She is also the author of multiple books, including Making Coaching Matter: Leading Continuous Improvement in Schools, with Sarah Woulfin and Kerry Lord (Teachers College Press, 2023).In our conversation we explored a number of questions around continuous school improvement, including:* You promote “intelligent failure” as an organizational disposition, where teachers and leaders are intentionally making mistakes. This feels counter to most school cultures. What conditions need to exist for this to be a reality?* Is a “culture of coaching” the answer to the problem of the status quo? If not, what else?* If you could wave a magic wand and change one thing about schools as they currently are, what would it be?Listeners will walk away with a better appreciation for the complexities of school improvement, along with clear action steps for engaging in this work.Take care,MattWhat we are reading* Isobel listed several favorite professional titles, including The Right Kind of Wrong by Amy Edmondson, Being Wrong by Kathryn Schultz, The Voltage Effect by John List, and Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales.* Debra enjoyed The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. She shared the following quote from this novel: “Fiction is the great lie that tells the truth about how the world lives.”* Matt is planning to start The Reformatory by Tananarive Due soon, a Goodreads Choice Award Nominee for Best Horror (2023). * Isobel just posted her December edition of her newsletter, in which she shares more about the instructional design practice of “co-developing recipes—which are NOT the same as checklists or scripts”.* For more information on continuous school improvement, check out my conversation with Isobel's co-author Sarah Woulfin along with Rachael Gabriel. In constant rain and cold, Blissful learns the power in facing her negative feelings and using them to spur her to action rather than resignation. The trail has yet to get hard on the Appalachian Trail (AT) but the rain is drenching.Blissful can't stop in the cold and swarms of mosquitos even to eat, and is full of frustration but fellow hiker Ingrid catches up and gives her courage, suggesting they sleep inside the next shelter to stay dry. It's not far or difficult to the shelter at Nahmakanta Stream and she grabs a corner spot.Wet and cold, she is reminded of the book Deep Survival  by Laurence Gonzales where he says, "“Stop denying and begin surviving. You don't have to be elite or perfect, just get on with it and do the next right thing.” And this is exactly what she does, focusing her negative emotions to doing the next right thing - to stay as dry and warm as possible, and to keep moving ahead. MUSIC: Poema del Pastor Coya by Angel Lasala  as played by Alison Young, flute and Vicki Seldon, pianoSupport the show

So many people live in ongoing crisis, and the role of spiritual community is to support life and wholeness. What can we learn from the science of survival, and how does it dovetail with our spiritual lives?

"Mike and Corey exchange experiences as they profile the book "Deep Survival," Who Lives, Who dies, and Why by author Lawrence Gonzales. 1. Be here now—no other thought than the present. Keep an up-to-date mental model of changing conditions.2. Everything takes eight times as long as it's supposed to. It's the friction rule.3. Mistake - Make a plan and worship the plan despite changing conditions. More and more effort will somehow overcome the friction.4. The more complex the plan for overcoming friction, the worse things get.5. "We live like fish in an aquarium. We are the domestic pets of a human zoo we call civilization. Then we go into nature, where we are least among equals. There we are put to the test. Most of us get out unscathed, which can make us even more vulnerable to the ever-changing conditions before us—even arrogant. We have been there, and done that."

