The Phoenix Force and Other Drama This week on the Podcast, Brian and Darryl are back after an unexpected hiatus due to Brian’s Achilles Tendon surgery, and they are reviewing the second half of X-Men ’97 season 1! Episode Index Intro: 0:07 X-Men ’97: 4:02 X-Men ’97 (Disney+) Out 10 Are Charles and Magnus an Items Darryl: 9/10 Brian: 8.5/10 Season Summary X-Men ’97 begins with Cyclops uncovering a new anti-mutant technology, leading to a reunion with an old foe and the addition of a new team member. Magneto, now leading the X-Men due to Charles Xavier’s last will, faces trial for his past crimes, while anti-mutant rioters test his resolve. As the team confronts a visitor with a dangerous secret, Jubilee is transported into a 16-bit video game, reliving the X-Men’s greatest adventures. The season continues with Genosha preparing to join the UN, leading to political intrigue and media scrutiny for the X-Men. Storm faces her worst fears in a two-part storyline involving her relationship with Forge. Cyclops targets Bolivar Trask but discovers a deeper manipulation at play. The season culminates in a three-part epic where the X-Men must unite against a formidable new threat, challenging their unity and the dream of peaceful mutant-human coexistence Episode 6: “Lifedeath (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 17, 2024 Summary: During a war between the Shi’ar and Kree empires, Shi’ar empress Lilandra Neramani announces her engagement to a now-healed Xavier. Refusing to accept her sister marrying a Terran, Deathbird invokes the Rite of M’Dashaa and challenges Xavier to purge all his memories of Earth to prove his loyalty to the Shi’ar. Xavier’s refusal to renounce his memories of the X-Men results in a battle between the Shi’ar Imperial Guard and Deathbird’s supporters until Xavier pulls everyone into the astral plane to educate them on co-existence. When this lesson is interrupted by a psychic vision of Gambit’s death, Xavier returns to Earth. At the ranch, Forge uses his mother’s spell book to expel the demon and then Storm helps him search for a rare cactus that cures the poison. Storm finds the cactus in a cave but is again cornered by the Adversary. Overcoming her fears, Storm regains her powers and defeats the Adversary. Storm heals Forge, and then they learn about the attack on Genosha. Elsewhere, Trask is confronted by Mister Sinister who warns that Genosha was just the beginning. Episode 7: “Bright Eyes” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: April 24, 2024 Summary: As the X-Men hold a funeral for Gambit, Rogue angrily searches for Gyrich and Trask. After gaining information from General Thunderbolt Ross and Captain America, Rogue finds Gyrich in Mexico and absorbs his memories. Gyrich is murdered later that night. While assisting in the recovery efforts at Genosha, the X-Men are contacted by a terrified Trask who tells them that he is in Madripoor. They get Rogue on the way. Roberto and Jubilee visit Roberto’s mother and tell her that he is a mutant; she asks him to keep his identity a secret. In Madripoor, the X-Men learn that Sinister and the UN’s secret “OZT” division have been developing a highly advanced Sentinel program. Rogue drops Trask to his death, unknowingly activating programming that turns him into a human–Sentinel hybrid. Cable arrives, defeats Trask with an EMP, and explains that Sinister is working with a greater threat that they must stop. This threat, who murdered Gyrich, is Bastion. He reveals to Sinister that Xavier is alive in space and that Magneto, presumed dead in the Genosha attack, is also alive and is Bastion’s prisoner. Episode 8: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 1)” Directed by: Jake Castorena Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 1, 2024 Summary: Part 1 : The UN reveals to the world that Xavier is alive, inciting an anti-mutant protest outside the school. Cable explains to the X-Men that the Genosha massacre is an “absolute point” in time that cannot be changed, and Bastion will use it to start a 300-year war that will lead to the enslavement of mutants in a human utopia. Cyclops, Jean, and Cable travel to Harmony, Pennsylvania, where they learn that Bastion is a human–machine hybrid who was conceived after his father was infected with part of the advanced, time-traveling Sentinel Nimrod. Members of “Operation: