Read transcriptLock your squad into formation, charge your bolters, and prepare your genetically-enhanced blue skin for a parade of panzer-busting action because this week on Play Comics we're putting boots to dirt in the grim, industrial wastelands of Rogue Trooper, the 2005 third-person shooter that took Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons's iconic tale of a genetically engineered super-soldier and transformed it into a cover-based combat experience that somehow managed to capture the grit, the fury, and the desperate isolation of being a lone warrior against overwhelming odds. Originally deployed across PS2, Xbox, and Wii, Rogue's had more platform changes than a soldier has armor repairs, eventually landing a remaster invasion on PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, proving that some grimdark British sci-fi concepts just refuse to stay buried in the trenches. Speaking of refusing to stay down, we're genuinely thrilled to have Steve Morris from Shelfdust joining us for this deep dive. When he's not busy operating as the marketing manager for 2000 AD itself, essentially being the guy who decides which corner of Judge Dredd's dystopia gets the spotlight treatment, he's the critical voice behind one of comics fandom's most thoughtful, hilarious, and incisive podcast ecosystems. Steve brings both the insider knowledge of how 2000 AD operates AND the fan's perspective that makes him the perfect guide through this particular adaptation's journey from glossy magazine pages to console warfare. Together, we'll investigate whether this hyper-violent squad-based adventure managed to capture what makes Rogue Trooper such an enduring character, a soldier stripped of everything but his wits, his weapons, and three AI companions implanted directly into his equipment. Does the game understand the existential dread of being created solely as a weapon? Can it convey the isolation that defines the character while also providing the kind of multiplayer mayhem that defines the era? And perhaps most importantly: does this game explain why blue skin became the ultimate badge of being expendable in the far future? Grab your tactical visor, synchronize your biometric links, and prepare for an episode that's more explosive than a Rogue Trooper ambush and considerably more thoughtful than you'd expect from a game about murdering aliens on a lifeless planet. Learn such things as: What happens to character development when your entire supporting cast is literally just AIs living in your equipment? Does covering the same ground across four different console generations change how audiences perceive the story being told? How do you make a character who exists specifically to be expendable actually matter to players emotionally? And so much more! You can find Steve on Bluesky @Shelfdust which makes sense since you can also find him on the Shelfdust website. And if you want to check out the 2000 AD stuff, there's always and the If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you're interested in. Topic: The 1990 DC Comics miniseries World's Finest by Dave Gibbons and Steve Rood. Contextual Background of the 1990 World's Finest (02:51 - 05:34) The miniseries releases shortly after Crisis on Infinite Earths and John Byrne's Man of Steel reboot (1986). Post-Dark Knight Returns, Batman and Superman's relationship had changed, characterized by distance rather than camaraderie. ️ Plot Overview (05:34 - 08:14) Lex Luthor and Joker team up to take over Gotham and Metropolis with intertwined but largely separate schemes. Batman and Superman investigate, culminating in events involving an orphanage, a nuclear reactor, and city-wide explosions. Decompression and Story Structure Critique (08:14 - 11:34) Discussion of story pacing issues: The narrative is elongated with side elements (e.g., orphan kids) that do not cohesively tie in. Emphasis on character moments over tight plotting. Initial Impressions and Artistic Elements (11:34 - 17:59) Chris praises the visual storytelling and art, referencing the use of parallel imagery and distinctive flashback watercolor style. Noted the deliberate design choices to echo Silver Age and Max Fleischer era Superman and early Batman. ‍️ Characterization of Villains and Supporting Cast (17:59 - 30:39) Joker portrayed in a "zany," less menacing mode, more a prankster than murderously malicious. Lex Luthor features a robotic hand and operates like a mob boss, balancing businessman and villain traits. Character Dynamics and Relationships (30:39 - 40:21) Lois Lane and Bruce Wayne's interactions highlight mutual suspicion and gradual respect. Batman and Superman's knowledge of each other's secret identities is subtle initially, revealed more overtly in third issue. ️ Themes and Continuity Notes (40:21 - 50:27) Orphanage is a thematic midpoint between Gotham and Metropolis, symbolizing shared orphan backgrounds of Batman, Superman, and villain. The book emphasizes orphans and legacy but does not fully develop these thematic elements. Technical and Artistic Praise (50:27 - 52:58) Art and character design praised for classic yet fresh look; great use of tableau pages showing Gotham and Metropolis. Noted the Batmobile's stylish design and Batman's athletic, sleek physique. Character in Action: Batman and Superman (52:58 - 59:55) Batman characterized as efficient, brutal, and action-focused. His use of Batarangs and disguises recognized as authentic. Superman rendered as powerful but more grounded Burn era 'cop,' balancing investigative journalism and heroic strength. Artistic and Thematic Highlights (59:55 - 01:09:46) Memorable moments include Superman carrying a nuclear reactor into space to save Metropolis. Subtle details such as Clark Kent's mannerisms and investigative approach noted. Overall Assessment and Legacy (01:09:46 - 01:14:36) The miniseries serves as a valuable snapshot of Batman and Superman dynamics post-Crisis and pre-mid-90s crossovers. While the narrative is considered "vibes-over-story," the series offers essential character moments, iconic imagery, and era-specific continuity. Conclusion and Promotions (01:14:36 - 01:19:44) Guests share social media handles and podcast info. Hosts plug "Trade School" podcast and Certain POV Discord for further comic discussions.

