in Victoria Chris Brown from New Vision Real Estate in Glenwood in the Hills District of Sydney Kim Turner from Mount Pleasant in Perth WA Peter Stone from Real Estate of Distinction on the Northern NSW Coffs Coast and Zieglar Coelho from beautiful downtown Brampton right here in Toronto Canada I'm pumped to be working with our new members and so impressed with how everyone is jumping in to access Bestagents resources to win more listings and make more sales. The marketing library is getting a solid workout and our brand new online pre-listing questionnaire is receiving great feedback from sellers and paving the way for the best possible listing presentation because we've set it up that sellers are taken straight to the member's client review and free ebook page when they submit their pre-listing answers. I'm getting a clear message that great marketing is more important now than it has ever been before. Bestagents memberships are exclusive to one agent or team per area, suburb, city, town or district. Each area is different so message me ray@bestagentsinc.com if you'd like to know more and to check and see if your area is available. ****** A lot of people are facing challenges right now that they have never faced before. Life is tricky enough without throwing a global pandemic into the mix and it's fair to say that if you're under 75 years old, you've never had to face any kind of global crisis. If this was some kind of bizarre social experiment, you'd have to wonder at the extremes many people are experiencing right now. For some, who get trapped in the downward spiraling vortex of failure and despair, hope quickly fades as they grapple to acquire the resources to cope. While others...  are reveling in the forced changes these times are bringing and grabbing some amazing opportunities. My guest this week is Albert Garibaldi, a 20 year veteran, CEO of The Agency, an innovative real estate business operating in California's Bay Area south of San Francisco. You don't need to spend too long with Albert to know and understand he is living breathing proof about acquiring the best mindset to handle everything and anything. He's also a 3 book author including The Passion Punch which is a book we get into during this episode and stays firmly in the top 1% of agents within his national group. You'll discover Albert has a simple yet very powerful formula for life, family, business, health and success and I'm grateful for the opportunity to connect with him as he peels back the layers that helped him overcome some significant learning disabilities and prosper in one of real estate's most competitive markets.  Albert's awesome book: Connect with Albert Albert's awesome book: Passion PUNCH to Success