Zero Tolerance” (OZT) express concern over the massacre and ask Dr. Cooper to monitor Bastion, who explains to her how he is turning humans into Prime Sentinels like Trask using Sinister’s techno-organic virus. Prime Sentinels activate around the globe, attack mutants, and burn down Xavier’s school. A horrified Cooper releases Magneto, who creates a world-wide blackout that kills thousands of people and shuts down all of the Prime Sentinels. Wolverine fears that Magneto has declared war as Xavier returns and summons the X-Men. Episode 9: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 2)” Directed by: Chase Conley Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 8, 2024 Summary: Part 2 : Xavier is met with some distrust, but the X-Men focus on stopping Bastion and convincing Magneto to reverse his blackout. Magneto re-establishes his mutant haven on Asteroid M, choosing to leave the Earth without power and rejecting Xavier’s dream of mutant/human co-existence. He invites the X-Men to join him, which Rogue and Roberto do. The rest of the X-Men return to their former base on Muir Island to regroup, before splitting into two teams: Cyclops’s Blue Team goes to Asteroid M to confront Magneto while Storm and Jean’s Gold Team heads to Bastion’s hideout in the Galápagos Islands. Beast and Forge create a collar that can block Bastion’s technopathy and sever his control over the Sentinels. The Gold Team battles an army of Bastion-controlled Sentinels and Sinister, who takes control of Cable’s mind and uses him to overpower Jean; she sends a desperate psychic message to Cyclops. On Asteroid M, Xavier attempts to take control of Magneto’s mind but is blocked. Wolverine stabs and seriously injures Magneto who begins ripping the adamantium metal from Wolverine’s skeleton. Episode 10: “Tolerance is Extinction (Part 3)” Directed by: Emi Yonemura Written by: Beau DeMayo Release Date: May 15, 2024 Summary: Part 3 : With Wolverine critically injured, Xavier takes control of Magneto and restores power to Earth, fracturing Magneto’s mind. Jean—connecting to the cosmic power of the Phoenix—places the collar on Bastion, restoring the Prime Sentinels’ humanity, and reverses Sinister’s mutant augmentations which frees Cable. The X-Men fight to prevent Bastion from crashing Asteroid M into Earth and causing a new extinction event. Still, it plummets after the U.S. government launches missiles at the asteroid hoping to destroy it. With Xavier’s help, Magneto regains consciousness and sends the asteroid into space. It explodes and most of the X-Men are presumed dead. Six months later, Bishop arrives and tells Forge that the X-Men are trapped in time: Cyclops and Jean are in 3960 A.D., a desolate future where they encounter Mother Askani and a young Nathan; and Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, Xavier, and Magneto are in Ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C. where they meet En Sabah Nur, a young version of Apocalypse. In a mid-credits scene, Apocalypse finds one of Gambit’s playing cards in present-day Genosha. X-Men '97 is executive produced by Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and Beau DeMayo. The series features music by the Newton Brothers. Things get downright evil as we delve into Nathaniel Essex, aka MISTER SINISTER! How messy does this diva get? Listen now to find out! Issue 181 - Mister Sinister Intro Background (2:17) Mister Sinister (Nathaniel Essex) created by Chris Claremont in Uncanny X-Men #212 (Dec. 1986) - first seen in #221 (Sept. 1987) drawn by Marc Silvestri Nathaniel Essex born in Victorian London, he is intrigued by Darwin's theories of evolution and survival of the fittest, but believes that mankind can go further After his 4-year-old son dies, he believes that science can perfect the human race - to that end, he hires a gang to kidnap homeless people to serve as test subjects - he allies with Apocalypse, as they share a common goal His wife discovers his imprisoned test subjects, as well as their dead son that Essex had dug up to experiment on - she goes into premature birth, and dies from blood loss, calling him sinister - he takes on the name after En Sabah Nur transforms him with Celestial technology, giving him the powers of immortality and telekinesis Sinister tries to kill Apocalypse, but fails - he commits himself to creating a mutant