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  Navigating while relying on GPS can make getting somewhere easier but it rarely results in making mental memories of how to get there again.  Getting lost is perceived differently for individuals.  If you still maintain your sense of self in your current surroundings, you may not consider yourself lost.  After all, you still have where you came from.  However, eventually you start to feel a sense of urgency to find your ultimate destination.  According to Laurence Gonzales in his book, Deep Survival, most people do not think of retracing steps back to their original start point immediately.  Wandering ensues, sometimes frantically, that results in becoming even more confused.   At some point there will be a fork in the road.  Stay put and accept your fate or forge a new plan and follow it methodically to safety.  Learning to eat a plant based diet and reversing lifestyle diseases can be somewhat similar.  Taking charge of your health requires navigation into unknown territories.  The maize of choices and information can be overwhelming.  Often we fall back to our old ways.  Tips for plant based survival: Positive mental attitude toward new foods and new ways of cooking.   Make changes that begin with familiar foods and change the ingredients to point toward a new healthier direction. Make mental memories of what works such as go to meals that everyone enjoys and practice them. Develop a mantra for your goals.  Perhaps a mental checklist of items to avoid.  State or write your goals frequently. Maintain a sense of humor when things don't go as planned.  Email me at jami@doctordulaney.com.  Website: doctordulaney.com Deep Survival Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzales Links to studies discussed on maintaining health during cancer therapy and decreasing a future risk of atrial fibrillation. https://www.jacc.org/doi/10.1016/j.jaccao.2022.07.006 https://www.healio.com/news/cardiology/20221019/higher-bmi-tied-to-early-af-risk-in-young-men https://cardiovascularbusiness.com/topics/clinical/heart-rhythm/marijuana-meth-cocaine-and-opiates-all-linked-heart-rhythm-issues https://www.amazon.com/Plant-based-Wellness-Cookbook-Generations-Cooking/dp/1733967702/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-nc-drs1_0?cv_ct_cx=doctor+and+diva&dchild=1&keywords=doctor+and+diva&pd_rd_i=1733967702&pd_rd_r=b4b3e11f-e7c1-4a71-a571-54903174e969&pd_rd_w=jpaTr&pd_rd_wg=GNibG&pf_rd_p=8f655ecb-bc8c-4750-9088-950aa74d52dd&pf_rd_r=JMDW81JEWW3K2VMA0JND&psc=1&qid=1608320722&sr=1-1-88388c6d-14b8-4f70-90f6-05ac39e80cc0

We're back after a long break for our semester programs.  Sorry for the wait, but we're glad to be back. In this episode, I'm joined by Nick Daniel of Dartmouth-Hitchcock in New Hampshire. Nick has taught AWLS courses regionally and internationally and has taught wilderness medicine in such locations as the Adirondacks, White Mountains, Mexico, Africa, Guatemala, Russia, and Panama. He spent a month in the Indian Himalayas teaching medical students while providing medical care, as well as time in Haiti. He has completed his FAWM and earned a diploma in mountain medicine. Nick's research interests in wilderness medicine include hypothermia, frostbite, altitude medicine, mountaineering psychology, and hiker preparedness. Recently, he and his coworkers from Dartmouth's wilderness and emergency medicine program came out to our campus for an introduction to wilderness living/survival skills.  Our conversation ranges from talking about Nicks's background and experience in the outdoors, the program for wilderness medicine fellowships at Dartmouth, as well as some insight into the psychology behind who finishes trips and who doesn't, and why that is.  I had a great time talking with Nick, and working with him on the course here at our campus in southern VT. I'm pretty sure you'll get a kick out of our conversation as well. This was the face he now donned for every public moment in these dark days. He was in trouble, and under no circumstances would he let it show. The investments he had made in the good times were now worthless. Ever since the waves of panic and the dread of complete collapse had gripped the region, commerce had careened to a violent stop; his tenants had no means of making money, much less paying him. Who knew when the next dollar would come? The economy was like concrete—it had moved well when it was wet, but now the scorching heat of oversupply, panic, and free-fall had dried it up overnight. Later, people would swear they had seen the terror behind his eyes. But in those first dreadful days, they had refused to admit it even to themselves. This story isn't from 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a glimpse of the grim inner reality of a landlord and investor in 1931, a paraphrase from a story told by Timothy Egan in his brilliant and award-winning book The Worst Hard Time. In the early 1930s, a terrible collision of deadly drought, global economic instability, and the dire environmental consequences of man's misuse of power gave rise to a cataclysm of dust storms that devastated the southern high plains of the U.S. Nothing like it had been seen before; and to this day, the total ruination of the ecosystem of the Great Plains is often credited as the worst environmental disaster of human history. Not surprisingly, few lived to tell the story, or if they did, it was a story too painful or shameful to recount. I can't help but connect the stories in The Worst Hard Time with elements of our current global challenge. No one knows the outcome of these times in which we find ourselves. There is no crystal ball; there are no material guarantees. Yet by Grace there is a brilliant, kind Teacher who wants to guide us through all of it into Life. And there is a map of human history that can educate our souls to survive, to endure, and to make the way for future generations to thrive as a result of abiding wisdom applied in the midst of an unprecedented crisis. Which brings me to a question: In times of crisis, when life shifts in some distinct ways from normal to survival, who lives, who dies, and why? Laurence Gonzales wrote a compelling, research-based narrative exploring the mystery behind this question in his fascinating book Deep Survival. In the hope of offering some soul-strengthening counsel from shapers among us as well as shapers of old, my aim in this podcast is to pause and consider some very practical aspects of “surviving survival” that we could lean into today in order to become even more the kind of men who can receive life and bring life, in partnership with God, for such a time as this. Specifically, I highlight 10 ideas that can help us first receive love and then lead in love, even in this uncertain hour. Friends, let us stand together, holding onto the hope that Paul expressed to the community of God's people in Galatia: the hope that we who have chosen to receive the gift of God's generously available life are given the resources we need for union with God and to express our faith in love. Not in our own strength, but in union with the Trinity today. Paul assured us that we do have direct access to remarkable qualities of God's own life and experience: Joy that overflows, Peace that subdues, Patience that endures, Kindness in action, a life full of virtue, Faith that prevails, Gentleness of heart, and Strength of spirit.(Galatians 5:22-23, The Passion Translation) And in the midst of these unique times, may we both receive and offer this kind of faith-filled life into our spheres of influence. May the fruit of our union with God be so nourishing and strengthening to those around us that the world will know that God is with us and we will not be shaken. As One, Morgan P.S. As shared in the podcast: Want to join Cherie and me for 30 minutes of refreshment and soul centering? It'd be a great gift to your spouse or nourishment for you or even a mid-day date! Insight + Practice = Transformational Flow

