On this episode of Recurrent, Jaime Roque explores the hidden story of América Tropical, a mural painted by Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros in 1932 on Olvera Street, Los Angeles. Commissioned to depict an idyllic tropical scene, Siqueiros instead delivered a politically charged image featuring a crucified indigenous figure overshadowed by an American eagle, sparking immediate controversy and eventual censorship. Jaime interviews local historians and community members, delving into the mural’s impact on cultural identity and its role in inspiring the Chicano mural movement. As Jaime walks through Boyle Heights, he discusses the effects of gentrification and mural whitewashing with local poet and activist Viva Padilla, emphasizing the ongoing struggle to preserve cultural heritage. Reflecting on how public art serves as both a canvas for resistance and a means of education, Jaime and his guests explore the resilience of cultural memory in urban spaces. This episode not only uncovers the story of a censored artwork but also invites listeners to consider the broader implications of art in shaping and maintaining community identity.
In this episode Alin and Colby have a discussion with Sara Siquerios. Sara is the caregiver of all caregivers, as she cares for three children all of whom have had heart transplants. Sara shares their family's incredible story, how she handled having three children in the hospital at the same time, and what life looks like now with three immunocompromised kids. Hey friends, I have a show that I'd like to share with you today. It's right up my personal alley--so much so that I made a similarly-themed season of ArtCurious a few years back. Today it's a pleasure to introduce you to The Art of Crime. The Art of Crime is a history podcast about the unlikely collisions between true crime and the arts--created, written, and narrated by Gavin Whitehead. Gavin notes that he has had an interest in things criminal and artistic for as long as he can remember, and this podcast is the perfect intersection of those two fascinations. The show is now in its second season and is all about several artists who have committed, attempted, or at least been implicated in an assassination. This episode today is all about the painter David-Alfaro Siqueiros. A diehard Communist, Siqueiros fought in the Mexican Revolution in the mid-1910s. Over the next several decades, he would revolutionize the theory and practice of muralism in Mexico and abroad, largely inspired by his radical politics. In 1940, his political convictions led to a less honorable enterprise when he spearheaded an assault on the home of Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky as he and his family slept in their beds. Enjoy-- and I'll be back to you next week with an all-new episode of ArtCurious. Learn more about your ad choices.

Michele Siqueiros, President of the Campaign for College Opportunity, was interviewed for University Innovation Alliance on December 13, 2021. Co-host, Doug Lederman introduced the Campaign for College Opportunity as, “a non-profit based in California that does advocacy and research focused on ensuring more students can go to college and succeed through them.” The interview progressed from Siqueiros' personal story, to how the pandemic has impacted higher ed, and finally helpful advice. Being the daughter of immigrants, Siqueiros was the first in her family to go to college. As a low-income kid, she gave credit to school counselors, teachers, UCLA students who went to her high school and helped her fill out college applications, financial aid, affirmative action, and policies that helped her get into college and complete graduate school on a full-ride fellowship. She said, “it was a mix of what institutions were doing and the policies that were in place. I firmly believe that the policies we support, the way we set up student services, that's what helps make college a reality for those of us who aren't born into wealth and privilege.” Siqueiros has been with the Campaign since its founding in 2004 and has been leading the organization since 2008. She acknowledged, “the pandemic has been very difficult for all of us.” She sees the innovation and resourcefulness demonstrated in higher ed during the pandemic as transformative for underrepresented students. Michele gave an example of how flexibility and removal of hurdles in higher ed by providing laptops and higher broadband access for students without those resources was helpful for low-income students to be included in the System. She is hoping some of those innovations will stay in place by intentionally closing gaps that persist for Black and Latin students. Unfortunately, there has been a decline in graduation rates and college enrollment in community colleges of 20-30% since the COVID pandemic. When co-host Bridget Burns asked Siqueiros what she is most proud of, she said, “the elimination of placement into remedial courses at community colleges. Remedial courses are where college dreams go to die. That single policy change across the California Community College System has given incredible access to students and Black and Latino students.” Wrapping up the interview, Burns and Lederman asked her what advice she has received and what advice she gives to others. She mentioned how leaders and board members supported her and taught her, “it is only worth doing if it is hard and difficult.” Then she shared that letting go of staff members is hard and difficult, but humility and vulnerability helped her treat “everybody with the respect they deserve.” When talking to new leaders, she said, “I recommend they get comfortable not knowing everything” and that they don't have to do everything by themselves. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/innovationalliance/message
The Mexican writer Alfonso Reyes tells us the story of the military veteran Aranda who has lost his right hand in combat, but instead of burying it or disposing of it, he decides to dissect it and save it as memorabilia. To everyone's surprise, the hand comes to life. At first it disturbs them, then it is accepted as a member of the family, until it becomes an independent entity that seeks the meaning of its own existence. In the comments we talk about pets preserved as memorabilia, the latest news and the life of today's author.
Support the show (https://patreon.com/historiachiquita)

Hi, Scorekeepers! It's episode 6 of Minnesota Opera's THE SCORE! On this week's ep, Paige, Lee and Rocky are all vaxxed up and just in time it seems for the world to start opening up again. We'll talk about the huge impact this will have on the arts and live performance and, of course, our sanity. Next, we're joined by the lovely and talented Pablo Siqueiros, Associate Director of Public Programs at MN Opera. He'll talk about some of the lessons he's taking away from this crazy year and giving us all some insight into the exciting work coming out of MN Opera's Impact Department in the next few months. Then he joins us for the first installment of the brand new game show, FIRE THAT CANON! We're not sure if you've heard, but some of the more popular pieces in the operatic canon are a bit problematic. We take a look at three operas through the lens of civic dramaturgy and ask can we perform them responsibly or do we need to fire them out of a cannon!

