In this episode, Rick Tocquigny, a distinguished mentor, founder, and the voice behind the “Success Made to Last” podcast, as well as an accomplished author and Pulitzer Prize finalist, delves into the profound realization that serving others holds greater significance than mere personal success. This insight became particularly poignant following the loss of close family members. Rick places high value on asking meaningful questions and sharing narratives of resilience. He underscores the critical role of passing down life lessons to preserve family histories, drawing on examples like his mother's experiences during World War II. Furthermore, Rick highlights the imperative for startup leaders to align their actions with their core values from the outset, ensuring cohesion and adherence to these principles, especially in financially challenging times. He also sheds light on the importance of collaboration and strategic planning in the early stages of a startup, asserting that while monetary concerns are paramount initially, the synergy of a united team is equally crucial for success. Key Takeaways: [04:52] Rick shares that he started caring more about helping others after losing some important people in his life. He realized that making a real difference is more important than just being successful. Helping others and leaving a good impact became his main goal, even if it's not noticed by everyone. Rick also believes that it's all about making the world a better place, no matter what happens. [11:11] He mentions that he appreciates a thought-provoking question and discusses the significance of curiosity and deep questioning. Rick also highlights that he finds inspiration in stories like "My Side of the Mountain" that explore survival and self-discovery. Drawing from their time at Procter & Gamble, he stresses the importance of asking insightful questions to uncover meaningful stories. [16:22] Rick explains that his project of sharing life lessons began after losing his parents in 2003 and 2005. He realized the importance of preserving family stories, like their mom's experience in World War II, which inspired him to encourage others to do the same. While some veterans might be hesitant due to PTSD, Rick urges people to record stories for future generations, even if it means ensuring accuracy by gathering facts. [19:16] He shares a touching story from his book about a teacher in Arkansas who rearranged her classroom, leaving her students confused. Eventually, she revealed that the desks and chairs were provided by veterans. This gesture was a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans for the freedom enjoyed every day. Rick then emphasizes the importance of honoring and remembering the contributions of veterans and their families. [23:54] Rick explains that if an organization's core values don't align with its strategic direction, they won't contribute to success. He also mentions the importance of integrating core values into daily operations and decision-making processes. Without this integration, core values can seem superficial and meaningless. Furthermore, if employees don't believe in the core values, they won't influence behavior or contribute to the strategy. [26:40] He reflects on leadership in startup environments, emphasizing the importance of aligning core values from the beginning. Rick stresses the need for leaders to exemplify collaboration and alignment with core values, especially in startup scenarios where resources may be limited. He suggests that podcasts should focus on speaking to entrepreneurs starting their own businesses rather than Fortune 500 executives, as these individuals are navigating the real-world challenges of building a company from the ground up. Rick also highlights the significance of strategy and culture in shaping the success of a startup, noting that while culture is important, practical concerns like making payroll take precedence in the early stages of business development. [32:48] Rick expresses gratitude for his mentors who have influenced his understanding of success and significance. He mentions Preston Paddon, known for his role in negotiating the NFL contract with Fox, who taught them the importance of resilience and rolling with rejection. Finally, Rick highlights Frank Blake, former CEO of Home Depot, who shared a valuable lesson about aligning personal interests, skills, and market demand to guide career choices. He also emphasizes the significance of considering passion, proficiency, and market demand in career decisions. [31:20] He talks about how everyone feels lonely sometimes and wishes for deeper connections with others. Rick mentions that despite success, many people feel something is missing or have regrets about not spending enough time with loved ones. He also notes that everyone has their own struggles and imperfections, and some people spend a lot of time trying to be perfect in their careers, without success. He says that societal pressures, like those seen on LinkedIn, can add to feelings of inadequacy. Rick then suggests being more understanding of others' struggles instead of expecting perfection. [33:05] Rick reflects on the misconception that retirees simply party a lot, suggesting instead that they often uphold traditional family values, faith, and patriotism. He shares a personal regret about moving away from their parents to pursue a career opportunity with PepsiCo, realizing in hindsight that they sacrificed valuable time with their young children and missed out on the support of his parents. Rick expresses regret for prioritizing career ambition over family connections, and wishes he had made a different choice. [35:17] He encourages others to prioritize listening and collaboration in their relationships, following the ratio of two ears to one mouth. Rick emphasizes the importance of embracing collaboration to maximize everyone's skills, echoing advice from their mentor. He advocates for approaching life with a mindset of "spontaneous structure," balancing structure with spontaneity to engage in meaningful conversations and experiences. Rick also urges people to seize opportunities, even if it means taking risks or facing challenges, and to prioritize making a positive impact on both themselves and others. [46:17] Closing Quote: Remember, a human being would certainly not grow to