Storage Trust Realty was founded in 1974 by Columbia residents Gordon and Mickey Burnam. The family went on to found the self-storage company StorageMart in 1999, which began with one location on Rangeline. StorageMart is now the largest family-owned and privately operated self storage company in the world, and they're still growing. StorageMart president and chief investment officer Mike Burnam joined Fred Parry in-studio for the hour Saturday on 939 the Eagle's "CEO Roundtable." Mike also led the effort in 2021 to help StorageMart acquire Manhattan Mini Storage for more than $3-billion. During the one-hour interview, Mr. Burnam discussed his father growing up in Moberly and moving to Columbia when Mike was five. Kirksville Savings and Loan loaned the Burnam's the money to open the location on Rangeline. Burnam tells listeners that while they worked very hard, they also got lucky. Today, StorageMart has more than 300 locations, about 800 employees and they have eight locations in Columbia. It's now an $8-billion dollar company. That is billion with a B:

Host Bob St.Pierre is joined by Dr. Jessica McGuire, a wildlife biologist and Quail Forever's Working Lands for Bobwhite Quail Framework Coordinator, and Joe Burnam, Georgia DNR's red-cockaded woodpecker biologist who also has an extensive background in bobwhite quail biology. Burnam and McGuire discuss how focusing on creating great red cockaded-woodpecker habitat using prescribed fire on the southeastern United States' open pine woodlands also can help create a bobwhite quail population explosion. Episode Highlights: • McGuire explains the shared habitat need for an open pine forest between the red-cockaded woodpeckers living near the canopy to the gopher tortoises living at ground level (and sometimes underground), and bobwhite quail living on the ground and in between. • Burnam explains the “Safe Harbor” program that incentivizes landowners to create habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker by removing the fear around the Endangered Species Act. • McGuire points landowners to learn more about conservation programs available for improving wildlife habitat in the southeastern bobwhite quail range by visiting with a Quail Forever biologist. Find a QF Biologist near you. Reminder: Document the bobwhite quail you encounter to help us measure their nationwide population by using the new Bobscapes mobile app.
Welcome back everybody to Self Storage Income! Today we have an exciting guest, Mike Burnam, on to talk about the current state of self storage markets - particularly smaller, tertiary, and subprime markets - as the bubble created by the pandemic is starting to pop. Mike is the CEO of StorageMart and has been in the industry for over 42 years, with over $4 billion worth of self storage. He has experience with being publicly traded then went private, and has operated in the US, Canada, and the UK. So what's going on with storage? Debt is harsh, ChatGPT is disrupting Google's dominance, and large competitors, like Public Storage, is experimenting with more and more remote & digital solutions in their properties. ExtraSpaceStorage, just bought over $500 million to buy a portfolio of over 100 properties. These changes will determine the future of storage, especially impacting smaller markets in rural areas while high population areas approach these changes head-on. Find out more in this episode! StorageMart was founded in Columbia in 1999 , and its first location was on Rangeline. It's now the world's largest privately-owned storage company and operates in 18 states, six Canadian provinces and in the United Kingdom. The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
Beyond Reimagination: Improving your client outcomes by understanding what big tech is doing right (and wrong) with mental health apps Curt and Katie chat about the big tech “disruptors” in the mental health space and what therapists can learn from their tactics to support clients. We look at who is using mental health apps, what mental health apps are getting right (and wrong), and how therapists can take what is working and work differently to more effectively serve our own clients. This is a continuing education podcourse. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we look at what therapists can learn from big tech disruptors in mental health We have seen more and more tech companies and apps come into the mental health space and have heard more and more folks worried about how their private practices will be able to survive. We are revisiting a topic we covered in a presentation at our Therapy Reimagined 2021 conference to help modern therapists navigate this new mental health landscape. Looking at the gaps in mental health treatment and how big tech is working to “fix” them Exploring the goals from the Rand report on fixing mental healthcare in the United States Mental Health apps (with many broad definitions) Access to lots of different types of services and self-help A one stop shop with a full range of services Direct negotiation with insurance companies The types of technology used in mental health apps and the risks and benefits of these advances Algorithms Geo location data Complex payment structures Outcomes and feedback What mental health apps are doing well for clients Getting clients into therapy much more quickly Decreasing costs for consumers Increasing flexibility and availability Not requiring for things to happen in real time (asynchronous therapy) What mental health apps are getting wrong McDonaldization and commoditization Proprietary treatment methods and incentives for specific worksheets or staying within the app Misalignment between the goals of the client and the goals of the corporation Self-driven, leading to folks to potentially getting insufficient resources Individual versus community focus Caseloads and potential for therapist income (as well as burnout and poor care) Concerns about the additional risks that can happen with mental health apps “[In] this profit versus service model… there's this idea that you are not a client, not a patient, you are a consumer and someone to market to. And so you'll be marketed to as a client throughout the app. And as a clinician, you become a marketer for those things behind the paywall. And that is terrifying. Because it's not based on treatment.” – Katie Vernoy The apps are not bound by HIPAA, but instead the SEC Data sharing and Alexa suggesting supplements to address client mental health concerns Additional legal and ethical risks Who is using app-based mental health services? Therapy veterans are moving to apps Access is not actually improved The reasons that clients are moving from a traditional therapist to therapy apps Outcomes across different types of apps and different types of clients Niche apps are more effective than generalist apps What we can do to move our therapist practices forward? “Now I've seen a number of people describe… if these therapy apps are going to be the McDonald's of therapy, well, we're the prime rib! You actually have to consider are you providing actual prime rib? Or are you more like a Carl's Jr?” – Curt Widhalm Using the benefits of technology to decrease friction for your clients accessing therapists Increasing flexibility and creativity Be a better therapist and understanding the digital therapeutic alliance Paying attention to laws and ethics, scope of practice, and treatment planning Our Generous Sponsors for this episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide: Turning Point Financial Life Planning Turning Point Financial Life Planning helps therapists stop worrying about money. We find Spock plus an interview with Burnam and Spock's dad Serek!