who can kill him, this leads to the eventual creation of Cable Sinister collaborates with many villains & characters throughout the decades, including being responsible for setting up the High Evolutionary, and having his research be the basis for Weapon X project He keys in on the Summers line, after secretly establishing an orphanage to keep track of children of his experiments - it is here he meets a young boy named Scott Summers, descendant of one of his earliest subjects - Sinister pretends to be Nate, another orphan, and tries to manipulate Scott to become an ally to Sinister until Scott is rescued by Xavier Creates a clone of Jean Grey after determining that a child of Scott and Jean would be capable of killing Apocalypse - after the Phoenix Saga, Scott meets Madelyne Pryor at a Summers family reunion, leading to a whole bunch of messiness Encounters the X-men for the first time during Mutant Massacre Dies during Messiah Complex when he attempts to kidnap the newborn baby Hope - due to earlier experimentations, his consciousness transfers first to Xavier, before transferring to Claudine Renko, a former test subject - she calls herself Miss Sinister Later is restored to a male form and creates an entire civilization of Sinister clones in San Francisco in an attempt to get Celestials to wipe out the planet so he can start anew - this is Kieron Gillen's reboot of the character, and all subsequent stories work off this version Creates five Madelyne clones in an effort to house the Phoenix Force during AvX, but the Phoenix Five destroy everything Sinister built This Sinister is killed by another clone with an X-gene, making Sinister a mutant - it is this clone that works with Xavier and Magneto to compile a database of mutant DNA for the new Krakoan society, and he joins the Quiet Council He also creates several clones of Moira MacTaggert, and exploits her timeline reset ability to his benefit, which leads to Sins of Sinister, where he successfully kills Xavier, Hope, Emma Frost, and Exodus, creating a dystopian future for mutants and mankind Issues - Theme is “The show must go on, but when does it stop?” (12:10) Constant experimentation on others and himself in pursuit of perfection Presentation and theatricality often doom his efforts (17:06) Wants everyone to underestimate him, but overestimates himself (22:14) Break (28:10) Plugs for Frigay the 13th, Hops Geek, and Chris Claremont Treatment (30:20) In-universe - The ultimate family meeting Out of universe - Review making changes just for changes sake Skit (42:40) Hello Mr. Sinister, I'm Dr. Issues. - Hello…Doctor…you know, that doesn't quite fit what we should be going for, here. I don't follow. -While I prefer my choice of moniker, I don't want any mistake in how this works. I am also a doctor. But that's not ALL I am, at this point. Do you catch my drift? So we're colleagues, and I have every intention of giving you the respect you deserve. -Oh, but that's where you're wrong. Colleague denotes equals, peers. There is no such thing with me. Are you trying to intimidate me, or…-*interrupting* Oh my, no! If I wanted to have you cowering in fear, I would simply tear your mind asunder. Then replace it backwards. No, this is all trivial to me. But I'm bored, so let's see where this goes now that I've established dominance. I don't think I've been so eloquently insulted in all of my life! -You're welcome. *clearly angry, but not stupid enough to act* I don't want to be rude back, but if you have no interest in changing anything about yourself, then this is going to be fruitless. -Nonsense, dear doctor. I am all about change for the better. That's why I'm here. I sought you out. That's refreshing…I guess? Then why demean me? -Is it demeaning to say that an insect is expendable, or a seed only has value once planted? You sound like someone I met once -I know…I learned from the best. So what do you want to change? -*truly evil smile* YOU, my dear Doctor Issues *gulp* I'm always looking to improve…but…um…that's not how therapy works. -Do you doubt that the transference and countertransference phenomenon that were known when I was a much younger lad are true? EVERY therapist changes the moment they speak with a patient. But that is too slow. I need to see my results in real time. *fearful* A..aaaaa…as a doctor, you know that consent is a VERY important part of