Rhett Smith Podcast

One of the things that I have come to believe through my work with clients, and through my own personal work, is that insight alone is usually not enough to create change. That insight has to be coupled with practice, and lots of it to create the change, and ultimately the transformation we desire. We could also say the same if we flipped it in reverse. Practice alone, without any insight, will also not create change.   I have been greatly influenced by this idea through a couple of key writings. One is the work of my mentor and friend Dr. Terry Hargrave out of Fuller Theological Seminary, his book Restoration Therapy: Understanding and Guiding Healing in Marriage and Family Therapy, along with my training with him, has been transformative in my life. His model of the Pain and Peace Cycle, alone with four very practical steps has been a game changer in my life and the life of many.   I have also really been influenced by the work of Angela Duckworth, and more specifically, her book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. In her book she delineates between deliberate practice and flow, and talks about how flow comes out of deliberate practice.   What I have experienced through the Restoration Therapy model is that the more individuals, couples, etc, practice their Pain and Peace Cycles, they can often get to flow states where it feels very natural, and habitual. But that transformational experience is only experienced because of the combination of insight and practice. Without both, flow and change isn't experienced. I'm currently reading a really good book by Laurence Gonzales called Deep Survival:Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why. In this book he writes the following: While the pathways from the amygdala to the neocortex are stronger and faster than the ones going the other way, some ability may remain for the neocortex to do the following: First, to recognize that there is an emotional response underway. Second, to read reality and perceive circumstances correctly. Third, to override or modulate the automatic reaction if it is an inappropriate one; and fourth, to select a correct course of action. (location 876-886/Kindle) He then goes on to write: When you learn something complex, such as flying, snowboarding, or playing tennis or golf, at first you must think through each move. That is called explicit learning, and it’s stored in explicit memory, the kind you can talk about, the kind that allows you to remember a recipe for lasagna. But as you gain more experience, you begin to do the task less consciously. You develop flow, touch, timing— a feel for it. It becomes second nature, a thing of beauty. That’s known as implicit learning. The two neurological systems of explicit and implicit learning are quite separate. Implicit memories are unconscious. Implicit learning is like a natural smile: It comes by way of a different neural pathway from the one that carries explicit memory. (location 896/Kindle)   After I read this I thought to myself, this are the steps Restoration Therapy model of the Pain and Peace Cycle. And he's talking about deliberate practice and flow states.   Why is all of this important? Because whether we are talking about life and death situations like in Deep Survival, or conflict in relationships like in Restoration Therapy, or athletic and artistic performance in Grit....they are all about a certain level of awareness (insight) that requires us to practice, and it's in doing so that we create change and make better decisions, and move closer to transformational flow.   In this episode: I talk about the 4 steps of the Restoration Therapy model I talk about deliberate practice and flow I connect the brain theory writing in Deep Survival to both Restoration Therapy and Grit I talk about how you can experiment with your own insight+practice= transformational flow this week.   Resources Mentioned Restoration Therapy: Understanding and Guiding Healing in Marriage and Family Therapy by Dr. Terry Hargrave Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth Deep Survival:Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzales

