Sending a message in a bottle has been romanticized for centuries. People have even cast bottles for scientific purposes. And as author B.J. Hollars tells us, it helped one Wisconsin veteran connect with humanity on a deeper level. Hollars shared this story about a message in a bottle at a live storytelling event hosted by Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Wisconsin Life” and the Chippewa Valley Writers Guild. It was held on Nov. 14, 2024 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin at The Lakely.

It's another family comedy(?) drama featuring a dying parent and a couple of weird kids.  I know what you're thinking.  How many of these films can you possibly do for the podcast?  Well I'm going to guess at least two more.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

Just before 10 AM on Tuesday, June 9th, 1964, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, hundreds of people were gathered in First African Baptist, prepared to march to the new Tuscaloosa County Courthouse where they planned to drink from water fountains and use restroom facilities that were supposed to be only used by whites. Around the church were gathered hundreds of police, members of the Ku Klux Klan, and other deputized whites. At 10:15 AM, after the arrest of Reverend T.Y. Rogers, the pastor of First African Baptist, the police attacked the church. They beat those who attempted to leave with clubs and cattle prods. Then, the door being closed and locked, they brought up a fire truck, and blasted away the stained glass windows, filling the sanctuary in some places ankle-deep with water. Then they fired tear gas canisters through the windows, driving those within outside, where they were beaten, and over a hundred were hauled off to jail.  This was Bloody Tuesday, now a nearly forgotten inflection point in the Civil Rights struggle, overshadowed by the concurrent campaign then ongoing in St. Augustine, by national events in the weeks to come, and by the violence of Selma in 1965. John M. Giggie had preserved the memories of Bloody Tuesday, and complex struggle of justice in Tuscaloosa in his new book Bloody Tuesday: The Untold Story of the Struggle for Civil Rights in Tuscaloosa.  John M. Giggie is Associate Professor of History and Director of the Summersell Center for the Study of the South at the University of Alabama. He is creator of "History of Us," the first Black history class taught daily in a public school in Alabama. Giggie is also director of the Alabama Memory Project, which seeks to recapture and memorialize the over 650 lives lost to lynching in Alabama, and a founding member of the Tuscaloosa Civil Rights History and Reconciliation Foundation.   For Further Investigation Three short essays on Bloody Tuesday by John Giggie: “How Tuscaloosa's Bloody Tuesday Changed the Course of History,” Time.com, June 7, 2024 Remembering Bloody Tuesday, Alabama Heritage, June 2024 The Tuscaloosa Campaign and Bloody Tuesday, Encyclopedia of Alabama Books on the Civil Rights movement on Tuscaloosa, related to subjects in the podcast, or mentioned in the podcast: Clark, E. B.J. Hollars discusses his book "Wisconsin for Kennedy: The Primary that Launched a President and Changed the Course of History." The book gives a careful account of the JFK's campaign in the 1960 Wisconsin presidential primary in which he eventually secured a narrow victory over Hubert Humphrey. The book includes portraits of some of the people who played very important roles in the campaign, including Jerry Bruno, a forklift operator from Kenosha (with a 9th grade education) who became one of the coordinators of the candidate's travel arrangements- and went on to serve a similar function in President Kennedy's administration. The book also examines the crucial role that Jackie Kennedy played in her husband's campaign.

How the Kennedys rallied to Jack's side, from Bobby, Ted and Jackie to many Wisconsonites who joined the fight to win the primary. Jack eventually won in Wisconsin, took West Virginia and marched on to the eventual nomination.  This book chronicles the contributions of so many that helped Jack win, and watched in anguish when Jack's life was taken in 1963.

For a year, B. J. Hollars traveled the Midwest, or Flyover country as he refers to it, in search of monsters, aliens, and oddities. Midwestern Strange: Hunting Monsters, Martians, and the Weird in Flyover Country (University of Nebraska Press, 2019) documents his encounters with the weird and wonderful. Hollars examines aliens who share pancakes with a plumber, Mothman, Hodag, and other strange creatures and experiences in small town America. In Midwestern Strange, Hollars shares his visits with the people who have experienced and study these creatures. His goal is not to debunk the mysteries but instead to seek them out as a way to show the importance of these stories and experiences to small towns and the people who are part of the lore. Hollars deftly combines memoir and journalism offering informative and often humorous stories of the monsters, Martians, and weird that may encourage you to take a road trip through flyover country and visit some unusual Midwest landmarks. John Krasinski has established himself as one of the most exciting talents as an actor, writer and director, engaging audiences on the big and small screen. He directed, co-wrote and stars in A Quiet Place. On the small screen, Krasinski can be seen as the title character in Amazon’s adaptation, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, inspired by the novelist’s impressive franchise. Krasinski last directed and starred in The Hollars alongside Anna Kendrick, Richard Jenkins, Margo Martindale and Sharlto Copley, which premiered to great acclaim at Sundance 2016 and was released by Sony Pictures Classics. Krasinski also starred as a Navy SEAL in Michael Bay’s Benghazi thriller 13 Hours. Through his own Sunday Night banner, Krasinski executive produces Lip Sync Battle on Spike TV alongside Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Merchant, based on the popular segment on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon which he created with Merchant and Fallon in 2013. The hit show is in its fourth season. Sunday Night recently made an overall producing deal with Paramount TV. Krasinski notably starred on NBC’s Emmy®-winning smash hit The Office for nine seasons, where he portrayed the charming boy-next-door Jim Halpert. His recent film credits include the Gus Van Sant directed Promised Land, which he also wrote with Matt Damon; Disney Pixar’s Monster’s University in which he lent his voice; legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated film The Wind Rises; and Cameron Crowe’s Aloha. His additional film roles include performances in the uplifting family film Big Miracle; Something Borrowed; Nancy Meyers' It's Complicated; Sam Mendes’ Away We Go; the animated smash hits Monsters vs. Aliens and Shrek the Third; George Clooney's Leatherheads; Ken Kwapis' License to Wed; Christopher Guest's For Your Consideration and Bill Condon's Kinsey. The Hollars screenwriter Jim Strouse is a storyteller who collects life’s intimate moments, weaving his films from the fabric of the everyday: the way a wife speaks to her husband, a simple haircut, a tire swing. The resulting films 'New York, I Love You,' 'The Winning Season,' and 'People Places Things,' can almost be said resemble family photo albums brought to life. In 'The Hollars,' directed by and starring John Krasinkski (The Office), John Hollar is forced to return to his hometown after news of his mother’s illness, and there reconnects with his dysfunctional family.
