Welcome to episode #977 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Dan Heath is a frequent and always welcome guest on this show, and with good reason - few people have done more to translate complex human behavior and organizational dynamics into smart, actionable insights. You probably know Dan as the co-author (with his brother Chip Heath) of some of the most beloved and bestselling business books of the past two decades, including Made To Stick, Switch, Decisive, and The Power of Moments. His work has reshaped the way leaders think about communication, decision-making, change, and the emotional beats that define experience. With his latest solo book, Reset - How To Change What's Not Working, Dan continues this tradition - offering a practical framework for identifying leverage points that can unlock real transformation, even in systems that feel stuck or bloated by inertia. In this conversation, we dug into why momentum beats speed, how progress (not perfection) is the most powerful motivator in the workplace, and why so many leaders miss the mark by focusing on customer experience while overlooking the employee experience. We also talk about the role of self-doubt, the necessity of feedback, and how the Great Resignation isn't just about quitting - it's about a systemic failure to reimagine work. Dan's signature mix of rigorous research, compelling storytelling, and approachable wisdom is on full display here. You should also check out his podcast, What It's Like To Be…. If you've ever wondered why change efforts stall - or how to get unstuck with the same people and resources - this one's for you. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 56:48. How to turn latent motivation into fuel for change. If you want to be a changemaker, you'll have to convince others to join your cause. But according to Dan Heath, persuading your audience isn't about creating new motivation — it's about leveraging the motivation that's already there.“The most important fuel for any change effort is motivation,” says Heath, the number-one New York Times bestselling author of Reset: How to Change What's Not Working. Instead of struggling to persuade people to want what you want, Heath suggests finding where your goals overlap with the things they already desire. "Before you even get to persuasion, if you can just tap and unleash the energy that's already there, you've already catapulted yourself toward success,” he says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Heath and host Matt Abrahams explore how to create more compelling communication using “leverage points,” or as Heath says, “where a little bit of effort yields a disproportionate return.” Whether getting buy-in from one teammate or achieving change across an entire organization, Heath shares practical tips for turning latent motivation into an engine for change.Get more done with Grammarly. The New York Times bestselling authors of Switch and Made to Stick explore why certain brief experiences can jolt us and elevate us and change us—and how we can learn to create such extraordinary moments in our life and work. While human lives are endlessly variable, our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter. What if a teacher could design a lesson that he knew his students would remember twenty years later? What if a manager knew how to create an experience that would delight customers? What if you had a better sense of how to create memories that matter for your children? This book delves into some fascinating mysteries of experience: Why we tend to remember the best or worst moment of an experience, as well as the last moment, and forget the rest. Why “we feel most comfortable when things are certain, but we feel most alive when they're not.” And why our most cherished memories are clustered into a brief period during our youth.Readers discover how brief experiences can change lives, such as the experiment in which two strangers meet in a room, and forty-five minutes later, they leave as best friends. (What happens in that time?) Or the tale of the world's youngest female billionaire, who credits her resilience to something her father asked the family at the dinner table. (What was that simple question?)Many of the defining moments in our lives are the result of accident or luck—but why would we leave our most meaningful, memorable moments to chance when we can create them? The Power of Moments shows us how to be the author of richer experiences.

Dagens boksammendrag i EXPresso Coffee Reads er boka Made To Stick (Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die), av brødrene Chip & Dan Heath. Chip og Dan Heath er en broderlig tankeledelse, og er forfattere av Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die (2007); Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard (2010); og avgjørende: Hvordan ta bedre beslutninger i liv og arbeid (2013). Historier viser visdom. The curse of knowledge The curse of knowledge is a cognitive bias that occurs when an individual communicating with other individuals assumes they have the background knowledge to understand. This bias is also called by some authors the curse of expertise Hvis du ønsker at ideene dine skal bli husket ikke fortell om hele ideen på en gang, folk ønsker å vite hvordan ting ender før de begynner å fokusere på noe annet. Hvis det er noen bøker som du ønsker at vi skal snakke om, skrik ut! Expresso på sosiale medier

Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath is such a great book, one that is well written as well as so simply laid out. This is thanks to their acronym which they like to attribute to making things memorable - SUCCES.Simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional and stories. Each one of these is crucial in the ability to express ideas in a way that is easy to understand and therefore more memorable. Jes and I explore each one of these elements in-depth while also touching on topics such as the curse of knowledge, lack of common language and abstraction. This book really is good for anyone who is looking to make an idea of theirs stick, whether that's pitching a client an idea or just having a conversation with someone,  as long as you follow this structure, you are unlikely to go wrong. --If you enjoyed this podcast make sure to check out our other content on our other platforms:    - Website: https://wisewords.blog/    - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wisewords.blog/    - Twitter: https://twitter.com/wisewordsblog    - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/WiseWordsBlog

Mark Twain once observed, "A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on." His observation rings true: Urban legends, conspiracy theories, and bogus news stories circulate effortlessly. Meanwhile, people with important ideas--entrepreneurs, teachers, politicians, and journalists--struggle to make them "stick." In Made to Stick, Chip and Dan Heath reveal the anatomy of ideas that stick and explain ways to make ideas stickier, such as applying the human scale principle, using the Velcro Theory of Memory, and creating curiosity gaps. Along the way, we discover that sticky messages of all kinds--from the infamous "kidney theft ring" hoax to a coach's lessons on sportsmanship to a vision for a new product at Sony--draw their power from the same six traits. Made to Stick will transform the way you communicate. It's a fast-paced tour of success stories (and failures): the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who drank a glass of bacteria to prove a point about stomach ulcers; the charities who make use of the Mother Teresa Effect; the elementary-school teacher whose simulation actually prevented racial prejudice. Provocative, eye-opening, and often surprisingly funny, Made to Stick shows us the vital principles of winning ideas--and tells us how we can apply these rules to making our own messages stick. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

Welcome to episode #739 of Six Pixels of Separation. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - Episode #738 - Host: Mitch Joel. When asked who my favorite business book authors are, the Heath brothers (Dan and Chip), show up at the top of that list. It's hard to not love brilliant books like, Made To Stick, Switch, Decisive, and The Power of Moments. Combined, they've sold over three million copies worldwide that have been translated into over thirty languages. Over the years, I've spoken at events where Dan was speaking as well. He is always kind, generous and giving of his time (and wisdom). While the brothers are still close, Dan decided to publish his own book recently. It's called, Upstream - The quest to solve problems before they happen, and it's a great read (as expected). Dan is a Senior Fellow at Duke University’s CASE center, which supports social entrepreneurs. Previously, Dan worked as a researcher and case writer for Harvard Business School. In the late 1990s, Dan co-founded an innovative publishing company called Thinkwell, which for almost 25 years has been producing a line of online college textbooks that feature video lectures from some of the country’s top professors. Dan has a MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA from the Plan II Honors Program from the University of Texas at Austin. One proud geeky moment for Dan was his victory in the 2005 New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest, beating out 13,000 other entrants. In this episode, we look at our decision making process and how we can not just solve problems, but prevent them from ever taking place. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:00:43. Thanks so much for downloading On The Fly! This is episode 7 with Sarah Gershman – you’ll notice she doesn’t zone out once during this pod chat! And that's because she is an Executive Speech Coach and Presentation Skills Trainer in Washington, D.C. You can find her online here: https://www.greenroomspeakers.com/ No matter who or where you are right now, a big chunk of the last few months has probably been spent talking to people on a screen through Zoom, Skype, FaceTime and any number of video chat apps… And on the plus side, no doubt they’ve saved our sanity (as well as our businesses) but it’s exhausting… especially for work where it’s less about the chat and more about concentration and productivity. And so if you relate to any of that I think you’ll enjoy this chat… Sarah wrote an article about this for The Harvard Business Review, called “Stop Zoning out on Zoom” – and it was a real eye opener for me and I had to know more. In this conversation Sarah expands on the topics in her articles (she also wrote another about conference calls) and talks about hosts, and participants can get more out of video and conference calls and I hope you’ll find it really helpful. Book of the Month - "Made To Stick"

