Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Ending Open Philanthropy Project, published by Dusten Muskovitz on April 2, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Effective immediately, my wife and I will no longer plan funding for EA or EAs. There's enough money with OpenPhil to wind down operations gracefully, paying out all current grants, all grants under consideration that we normally would have made, and any new grants that come in within the next three months that we normally would have said yes to (existing charities receiving Open Philanthropy money are particularly encouraged to apply), and providing six months for everyone currently at the non-profit before we shut down. I want to emphasize that this is not because of anything that Alexander Berger or the rest of the wonderful team at OpenPhil have done. They're great, and I think that they've tried as hard as anyone could to do the best possible work with our money. It's the rest of you. I present three primary motivations. They're all somewhat interrelated, but hopefully by presenting three arguments in succession you will update on each of them sequentially. Certainly I've lost all hope in y'all retaining any of the virtues of the rationalist community, rather than just their vices. I hope that this helps you as a community clean up your act while you try to convince someone else to fund this mess. Maybe Bernauld Arnault. That was a joke. Haha, fat chance. 1. In the words of philosopher Liam Kofi Bright, “Why can't you just be normal?” Two of Redwood's leadership team have or have had relationships to an [Open Philanthropy] grant maker. A Redwood board member is married to a different OP grantmaker. A co-CEO of OP is one of the other three board members of Redwood. Additionally, many OP staff work out of Constellation, the office that Redwood runs. OP pays Redwood for use of the space. Just be normal. Stop having a social community where people live and work and study and sing together, and do social atomization like everybody else. This won't cause any problems. Everyone else is doing it. There is another way! You don't, actually, need to have more partners than the average American adult has friends. Also, just don't have sex. That's not that much to ask for, is it? I've been married for a decade now: I can tell you, it's perfectly possible. 2. I'm tired of all the criticism. I'm tired of it hitting Asana, which I still love and care about. Moving my donations to instead buying superyachts, artwork, and expanding on an actually fun hobby (giant bonsai) is going to substantially reduce how often my family, friends, and employees sees me getting attacked in one news outlet or another. 3. Pick a cause and stick with it. Have the courage of your convictions. I don't need to spend my time hearing about sea-rats and prisoners and suffering matrices and matrices that are suffering and discount rates and so many different ways human bodies can go wrong in other countries and immigration and housing for techies and so many more. Y'all were supposed to be optimizers, so this donating splitting between different cause areas should end. Like I said, most of my wealth is going into the new super-yacht my wife and I will be commissioning. Maybe then you could stop arguing quite so much. Get it all out of your systems, figure out what the best charity is, and stick with it. Average American adult has three or fewer friends. Thanks for listening. In real estate investing, the reality is that passive income is far from passive. It takes hard work to get the right deals and find the right people to do the job. You also have to have the mental acuity to negotiate deals and handle potential setbacks. But there are things you can do to make it better and more efficient for you. In today's conversation, Jonathan chats with Dusten Hendrickson, founder of Mailbox Money and a real estate syndicator. Dusten shares valuable insights into real estate investing, especially, the importance of designing and building well-designed properties and the idea of encouraging your contractors to put some money into equity. A seasoned investor, Dusten has been in the real estate world since 2003, house-hacking at a time when house-hacking wasn't even a term yet. He went from being a roofing contractor when he started to now vertically integrating everything from development and construction to asset management and syndications. WTF Just Happened?!: Afterlife Evidence, Paranormal + Spirituality without the Woo
Psychic Medium Dusten Lyvers is a highly evidential psychic medium who is certified by the Forever Family Foundation. He is also a licensed counselor and on a fun note, is a ballroom dance performer. In an Instagram Live talk (part 2) Psychic Medium Dusten Lyvers answers frequently asked questions from listeners. Why did my loved one not come through in a reading? Maybe it's the timing? Maybe the grief is too raw. Maybe the medium is not the right one to connect with the deceased loved one? Does Dusten get nervous before giving readings? He felt that more nervous early on, but now feels what he calls “positive stress” which is motivating. How long should someone wait between medium readings? Ideally Dusten asks people to wait six months if it is the same type of reading, such as two medium readings, but if someone wants a psychic reading and then a medium reading, there isn't a time limit. But you do need to be careful about getting too many readings. Dusten would never want anyone to become addicted or dependent on him. How did Dusten realize he was a psychic medium? Dusten explains that it does not happen all at once. It happened over time and he had a great mentor. Had Dusten ever even met a medium when he was a child? Did he know this was a career option? Dusten shares that his mom's side is Catholic, and his dad's side is nondenominational Christian. He was not raised in what people think of as a traditional Christian childhood. They really only celebrated holidays and said prayers once in awhile. And when it came to mediumship, that was never talked about or really thought about. His family does wonder where it came from. Dusten is also a therapist, How does being a therapist and being a medium tie in together? Dusten shares that the research as well as his personal opinion is that most mediums are into healing and are into