Confessions of a Bikini Pro

In this week's episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk welcomes IFBB Pro, holistic nutrition expert, and Puerto Rican bombshell Mia Sanchez.  After finding her passion in bodybuilding, she quickly rose to the ranks by winning her pro card at Universe in 2016. In addition to her love for fitness, Mia has her bachelors in Communication Studies, is an excellent writer, painter, and a great advocate for mental health in the IFBB division. Celeste and Mia begin the episode by discussing Mia’s journey into fitness. Mia explains how she was an overweight child and was made aware of her food choices since age 13. After removing red meat from her diet, Mia began to feel confident in her new shape which gave her the courage to start a fitness journey. Mia states that bodybuilding opened her eyes to everything she can achieve aesthetically. Celeste asks Mia about her journey into bodybuilding. States she found an advertisement in a magazine several years ago. Mia states she was initially laughed at by her peers, however she persisted and grew her passion and fell in love with the bodybuilding atmosphere. This passion grew even more after placing well at her first show. Mia’s current goal is to be invited to the Arnold Classic or be qualified for the Olympia. Mia openly discusses with Celeste about feeling exhausted during prep. She has learned to “embrace the suck” while keeping focused on beating her best package. Mia tells viewers to appreciate the outcomes, follow the plan, and be proud of the journey. Mia explains her post operation breast augmentation complications. She states she has had to have several reconstructive breast surgeries throughout the years. Mia started her social media accounts the morning after her breast augmentation for other competitors to follow her recovery. She admits to feeling pressured to have a social presence after winning her Pro Card and felt as if she had to share her whole life to the fitness world. Over the years, Mia let go of the pressure to be an influencer and focus on impressing the judges instead. In addition to bodybuilding, Mia’s true passion is writing, painting, and being surrounded by loved ones. Mia opens up about her coach, grandmother, and dog passing away last year. She explains to Celeste the began to doubt her presence in the IFBB professional stage and worry about hiring a new coach. Mia made the choice to take time off, visit family in Puerto Rico, travel across the United States, and prioritize her mental health by seeing a holistic psychologist. Mia admits to not knowing the feeling of “being off a diet” before taking time off and believes her diet break helped her achieve an amazing package. For her next competition prep, Mia explains to Celeste how she will be putting primary focus on her recovery. She loves the process of getting ready for stage, but admits she needs to also love the recovery part. Mia is excited to get massages, take a few days off from cardio, practicing yoga, and laying on the couch. In addition to physical rest, she will be keeping her journaling, story writing, and painting as a priority. During her coaching, she encourages quiet time and advocates for her clients to prioritize her Mental Health. She recommends her clients have five obtainable, positive, and simple goals to reflect on each week, especially for her lifestyle team members. Intrinsic motivation, confidence, and discipline is hard to teach, and recommends coaches to be slow on their approach. Not focusing on her negatives and acknowledging her fears. Mia and Celeste end the episode by giving her best advice to women who are new to competing. Mia’s interesting journey to fitness, nearly 5 year history in the IFBB division, and unique perspective on recovery makes an episode you do not want to miss! In episode two of the Returning Guest series, host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down for a second time with Crisis Counselor, Master student of gerontology, Registered Yoga Teacher and Certified Personal Trainer, Kate Abate to dig deeper into Kate’s life outside of competing. Although she is not actively competing, Kate shares how she has continued to make her body a priority. As discussed on her previous episode, Kate has struggled with her gut health and talks about her continued journey to improve her digestion. She shares about the Autoimmune diet she has been following and it’s impact on her overall gut health and colitis. Beyond that, Kate discusses her own hypermobility and the levels it can work at outside of simply “being flexible”. She shares how the hypermobility works its way down to her internal organs and joints and the correlation that exists between her hypermobility and her physical and mental health. Kate studies gerontology which is the study of the aging process. Kate talks about the aging process as growth and development. She talks about how even though the body no longer grows taller, it grows and develops in many other fascinating ways. She specifically talks about mental health in the older population by asking the question, “Have you ever seen an 80 year old freaking out and stressed about something?” Because she is receiving this new degree, Kate talks about how she wants to expand her business once she receives her diploma. Just like getting this degree is allowing her to “pivot” in her own life, Kate wants to be able to reach those who  have also reached a pivot point in their life, whether it be in fitness, lifestyle, wellbeing or even a financial pivot. Even through all of this future planning, Kate shares how she is able to bring herself back to the present moment and enjoy every day. As the episode progresses, Kate talks about how she began her career in crisis counseling, stemming from trauma she experienced in her own childhood and in her 20s. She talks about how she was able to heal from this trauma and how she used a difficult time in her life to launch her into the world that is crisis counseling. Kate shares some of the best things that have come to her personally from crisis counseling and how to speak out when feeling the shame that is accompanied by the violence of a sexual assault. In this powerful episode, Kate’s words inspire hope and optimism for the aging process, healing through trauma and sexual assault. Confessions of a Bikini Pro