Real Estate Espresso

On today show we are featuring the book of the month. In order to be considered for book of the month, a book has to meet a very simple criteria. Work must be impactful enough to change your life or your perspective on the world. Whether it does or not of course is up to you. You might consume the content, remark on how good it is, and continue your life as before. But if you do you’re missing the point. Our book this month is by two brothers who are both university professors on opposite sides of the country. Chip and Dan Heath are professors at Duke and Stanford University. They have written several books together and the book I’d like to showcase is called “Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die”. It examines why some ideas are highly memorable and others are completely forgettable. If you want your words to be remembered, and if there exists a formula for why some things are memorable, would you want to know that? For example, the sentence “ A bird in the hand, is worth two in the tree.” That sentence is nearly 1000 years old. Why is it that sentence has been repeated time and time again and has lasted nearly 1000 years? Of all the other sentences that have been uttered in the last thousand years this one has been repeated billions of times. Not only that, the same sentence also exists in multiple languages almost Word for Word. I’ll give you a simple example from modern day politics. I have no political affiliation in the US. I live in Canada. There’s lots going on in US politics on both sides of the aisle that I disagree with. If you go back to the last presidential election, Donald Trump’s slogan was “Make America Great Again “. Even democrats remember that slogan. But if you were to ask any American what Hilary Clinton’s slogan was, the vast majority have no idea. Even most democrats can’t remember Hillary Clinton’s slogan. Speaking in a way that is memorable is vitally important. Robert Kiyosaki is another person who has mastered the art of memorable communication. Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Savers are losers. Your house is not an asset. The central ideas of a book published 20 years ago are easy to remember and repeat. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. Hillary Clinton’s slogan was “I’m with her”. That’s right, “I’m with her”. The book's outline follows the acronym "SUCCES" (with the last s omitted). Each letter refers to a characteristic that can help make an idea "sticky": Simple – find the core of any idea Unexpected – grab people's attention by surprising them Concrete – make sure an idea can be grasped and remembered later Credible – give an idea believability Emotional – help people see the importance of an idea Stories – empower people to use an idea through narrative As scriptwriters have learned, curiosity is the intellectual need to answer questions and close patterns. Story tellers oppose this universal desire by doing the opposite, posing questions and opening situations. So, they key is to open gaps first in presenting your ideas, then work to close them; the tendency is to give facts first. The local news uses this technique very well: They might use a hook like Coming up after the break, Real estate expert Victor Menasce will be here to show you that if you can’t afford a house, you should buy two. That’s an example of a hook that has a surprise twist to it. The idea is simple. If you buy a duplex, you can use the income from renting the other half to subsidize your home ownership. If speaking in a memorable way matters to you, "Made to Stick" could change your life.

ShareTweetPin https://youtu.be/umvqW8xWlDM “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” – Jim Rohn Look around you, everything you have achieved or not achieved is a result of your choices and habits. If you do not like your results, it is time to change your habits and build success habits into your daily routines. You have good habits and bad habits – we all do. It is a matter of examining what habits are working for you and which habits are not. James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, says “every habit is just an obstacle to getting what you really want. Dieting is an obstacle to getting fit. Meditation is an obstacle to feel calm. Journaling is an obstacle to thinking clearly.” What do you want? Keep an Open Mind. The thought of changing something may make you uneasy or anxious. Changes do not have to be big to make an impact. Small shifts in habits can lead to big results. The challenge of coaching adults is that they have deeply ingrained habitual ways of doing things. You have to put in a great deal of conscious effort such as writing with your non-dominant hand. It can feel awkward at the beginning. Change can happen, however, you must be open to possibility and change to get the results you want. You have to unlearn bad habits to learn and apply new good habits. Changes do not have to be big to make an impact. Small shifts in habits can lead to big results. - Debra KasowskiClick To Tweet Discover What You Want. It can often be challenging for people to come up with what they want for their results and outcome. You certainly know what you don't want. Let's start there and explore what it is you truly want. What are results or outcomes do you not want? Make a list. Now, reframe your responses to what you DO want. For example, you don't want to feel tired and sluggish when you get up in the morning. What you really want is – to wake up well rested and energized for the day. By know what you do want, you can hit the ground running with developing night and morning routines that will get you excited and enthusiastic about your days. Pay Attention to Your Language. Do you catch yourself saying “I have to do this…or that…” with a feeling of resentment even though you know you need to do it? Saying this can catch you in a cycle of procrastination and frustration. Why not reframe your language, “I get to…”? You will find evidence for whatever your thinking. Choose the mind-set you want. You may not believe it, however, there are many things you “get to do” that many other people wish they could do and can not. Someone who is bedridden would love the opportunity to walk a dog or take out the trash if they could. Someone who is trying to conceive would love to play with a child of their own. Often, what we think is a chore or an obstacle to getting things done or requires some effort another person would be willing to do it if they had the chance. Because you have the opportunity, you get to! Make a Commitment. There is a difference between being interested in changing a habit and being committed to making a habit stick. If you are interested, chances are you will only do what you feel like doing when it is convenient for you. Whereas, the person who is committed, they will do what they need to do even when they do not feel like it because they are focused on the results and outcome they want to achieve. Focus on the Benefits. Reframe your habits by highlighting their rewards. By doing so, you make the habit more appealing! Let's say you get nervous or “have a case of the butterflies” when you are about to speak in front of a group of people. Reframe the nervousness into, “I am going to move my butterflies into a formation and use this energy to fuel my passion for the topic I am speaking on.” Shifting and reprogramming your thinking into the positive. Be Patient with Yourself. Changing a habit is one thing. Making it stick is another.

