Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone naturally produced in the intestines during meals. It helps regulate blood sugar and weight by increasing insulin, slowing stomach emptying, and promoting fullness. Medications like Ozempic® and Wegovy® mimic the effects of GLP-1 but can be expensive and have unpleasant side effects. Listen in this week as Dee explores research on foods and probiotics that naturally boost GLP-1, offering similar benefits without the high costs and side effects.References:De Silva, A., & Bloom, S. However, there isn't a particular diet that will make or break your gut health nor can you eat a nutrient-poor diet and expect probiotic supplements to keep your gut microbiome in good shape. Simply aiming to eat a balanced, nutrient rich diet is the way to go. While antibiotics have a negative impact on your gut health, it does come with a plus side. Given that antibiotics eliminate all bacteria – good and bad – the timeframe following an antibiotic treatment is a great time to focus on fixing your diet so you can repopulate your gut microbiome with the appropriate strains. While many of us blame our poor willpower for our cravings, it's usually our gut microbiome that is to blame. Luckily, there are specific strains one can supplement to help increase GLP-1 and GABA production to stimulate satiety and reduce anxiety, which helps reduce cravings overall.
A Five Part Series on Hallowed Waters Podcast “Below the Meniscus”- The Evolution and Art of Fly Fishing Below the Surface with Nymphs and Wet Flies – A Five Part Series on Hallowed Waters Podcast From its Roman Empire era origins in Macedonia with the Red Fly, and early beginnings with Dame Juliana and her “Treatise” dangling her beautifully concocted flies to fool trout and Atlantic salmon on the River Ver spring creek at her St Alban's Sopwell Nunnery, is how fly fishing had its humble beginnings. But it was with the modern foundations of Ronalds, Skues, Sawyer, and Cutcliffe in England, on the hallowed chalk streams of the Rivers Itchen and Avon; and North Country, Wales and Dartmoor small freestone rivers, that the nymph and wet fly had their evolution. Thus the going below the meniscus art form has now become the most lethal way of taking trout worldwide with the onset of Euro Nymphing. Three accomplished guest figures of these genres: ex- pat Davy Wotton, George Daniel, and one of England's iconic chalk stream fly fishing authors, Terry Lawton, along with Hallowed Waters Podcast host and author: Matthew Supinski, discuss the evolutionary magnitude, science, artistic beauty, techniques and gear, fly designs, but often questionable approaches with Euro and competitive fishing, that impacts the trout and fly fisher with these highly effective tactics. The final episode discusses the impact on the angler and how it has transformed them from a fly shop and consumer's perspective, with a highly skilled Euro nympher and fly shop guru guest: Torrey Collins. In today's episode with Dr. Colleen Cutcliffe, you'll hear us take a deep dive on: 1. The evolution of antibiotics and how their broad spectrum also harms the gut microbiome, potentially causing long-term issues like food sensitivities, chronic illnesses, and conditions beyond the digestive system, such as obesity and neurological disorders. 2. The recent discovery of the keystone probiotic strain Akkermansia, which resides in the gut lining, and its crucial role in preventing gut lining deterioration. 3. Akkermansia's benefits, including producing proteins that stimulate GLP-1, a hormone involved in regulating insulin and glucose response to prevent high glucose spikes and promote weight loss. 4. How neurons in the gut communicate with the brain, influencing cravings and other functions, and recent studies indicate that neurological conditions like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's may manifest in gut neurons before brain cells. In this episode of One day with Jon Bier, Jon talks with Colleen Cutcliffe to break down the complexities of microbiome science. Listen in as Colleen highlights the importance of replenishing and maintaining a thriving gut microbiome in a modern society that overlooks its role as a cornerstone of health and wellness. She discusses the importance of the bacterium Akkermansia and why its regulation is key to gut health. Finally, Colleen discusses signs to look for which indicate a recovering microbiome, and how to ensure that recovery following chemo or taking an antibiotic. Colleen Cutcliffe is the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Pendulum. Colleen has more than 25 years of experience leading and managing biology teams in academia, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology. Prior to co-founding Pendulum, Colleen was the senior manager of biology at Pacific