In this week’s episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk has the pleasure of interviewing IFBB Pro Shenese Case. Known for her killer glutes and high energy, Shenese has a passion for fitness and helping women achieve their goals. In addition to being a fitness coach, this Canadian bombshell is in prep for her Pro debut after winning her pro card at Vancouver Pro in 2019. Shenese begins by acknowledging how hard she is working to achieve a better stage presence for her Pro Debut in September. She gives credit to Beyonce to obtain a more sassy and energetic stage presence. Shenese also mentions the importance of hiring a coach during this time to have “another set of eyes”. Her coach focuses on every detail from “hair to toenails”. Her coach emphasizes a good posing routine to show off her physique and how making posing a daily routine will help the stage become second-nature. Celeste and Shenese speak about how she was able to self-coach to the national level Shenese explains how she was afraid to train upper body before hiring a coach because of the misconceptions of being too manly with big biceps and shoulders. She has also decreased lower body focused strength training such as quads/calves and increased upper body days to obtain the perfect balance of muscle.  For her pro debut, Shenese has now focused on bringing down her mid-section, facial expressions, and overall conditioning. During her off season, Shenese did not over indulge and enjoyed occasional cheat meals to keep her waist line down and manageable. Celeste and Shenese agree that there is more to life than “chicken, rice, and broccoli”. Shenese now uses this approach while she coaches other women about meal timing, macros, and practicing moderation and portion sizes.  Celeste and Shenese also discuss the “why” of competing. Shenese reminisces about the insecure girl she used to be and how fitness gave her the confidence she always wanted. Shenese encourages viewers to support other women in the beginning of their fitness journeys. Celeste and Shenese believe that competing gave them the inner strength and discipline to have a sense of purpose in life.  Finally, Shenese gives credit to her daily rituals. She begins the day by meditating 10 minutes journaling, lighting a candle, and setting intentions for the day. Shenese never wants to be remembered as “the moody person” during prep and wants to represent sport in the best light. She states, “When you love what you do, it should be full of happiness.” She has leaned on her friends and family during stressful times to include losing her Dad and going through a breakup during competition prep. Shenese is a wonderful representation for the IFBB and has an undeniable energy! In today’s episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk, speaks with Jessica Perez-Beebe, an IFBB Pro who faced adversity growing up, yet found how to live a healthy abundant life after finding personal development and self improvement and who now uses her athlete mentality in her own business to mentor entrepreneurs and leaders. As always, Celeste kicks off the episode by having Jessica share her pre-stage ritual with listeners. From there, Celeste and Jessica quickly recap Jessica’s competing history during which she goes on to share how her experience coaching herself into nationals was what she considered “a disaster.” First, however, Jessica explains how she originally got into bodybuilding after previously being active in the CrossFit community, as well as owning her own strength & conditioning gym, yet was looking for another goal to help her stay focused while also trying to grow her business. To Jessica’s surprise, she placed in the top 5 at her first national show yet at the time she hadn’t even considered the thought of becoming a pro in the sport. After leaving her coach at the time due to plans of moving abroad with her husband, Jessica decided last minute to compete at USA’s self-coached, which was where she discovered the necessity to have a coach despite her years of knowledge and education in the industry, emphasizing that “you don’t know what you don’t know.” Next, Celeste asks Jessica about her decision to move overseas, which ultimately led to her 3.5 year break from competing. Jessica explains that her and her husband had a shared vision of being location independent, traveling for months or years at a time, renting houses here and there, all while being able to manage their businesses or work remotely. Jessica shares that her and her husband ended up becoming overnight parents to her niece Lily, yet despite her coming into their lives they went ahead with their plans to move. Jessica sold her business sooner than originally planned and they decided to bring Lily with them and gift her the experience of travel from a young age. Jessica confirms that her decision to take Lily along was the right one, as Lily was able to grow up in an environment with parents who set positive examples and displayed what a well rounded and fulfilling life can entail. Celeste then asks Jessica how the living abroad and being a nomad affected her commitments to health and fitness, to which Jessica explains that her experiences were different from a typical vacation as it was an opportunity to immerse herself in various cultures, learn new customs and ways of living, as well as constantly having to adapt. Celeste then has Jessica elaborate on the role nutrition and fitness took during Jessica’s time in other countries. After discussing Jessica’s time abroad and what sparked that decision, Celeste asks about Jessica’s role as a performance coach. Celeste asks how Jessica has taken her experiences of travel and being a professional athlete to work with her clients on mindset and how to live more fulfilling lives. Jessica emphasizes the importance of focus and commitment and how that translates from bodybuilding to business. She teaches her clients about removing the distractions to focus on one thing at a time, and how that translates for one to be successful in business. Jessica explains that even the most successful entrepreneurs start their day off with fitness, to which she shares that she loves working with athletes in particular, knowing that they already have instilled life habits of dedication and focus. Celeste then transitions the conversation to Jessica’s daily habits and has her share with listeners her daily non negotiable’s. Jessica shares how the to-do lists are something she no longer uses, yet implements a practice of writing down two important things that must be accomplished the next day. This opens a discussion between Celeste and Jessica about the concept of the to-do list and Jessica shares what she feels is necessary for athletes or entrepreneurs to do to “level up” and go from amateur to pro. She shares how she feels that the smaller habitual things on the to do list distract from the bigger, more important tasks that will really take one to the next level. The two women discuss their opinions on how to best set yourself up to win the day while setting intentions and how to focus those actions and intentions to help accomplish the big vision or goal. Switching gears, Celeste asks Jessica about her beginnings in the world of personal development and how she realized that things like the law of attraction and inner work could help her lead a more abundant life. Jessica talks about how from a young age she was always curious and how she found ways to detach from the violent and fearful environment she grew up in to seek out how to better her life. She shares that from a young age she knew