You can use the tactics in this book to make your ideas “sticky.” Sticky ideas are those that “are understood and remembered, and have a lasting impact – they change your audience’s opinion or behavior.” Sticky ideas have six traits. They are simple, unexpected, concrete, credible, emotional, and told as stories, and this summary covers the counterintuitive and well-researched tactics for transforming your ideas so that they stick. Learn why simple does not mean “dumbed down.” Understand how unexpected is more than a gimmicky surprise and the ways to not just capture but hold your audience’s interest. Hear about how making ideas concrete can help others collaborate on them rather than disengage. Find out how to load your messages with credibility without expert endorsement. Get others to care about your ideas by making them emotional, even for an audience that is far from sappy. And finally, get insight into the best way to tell a story so that others will be inspired to act.

To this day, Made To Stick remains a staple and masterclass in how a brand can (and should) tell a better story. From the massive success of that book to Switch (all about change) and then Decisive (all about how to make better choices)... their books are just so powerful. Most recently, I devoured their latest business book, The Power of Moments. Why do certain experiences have specific impact on our lives? How is it that an event that took place when we were a child could be a hardwired value set that we carry with us to this day? Is it all just chance and luck (nature) or is their an opportunity for us to create moments like this (nurture)? I had the pleasure of discussing this and much more with Dan Heath. Along with writing brilliant business books with his brother, Dan is also a Senior Fellow at Duke University's CASE center, which supports social entrepreneurs. At CASE, he founded the Change Academy, a program designed to boost the impact of social sector leaders. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 51:47. Hello from beautiful Montreal. We’ve all had that one idea or multiple ideas that we thought were going to change the world, and when we shared them with others, they thought we were out of our minds, and despite how awesome they were in hindsight, if we were just able to make them stick, we could have been successful. I remember during the early 2000s when dot-com days still had some traction. I had the idea to start up a free TV website called Tuby that would play TV and movies, not unlike how Hulu, Netflix, and cable on demand is now, and I would sell ads locally to small businesses. The concept of each computer having a local address attached to the internet connection called IP, was new to everyone, and it would revolutionize the quality of the ads, which was at the time dominated with Spammy banner ads and popups that would open 15 screens when you closed them. This would drive quality viewerships to ads just like how it is today on Youtube. But of course, I sucked at presenting my idea and couldn’t make it stick and it just went into my many piles of unsticky business feasibility studies. If only I had known the principles of why things stuck, presented by Bestselling authors Chip and Dan Heath in this book. I could have pitched it correctly, and who knows, it could have eventually become the platform we know today and use to consume video contents. The authors talk about the concept of the "Knowledge curse" as the main reason why ideas don't stick, Please allow me to read you an excerpt about this: "And that brings us to the villain of our book: The Curse of Knowledge. Lots of research in economics and psychology shows that when we know something, it becomes hard for us to imagine not knowing it. As a result, we become lousy communicators. Think of a lawyer who can't give you a straight, comprehensible answer to a legal question. His vast knowledge and experience render him unable to fathom how little you know. So when he talks to you, he talks in abstractions that you can't follow. And we're all like the lawyer in our own domain of expertise. Here's the great cruelty of the Curse of Knowledge: The better we get at generating great ideas--new insights and novel solutions--in our field of expertise, the more unnatural it becomes for us to communicate those ideas clearly. That's why knowledge is a curse. But notice we said "unnatural," not "impossible." Experts just need to devote a little time to apply the basic principles of stickiness.” So how do we overcome the Curse of Knowledge and make our ideas, or messages easier to recall? Chip and Dan present key strategies to defeat this and how we should present our ideas, with a mneomic, SUCCES (single S in the end) = Simple, Unexpected, Concrete, Credible, Emotional and Stories. In school, our teachers and professors filled us with formulas, tables, and theories, only for us to forget them. Even today, in my line of work, as a Leader in an organization charged with marketing and brand, I have to constantly communicate our ideas to the rest of the exec team, clients and others. This tells us that our ideas are only as good as the effectiveness of how we are able to communicate them and have others understand our concepts in order to buy in. Yesterday’s podcast, we talked about one of the 5 dysfunctions of a team, is the lack of buy-into our plans and strategies. This book helps us understand how to get our ideas to stick. Sticky is that idea that breaks through the noise and gets remembered, but more importantly, helps to shift attitudes and behavior towards us, our ideas and our organizations. Let's dive into the 6 strategies to help make our ideas stick.

