Hello and a very warm welcome welcome to the Flaghunters Golf Podcast.  Today, we are fortunate to have my two great friends on the Pod. Grant Geertsen I have known for 25 plus years. Grant has taught Golf here on the Monterey Peninsula for that same time and is currently teaching at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach. AJ is a student at CSUMB(California State University at Monterey Bay) and currently on the Golf team. Notably, CSUMB is one of the top Division 2 Golf programs in the U.S.    In this conversation, Grant, AJ and I discuss the student teacher relationship and how important it is to have honesty and, an open discussion, no matter what it is. We also talk about the process from top to bottom. Lastly, celebrating success.    As a result of this sacred process, AJ has had himself quite a Summer. He has won a big local event. He and his parter just qualified for the USGA Four Ball and has consistently played well. The moral of the story is, get going and trust the process.     It was a privilege to be a part of this conversation and it's a nice x-Ray in to a student/ coach relationship. I have no doubt that AJ's trajectory is upward and Grant will continue to Sheppard him that way. Cheers to Grant and AJ for coming on.                                                 Jesse

[00:00:58] I was lucky enough and blessed enough to, become really good friends with the kid whose parents took me under their wing and he played basketball.[00:01:44] I was lucky enough to play for a person who completely changed the trajectory of my entire life.[00:02:08] He gave us just a lot of great life lessons…my confidence was like completely changed and he gave me something to look forward to.[00:02:51] I was just trying to learn as much as I could through playing.[00:03:52] The people that I knew in coaching said, Hey, you'll get to be a teacher. [00:04:28] He asked me to leave my $32,000 a year job, for $2,000 a year job, and somehow convinced me to do it…he was given another job at Seattle Pacific. I was given a promotion to be the head coach…Leon Rice called me out of the blue and basically offered me an opportunity.[00:05:38] I was really comfortable in LeGrand and, being working for somebody else, didn't really appeal to me that much, to be honest. [00:05:57] Just wanted to get back to having my own program where you can create your own culture. [00:07:12] And then the Monterey Bay, job opened and it's in Monterey. [00:09:23] Then also the big thing with him was team.[00:11:20] The spirit of the coaching versus the letter[00:12:13] Coaching is just like an ever-evolving situation…you have to be willing to adapt and adjust. [00:12:54] I've had to realize along the way that, I just don't know everything.[00:13:45] You just have to be willing to, admit to yourself that you don't know everything and be hungry for knowledge and all the different areas.[00:14:07] This kid might need my help, but because of their relationship with social media and how they interact with people. They may not know how to ask for it. So how do I look for the signs?[00:15:19] I was really hard on them, I never gave praise of any kind, it was really just like about toughness and teamwork and this and that, but you have to be mentally and physically strong… And then my communication, like back then, it was just like, do it this way; it's my way or the highway. And now it's more like trying to explain why it's important to do these things…Back then it was really more just, they did what you asked them to do because you do it with a coach and being the coach doesn't qualify you anymore. You have to do a lot more to earn their trust.[00:18:00] I have a hard time getting excited about doing the things that you're supposed to do.[00:18:15] Putting them on the court, that's me saying, I trust you.[00:20:05] The conversations that I'm having with our kids over the years are about real life.  Making them think in bigger terms.[00:20:24] Why do you think basketball is your only way out of your situation?[00:20:38] I'm just always real, if you're messing up, I'm just going to tell you're messing up and if you're doing well, I'll tell you, but I'm just not going to, get excited about either end of that.[00:21:58] And in college, the biggest difference is you have a chance to choose who you work with.[00:22:18] The first part of culture is who you allow to be in it.[00:22:39] Just like an employer of a company, you hire good people that fit your culture and, and maybe you hire good people that don't fit your culture.[00:23:16] I feel like your first obligation should always be to the team.[00:24:36] You don't hit a home, run on all of those relationships, but it has to be a constant effort on your part…But like I said, you got to be who you are, right? You can't fake it.[00:26:29] Everybody has done laundry. Everybody has had to walk their kids to class.[00:26:44] The other thing that you learn is what not to do[00:27:08] When I was at Boise, what they did was really great was they learned how to quantify things that I didn't really realize were quantifiable at the time.[00:29:38] There's a book, Gridiron Genius[00:30:59] A lot of those low points in my life, having, given me perspective on being able to help kids who are going through their low points…My team is 20 plus years in the making, Thanksgiving morning when I'm texting, Hey, happy Thanksgiving. I got to sit down and go through about 20 years’ worth of rosters to get to all of these people.[00:32:21] I fully understand that life is hard, because life was never easy for me… Being depressed is normal. Being sad is a normal. Sometimes if you're angry, that's normal, it's like really all about how you deal with it.[00:33:44] I'm living in a great place. And I feel like my journey has allowed me to do what I always envisioned myself being able to do, which is hopefully be able to touch people in a positive way. [00:34:29] Everybody has to have a goal for what they want out of whatever it is they're doing.[00:35:45] Be good at the job you have versus worrying about what the next one is.[00:36:03] If you're looking forward to the next job, I think it takes some of the focus away from the job that you're doing.