she was meant for more and how that desire and skill carried over into her adult life and competing career, trusting that she could create what she focused on. Branching off of Jessica’s beginnings in truly achieving what she focuses on, Celeste asks Jessica about finances and how she manages her mindset around money in terms of budgeting for competitions, as well as how she works with clients about their mindset with money as well. Celeste moves on to ask Jessica about the sudden passing of her mom and how that affected her life decisions moving forward. Jessica recounts the story of how she found out about her moms passing after coming home from an out-of-town event for a job she didn’t enjoy working under a verbally abusive manager, where she felt like she wasn’t harnessing her true potential, and how she took this as a sign to fearlessly pursue the life she had dreamt for herself. Jessica found the lesson in a tragic event, shifted her mindset and used that to propel her forward. Jessica then talks about her plans for her pro debut and how injuries and show cancellations forced her to modify the original plan, yet that she never saw quitting as an option. Her and Celeste walk through the various challenges she faced before stepping on stage at the NorCal show, yet Jessica emphasizes the importance of finishing through with goals she sets for herself. Jessica looks at her perseverance as something she has trained herself for, to “go all the way.” Although not showing up with her best physique to date, Jessica was still proud of the fact that she followed through with the plan to step on that stage having overcome so many obstacles. Next, Celeste asks Jessica about her plan of action moving forward for her 2020 season, now already having one show under her belt. Jessica explains her reasoning behind switching teams and coaching and why she had to make a tough decision in order to level up and shares what her and her new coach Damian, from The Pros, have planned for the rest of this year. The women quickly touch on the importance of divine timing and trusting that goals will come to fruition when they are meant to be. While talking about the concept of time and patience, Jessica emphasizes why “the juice is in the journey” not just in competing but in business as well. Jessica shares that although winning an award or medal is gratifying, the real reward is in the process and journey along the way. Celeste and Jessica then emphasize the importance of habits and consistency and how that helps not just in bodybuilding but in many other aspects of life, business included. The women then make more connections between bodybuilding and “real life” when they touch on the concept of how one’s imperfections can lead to longevity as it pushes them to constantly strive for improvement. By emphasizing consistency one can omit what can feel like inevitable ebbs and flows since habits will take over and create that certain behaviors become natural. After talking all things consistency and discipline, Celeste asks Jessica to give her best advice for both the first time competitor and for the girls on their road to pro. Confessions of a Bikini Pro

In this episode Celeste speaks with Suzanne Fargo, an athlete who has overcome major adversities through her two regional and two nationals shows to achieve the success she has today and who is a true representation that age is not a limiting factor in the sport of bodybuilding.  As always, Celeste kicks off the episode by asking Suzanne about her pre-stage ritual. Next, Suzanne goes on to describe her experiences at her national show, where the morning of her competition did not go as expected. With the make up artist running late and a mix up of when her class was being called, Suzanne explains the anxiety she felt as she rushed to get ready, only to find out that she was ready early as the Pro class for her age group was being called instead of the amateurs. From there, Celeste asks Suzanne to recount her experiences and journey to that national stage, including the show where the two women were able to meet in person, Gold Coast Classic, which was Suzanne’s first show. Suzanne shares what her feedback was from the judges and what she worked on to improve her physique for the national stage.  Before diving into the challenges and obstacles Suzanne has dealt with throughout her journey, Celeste asks Suzanne what inspired her to get into the gym to start lifting. Suzanne shares that she was diagnosed in December 2016 with Osteopenia, early osteoporosis, meaning that she had weak bones, which was a condition she was unaware of having. She explains that for four years before her diagnosis she experienced various broken bones, which led her to get a bone density scan.  Suzanne’s doctor recommended she start weight resistance training to prevent more serious problems in the following years and she found out that her Osteopenia was genetic given that was not deficient in Vitamin D or Calcium.  Being that she is half Taiwanese, Suzanne also learned that both osteopenia and osteoporosis are common conditions throughout the Asian community. With her doctors advice in mind, Suzanne sought out a trainer at a local gym and after a few months she really began to see her body change. It was then that her trainer at the time suggested she try prepping for a bikini competition. Celeste asks Suzanne about if she ever had any pain in her bones when she began lifting weights, as it was something her body was not used to and had broken so many bones in the past.  Next, Celeste opens the conversation to the topic of age. Celeste asks Suzanne to share her thoughts on getting into competing at her age and if she ever felt she was too old, which leads to Suzanne revealing her age. Suzanne shares that she has never felt that her age has been something to hold her back from going after her goals. Celeste asks Suzanne if she knew she would want to turn pro after her first experience on stage. Suzanne reflects on her experiences as a collegiate athlete and states that she knew that if she wanted to reach the next level she would have to reign in the necessary discipline and mentality to do so. Since Suzanne first started training in the gym and getting into competing she has had the opportunity to work with more than one coach. Celeste has Suzanne share the different approaches and techniques each coach has taken, how her preps have differed, and if Suzanne prefers one particular training method or style over another. Suzanne notes that each coach has served a particular purpose in her journey and talks about if she had any doubts or fears while transitioning between coaches. She then shares how she likes working with her current coach, Shane, and what she likes most about working with him.  