Star Trek the Next Generation came into its own in it’s third season. The Third season of original Star Trek gave us Turnabout Intruder and Spock’s Brain. As Star Trek Discovery wraps up its third season the regular Regular Joes, plus adjunct Joe Brian Mix, assess how the series fared. What worked, what didn’t? Did it serve it characters well? As this was the third major redirection in three years are we getting close to what we expect from in the flagship series from a streaming service that leaned heavily into this franchise? Lastly how does it hold up against the other two Trek series that aired this calendar year? We also have some Random Topics and a round of What’s in the Box. Because, well … the economy is not gonna bounce back on its own. Thanks for listening!

A couple weeks back I sat down with Mr. Daniel Valverde. Dani is the Pastor for Casa Vida Nosara and a very good friend to the Burnam family. Dani has a very interesting story to tell and most everyone agrees he is a high-quality individual. In this conversation, we covered a ton of ground ranging from how Dani made it to Nosara from San Jose, the incredible luck he has for high-quality surf each year for the annual ‘Jesus Went’ surf contests, his current ministry activities along with the goals he’s trying to achieve, and how he abandoned his studies in architecture to become a preaching minister plus a ton more. Dani grabs a couple of laughs at my expense as I share the most embarrassing surf story I have while surfing in his contest a couple of years back. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of serving the Nosara community with Dani in multiple arenas and I’m proud he is here following his heart at the highest level. One interesting thing about Dani is how committed his wife is to the ministry and following their collective true calling. In fact, most of the children in the area Nosara area know ‘Miss Maria Jose’ from her many years teaching at Del Mar Academy and/or serving the community via the many opportunities Nosara provides. They have 2 wonderful children and they are easily found surfing many mornings in Guiones. If you’re looking for a church congregation of the standard Christian variety in Nosara you should consider Casa Vida’s 2 options: The English speaking service is on Sunday’s at the main beach in Guiones right in front of the parking lot. The Spanish speaking service is at 5pm at the Casa Vida Campus grounds. Dani’s congregation has a 501c3 qualified donation strategy in place to help with Mercy Homes, renovations, education and scholarship programs, plus multiple natural disaster or other emergency situations.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 4, 2019) – If you walk across the University of Kentucky campus and ask someone if they know Emmett Burnam, that person may get a puzzled look on his or her face and say ‘no.’ However, if you ask someone if they know “Buzz” Burnam, you’re likely to get a quick nod and a smile, followed by ‘I sure do!’ In the fall of 1969, Emmett “Buzz” Burnam traveled the short distance to the UK campus from his native Winchester, in Clark County, to enroll in classes and compete for the Wildcats on the football field. Half a century later, he is a longtime fixture in the Office of Enrollment Management, as Director for Diversity Undergraduate Student Recruitment. For this edition of the Behind the Blue podcast, UKPR’s Carl Nathe sat down with Burnam to talk about what UK was like when he arrived 50 years ago, what things have changed for the better, and what hopes he has for the future of the university he loves so much. Become a subscriber to receive new episodes of “Behind the Blue” each week. We all want to own a business and step out of production. But do we want this because we’re better at managing our business or because everyone else is trying to get there? When does it make sense to stay in production? In what cases isn’t growth a positive change? And how can we get better at prospecting? In this episode, John Burnam talks about finding our strengths and the tactics he uses to prospect and nurture his database. Three Things We Learned From This Episode More volume doesn’t always mean more profit (03:00-04:30) Don’t grow too fast. There are many challenges that come doing so, and in some cases, fewer units can sometimes lead to more income. At the end of the day, it’s not about how many units we make but how much profit we have. But every now and then our ego makes us blind to this and we just want to be able to say we sold a certain number in sales volume. Staying in production isn’t a bad thing if it suits our skillset (06:00-07:00) We all want to have the title of business owner, but the truth is that some of us make more money while in production because this is what we’re good at. We have to ask ourselves what our strengths are, because if we allow ourselves to be led by our pride, we might end up playing to our weaknesses. Categorize the contacts in your database (18:00-19:00) Categorizing everyone in our database makes it easier for us to organize our work and decide when we need to call certain people. Also, we need to ensure that each call we make has a purpose, whether to build rapport, ask for referrals, or promote something. Resources Take your mortgage business to the next level. Visit nextlevello.com for more information. Click here to schedule your free no-obligation Next Level Coaching Call: https://nextlevello.com/schedule Whether we’re running a company or still in production, we need to organize the contacts in our CRM and create a folder with tasks for each day of the week. This way, we can ensure that nobody in our database is neglected. When it comes to staying in touch with people, it’s also important to find a way to provide value and to have a reason why we’re calling. Otherwise, the people in our database will stop answering our calls.