Earlier this spring, the California State University system announced it will hold most fall classes online. Online classes existed at CSU before the pandemic, but never on this scale. Now many in academia are now wondering if virtual classes are a short-term solution or a long-term trend. Professor Dan Fernandez teaches physics at CSU Monterey Bay. He’s taught the classes dozens of times to scores of students in his 24 years at CSUMB, but this spring was different. It changed on March 16, with the global pandemic and CSU, the largest university in the nation, decided to shut down and then reopen teaching online. There were no classrooms, no desks and the students were miles apart. Professors, many of whom had never taught a class online before, had just five days to figure it out. “I think for most of our faculty it was a challenge,” said CSUMB Chief Information Officer Chip Lenno. Fortunately, there were already systems in place. The university established a learning management

SALINAS, CA FRIDAY, APRIL 13th -- On Friday the 13th at CSUMB’s City Center in downtown Salinas there will be a gathering of poets, Latinx poets to be exact - and although some people may consider this date a harbinger of maliciousness, we’re poets - so we revel in all things odd, dark and uncanny. Perhaps this gathering will be something like a witches sabbath, since these prophetic portents will be travelling from all over the country and convening in New Aztlán. The Latinx Poetix Symposium will be a day filled with poetic discussions, workshops, readings, and perhaps some spells? Join us on Friday the 13th between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for poetic programming. Here is the lineup for the symposium: Raquel Salas Rivera, 2018-19 Poet Laureate of Philadelphia Farid Matuk, author of The Real Horse and My Daughter La Chola Tatiana Luboviski-Acosta member of La Vidx Locx, a collective of queer Latinx poets & author of The Easy Body Erick Sáenz, editor of Cheers from the Wasteland and author of the forthcoming Sussuros a Mi Padre Vickie Vértiz, educator and author of Palm Frond with Its Throat Cut The symposium is part of a 2 day event, precluded by the Writers from the Edge Reading Series on Thursday, April 12th at 6 p.m. on CSUMB’s main campus University Center which will include a reading by all five Latinx Poets. Symposium organizers, Angel Dominguez (author of Desgraciado) and Rachelle Escamilla (host of Out of Our Minds) hope that this gathering of Latinx poets will help create a path for an inclusive writing community on CSUMB’s main campus, but also in the heart of Salinas. The goal of the symposium is to provide a safe space for complicated discussion that are specific to the Latinx community. Please see www.latinxpoetix.org for more information.

This episode has a sensational title, but the conversation was rarely dramatic. In this episode our guest is Lili Muñoz, who is a long-time friend of Oz and a graduate of CSUMB. Lili's capstone at CSUMB was titled "Whiteness in Contemporary American Media" and talks about the inequalities and misrepresentations minorities still deal with when portrayed in the media. A heavy topic that should have been explored in great detail. Unfortunately the mild Salinas weather, and a couple of adult beverages, led the conversation from terrible first dates to K-Pop. President's Speaker Series - Video

The Hollywood Actor and Environmentalist Proves How Living Green Is Good For You and Your Wallet What do George Clooney, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ed Begley Jr. have in common? These Hollywood actors can add the title Environmental Activist to their résumé. Although green is their shared motto, while Clooney purchases Versace dresses for his lady and DiCaprio snags Los Angeles Laker tickets for his on-again/off-again girlfriend, Begley buys his wife hemp thongs. Begley, 61, said, "It's tough trying to be organic and a hip person." But fear not, Begley is one of the hippest folks in the green world. So hip, he was invited to speak at the President's Speaker Series, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB), about the green life he leads, in which people can "live simply, so others can simply live." The World Theater and President of CSUMB treat students and the public to view well known speakers throughout the year. The President's Speaker Series is free of charge to all who attend. To kick off this round, Begley was selected as the first speaker. "Arguably, he's one of the first people in popular culture that has embraced a green lifestyle and engaged it," said Chas Croslin, World Theater Box Office Analyst. The fact that Begley is a popular individual with plenty of movies under his belt is an "additional benefit of reaching out to people that may or may not be familiar with the aspects of a green lifestyle," said Croslin. Both the director of the World Theater, Joe Cardinalli, and the Operations Manager, Phil Esparza, worked in combination to invite Begley to the Series. Esparza has known Begley for over 30 years. He said Begley is a "genuine human being, even if he is in Hollywood." Esparza adds, Begley is "very knowledgeable and is a great spokesperson." In addition to Begley's work on several TV series such as "Arrested Development," "Veronica Mars," and "Six Feet Under," Emmy nominated actor Begley utilizes his energy elsewhere. Having served on environmental boards like The Environmental Media Association and The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, Begley continues to work with other organizations like Friends of The Earth and has been green since the 1970s. It all began during Begley's childhood, while he grew up in smoggy Los Angeles. "I just got fed up with it after the 50s and 60s, being in that horrible choking smog, it hurt my lungs so badly," recalls Begley. Among the smog as an impact, Begley's father, a man who lived through the Great Depression, was also a strong influence. As Begley was raised, he remembered his father "saving every bit of tin foil, every bit of string, turning off the lights and water." When Earth Day began in 1970, Begley's father passed. However, Begley said he "did all the activities in the 1970s much to honor him [his father]." In his 20s, Begley felt "poised and ready" to tackle environmental issues because "it seemed like the right thing to do." His work as an actor in the past and present poses difficulties.