Before Watchmen shocked readers with the idea of a staged alien invasion meant to unite humanity, The Outer Limits had already explored that same chilling premise more than two decades earlier. “The Architects of Fear,” one of the series' most haunting episodes, aired in 1963 at the height of Cold War anxiety. In it, a group of idealistic scientists concoct a desperate plan to save the world from nuclear annihilation by creating a common enemy—an extraterrestrial threat—through grotesque transformation and deception. The story's moral gravity and tragic human core—anchored by Robert Culp's anguished performance—make it an emotional blueprint for Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen. Where Moore's Adrian Veidt executes his plan with cold perfection, The Outer Limits delivers the same concept as human tragedy rather than triumph. It's a tale not about success, but about sacrifice and futility—a broadcast parable warning that even the noblest lies can't save us from ourselves.

Hear about how spiritual leader and author David Gibbons felt that he wrote his memoir as a way to process his life and his experience, calling the book The Shape of My Eyes. In an honest conversation, Dr. Gee and David break down what “model minority” means for Asian Americans and African Americans. They consider how this concept also worked toward putting the two racial communities in opposition to one another by weaponizing the term. They continue Dr. Gee's awareness around how the unity between Asian American and Black communities can be perpetuated. Also, hear how David tries to get Dr. Gee to go white water rafting. Detective Comics, better known as DC, has delivered some of the most iconic superhero characters of all time such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Harley Quinn. In 1986, the first issue of Watchmen appeared which was something altogether different. A violent, transgressive, political, and sexual take on superheroes, the series (now a graphic novel), was troubling to some but loved by others. The talents behind the graphic novel include write Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. Since its debut, the popularity with its alternate timeline has only grown as it became a movie simply titled Watchmen, written by David Hayter and Alex Tse, and directed by talented and enigmatic Zack Snyder.Receiving mixed reviews, the movie may have been before its time as comic book films were just at the cusp of dominating the movie box office. In this first of two episodes, your co-hosts talk about the backstory of source material and the dream of Zack Snyder trying to make what many thought as an impossible source material to adapt into what is now considered a beloved cult film by many.

This is a new adaptation of the classic 1986 comic book, so while the plot points of this film are openly discussed, it can hardly be called SPOILERS. Watchmen Chapter 1 is DC's newest full-length animated film, kicking off a two-part adaptation of the acclaimed 1986 Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons comic book. The movie was directed by Brandon Vietti, who joined this episode to discuss Watchmen Chapter 1. Vietti is a longtime DC animator known for his work on Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Batman: Under the Red Hood. In this episode, Vietti discusses the process for adapting the storyline. He also discusses the other media adaptations, including a 2008 Motion Comic, the 2009 live-action Zack Snyder film, and the 2019 HBO Watchmen sequel/spin-off series. For Watchmen, Vietti had to walk a difficult line, staying faithful to the comic while making the story work in an animated format.