Biosciences and a scientist at Elan Pharmaceuticals. Powerful Quotes by Colleen There are so many diseases that are associated with the depletion of Akkermansia that it's emerging as this keystone strain that you simply have to have. After you take an antibiotic, your microbiome is in its most vulnerable state. You have a blank slate, and what you decide to feed it now can make or break the playing field. Key Highlights A healthy microbiome “covers” us in bacteria, viruses, and fungi in order to be protected from allergens that are always present in our environment. Because of our modern focus on scrubbing ourselves clean of these bacteria, those allergens have the opportunity to directly interact with our immune system. This is why we're experiencing an increase in allergies, asthma, immune and autoimmune responses. Multiple studies, including one by Mayo Clinic, reveal that children who are consistently on antibiotics are systematically more prone to obesity, diabetes, celiac disease, allergies, ADHD, etc. This is all due to their microbiome being unable to recover from the prolonged administration of antibiotics. The microbiomes of the healthiest people are composed of 3-5% Akkermansia, which is a huge number for a single strain. After a bit of trash talk on Twitter, Coach Symmes took some time out of a Wednesday evening to talk about ECU football, his coaching career in college and the NFL and, of course, Duke football. Coach Symmes coached at Duke during the Cutcliffe era before moving onto Indiana where he worked with current Blue Devil OC Kevin Johns. Coach Symmes also had stops at Florida, USC (the one in South Carolina) and with the Pittsburgh Steelers. During this informative conversation, you'll learn about what a defensive analyst does, the challenging life of a coach and what made the 2013 Duke team so special. We'll give Symmes a pass for thinking that Indiana made the field goal at the end of the Pinstripe Bowl. I think his glasses were broken or something. Oh, and we mention Miami. Blerg. As CEO and co-founder of Pendulum Therapeutics, she works to turn scientific discoveries into real products that hack and heal your microbiome and its associated body systems. At Pendulum, her team identifies and isolates new bacterial strains then combines those new strains to create unique probiotics.“We really worked hard on ways to modulate post-postprandial glucose spikes through the microbiome,” Colleen says. The result? Pendulum's Glucose Control lowers blood glucose spikes by 33 to 34% for people with type 2 diabetes. “What we didn't realize was how many people who don't have type 2 diabetes were going to end up benefiting from it.”This conversation homes in on sugar management and a broad range of research that's exploring what you can do about managing your glucose to keep up your mental acuity (less brain fog, sharper thinking) and live a longer life. Science has discovered that as you age:You have reduced ability to metabolize sugar. Your microbiomes become less diverse and depleted of certain key strains that are important for sugar metabolism. If you improve glucose control, you see reduced neuronal inflammation and improved cognition. In the past decade, especially, sugar dominates a lot of the conversation around diet and health. It's been studied, substituted, moderated, restricted and demonized. With that type of focus, you lose the bigger point. “You can't completely cut out sugar,” Colleen says. “You do need sugar. Not all sugar is bad for you all the time. Every cell in your body, except for your colon cells, need glucose in order to survive, in order to replicate, in order to perform functions. All of the things that allow you to be a human being require some amount of sugar."She wants you to know what's happening to cause the change in metabolic processing as you age and what you can do about it, like:How to understand your blood glucose range and what fluctuations mean. How to track your blood glucose and what to do about peaks and dips. How to improve your focus, sharpness and mental endurance through diet and fitness.“I'm a scientist, so I'm always going to say more data is better,” Colleen explains. “[Especially] when you're trying to make improvements and you're making these micro-adjustments in your life, and you want to understand what impact are they having.”See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this middle ground, Colleen envisions a future in which medicines are derived not from chemistry but one of nature's greatest gifts: the human body's microbiome. The safety and effectiveness of the company's first microbiome-bolstering probiotic, Pendulum Glucose Control, is welcome news for more than 120 million Americans living with diabetes and prediabetes, struggling to control their blood sugar.Colleen's pursuit is personal.
