While we may think of the German band the Scorpions as an 80's metal band, they started much earlier - way back in 1965.  Things didn't really come together for the group until the 1978-1992 personnel lineup of Klaus Meine on lead vocals, Rudolph Schenker on rhythm guitar, Mattias Jabs on lead guitar, Francis Buchholz on bass, and Herman Rarebell on percussion.  By the time that the live album entitled World Wide Live came out in 1985, the group had established itself as an international commercial success.Recorded during their 1984 world tour, "World Wide Live" showcases the band at their best, and is a testament to their skill as live performers.  The album was produced by Dieter Dierks, and was initially released as a 2-LP vinyl set, a cassette, and a VHS of tour footage showing off the band's stage presence.  Folks, you got your money's worth when you originally purchased this album!From the high intensity of rockers like "Big City Nights" and "Rock You Like a Hurricane," to the raw emotion of ballads like "Still Loving You," the Scorpions deliver a performance that connects with their audience.  Hearing the live versions gives you a sense of the band in a way that is hard to capture from the studio arrangements.Lynch leads this journey back to 1985, when the Scorpions were rocking the world like a...well...they were rocking the world. Big City NightsThis song from "Love at First Sting" leads off side two of the first LP.  Schenker and Meine composed this one, as they did with many Scorpions songs.  This homage to night life in the city was released as the third single from their studio album, but failed to chart.No One Like YouOriginally appearing on their 1982 album, "Blackout,"  this track deals with infatuation and desire.  Despite its only reaching number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100, it is one of the songs that established the Scorpions as premiere hard rockers of the 80's.Still Loving YouLong before the hair metal ballad became a trope, the Scorpions demonstrated their ability to handle a slower song while still maintaining intensity and raw emotion.  The lyrics are of a guy struggling to convince the girl he has lost to give their love a second chance.Rock You Like a HurricaneThe Scorpions' signature song first appeared on "Love at First Sting" the year before this live album was released.  It reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, a rare Scorpions song to break the top 40.  The track leads off side three of the album.  The risqué video would be a prime exhibit of the PMRC in their quest for more parental control over child access to music videos. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Crazy by Patsy ClineA film called "Sweet Dreams" chronicles the life of country music star Patsy Cline, and was in American theaters in this month. STAFF PICKS:Whole of the Moon by The WaterboysWayne gets the staff picks started this week with the best-selling song from an overlooked British-Irish rock-folk band.  Cerebral and artsy, with lyrics like "I saw the crescent, you saw the whole of the moon," the song is about individuals with rare depth.  The Waterboys reformed in 2000, and can still be seen touring, primarily in Europe.Lay Your Hands On Me by The Thompson TwinsRob brings us a song from the British group that has neither members named Thompson nor twins.  It went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Thompson Twins member Tom Bailey has said that the song takes religious ritual as a metaphor for the connection between artist, performer, and artist.It's Only Love by Bryan Adams and Tina TurnerBruce's staff pick is the sixth and final single from Adam's amazingly popular album "Reckless," and also appears on Turner's "Tina Live in Europe" released in 1988.  Loaded with melancholy and anger from a breakup, the song encourages the jilted lover to remember - it's only love.  This song went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.Money for Nothing by Dire StraitsLynch features a signature song from Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits, with a strong helping of Sting to boot.  This Grammy Award-winning track was a staple of MTV, and spent three weeks atop the US pop charts.  The lyrics are a conversation between two working-class men as they watch music videos. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Tears In a Prophet's Dream by Celtic FrostThis Swiss heavy metal bands instrumental takes us out for this week's podcast. Mit "Love at First Sting" haben die Scorpions 1984 den internationalen Durchbruch geschafft. 