Giles Duley is many things , photographer, humanitarian activist and chef, connector and defiant Bon viveur. I knew he had a huge following on his Ted Talks, but wasn't expecting such visceral story-telling.  The real story is so incredible it's almost hard for the imagination to go to that place. Remember  lockdown? And  how hard the curtailed freedoms were for so many of us to swallow?  Now imagine that you are incarcerated in your lumpen body, missing both legs and arm. Imagine you've lost all use of your senses and even the ability to communicate with the nurses and your family gathering around the hospital bed  to let them know you are sentient, kind of alive? . How Duley doesn't lose his mind is the story that had me shaking my head in wonder.  His  battles with depression and addiction , his belief in the power of care and kindness, is nothing less that awe-inspiring.  Find the footnotes here. Follow Catherine Fairweather on Instagram. Follow the Frontline Club to support independent journalism.

In this episode with collage artist Jonathan Conda, we got really deep and quick.  We discussed the power of history and the nuance of storytelling along with  how history is incredibly limited as a form of truth telling.  We talked about bias and how that plays into what histories we remember and which ones we forget.  We also had a deep discussion around identity politics , social media, and why art is a necessary tool to penetrate down to the human spirit.  We discussed Jonathans creative process and how he sources the imagery in his incredible collage work.  We even talk about AI, technology, and how that is impacting art making.  --------------------- From Jonathan's Website: Hi, my name is Jonathan Conda. I create future nostalgia (ok, you might say it's just collage art) as The Quiet Fight. My work, while remaining politically neutral, seeks to challenge our feelings around culture, history and global citizenship. I try to elevate those who are ignored, forgotten or dehumanized. There's beauty in all of us, if we're willing to see it. Within my ~8 year professional art practice, I've created published editorial works (Noema Magazine, Atlas Obscura), podcast art (Pineapple St. Studios: The 11th, Radiotopia: Oprahdemics) and album artwork ( Ben Harper, “We Need to Talk About It”, Jaimi Faulkner, “Allen Keys & Broken Bits” ). From taking photographs and traveling the world with the likes of Oasis and Miriah Carey to showing war at its worst as photojournalist, Giles Duley has seen more than many of us but after stepping on an explosive device, an IED, during a visit to Afghanistan in 2011 he has experienced more than most of us too. The explosion left Giles a triple amputee, losing both his legs and an arm yet he returned to Afghanista in 2012 to continue his work. Since then he has continued to work as a photographer and set up the NGO Legacy of War Foundation, an international charity supporting communities and individuals as the rebuild their lives after conflict. He is a campaigner for the rights of both refugees and those living with disability. This is an episode I've been looking forward to sharing with you for quite some time now and it still shatters my mind that it's happened. Giles Duley is a photographer, writer, CEO, presenter, and cook; who for over a decade has traveled the world photographing people within conflict zones. In 2011, he suffered a grave injury by an IED, causing Giles to lose both of his legs and left arm. Where such an experience would understandably be a bookend for some, it was the exact opposite for Giles. It reignited his passion for photography not as a career but as a function of storytelling. This episode is about the long road it took for Giles to arrive at this point of being a well-respected and award-winning photographer (Giles is a recipient of the May Chidiac Award for Bravery in Journalism, the AIB Founders Award for Outstanding Achievement, AND the prestigious Amnesty Media Award for Photojournalism). Together we delve into the journey Giles went on from being an entertainment photographer to a photographer in conflict zones across Iraq, Afghanistan, South Sudan, DR Congo, and Ukraine. Along with the need to re-contextualize purpose, community, career, success, and truly…the importance of recontextualizing life in general. Giles Duley used to live the rock'n'roll life of a fashion photographer, but now travels the world's war zones documenting the lives of those caught up in conflict. He stepped on a landmine while working in Afghanistan and lost three of his limbs, and very nearly his life. This is his story.   “It was a miracle I survived that day. I was just lucky, it just wasn't my day to go.”   Incredibly fortunate to be alive, few of Giles' family and friends believed that he would work again after the accident. But he knew otherwise. Photographing Syrian refugees for UNHCR on the Greek islands, he found his way back into life and work. In this special bitesize episode, Giles Duley reflects on his drive to help others, tell life-changing stories, and on finding the strength to return from rock bottom.