Celeste asks about the influence Shane’s belief in Suzanne and her abilities has had on her journey to achieving her pro card. Suzanne shares that her coach never once doubted her potential to go pro and the importance of strategic planning they discussed when it came to competing at the national level. Celeste has Suzanne share her favorite part of her road to pro between the experiences with her different coaches, the methods she personally liked most, and what she’s learned along the way.  Suzanne talks about Shane’s “old school bodybuilding” approach when it comes to training, using the same workout plan over years yet progressing in each individual movement. From there, the two women further discuss that strategy and its benefits instead of constantly switching up ones workout routine.  After discussing training Celeste and Suzanne talk nutrition. Suzanne explains her reasoning behind eating a pure plant based diet for a portion of the week along with her meat based meals. The two women talk about their favorite preferred animal proteins yet that they can appreciate and enjoy fully plant based meals from time to time. Celeste discusses the psychology between positive and negative reinforcement with behaviors and how that translates to nutrition and bodybuilding and seeing the physical results one desires. They then discuss the difference between actual cravings and perceived cravings and the perceived norms associated with post show treats. Switching gears, Celeste asks Suzanne about her career prior to competing. Suzanne dives into her 25-year career in retail fashion and how she fell into that industry after majoring in Sociology, a degree she decided on after not feeling called study subjects she did not enjoy, such as math. She shares that now she would love to become more involved in the health and fitness industry and focus on working with women over 40, encouraging them to believe in themselves and break the belief that age is a limiting factor on ones goals.  Next, Celeste asks Suzanne to share some of the setbacks and obstacles she experienced throughout her competing career. Suzanne shares that her first national show experience was delayed because of a surgery her doctor refused to let her put off after fighting through a hernia to step on stage at her two regional shows. Suzanne walks us through her journey of fighting through various injuries and sicknesses while doing everything in her power to step on those national stages and achieve her pro card. Suzanne shares the impact her coach had while she was going through these tough times and how, no matter what, he encouraged her “not to let anyone beat her” and to push through the struggles. While on the topic of all things competing, Celeste asks Suzanne about her plans to step on stage for her pro debut, which leads Suzanne to share her plans and setbacks she is currently working through. Concluding the episode, Suzanne shares her best advice for new competitors and girls on their road to pro.   Connect with Suzanne:  https://www.instagram.com/suzannefargo_ifbbpro/ Connect with Celeste: https://www.instagram.com/celestial_fit/ Episode Time Stamps: [1:40] Suzanne shares her pre-stage ritual with listeners.  [3:00] Celeste asks Suzanne about the morning of her national show and what happened that made it such a crazy experience. In this week’s episode IFBB Bikini Pro, wife and online coach Caroline Ofenstein talks with host Celeste Rains-Turk about her journey not only to her pro card but to the best version of herself. After winning her pro status after just two shows, one of which was international in Columbia, Caroline shares her story of struggling with her relationship with food. In a powerful turn of events, Caroline talks about the thought process that led to hiring Celeste as a mindset coach and the food freedom she found while working with Celeste. Caroline stresses the importance of slowing down, journaling and being as real as possible on her journey towards overcoming a negative food relationship.   After making the difficult decision to switch coaches, Caroline talks about the self-advocacy she developed in her own prep. She shares how important it was for her to tell her new coach exactly what she needed and why she needed it, such as explaining why a certain change was made to her plan.   Through this process and through obtaining her Precision Nutrition certification, Caroline shares the importance of periodizing her nutrition throughout the year to account for not only a prep, but the necessary improvement season that comes with it. She talks about how she really focuses her attention on her relationship with her friends, family and husband in the improvement season and how it helps when prep comes along and energy levels may not be what they once were.   Another tactic Caroline stresses the importance of is visualization throughout the whole process. Caroline shares how she visualized the entire day she won her pro card the night before from simple things like where she would put her things to the big picture, like receiving her trophy. She shares the knowledge that the body doesn’t know the difference between what is existing in the mind and what is happening outside and how that visualization helped her to manifest her pro card victory.   Caroline shares about the little habits that she does every day, whether she is in prep or not, that help her mindset in the sport. Habits such as meditation and journaling in the morning, taking an early bed time and staying off social media in the morning have helped her to come into the best version of herself. She passionately discusses the importance of “turning off” work at a certain time of the day to separate her “work from home” life from her home life. She talks about how she doesn’t feel weighed down with work at the end of the night and the importance of remembering that there will always be “just one more thing” to do before bed, most of which are fine to wait until the next day. Unlike a lot of competitors, Caroline shares how she and her husband are polar opposites when it comes to fitness. As described by Caroline, her husband has “naturally lean physique and an active job”, so fitness was never a big priority for him. When she made the decision to compete in a show, Caroline talks about how she sought her husband input on the decision. She shares how she sat him down to talk about the reality of prep and what he could expect when she got closer to her show.   As the episode concludes, Caroline shares some of her favorite exercises that targets the glutes, hamstrings and shoulders, and follows that with advice for the newbie competitor and one who is on the road to pro.  