be 70 or 80 years old if this longevity had no meaning for the species. The afternoon of human life must also have a significance of its own and cannot be merely a pitiful appendage to life's morning. -Carl Jung Quotable Quotes: "Success is commonly associated with reaching a high level of wealth and often status, a self-centered role." "Significance is about making a positive difference, leaving a legacy, and contributing to the betterment of society." "Don't expect anybody to say thank you to you." "It's about giving back without anybody noticing and just feeling good about it and doing something for somebody else." "Giving your time and effort to others actually has a positive physical effect on you." "Everybody can get more when they give." "The audience is the hero." "You just have to get to that wisdom within a person or their personal experience." "Take the time to ask these people before they're gone about their stories." "Record history in a fun and factual manner." "Keep the history of your families going." "Get as many of the facts in as possible." "Walk the talk yourself first as a collaborator and a person who leads alignment." "We are all broken people, and we are all on this personal journey and odyssey." "Some people wander through life like the mountain lion by your house who doesn't know exactly where he's going, but he needs his next meal." "People need people and they need friends." "Take more time for friends and family; less time for work." "Everybody is a sinner, so no one's perfect." "Approach any relationship as a collaboration and how you can get the best out of everyone's skill set." "Roll with it, have more fun, laugh more, and consider structuring your life under this kind of new way of doing things." “You got one life to live. Frank Blake is the former CEO and Chairman of Home Depot, where he led a massive company turn around during his tenure. Frank's other leadership positions include serving as board member at Delta, general counsel at GE, general counsel for the EPA, deputy secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy, deputy counsel to Vice President George H. W. Bush, and law clerk for Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Frank earned an undergraduate degree from Harvard and a law degree from Columbia. In this episode we discuss the following: The single most underappreciated tool that leaders have is the recognition and gratitude they can express to people working for them, and doing it in a way that is memorable for the people who are recognized and celebrated. Frank recognized people by bringing them up on stage and telling stories about them that demonstrated great customer service. Frank recognized people by writing 200 handwritten personal notes every Sunday, thanking them for specific things they had done. Just as kids will root for athletes who take the time to sign autographs, Frank generated support from his team by writing them personal letters of recognition. Every business leader knows the phrase, “You get what you measure.” Frank's corollary is, "You get what you recognize and celebrate." If I say to someone, “I want you to provide great customer service” that sort of vaporizes instantaneously. But if I share a story of great customer service, everyone understands it and can apply it. When you tell a story that illustrates great customer service, people start talking about the behaviors they're doing that are similar, and the behavior gets reinforced and you get real momentum in the organization. More often than not, leaders are unintentional and undisciplined about how they recognize and celebrate their employees. Frank learned the power of recognition when he worked for George H. W. Bush. As VP, George started every day by spending an hour typing out personal notes. As a staff member, when Frank got a note from the VP, he felt like he walked on air. You can surprise people by thanking them and doing it in a specific way. On today's episode, co-host Brandon Smith takes a deep dive into these concepts and shares some additional ways you as a leader can implement them.

Frank Blake never set his sights on the corner office, but that didn't stop the Home Depot from calling. When Frank took over the home improvement giant, their stock-price was at an all-time low and they were being bested in every metric by their competitors. Frank turned the Big Orange around by focusing on service and people. The leadership wisdom that pours out of this living legend is second-to-none.
Leaders who don't listen will eventually be surrounded by people who have nothing to say. Back in 2015, Frank Blake and I discussed how to create an environment for honest feedback. In 2022, this is more important than ever. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Everything changes when we picture our organization upside down, with the CEO bearing the weight at the bottom and pushing vision up through the organization to the customer. Back in September 2015, Frank Blake and I discussed how and why this approach creates vision that will stick. As we enter 2022, this approach is more relevant than ever. Frank Blake looks back on a leadership lesson and discovers a new meaning. How can you show gratitude when you don't know who to thank?
No one is ever really in charge. Frank Blake, the former CEO of The Home Depot, points out that authority is actually a myth. And he should know. When he was “in charge” of The Home Depot, the company employed 300,000 people, and yet, he says authority alone will still not move people to follow the leader. Even if you're not leading a church, don't forget that your business is still the people business. Customer service matters. And saying "THANK YOU?" That's not just an act of goodwill, but it builds influence & trust. Who can you "power hour" today?

As a lawyer working in mergers and acquisitions for Home Depot, Frank Blake was shocked to be offered the job of CEO in 2007. For the next eight years, he experienced a crash course in leadership at the highest level. Taking cues from his son (a store manager at the time) and “Built From Scratch”, the story of Home Depot, Frank employed the “inverted pyramid” approach to his new role. Listen as David and Frank discuss the power of handwritten notes, avoiding the CEO “bubble”, and why he decided Home Depot should stop opening new stores.