any changes that would be proposed, and I don't give you that -*curt* This is NOT a review board or ethics panel. What I say, goes. Understand?! Is it too late to say that you're falling back on past patterns of aggression for the sake of comfort in a new environment? -If this were truly a new environment, then you wouldn't be in such dire straits right now. Oh, the torment you may feel for a short while will be well worth my efforts. I will admit though *whispering* I'm not gentle. I would like the anger back, please. Creepy is much worse. -Who said anything about creepy? I'm not hidden about my intentions. My name says enough. Perhaps I could interest you in the meaning behind that also referring to left-handed orientation? -More stalling. *yawn* You are coming off as pathetic now. So, you're not trying to scare me, you're not interested in what I have to say, and you want to...do SOMETHING and I don't know what. Are you trying to build anticipation? I'm confused. -Perhaps ***awkward pause*** OK I've had it. Just do it. Kill me, or torture me, or whatever it is you plan to do because it takes a lot for me to lose my patience nowadays. Just know that each time I try to start a conversation that may be insightful…THERAPEUTIC even, you have ignored it, or mocked it, or intimidated me about it. You're trying to play me like a fool, and I'm NOT having it. I can tell you're cunning, but nobody's really that catty about mental wellness treatment. -Well then, let's see how well your sessions go without this oh so beautiful couch to sit on. *ripping sounds* WHAT? Seriously? It's in the name! Who messes up a couch? -You need someone like me to make this whole room over. Your office is in shambles. Have you never heard of feng shui? I don't care -*interrupting* Obviously you don't. And your clothes…a button down shirt with stripes? How tacky are you? Is this what you consider changing me for the better? A mastermind doesn't waste their time focusing on minutiae to criticize! - You think this is beneath me? Forget about Lizzo, darling, I engineered my DNA to be 100% that bitch. So then what are your plans for my DNA? -Oh you simple, simple man. You have to learn how to put a comb through your hair, get a decent suit, learn how to tie your shoes properly AND find a decent non-offensive cologne before I ever do gene-work on you! For once, I must focus on the outside instead of what's inside. I'll be here every week until you are worthy of being my next great experiment. Then I'll keep trying to be an example of a regular person who is willing to accept imperfections. I hope that sinks in. -Nonsense. Until then, consider this my parting gift *laser sound* Whoa…did you just…laser shave…um…but my clothes are still on…you know what? I don't want to talk about it. That was without my consent. - You're quite welcome. This time it was hair. Next time, it will be more than that if you're not careful. Jace takes a look at Apocalypse and the X-Tracts #2. While the followers of En Sabah Nur seem to be buying his act, Jace sure isn't. He speculates the Apocalypse still has the desire for power at hsi core. All the talk of love and community is just that, talk. Once he has found a way for all mutants to throw off the influence of X-Man he will be there to pick up the pieces and enslave the population all over again, this time in service to him.

Bryan Singer continues his retelling of the X-Men universe by going WAAAAAAAAAAY back to ancient Egypt and resurrecting some blue dude! This movies definitely has shades of Stargate (1994) and The Mummy (1999) with a sprinkle of History Channel's Ancient Aliens thrown in ;-) Matt kinda liked it while Byron was the more typical viewer giving it a decidedly low rating. Enjoy!Directed By: Bryan Singer Budget: $178 MMUSA Gross: $155 MMWW Gross: $543 MMTomatometer: 47%Wolverine: 58First class: 87Xmen1: 81Xmen2: 85Xmen3: 57The wolverine: 71Days of future past: 91Apocalypse: 47Dark pheonix: 23Logan: 93IMDb Plot Summary: In the 1980s the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive through bringing destruction to the world. Random trivia: Although not in the movie, Sir Patrick Stewart jokingly informed Bryan Singer that he would be willing to play Mystique, should Jennifer Lawrence "start playing up." He said: "I am so ready to be naked, painted blue, and the world is ready for it too."