Olsen has today unveiled a brand new world cruise for 2024 celebrating the magical music of The Beatles – including a specially-commissioned yellow submarine to offer tours to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.Fred. Olsen's Journey Planners have come together to hand-craft an itinerary that follows – as closely as possible – in the footsteps of The Beatles when they embarked on their 1964 World Tour, with a call into Copenhagen to mark 60 years since the opening night in the city.More than just day trippers, our guests will find ‘newspaper taxis' waiting ashore to take them on tours to many of the venues played by The Beatles during the famous tour. In addition, in Australia guests will be able to purchase a ticket to ride aboard Fred. Olsen's new submarine – of course, painted yellow and aptly named SS Penny Lane – to witness the Great Barrier Reef.On board, guests will find their very own Cavern Club where they can dance the night away to their favourite Beatles songs, and also a special ‘hill' out on deck – built from Norwegian wood from our homeland – where guests can sit and enjoy scenic sailings and sunsets. The cruise is a celebration of Fred. Olsen's long-standing links to Liverpool, with new ship Borealis homeporting from the city for another year in 2022. The ship will berth almost opposite the statue of the ‘Fab Four' at The Beatles Pier Head. And more... Each series explores the limits of femininity and masculinity, spirituality and beauty and our relationship with nature and understanding a sense of self in the world we live in. Àsìkò's visual aesthetic comes with adornment and choreographed movement, juxtaposed with atmospheric locations, symbolism and a distinct seductive charge. Personal stories inspired by Massive Attack's breakthrough single. Featuring the vocals of Shara Nelson, the track together with its iconic video would help catapult this band from Bristol onto the global stage. Stories include the photographer Giles Duley whose work was displayed during the song at the band's 2016 homecoming show in Bristol. Mountaineer Dmitry Golovchenko who named an attempt on the Nepalese mountain of Jannu after the track, and solicitor Marti Burgess who saw early sets from The Wild Bunch, the collective from which Massive Attack emerged, and for whom 'Unfinished Sympathy' helped crystallise her identity. Music Producer Ski Oakenfull deconstructs the track, peeling back the layers of beats, bells and samples. Belgian singer Liz Aku recorded a version of the track during lockdown, bringing back memories of her first love. Melissa Chemam, author of 'Massive Attack Out Of The Comfort Zone' explains the origins of Massive Attack, how 'Unfinished Sympathy' was written and why, when the track was released in 1991, the band had to drop the word 'Attack' from their name. A radio producer and DJ who spent New Year's Eve in a detox centre in London was asked to pick the tune to be played at midnight, and she chose 'Unfinished Sympathy'. In this episode of Social Founder Stories you'll hear how throughout his life, Giles has responded to adversity to create impact, but in particular, how stepping on an IED in Afghanistan, left him desperately fighting for his life for 47 days in intensive care, and then 18 months' rehabilitation, after the loss of both legs and his left arm.No-one expected him to survive those horrendous injuries, let alone to find the drive to continue to work and to travel, using his professional skills and his determination to create high-level positive social impact, setting up and growing his Foundation.Giles talks in-depth about the work of international NGOs, the power of photography to create impact, and his work in Syria, Africa, Cambodia and Afghanistan, woven into his personal journey leading to his founding of the Legacy of War Foundation, his gruelling recovery from his injuries in 2011, his learnings and values. You will hear little from me in this interview. Prepare yourself for what is definitely one of the most amazing conversations that I've ever had. You might want to take notes during this episode, I felt like I did whilst Giles spoke these words to me. I wanted to remember every word that left his mouth...My guest this week is Giles Duley. Giles describes himself as an anti-war photographer, documenting humanity, love and connection in conflict zones all over the world. After years of working as a photographer in fashion and music, he realised he was not fulfilled in his purpose as a photographer, and set up Legacy of War (http://legacyofwar.com/), a photo project to connect people experiencing the impact of war. Very soon after, Giles stood on a landmine whilst photographing soldiers in Afghanistan, losing both legs and his left arm. Giles's own body became part of the story that he had set out to tell... the impact of war on innocent people. In this episode Giles shares  stories of the people he has met along the way, and the impact that they have had on his life. Listen out for Olive in Rwanda, Khouloud in Lebanon, Dawood in Mosul and more. Legacy of War has gone on to become a charitable foundation (https://www.legacyofwarfoundation.com/) which now not only shares people's stories, but changes the direction of them for the better.I'm so excited to hear your thoughts on this episode and I hope that this is the first of more that we record together because Giles has so many important stories and so much wisdom to share.Support the show (https://www.justgiving.com/prism-worldwidetribe)Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/asylum-speakers-podcast-with-jaz-ohara-stories-of-migration. Between Us: Stories of Unconscious Bias

"I was injured in 2011 while working in Afghanistan. I stepped on a landmine and lost my legs and my arm. I was 39 years old when that happened. And I went from being a white, privileged, middle class English man who travelled the world who had a very privileged position( and I was aware of that) to somebody who's living with a very serious disability. And it was interesting because I suddenly saw how the world treated me differently." Giles Duley is a documentary photographer and storyteller, whose work focuses on the long term impact of conflict. Giles is also the CEO of the charity, Legacy of War foundation. https://www.legacyofwarfoundation.com/