In this insightful and not too “hippie” episode, Caroline shares a mountain of helpful tips for the competitor at any stage in her journey to the stage. In this episode Celeste talks with Liz Yisrael, a 3x Bikini Pro Champion who has competed on both the Arnold and Olympia stages, a mother, an army veteran, and a current logistics senior manager who has her Master’s Degree from West Point. Celeste starts off the episode by having Liz share with listeners her pre stage ritual. From there, Celeste first asks Liz about her history in the military and what inspired her to join the army originally. Liz shares that she not only wanted to serve the country but saw the military as a means to help pay for her education, as she grew up in a household raised by a hard-working single mom. She ended up extending her original five year commitment in the military from feeling so inspired by the people she was leading and serving. The conversation then transitions to the most important things Liz learned during her time in the military and Celeste asks Liz about time management skills and how she incorporates discipline into her daily routine. Liz explains that commitment and attention to detail in her schedule is important for her to maintain the consistency with her priorities and leave no room for the excuse that something can’t get done.   Celeste shifts the focus to Liz’s role as a mother and asks Liz how her daily structures and priorities have changed since having her daughter, Madison. Liz mentions how she made an effort post-partum to take time for herself away from her daughter without any feelings of guilt and explains how she got back into training post-partum, what that process looked like, as well as the approach she took during her pregnancy in regards to monitoring training and diet. Liz shares that she approached her pregnancy diet similarly to how she would an off season, yet allowed more leniency with “going over her macros” if she found herself hungry at the end of the day. Celeste then asks Liz about the difference between her preps and off seasons and Liz explains why she prefers macros over meal plans and why that method works best for her.   Next, Celeste brings up a topic that is not typically mentioned or talk about openly by competitors - the decision Liz made to drop her sponsorships during her time off. Liz explains the reasoning behind why she likes working with the sponsors she has and what brought about the decision to drop her sponsors while taking a break from competing. From there, Liz dives into what drove her decision to take time away from the stage and Celeste asks Liz to share whether or not she felt she made improvements to her physique during her pregnancy. Liz then gives listeners some insight as to her competition plans for the 2020 season, as well as the goals she has for returning to either the Olympia or Arnold stages. Also, having stepped foot on both prestigious stages, Celeste has Liz talk about her experiences as well as the differences she’s noticed between the two competitions themselves. After sharing insight and perspective on competing as a pro, Liz shares how she found bodybuilding and what motivated her to dive into the world of competing. Liz shares her early successes taking the overall in her first amateur competitions which led her to pursue nationals, yet that her road to pro was not an easy one. She explains how she had to climb the placings in various national shows, what she learned along the way, and what changes she had to make that finally led to her achieve the top spot and earn the coveted pro status.   Next, Celeste asks Liz about her preps: the approach she takes, what she endures during prep, and how she transitions from lifestyle lean to competition lean. Celeste also asks Liz how she maintains her health while in a prep and Liz mentions what she has changed or added to her routine over the years. Liz then answers a question from the listeners of whether she had noticed a difference between her preps pre- and post-baby. Since currently being in her improvement phase, Liz shares with listeners her favorite exercises for glutes, hamstrings and shoulders.   Switching the focus of conversation to a more personal note, Liz shares more about her husband and the transition he had to make when they were still dating and she started to lead a more “competitor lifestyle.” Aside from competing, Liz pursued other personal and career goals as well. Celeste asks Liz about those goals and how it felt to accomplish those goals, both personal and competition related. Although she had to juggle long distance with her husband while trying to sell one of their houses, Liz was glad she took on a promotion at her job at Target Headquarters and Liz shares how she ended up at her current job being that she received her Masters Degree in Environmental Management. Wrapping up the episode as always, Liz shares her best advice for newbie competitors and girls on their road to pro.   CONNECT WITH LIZ HERE:https://www.instagram.com/liz.yisrael.ifbbpro/ CONNECT WITH CELESTE HERE:https://www.instagram.com/celestial_fit/ Episode Time Stamps: [1:30] Liz shares her pre stage ritual.   [2:45] Celeste asks Liz what inspired her to join the army.   [3:50] Liz shares what made her sign onto the military for another 3 years after finishing the initial 5 she had agreed to.   [5:40] Celeste asks Liz more about her background in gymnastics and cheer at West Point.   [7:00] Liz talks about how she manages her time and incorporates discipline into her daily schedule.   [8:50] Celeste asks Liz if caring for her daughter, Madison, has made her schedule more difficult or harder to manage with the structure that Liz likes to maintain.   [10:20] Liz shares why it was so important for her to take time for herself post-partum and explains her transition back into training.   [12:40] Celeste asks Liz how she monitored her training and macros throughout her pregnancy.   [14:15] Liz explains the difference between her off seasons and her preps.   [15:50] Celeste asks Liz why she decided to drop her sponsors when she took a break from competing and during her pregnancy.   [17:30] Liz shares her reasons behind taking time away from the stage after competing in the 2018 Olympia.   [19:00] Celeste asks Liz if she feels that she made any improvements during her pregnancy and about her 2020 competition plans.   [23:40] Celeste asks Liz about her different experiences between competing at the Arnold and competing at the Olympia.   [25:30] Liz talks about how she got started in the world of competing.   [29:00] Liz explains how she went from overall wins at her first few competitions to climbing the placings over various national shows and what finally got her to achieve that pro status.   [32:15] Celeste asks Liz about the process and approach she uses to get from lifestyle lean to competition lean.   [35:00] Liz discusses if there’s been differences between her preps pre- and post-baby.   [36:30] Liz shares her favorite exercises for glutes, hamstrings and shoulders.   [38:50] Celeste asks Liz if her husband had to make adjustments to his habits or lifestyle when Liz got into competing.   [40:20] Liz talks about other goals and ventures she’s pursued outside of just her competition goals.   [43:50] Celeste asks Liz how she ended up in her current job after getting her Master’s in Environmental Management.   [48:20] Liz shares her advice for new competitors and girls on their road to pro.