Siniestr. A recap/review of X-Men: Apocalypse, the ninth movie set in the X-Men Movie Universe. We start in on the News Bits at 7:00 and get back to X-Men talk at 39:00.
X-Men: Apocalypse begins in 3600 BC, as En Sabah Nur (Apocalypse, as we come to know him) is attempting to move his consciousness and powers to a new body, one that possesses the power of rapid healing, so that it can be added to his collection of abilities. While this happens he is to be protected by his four greatest warriors who unfortunately fail, but not before the transition is complete just as the ceremony chamber collapses into the earth. After a few thousand years, stupid men dig him up and unleash upon Earth...well, the Apocalypse. One which only our beloved gaggle of X-Men can help avert. This special episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast is dedicated to Bryan Singer's fourth and latest go-round at mutant history as he takes on his most challenging film and foe yet. Where does it end up in the lexicon of Marvel's X-Men films? Did it deserve the critical lashing many have given it? Is Apocalypse everything it could have been? We discuss this film in detail, both spoiler-free and aplenty, so don't miss our X-Men: Apocalypse Reactions Podcast. After Saving the World from the Bad Robots. one think that their is peace between Humans and Mutant but En Sabah Nur is back and […]
This entry in the retro X-Men series finds the mutants in the series-alternate universe year of 1983, ten years after the events of Days of Future Past, where the cold war is rampant between the United States and the Soviet Union, with most people already worried about being on the brink of annihilation of life on Earth within just a few hours if nuclear war should ever break out. Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto, is living as a closeted mutant to keep his family safe, working as a metal worker in Poland with a loving wife and daughter. Professor Charles Xavier is at the mansion that serves as the School for Gifted Youngsters (aka, mutants confronting who they are and learning to control their powers). Both have their home worlds rocked in tragedy. And Mystique spends her time traveling to the four corners of the Earth in order to liberate mutants wherever she can, such as the German teleporter, Nightcrawler. The mutants begin to fight amongst each other yet again when the world's first mutant, the powers-absorbing En Sabah Nur, aka Apocalypse, is resurrected from his dormant state since 3600 B.C., wastes no time in hatching a plan to lay conquest to the entire planet. He sets about pulling together powerful mutant accomplices, dubbed his Four Horsemen, in an effort to bring humanity under their rule, after threatening them with nuclear annihilation. Now it's up to Xavier, Mystique, Beast, and a band of untested gifted students to fight for the right of people who want their kind destroyed from being crushed under the rule of these mad mutants.
Born 5,000 years ago as probably the first mutant, En Sabah Nur would become obsessed with the concept "survival of the fittest". Later known as the powerful, evil mutant Apocalypse, he would assemble his Four Horseman and try to eliminate the weak of the world, believing only the strong should survive. This episode should give you all the background you need for the title character of X-Men: Apocalypse. Thanks Kirby Krackle for the theme music! In Episode 101 of CEREBRO, the SEASON 4 PREMIERE, Connor and Head of X emeritus Jonathan Hickman extend a cautious hand to En Sabah Nur, the atrocious Apocalypse! Created by Louise Simonson, Walt Simonson, and Butch Guice as the central antagonist of 1986's X-Factor, the ancient immortal Apocalypse spent millennia worshiped by many names, secretly cultivating the mutant race. After decades of publication in which the heroes fought his seemingly inevitable ascent to power — particularly when he took on the role of franchise big bad in the 90s — the Krakoan Age changed everything, with the character revolutionized by Hickman and his collaborator Tini Howard. The CEREBRO character file on Apocalypse begins at 54:56.(Content Advisory: Apocalypse's story includes slavery, genocide, suicide, torture, brainwashing, and involuntary body modification.)You can support CEREBRO on Patreon! Our Sponsors:* Check out Drizly: https://drizly.com* Check out Factor and use my code cerebro50 for a great deal: https://www.factormeals.com/cerebro50Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