“I don’t give voice to anyone, but I have a really amazing tool and that’s my camera. I use my camera to amplify the voices of people who feel unheard.” Today photographer Giles Duley is the CEO and founder of the Legacy of War Foundation, and an activist for the rights of those living with disabilities caused by conflict. But he started out working in music and fashion, shooting for magazines like Vogue, GQ and Arena. Since 2004, his portrait photography has taken him all over the world, from Iraq and Jordan to South Sudan and Angola, documenting human stories, often in post-conflict zones or crisis situations. In 2015 he was commissioned by UNHCR to document the refugee crisis across the middle east and Europe.  In 2011, while working as a photographer in Afghanistan, Giles himself was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). He is now a triple-amputee. He was back taking photographs the following year. The legacy of war is violent and harrowing. Be warned, some of the stories Giles tells are graphic. And yet, this interview is full of warmth, laughter and mostly importantly hope and humanity. Have you listened to Part 1? Don't miss the related Episode 121 on Article 22 in Laos. Duley was as a successful fashion and music photographer for ten years during the nineties, working for such publications as GQ, Vogue, Esquire, Arena and Select Magazine. However, having become disillusioned with celebrity culture, he decided to abandon photography and left London to begin work as a full-time carer. In 2005, he returned to photography, personally funding trips to document the work of NGOs focusing on the stories of those affected by conflict across the world. He photographed the work of charities such as the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), EMERGENCY, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and documenting the lives and stories of people whom he describes as “not victims but victims of circumstance.” In 2011, whilst working in Afghanistan, Duley was to “become the story” after he stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), losing both his legs and left arm. He was told he would never walk again and that his career was over. However, characteristically stubborn, Duley told his doctors “I’m still a photographer”, and returned to work less than 18 months later. His first project, In October 2012, took him back to Afghanistan to complete his original assignment. His return was the feature of documentary, Walking Wounded: Return to the Frontline, which has since won the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) Award for Best International Current Affairs Documentary (2013) and the Foreign Press Association (FPA) Award for TV Documentary Story of the Year (2013). Duley was also awarded the Women on the Move media award for his work highlighting the plight of Syrian refugees in Lebanon. In 2017 Major Leoluca Orlando made him an honorary citizen of Palermo for his work with refugees. He is best known for his project Legacy of War that documents the long-term impact of conflict. This project has led to numerous collaborations including with the musicians PJ Harvey and Massive Attack. What happens to a country and its people once a war is over? Giles Duley has been asking this question for over 10 years in his career as a photojournalist.  In the podcast, Giles talks to Jonathan Heaf of British GQ, and recounts more than a handful of incredible stories.  You can show your support by purchasing an exclusive Legacy of War tee created by Citizens of Humanity, available in-store on 2, with all proceeds going to the project.

A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Throughout the 90's, Giles Duley, worked as a successful fashion and music photographer for ten years. However, having become disillusioned with celebrity culture, he decided to abandon photography and left London, worked in a pub and eventually began work as a full-time carer. It was in this role that he rediscovered his craft and its power to tell the stories of those without a voice. In 2000, he returned to photography, personally funding trips to document the work of NGOs and the stories of those affected by conflict across the world. In 2011, Giles lost both legs and his left arm after stepping on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Afghanistan whilst on a routine patrol with troops from the 1st Squadron of the 75th Cavalry Regiment of the U..S. Army. Very few people exppected him to live. And when he did he was told he would never walk again and that his career was over. However, characteristically stubborn, Duley told his doctors “I’m still a photographer”, and returned to work in Afghanistan less than 18 months later, after a long and arduous process of rehabilitation involving continuous operations, over 30 in all. Giles has since documented stories in Lebanon, Bangladesh, Colombia, Iraq and Jordan amongst others. His return to Afghanistan was the feature of the award-winning documentary, Walking Wounded: Return to the Frontline. His work has since been featured in numerous newspapers and magazines, and he has talked about his experiences on television, radio and at several international and national events. His TEDx talk was voted one of the top ten TED talks of 2012. Giles is a Trustee for the Italian NGO Emergency and ambassador for Sir Bobby Charlton’s landmine charity Find A Better Way. In 2013, he won the May Chidiac Award for Bravery in Journalism and the AIB Founders Award for Outstanding Achievement, and was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. In 2016 he was commissioned by the UNHCR to document the refugee crisis across Europe and the Middle East, the result of which was the book I Can Only Tell You What My Eyes See. By June 2017 Gile had already travelled to over a dozen countries in the continuation of his project Legacy of War, a five year undertaking exploring the long-term, global effects of conflict which Giles sees as his defining work to date. GILES HAS A SOLO EXHIBITION (AND SUPPER CLUB!) ON NOW - OCT 4TH TO OCT 15TH - AT THE OLD TRUMAN BREWERY IN LONDON. DETAILS HERE. “You know, you spend a year in hospital, you lose a year of your life, you think you may never walk again, you may never even step out in the sunshine again. When everything’s taken away from you, what you get given back feels more precious than ever. And so all those things that we take for granted, the simple things in life, meant everything. And for me photography is in my core…”

Twelve years ago photographer Giles Duley abandoned the world of celebrity and fashion photography to focus on stories of human suffering - he was in Afghanistan in 2011 when a landmine blew off both of his legs and an arm. Since then he has defied the odds, not just surviving but returning to work, even revisiting Afghanistan. He is still a photographer, but does he see the world through a different lens?