Laurence Gonzales knows how to write...and survive. Why do some live when so many others die? "...to survive, you must first be annealed in the fires of peril." "I found otherwise rational people doing inexplicable things to get themselves killed—against all advice, against all reason." Reason doesn't control our actions. Why did Scott's crew perish in Antarctica while, against all odds, Shackleton's crew survived and even thrived in the same circumstances? Brain functions...psychology of risk-taking and survival They apply to stressful, demanding situations... * divorce * losing a job * illness * injury * running a business in a rapidly changing world Experience, training, and modern equipment can betray you. What's in your heart is what can save you. > > > > The farther one goes, the less one knows." ~Tao Te Ching > > > > > > How did I get into this and this and how do I get out of it again, how > does it end?" ~Søren Kierkegaard > > -------------------- How Accidents Happen -------------------- > > > > Of each particular thing ask: 'What is it in itself, in its own > construction?'" ~ Marcus Aurelius ( https://amzn.to/2x72SFW ) > > You need skill and superior emotional control. Lesson #1: Remain calm, do not panic. Turn fear and anger into focus. Stay "cool" by not allowing your emotions, i.e. "hot cognitions," to get away from you. Four Steps (only 10-20% can stay calm and think in an emergency): * Perceive * Plan * Take the correct action * Rapidly adapt Why do we ignore the obvious and do the inexplicable? What is the source of power that has us block out all the right information that is trying to save us, which results in our death—or the death of our business, marriage, etc.? Rule #1: Face reality...but keep it simple When you're in a "high state of arousal," only the simplest of inputs are going to get in. Dark humor cuts through the fear, the clutter, and the noise. Look death in the face and come up with a wry smile. Find the droll, wondrous, and inspiring...or kiss your ass goodbye. " Survivor Personality: Why Some People Are Stronger, Smarter, and More Skillful atHandling Life's Diffi culties...and How You Can Be, Too ( https://amzn.to/2x8D6B1 ) "—survivors laugh at threats...playing and laughing go together. Playing keeps the person in contact with what is happening around [him]." Fear is good. Too much fear is not. Insider language/slang is for those who get it. Besides, it's terrifying to use the real language of what you're embarking upon just before you do it! In the moment your IQ rolls back to that of an ape! Plato understood that emotions—the horse—can trump reason so use the reins of reason on the horse of emotion. The intellect without the emotions is like a jockey without a horse. "When you walk across the ramp to your airplane, you lose half your IQ." Fear puts me in my place. It gives me the humility to see things as they are. When you're in a demanding/stressful situation you're not all there. You are in a profoundly altered state when it comes to perception, cognition, memory, and emotion. Emotion comes from the Latin verb emovere , "to move away." It woks powerfully and quickly to to motivate behavior.