"Everyone cooks, but not everyone's a chef. Everyone has an oven. Everyone has a camera." -Cris Duncan Long-time friend of The PhotoTellers, recurring guest, and even an occasional co-host, Mr. Cris Duncan returns for another episode. There are 3 ilks of Photographers who will especially profit from today's conversation: The Photographer looking to define his/her own photographic style. The Photographic instructor. The moderately-advanced Photographer who wants to grow beyond the technical aspects of exposure. How do you, Photographer, determine your own style? What are the pitfalls that derail your authentic voice? Once established, is your style static or dynamic? For the instructor, you'll appreciate Cris' comments about teaching, and how it "reveals mistakes in a different way." I encourage you, instructor, to remember Cris & Dee Duncan's mantra for teaching: Don't "marginalize the half." If you're not familiar with the term, you'll also learn how the "curse of knowledge" immediately ends communication. I mention the book MADE TO STICK. In my humble opinion, it's an important work for anyone who has a message to share, and wants to be certain that it cuts through the noise. For the advancing Photographer, tune in to hear Cris' definition of a PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER. Hint: "One who is proficient in their craft." You'll also hear the distinction between "proper exposure" and "correct exposure." They're not always the same. Here's an excerpt where Cris discusses the difference between proper exposure and correct exposure . . . . _______________ CRIS: We say that there's a big difference between a properly exposed image and a well-executed image. BILL: Okay; explain. CRIS: Proper exposures is just part of that execution . . . . I can get a proper exposure with my iPhone, driving, out of the car window. That's not necessarily a great, sale-able image for the client. I'm just getting good recording of highlight and shadow values. I think the next step is now using your your tools and other ingredients--lighting and composition and design--to put that dish [comparing the work of a chef and a photographer] together to create something. So now that you understand exposure, how can we alter the light direction and the light quality coming into the photograph to enhance the narrative that you're trying to tell with your image? So I think as Photographers that's huge! We get a chance to change the narrative. ________________ The super-cool photo of Cris on this post is from Yosemite, created by the illustrious Tony Corbell. If you haven't heard, Cris & his bride Deanna annually sojourn to Yosemite with a group of Photographers who want to reconnect with their love of the craft. This week Cut The Crap Podcast features the marketing book, 'Made to Stick." Some ideas are “stick-worthy” while others are not and the traditional advice to make ideas stick, such as knowing your audience, making eye contact, practice, and repetition, tends to have limited effectiveness. In Made to Stick, authors Chip and Dan Heath argue that people remember ideas that contain a simple, proverb-like message, are unexpected, are concrete in description, credible in nature, evoke emotion, or are presented as stories. These Six Principles of Sticky Ideas, compacted into the acronym SUCCESs, serve as a blueprint for making ideas and messages more effective and memorable. Even though that is a major part, there seems to have be a great disconnect between what is meant by a “God pleasing spirituality” as it relates to others and our connections with not only those who, “have it together,” but all who struggle.