Confessions of a Bikini Pro

In this episode Celeste has the pleasure of speaking with Emily Parris, an IFBB bikini pro who started competing in 2017 and competed in seven national shows before earning her pro card. Emily has her Masters Degree in Speech Pathology and works as a Regional Director of Operations for Reliant Rehab as well as a coach for competition and lifestyle clients. Celeste starts off the episode by asking Emily about her pre-stage ritual and from there the conversation transitions into how Emily ended up competing for the first time “on a whim.” She shares that she was ready for a new challenge in her fitness journey and was drawn in by the sparkly bikinis, the hair, makeup, etc., yet even after signing up for her first show, had no idea what the NPC was or exactly what competing entailed. From there, Emily goes on to tell listeners about her experience living abroad in Asia; how long she was there, what she did while living abroad, what made her decide to do so, and why she chose Asia. After sharing her experiences using her skills in speech pathology abroad, Celeste asks Emily to share how she got into the medical field and ultimately chose speech pathology as her career. Emily then talks about how she manages her time between competing, life, and her full time job and how she organizes her days. Next, Celeste and Emily discuss the importance of consistency and commitment and how that is such a vital aspect of making the lifestyle work, and Emily shares her experiences of a time she had a hectic schedule being on prep and traveling between California and Utah for work. Next, Celeste opens the conversation to the topic of relationships and asks Emily about not only her current relationship, but experiences she’s had with people who may not have been supportive of her lifestyle as a competitor. Emily talks about how growing up in Atlanta her desire to train for and participate in a bikini competition wasn’t widely understood and accepted right off the bat. She also opens up and talks about her fiancé Jeff, and the impact her lifestyle as a competitor has on their relationship. After getting personal, Emily answers the fun question of what her favorite exercises are for shoulders, hamstrings and glutes and why she loves those exercises. Emily also admits that she has a least favorite exercise that her coach includes in her training program, yet she does them anyways! Celeste asks Emily to share more about her coach, how she chose him and why she decided to switch coaches before competing in Universe and earning her pro card. Emily also talks about her experience competing at Wings of Strength and what it was like standing next to pros she had admired for years on social media and during her journey to becoming a pro herself. Celeste and Emily then talk training strategy and the approach Emily took in terms of her training and time off to really transform her physique and hit the national circuit and eventually turn pro. From there, Celeste opens up the conversation to the mindset aspect of the sport and asks Emily to share with listeners about her struggles during her off season in terms of mindset and how she had to learn to switch her perspective from “prep mode” to “improvement season mentality.” Also, Emily talks about a setback she had during her first off season and explains the changes she has made to have more successful off seasons in the future. Emily and Celeste discuss the importance of living a healthy and balanced lifestyle, no matter the goal, as long as there as passion and self fulfillment attached to that goal. Next, Emily talks about what she learned about her body, herself and the sport during her journey competing in various national shows before finally achieving the coveted pro status. She mentions respecting the sport and respecting the process instead of just trusting it and how understanding that respect made a difference in her outlook on her journey. Emily also shares why its so important to have love for the sport beyond just attaining the pro status and shares some goals that she has for this 2020 season, all while wanting to keep her expectations in a specific realm of where she feels personal success - whether that means making it to the Olympia stage or simply achieving callouts in her shows. Emily then talks about posing and presenting her physique on stage and her experiences working with a male posing coach as opposed to a female posing coach. She mentions the distinction she makes between criticism and feedback and how she uses that to continue to make necessary adjustments to present her physique the best way possible, whether that be with a male or female posing coach. Finishing off the episode as always, Emily shares her advice for the first time competitor as well as her advice for girls who are on their road to pro.  CONNECT WITH EMILY HERE: https://www.instagram.com/eparrisfitness/ CONNECT WITH CELESTE HERE: https://www.instagram.com/celestial_fit/ EPISODE TIME STAMPS [1:40] Emily shares her pre-stage ritual. In this episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk speaks with Reijuana (Rei Rei) Harley, research analyst, posing expert, and lifestyle coach who quickly rose to the IFBB division. After winning overall at her first show in 2017, Reijuana catapulted to the top of the division at Nationals in Miami one year later. Reijuana opens up to listeners about her impressive work experience while finishing her master's degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology. During her first national show prep, she was working two full-time jobs, a remote internship, with multiple research obligations but continued to place an emphasis on her goals in bodybuilding. She explains that her often mentally exhausting court cases and client load has shown her the importance of taking recovery days, commitment, and prioritizing efficiently. Celeste and Reijuana discuss time management, mindfulness, and the importance of preparation for success. She explains that bringing extra jewelry, an additional pair of high-heels, and an emergency meal allows for time to enjoy show day without stressed-induced anxiety. Reijuana explains that understanding your limitations and not continuously “filling your plate back up” is necessary to set healthy boundaries. Reijuana inspires listeners about her previous destructive lifestyle and how bodybuilding gave her the strength she needed to better herself. She explains that a scary situation at a party made her value the company she surrounds herself with. In addition to also surviving an abusive relationship, Reijuana explains to Celeste about her previous binge-eating disorder and how she used to take sleeping pills to avoid eating. Reijuana explains how post-show blues left her fearing weight gain, wearing baggy clothes, and guilt with eating. She explains that finding her why with competing allowed her to embrace weight gain and love her body in all forms. She also ditched the “all or nothing” mentality and embraces living a balanced lifestyle for mental wellness. Reijuana transformed her mindset of seeing food as “good” or “bad” to food for fuel. Her newfound focus on health, in addition to her intrinsic discipline, was key to her climbing the ranks to the IFBB division. Finally, Reijuana gives her best tips to first time competitors and bikini competitors on their road to pro. Reijuana is the epitome of beauty and brains! Confessions of a Bikini Pro