In the 1920s, Los Tres Grandes--Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros--created murals throughout Mexico in an effort to reunify the country under the new Mexican Communist Party regime. After the 1929 stock market crash, the United States government commissioned these same men to paint murals that would lift the spirits of the American people and restore their faith in their capitalistic government. Problems ensued. Join our hosts as they unravel this artistic showdown between Communism and Capitalism.

What does "creative resilience" mean for curators in the year 2019? One evening, we decide to find out. Setting up a temporary recording studio in a poolside cabana, at a Miami Beach hotel, we sit down with a dozen curators and cultural producers to document their stories. In this marathon recording session, you’ll hear curatorial strategies for engaging new communities, increasing the visibility of underrepresented artists, and addressing some of today's most pressing social, political and environmental challenges. We recorded this special program when the annual Congress of the Association of International Curators of Contemporary Art (IKT) took place in the United States for the first time. Curators from the U.S., Europe and the Caribbean gathered in Miami, Florida, to explore the contemporary art scene and participate in a symposium about art and resilience in the climate crisis. This is the second in our series based on Rod Stoneman's book, Seeing is Believing: the Politics of the Visual. In the podcast, Rod analyses the subculture of graffiti and its social and political significance, using this Banksy graffito in Cleveland Street London W1 as his jumping off point. The podcast is produced and presented by Esther Gaytan Fuertes. Rod Stoneman: This image is a photograph taken in a central London street and it shows a graffito made by Banksy. The original starting point for street art and for graffiti —obviously there are precedents in ancient cultures in different times and different places, quite apart from Pompeii and Herculaneum and Greek cities in Western civilisations, it’s not just a phenomenon of the West, one could even look further afield to Mexico, where contemporary political graffiti stencilled in Oaxaca, for example, since in 2006 when there there was a teachers’ strike, connects with the mural painting of the 1920s and 30s when politicised painters worked on art that would be more open and accessible because it was painted on walls, Riviera and Siqueiros being two of the leading ones, and perhaps even there’s resonance before that in Mexico with other civilisations, the Mexica or the Mayan civilisations used highly coloured paint on some of their wall decoration. So its most current versions in the last fifty years, tagging and subway graffiti in New York and painting in the street in Los Angeles, have spread through to most cities in the world. Politicised use of graffiti is perhaps a narrower tradition but still an interesting development from, say, an Australian group in the seventies called with the marvellous title BUGA UP which was an acronym standing for Billboard Utilising Graffitists Against Unhealthy Promotions, and they devised kind of long poles that could be used to take a spray can 10 or 15 up a billboard to make modifications that changed it. May’68 in Paris was obviously an explosion of art in a very imaginative and engaged way. Perhaps one should also remember the troubles in Northern Ireland with the mural work that’s taken place there. So these different and diverse moments of politicised street art come through to contemporary subvertisement, as a neologism to talk about what the French situationists might have called détournement, taking an original image and changing it by word or visual modification. And they all show potential for counteraction, potential for an alternative and indeed more democratic two-way communication. There is a word for communication studies that is, the phatic, which is about opening a channel of communication where you pick up a phone and say, ‘are you there?’ and ‘yes, I can hear you’ and that’s the beginning of a conversation. That’s perhaps the most hopeful and optimistic dimension of graffiti in its various forms at the moment that suggests that the visual landscape that we encounter in cities does not have to be dominated —well, after architecture— by publicity and advertising, that actually artists and young people more generally can make visual material which has the power to make people think, reconsider, change and respond a more open process. If you want to know more about the politics of the visual, here is another in the series - Seeing is Believing 1: The language of fashion Seeing is Believing: The politics of the visual is published by Black Dog (UK £19.95, US £29.95) It explores the complex and reciprocal dynamic between world and image in this most visually mediated society. Everyone ‘knows’ images can be false or deceptive, but we all live and work in constant denial of this idea and its implications. In a world saturatedwith media we act as though we are immune to their effects.Structured in six parts “History/Politics”; “Art/Culture”; “Film/Television”; “Products/Possessions”; “The Quotidian/The Strange”; “Verisimilitude/Delusion”—the book analyses clusters of images to explore d...
David Alfaro Siquieros is known as one of “Los Tres Grandes” the three major Mexican muralists who depicted and helped define national and international images of post-revolutionary Mexico. In 1932, after having served prison time for his political views, Siquieros came to Los Angeles to work. The artist had mastered an outdoor mural technique with a workers’ rights painting at the Choinard Art School. That piece, called “Street Meeting” was painted over, white washed for its socialist content. Shortly thereafter, Siquieros was commissioned by patron of the arts F.K Firenz and wealthy city booster Christine Sterling to paint a mural on a beer garden wall above the Italian Hall at Olvera Street. That mural -titled America Tropical- figures prominently in Los Angeles art history, in no small part because it was whitewashed shortly after it was completed. America Tropical sits at the center of an exhibition currently on display at the Autry Musuem called Siquieros in Los Angeles: Censorship Defied. Hear in the City host, Sara Harris took a tour with the curators of the show, Lynn Labate and Luis C. Garza to talk about the circumstances around the creating and subsequent covering up of that mural.
