Meredith and Kaytee are chatting this week with a very special guest! She is the person that has been MOST requested as a guest on our show, and she’s here! Anne Bogel, creator of Modern Mrs. Darcy and What Should I Read Next, and general, all-around amazing lady, is chatting with us today and we couldn’t be more excited. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from all three of us: two are very similar in that they involve bookish friendships, and one is a library-related book demerit (a la Gretchen Rubin on the Happier podcast). Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. Two titles from each host, and we are bringing a wide range of books, from romance to thrillers, to interesting writing styles, to weirdo books. It’s all here! We’ve got an update for you on our Slow But Steady reads and what’s been happening in the past week, as well as a fun update from a listener. For our deep dive this week, we are chatting all things Anne Bogel. You’ll hear about the advice she would have given herself before Episode 1 of What Should I Read Next (now that she’s 200+ episodes in), you’ll hear about her new book coming out next year, and a bit of behind the scenes talk about giving book recs on the fly. Finally, this week, we are Pressing Books into Your Hands. And we know you cannot wait to see what Anne chose as her press! We’ve got a novella for every reader who loves books about books, the beginning of a new (old) mystery series, and a summer read that we’ve gushed about in previous episodes. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Meredith and Kaytee had to call in the big guns this week, so they invited Amanda Espinosa to join them for this special episode of Currently Reading! Continuing Important announcement: we have a great discount code to share with you from The Bookshelf Thomasville! Now through June 30th, you can get anything on their website for 10% off using the code CURRENTLYREADING (wow!!!) This would be a great time to pick up a Shelf Subscription for yourself or others! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each host: a perfectly bookish gift for a Labyrinth fan, a fun reading tracking idea, and a local bookstore visit. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a great book club chat, a new reading experience, and an unexpected bookish connection with a group of kids. Next, we discuss our current reads. Since there are three of us, we kept it to two titles each, but they are two great book s from each host that are sure to have big opinions from the interwebs. It's the latest installment of our show within a show, Love It or Loathe It, in which Annie, Emily, and Hunter discuss a contentious book in a book club-style roundtable. This week: Fierce Kingdom by Gin Phillips. Also mentioned this week: + Room by Emma Donoghue + Get Out SPOILER DISCUSSION OCCURS BETWEEN 19:00 AND 21:12. This episode is brought to you in part by the city of Thomasville. Come join us for Victorian Christmas, our annual celebration of the holiday in the manner of a Victorian street fair! Hey there word nerds! Today I am so excited to have author Gin Phillips on the show! When I received the pitch for Gin’s most recent book, Fierce Kingdom, it took my breath away. Not “oh this is cool” kind of take your breath away but punched-in-the-gut, heart-wrenching, “I don’t think I can put this book down” kind of take your breath away. Fierce Kingdom is a book about a mother and her son, trapped in a zoo that has been taken over by armed gunmen, and the lengths this mother will go to protect her child. Hooked yet? Listen in as Gin and I chat about her novel, and how to balance a fast paced plot with a strong and realistic mother-son bond. In this episode Gin and I discuss: How to bring a realistic mother-son relationship to the page. What nuances to use to create a three dimensional child character. Why you should use specific details instead of generalities to connect with your readers. How to bing plot and character development together in every single scene. When to speed up and when to slow down: Gin’s techniques to balance pacing in the tightest story timeframe. Plus, Gin’s #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: DIYMFA.com/171
Fierce Kingdom is such an awful book in my opinion. • Books that have been suggested to me. • More books that have been suggested. Part 2 of my last post.

Gin Phillips Fierce Kingdom An electrifying novel about the primal and unyielding bond between a mother and her son, and the lengths she’ll go to protect him. The zoo is nearly empty as Joan and her four-year-old son soak up the last few moments of playtime. They are happy, and the day has been close to perfect. But what Joan sees as she hustles her son toward the exit gate minutes before closing time sends her sprinting back into the zoo, her child in her arms. And for the next three hours—the entire scope of the novel—she keeps on running. A masterful thrill ride and an exploration of motherhood itself—from its tender moments of grace to its savage power—Fierce Kingdom asks where the boundary is between our animal instinct to survive and our human duty to protect one another. For whom should a mother risk her life? FIERCE KINGDOM has already garnered worldwide buzz, with rights sold in 29 countries, the film option sold to Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, and rave reviews from all four trade publications. This page-turner is poised to become the must-read literary thriller of the summer.
You may not have heard of Gin Phillips since she's a debut writer but we think her thriller FIERCE KINGDOM has the potential to be a huge summer hit. We also talk to Joshua Cohen, whose insightful and funny new novel MOVING KINGS packs a lot into a short amount of pages. And we ask our senior editors which bestsellers out this week are worth the read!