In this episode, host Celeste Rains-Turk speaks with Juli Lopez, a personal trainer and owner of Iron Babe Fitness, a business student and IFBB Bikini Pro who earned her pro card at Miami Nationals in 2018. Celeste kicks off the episode the way she always does by asking Juli about her pre stage ritual. Then, Celeste asks Juli about the process she took to build muscle after always being skinny growing up. Juli explains that through consistency and goal setting she saw her body changing, eventually leading her to diligently research coaches before finding the right fight and making the decision to compete. Celeste and Juli discuss the potential her coach saw in Juli before ever having competed and what they did to bring her thoughts and projections to fruition. From there, Juli talks about her early success as an amateur and how that really set the stage for her pursuing bigger goals and aspirations as a competitor.  Celeste then transitions the conversation into the mindset that Juli took on, not just setting her sights on becoming a pro, but enjoying the journey and bettering herself as an athlete overall. Next, Juli talks about what made her decide to take a break from the stage despite being so determined and focused. Juli shares the feedback the judges gave her that led her to return to the national stage and eventually earn her pro status, as well as the strategies and approaches she and her coach took with her training and nutrition to make the necessary changes. Celeste then asks Juli the fun question of which exercises for glutes, hamstrings, and shoulders, Juli finds best for building those target muscle groups. From there, Celeste transitions the conversation to a newer topic that has not been discussed much on the show before and that is the topic of dating during prep. Juli shares her thoughts, opinions, and experiences with dating during prep and living the lifestyle of a competitor.  Next, the conversation shifts to a day in the life for Juli. Celeste asks Juli what her typical day to day looks like and Juli discusses certain rituals and practices she has to keep herself focused on her goals, despite having a busy schedule. Here, Juli talks about her idea of “don’t cheat yourself” and how that mindset motivates her to stay focused on going after her goals. Celeste and Juli discuss Juli’s business and what misconceptions and stereotypes others tend to have surrounding the concept of being your own boss. Juli also offers a discount on her booty bands with code 'Bikini20' that you can find using the link to connect with Juli in the show notes! Celeste talks with Juli about how prep has positively influenced her life and business by teaching her to be very detail oriented.  The conversation then shifts back to Juli’s career as a competitor and what it was like to step on stage next to some of the top competitors in the sport who have graced some of the most prestigious stages and what then led her to take time away from the stage and transition into her first real improvement season. Juli shares that during her prep for her pro shows she ended up injuring her hamstring, yet did not disclose that information to her coach and continued to push through to the stage. Juli also walks us through her mindset and thought process as to why she decided to continue prep and hit the pro stage shortly after earning her pro status instead of first taking an off season. Celeste asks Juli the process it took for Juli to finally find her show day look and she shares tips on how to choose the suit and hair color that best fits your physique. Finally, concluding the episode Juli shares her advice for new competitors and girls on their road to pro.  Connect with Juli: https://www.instagram.com/ironbabejl/ https://www.ironbabe.shop/   Connect with Celeste:  https://www.instagram.com/celestial_fit/  www.celestial.fit Episode Time Stamps: [1:25] Juli shares with listeners her pre-stage ritual. In this Mother’s Day Series Finale Episode Host Celeste Rains-Turk talks with Jodi Riley, the 2017 bikini Olympia Amateur Champion (and pro card winner) with 7 Bikini championships. She is the Co-Owner of BBL Fitness, and Posing Coach. Jodi is currently pregnant with her first child & comes on to discuss her experiences as a child with a champion bodybuilder for a mom and her perspectives gained from pregnancy as well as for the future.   The episode begins with Jodi discussing her pre-stage rituals and how she prepares her teams competitive athletes to bring out the sass on stage. Jodi talks about the importance of getting comfortable prior to stepping food on stage and visualizing the whole experience long before actually competing.    The connection between the athletes and coach’s is very important to Jodi and the Body By Loleta team, as they want to keep a very hands on approach through each athletes prep. As Jodi talks about the team, she explains her experience with having her mother as a competitive bodybuilding athlete and how the team got started. Jodi talks about her lack of interest in the lifestyle throughout her youth even though she was involved with assisting her mother backstage at shows since a young age.    As the episode continues, Jodi reflects on being overweight and her mother encouraging her as a teenager to change her lifestyle. Once Jodi realized her health was deteriorating, she approached her mother for help. Jodi talks about the results she began to notice after doing the bare minimum with balancing her nutrition and exercise. Jodi explains as she began to see results, she wanted to see what she could ultimately achieve. From beginning of her competition career, Jodi elaborates on her preparations with her mother. Jodi talks about how much she values the incredible bond that was created with her mother through their similar interest and focus.    Throughout the episode, Jodi talks about her discipline and determination which holds true during her story of her prep for the Olympia Amateur. She was weeks out when hurricane Urma hit Florida. She laughs reflecting back on the scenarios she had to endure yet kept faith that she was meant to compete. Her resiliency ultimately leads to her earning her pro card at the first Olympia Amateur show.    Jodi talks about when an athlete is ready for prep or not and the importance of commitment to the sport. An athlete has to decide that they are ready, and nothing should deter them from sticking to the plan 100%. Jodi is extremely driven and a competitive athlete, yet she does make time for her other hobbies which include traveling. In this episode host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down with Chantel Hall, a mother of a five-year-old and a three-year-old who has been competing since 2012 and went pro at USAs in 2019. She is an online coach for lifestyle and competition clients and she recently relocated to Arizona during her prep for USA’s.  Since her competition debut in 2012, Chantel discusses coaching herself for several years until she decided to bring on a coach after she earned second place and was disappointed. With her coach’s guidance, Chantel shares how she learned to properly peak, ate a lot more and was pushed to lift more and more weight. She quickly learned that succeeding as a bikini competitor wasn’t just about being lean, it was about having the muscle to show when she leaned out. As the episode progresses, Chantel opens up about the importance of refeeds for both herself and her competitors. She explains how, in her experience, she finds refeeds tend to be “more crucial the leaner you get,” and goes even further to explain when she chooses to utilize refeeds with her own clients based on their hunger levels as well as biological and mental cues. Chantel then talks about the importance of eating intuitively. She shares how her diet of primarily whole foods has benefited her during her season and how it continues to benefit her in her offseason when she lets go of the macros and feeds her body what it needs. Chantel explains how she chooses food based upon not only her love for the food but because of what the food does for her