“You get what you celebrate.” That's the powerful lesson former Home Depot CEO Frank Blake learned while engineering a corporate turnaround. While he has spent most of his life in the business world, Frank and former Home Depot VP Brad Shaw decided to take a crazy turn and create an organization to celebrate people who are doing something right. With their podcast “Crazy Good Turns,” Blake and Shaw are bringing that idea to the world at large. If we celebrate those who do good deeds, will we see more of them? If you hear a story about an inspiring person doing something amazing for somebody else, will you try to be a little better too? They invite you to join and see at https://crazygoodturns.org.

I found this article on the website TheChickenWire.com. It was called Humble at the Top: Why These CEOs Still Write Thank You Notes One of the people they profiled was Frank Blake: Former CEO, The Home Depot Frank Blake learned the art of writing notes from one of America's masters of the practice, President George H.W. Bush. He served as Deputy Counsel when Bush was Vice President. “Vice President Bush started every day by typing notes to people,” Blake said. “You knew they were typed by him because some of the letters were off line and there could be misspellings. I saw the power of taking the time to write a nice word to someone.” When Blake became CEO of The Home Depot in 2007, he established a process for writing notes: regional and district managers sent him recommendations of store associates whose work or service deserved recognition. Blake spent a half-day or more each weekend writing notes by hand – and was inspired by what he learned. “Our people did amazingly generous things for others,” he said. “It was a great way for me to end the week.” It is important, he added, to be specific in the notes. And they don't have to be long – most of his are two or three sentences and usually cover only the front of a monogrammed card. “In an age of email and texts, there is something personal and special about a handwritten note,” Blake said. “I have saved every meaningful note I have ever received.” Pretty awesome!

Today, I interview Frank Blake, who as CEO brought Home Depot through a massive data breach. Frank is a former co-clerk of mine; a former deputy secretary of energy; and the current host of Crazy Good Turns, a podcast about people who have found remarkable, even crazy, ways to help others. In addition to his insights on what it takes to lead an organization, Frank offers his views on how technology can transform nonprofit charitable initiatives. Along the way, he displays his characteristic sense of humor, especially about himself. In the News Roundup, I ask Matthew Heiman if Google could have had a worse week in Washington. First Peter Thiel raised the question of whether it's treasonous for the company to work on AI with Chinese scientists, not the U.S. Defense Department, and then Richard Clarke, hardly a conservative, says he agrees with the criticism. Inevitably, President Trump weighed in with a Thiel-supporting tweet. Meanwhile, on the Hill, Google's VP says the company has “terminated” Project Dragonfly, an effort to build a search engine that the Chinese government would approve. But that doesn't prevent conservatives from lambasting the company for bias against conservatives and an unfair subsidy in the form of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The only good news for Google is that, despite all the thunder, no lightning has yet struck. Or so we thought for about five minutes, at which time Gus Hurwitz noted that Google is likely to face multimillion-dollar fines in a Federal Trade Commission investigation of child Internet privacy violations, not to mention a rule-making designed to increase the probability of future fines. Speaking of which, European lightning struck Amazon this week in the form of new competition law scrutiny. Gus offers skepticism about the EU's theory, over my counter-skepticism. Nick Weaver is astonished at the way Julian Assange managed to turn the Ecuadorian embassy into a fist-fighting, feces-smearing, election-meddling command post. Nick also predicts that Kazakhstan will lose its war with Silicon Valley browser makers over a man-in-the-middle certificate the Kazakh government is forcing on its citizens in order to monitor their Internet browsing. And in short hits, Gus questions whether $650 million is a harsh settlement of Equifax's data breach liability; Nick closes the books on NSA hoarder Hal Martin's 9-year prison sentence; and Nick explains the latest doxing of an intelligence agency—this time a contractor for the Russian FSB. Absolutely loved having Frank come on the show this week - Frank is the former CEO of The Home Depot and a non-executive chairman of Delta Airlines, among a host of other large achievements. We sat down and talked heavily about businesses at a macro level, as well as running a business internally - how and why 360 reviews aren't an efficient or effective method of reviews within a company. There's some really, really great segments here that I think you'll love. Make sure you check out Crazy Good Turns, the Podcast about inspiring stories and people that Frank produces at crazygoodturns.org *Originally published to The GaryVee Audio Experience on July 14, 2018
The former CEO of Home Depot shows Cal how he used questions and conversations to lift the fortunes of the company between 2007 and 2014. But this was only after he observed how questions could be used as traps, tests or even look like a “live wire in a wet basement” in political, legal and corporate settings during the decades before. This is an authentic conversation that, at times, surprised both Frank and Cal, and took place in front of attendees at the two12 conference in Vail, Colorado.
Exciting changes ahead! Our founder takes over the show and talks about what you can expect from now on.