psychology. It does help. It also helps him discuss difficult topics and help ease grief. And in a slightly “out there” question, does Dusten ever counsel spirits who have passed away? Dusten doesn't actually sit down and “invite spirits into his office for a session” but when he gives readings to people, at the end of the session the spirits give a little voice in his head where they thank him for the reading. Medium readings are helping the spirits heal too, not only the sitter who comes in for a medium reading. What was the most extremely evidential experience or “what the fuck” moment Dusten has ever seen or encountered? Dusten shares about a time he got an amazingly evidential reading. He talks about how all the feedback he has gotten from his clients verifying the information he has given is also very strong evidence of an afterlife. Being a psychic medium can Dusten read the thoughts and personal lives of his friends? Dusten doesn't give readings to friends and he is able to have boundaries so he is not inundated with psychic and mediumistic information. How can someone recognize a sign from a loved one who has passed? Dusten shares tips on how to get signs and ask for signs. He talks about the signs he has asked for (rainbows from his grandmother) and an interesting sign of ants from his grandfather. Do Dusten's loved one's who have passed away visit him? Yes, he feels them around but they do not come and visit. WTF Just Happened?!: Afterlife Evidence, Paranormal + Spirituality without the Woo
Do people who were cruel and abusive apologize for their actions after they die? What does it feel like to give a psychic medium reading? These are some of the questions Psychic Medium Dusten Lyvers answers in an IG Live talk with Liz of WTF Just Happened?!, as she continues her quest for afterlife evidence. How does Dusten handle it if he is giving a medium reading, and the person who comes in was abusive when they were alive? Does the person who came in for the reading even want to hear from this person? Dusten is also a therapist, so he is trained to deal with the sensitivity of this situation. Liz wonders if they automatically become more enlightened and regret the way they behaved and treated other people once they have passed away. This is not a topic with a simple answer. Each situation is really different. Liz talks about when she first met Dusten. She had a private medium reading with him and he read her in a group reading. She was really impressed. He got her dead dead's personality, described aspects of her family home in detail, and gave some information that Liz did not know, but her mom later verified. Dusten really got the personality of her dad and Liz wonders what does it feel like for a medium when they give a reading? Dusten explains how he feels the emotions of the person, how his senses are engaged and what that is like as a psychic medium. A listener wants to know, how long should someone wait after a loved one has passed away before they get a reading? In terms of when someone can come in and communicate with a psychic medium after they have passed away, there is no time frame. Dusten shares a time someone came to him the day after they died, giving really strong evidence and surprising both him and the sitter, the person who came to get the medium reading. However, in terms of healing grief, going to early might not always be healthy. Not everyone knows this, but there is a difference between psychic readings and medium readings. In fact there is a famous quote, "All mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums." Liz is surprised that Dusten does not like that quote. Also, she wonders how he can tell the difference between when he is reading someone psychically or as a medium. A listener asks how he can connect with a deceased person when he is giving phone or Zoom medium readings. Dusten explains how he can and how the deceased person will still come to him. Liz explains why she thinks phone readings are the most evidential kind of medium reading. Dusten closes by sharing how evidential the reading was that he gave when the spirit came to him the day after they passed away. Dusten Gratny, Animal Behaviorist, is a lifelong horseman, cattleman, and stock dog breeder and trainer who has steeped himself in his passions in a way very few implement. His way of being makes him extraordinary with animals. His creativity and tenacity have taken him down a spectrum of roads - from the excavating industry to a custom jeweler, trainer of Biblical horsemanship, and large animal veterinarian technician. His favorite aspect of the animals he's bred, trained, and competed with is the genetic strategy required for distinguished athleticism. He credits his ability to ebb, flex and flow to his family of origin. For nearly two decades, the family and their horses entertained audiences and ministered to event-goers as the only trick riding and roping family in America logging an average of 30 performances annually. He is grateful to be a steward of a ranch near Earlham and welcomes anyone interested in slowing down and building relationships.

I have rarely heard anyone talking about the concept where in order to attract money you must first give it away. This is the type of stuff you hear about from spiritual gurus like Wayne Dyer or in Wealth Consciousness courses. Props to you Dusten for living your life this way! https://mailboxmoneyre.com

There are several different ways to get started with real estate investing and it all depends on your vision, goals and availability. On this episode, Jake and Gino talk with Dusten Hendrickson. Dusten develops real estate, purchases existing value add real estate, and invests passively as an LP. He also helps others invest in the same deals he invests in. He owns and asset manages over 300 units and he passively invests in over 1000 units. Key takeaways from this episode: Revenue is vanity, profit margin is sanity and cash is king. Focus on ROE (Return on Effort), not just scaling up. Moreover to begin with passive real estate investing, consider syndication as it allows you to own real estate without management responsibilities and other related liabilities that are typically there to take care of in active real estate investing. Use social media to establish your credibility as an industry specialist and grow your network.