in terms of the taste and health benefits. Being a mother, Chantel shares how she talks with her children about the food they eat. Although her children are young, she explains food choices in ways they can understand such as eating protein to make them strong. She feels strongly that if you want to manage work, children, being a wife and her own needs, a mother will learn how to prioritize her time to make everything fit, even if it includes bringing her children to the gym daycare. After pregnancy, Chantel talks about the changes she experienced in her physique, including ab separation and an umbilical hernia. She stresses the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle which includes lifting weights during pregnancy and how she believes it caused her to “snap back” quicker from her pregnancy. She shares how she didn’t experience stretch marks in her pregnancies and attests this to continuing to exercise, eating whole foods and keeping her protein levels up. As the episode draws to a close, Chantel shares her best pieces of advice, with a spin on the usual questions. First, she shares advice to future moms who are currently competing but want to start a family of their own and then she talks towards the new moms who want to compete or get back to competing. In this insightful momma episode, Chantel shares the importance of routine, structure and building muscle all while holding the best job in the world: being a mom. When it comes to making major life decisions, we make decisions based on a combination of: What do we value with regard to the thing in the picture that we need to make a decision on? What are our underlying needs in relation to that decision? What are our belief systems around that thing in the picture that often becomes a part of our operating paradigm? In part 1, we look at how we make decisions based on our core values. Our values are a result of our habits. We form habits by repeating a seat of actions influenced by triggers with associated rewards. The triggers are often environmental or psychological i.e. what we see and hear around us, our internal narrative, and how we think and feel about different things. And that our environmental and psychological triggers are a direct result of our belief system. ——— Episode Timestamps: 0:0 - What drives us to make major life decisions? 2:07 - Values-driven job hunt 10:08 - The Personal Core Values Exercise 18:20 - Interesting findings ——— Resources: Transcript: https://ankurman.substack.com/p/what-drives-you-to-make-a-decision The Personal Core Values Exercise Spreadsheet: https://bit.ly/2LvmSpn

Confessions of a Bikini Pro

In this episode host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down with IFBB Pro Lexus Redmond. This Las Vegas native is a posing coach, a trainer, holds a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience.   Lexus talks about her personal struggle with depression and how after watching her aunt compete in 2009 she decided that it was something she wanted too. Her aunts glowing confidence and happiness was what drove her towards the gym. Lexus talks about being diagnosed with depression in her childhood and by working out with her aunt she found happiness in a way she did not expect. Lexus made the decision to forego her anti-depressants in favor of movement to help her depression and she found it worked better than any medication she had been prescribed.   After taking third place at her pro debut and collecting Olympia points, Lexus and her coach had devised a plan to get her to the Olympia stage but it was quickly disrupted with the COVID-19 cancellations. Lexus talks about the new plan she and her coach have devised for her to step on that stage and how the lack of the gym has affected her depression.   In an incredibly unsettling story, Lexus shares how the coach she worked with for four years, and had known on an intimate level, completely disappeared from her life, almost overnight, while they were making decisions about pursuing her pro card at North Americans. Lexus demonstrated her tenacity as she pushed forward, however. Although she missed the cut off for North Americans, Lexus talks about how she decided to take on the Amateur Olympia without a coach. She did so with flying colors and ended up taking home her pro card and a huge sense of pride in herself.   Like most competitors, Lexus has faced backlash from her family regarding the pictures she chooses to post on social media showcasing all the hard work she put into her physique. Lexus talks about how she internally combats the disapproval, particularly from her grandmother, and how she copes with family members who don’t understand the bodybuilding lifestyle. “I’m not going to let someone who doesn’t like me or what I’m posting get to me,” Lexus says as she acknowledges the level of pride she experiences from seeing her hard work displayed.   As the episode concludes, Lexus shares her best pieces of advice for competitors in all different stages in the body building journey, from stepping on stage to striving for a pro card. In this insightful, inspiring and meaningful episode, Lexus shares how even though your coach may leave you and things might feel bleak, the best really is coming. In this special episode, Celeste has the pleasure of talking to FIVE bikini pros that have been on the show before to discuss all things Coronavirus and lockdown related. Ashley Kaltwasser, Anya Nicholson, Phoebe Hagan, Carla Garthwaite and Jennifer Dorie come together and discuss how they’ve been affected by the lockdown and quarantine procedures, their mindset and mentality moving forward in terms of competing and their day to day life, the adjustments they’ve made with training and diet strategies in the home workout platform, their thoughts on the future of the 2020 competition season and more.   Celeste kicks off the episode telling listeners how the idea for a group episode came about when Anya brought up the idea in conversation once all the shutdowns and quarantine procedures started taking effect nation and worldwide. Anya thought that it would be a good idea for competitors to come together and discuss their experiences and the transitions they’ve had to make despite the uncertainty of the competition season.   Celeste first opens the floor to all the girls to discuss the topic of their mindset and mentality; have they had to readjust to the 100% all or nothing mindset they maintain during a “normal prep” or have they been able to keep pushing forward despite the circumstances? From there, Celeste asks the girls whether or not they still plan on competing towards the end of 2020 or if they will be transitioning into a reverse diet and improvement season instead.   The competitors talk about how they have had to adjust their training and diet regimens to an at home setting, each competitor sharing their own unique adjustments and strategies they have taken on since making the transition. Celeste asks Phoebe of her competition plans in hopes of still being able to earn her spot to qualify for the 2020 Olympia.   From there the conversation transitions to how the girls have been affected in other aspects of life, in terms of their events & appearances, businesses, and even family life. Celeste opens up the conversation and the girls talk about their opinions on the changes that will be made to the qualifications for not only the Olympia, but for national level shows for amateur competitors, what they predict in terms of the turnout for the shows that do open up, and how they feel about going into those shows.   The girls collectively discuss how they’ve been dealing with their mentality and their anxieties not just in terms of competing and show cancellations and postponements, but in their daily lifestyle as well.