2024 gehen die Weltstars aus Hannover anlässlich dieses 40-jährigen Album-Jubiläums erneut auf Tour. Allein bis zum Jahr 2001 hat sich "Love at First Sting" bereits über 6 Millionen Mal verkauft. Neben der Schmusepower-Ballade "Still Loving You" sind auch echte Rock-Klassiker darauf vertreten, wie zum Beispiel "Big City Nights" oder "Rock You Like a Hurricane". Produktion von "Love at First Sting" Für die Produktion des Albums "Love at First Sting" waren die Scorpions in eine Villa nach Frankreich gefahren. Plötzlich verliert Sänger Klaus Meine seine Stimme – es folgt eine schwere, ungewisse Zeit für die Band. Die ganzen Aufnahmen mussten verschoben werden und Meine konnte damals nur auf Zettelchen schreiben, um sich mit seinen Bandkollegen zu besprechen. Doch die Band hält zusammen – und als Klaus Meine nach langwierigen Therapien und zwei Operationen an den Stimmbändern zurückkam, war er stimmlich sogar besser als zuvor. Sein Stimmvolumen hatte sich durch die Operationen erweitert! Es folgte eine internationale Tour durch Europa, die USA, Kanada und Japan. Die Scorpions spielten in den USA unter anderem mit Größen wie Iron Maiden. Nach der Tour 1983 ging es für die Band zur Produktion des Albums in die berühmten Polar Studios in Stockholm, auch bekannt als ABBAs kreative Heimat. Dann wurden allerdings Herman Rarebell und Francis Buchholz krank und auch Klaus Meine hatte Einwände für die Produktion vor Ort. So wurde die Platte schließlich im Dieter Dierks Studio in Stommeln bei Köln in Originalbesetzung aufgenommen. Mit "Love at First Sting" sind die Scorpions auf dem internationalen Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere, touren monatelang mit Größen wie Def Leppard oder Bon Jovi im Vorprogramm. Als erste und einzige deutsche Rockband bis dahin spielten sie dreimal hintereinander im ausverkauften Madison Square Garden und 1985 vor fast 500.000 Menschen bei Rock in Rio. Musikproduzent und Entdecker der Scorpions: Dieter Dierks Der legendäre Musikproduzent Dieter Dierks hatte schon damals diesen berühmten Riecher für Talente. Die Scorpions entdeckte er zufällig in Essen in einer Turnhalle, vor einem kleinen Publikum mit etwa 50 Leuten. Er war sofort begeistert von ihrem Bühneneinsatz und nahm sie unter Vertrag. Dierks prägte die deutsche Rocklandschaft in den 70ern, vor allem die Größen der Krautrock-Szene waren bei ihm zu Gast im Studio, von Birth Control, über Guru Guru bis hin zu Embryo und Amon Düül. "Rock You Like a Hurricane" Vor allem ein Song wird zum absoluten Durchbruch: "Rock You Like a Hurricane". Seit seiner Erscheinung wird er immer wieder in Kinofilmen, Serien oder auch in der Werbung genutzt — "er ist omnipräsent und gehört sozusagen zum Kulturgut", so SWR1 Musikredakteur Niels Berkefeld. Neben "Wind of Change", der Hymne der Wende, ist "Rock You Like a Hurricane" die bekannteste Rock-Nummer der Scorpions und wurde bei jedem Konzert gespielt. Hannover als Homebase der Scorpions Hannover ist die Heimatstadt der Scorpions und auch für die Musikszene eine wichtige Stadt. Fury in the Slaughterhouse, Lena Meyer-Landrut, Mousse T. und viele mehr stammen ursprünglich aus der Hauptstadt Niedersachsens. Mit steigendem Erfolg in den Achtzigern haben die Scorpions zwar darüber nachgedacht, in die USA überzusiedeln, haben sich dann aber doch für einen kleinen Vorort von Hannover entschieden und das nie bereut. Su grabación tuvo lugar el 24 y 27 de abril de 1978 en el salón de conciertos del hotel Nakano Sun Plaza de Tokio, en el marco de la gira Taken by Force Tour (1977-1978). Es el último registro del guitarrista Uli Jon Roth, ya que luego de los conciertos por Japón renunció a la banda para iniciar una carrera solista. Recibió críticas favorables por parte de la prensa especializada. Además de un positivo recibimiento comercial en algunos países europeos, sobre todo en Francia, en donde la Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique (SNEP) lo certificó con disco de oro. En 2015, con motivos de la celebración del cincuenta aniversario de Scorpions, el disco se remasterizó con un segundo disco compacto adicional que incluyó siete canciones en vivo, entre ellas «Hell Cat», «Catch Your Train» y «Kimigayo». Hacia la segunda mitad de los años 1970 Scorpions alcanzó una importante popularidad en Japón, ya que sus álbumes Virgin Killer (1976) y Taken by Force (1977) lograron la certificación de disco de oro.​​ Por ese motivo, para abril de 1978 se agendaron los primeros conciertos por ese país en el marco de la gira Taken by Force Tour (1977-1978).​ De acuerdo con el vocalista Klaus Meine, una vez que llegaron a Tokio recibieron una increíble bienvenida a tal punto que por primera vez se sintieron como una banda internacional.​ En ese mismo sentido, el batería Herman Rarebell contó que vivieron una especie de beatlemanía y que al fin se dieron cuenta de lo que era ser una estrella de rock.​ Por otro lado, antes de que Taken by Force saliera a la venta, el guitarrista Uli Jon Roth consideró renunciar a la banda para iniciar una carrera solista, pero continuó en beneficio de la gira promocional. En una entrevista en 2006 se le consultó si había algún problema con el resto del grupo y señaló que: «No, no, no teníamos ningún problema en la banda, hubo algunos desacuerdos en las letras y esas cosas, yo no estaba contento con algunas de las canciones en ese momento, pero seguimos adelante y fue de buena camadería».​ Al final, Klaus lo convenció de participar en el disco para, en cierto modo, celebrar el «fin de una era».​ La gira por Japón constaba de cinco presentaciones: tres en Tokio (23, 24 y 27 de abril), una en Nagoya (25 de abril) y otra en Osaka (26 de abril), las cuales comenzaron a las 19:00 horas y no contaban con teloneros.​​ La grabación del álbum se realizó en las dos últimas fechas en Tokio, en el salón de conciertos del hotel Nakano Sun Plaza.​ Para Uli Jon Roth el primer concierto en la capital japonesa (23 de abril) fue el mejor, inclusive mencionó: «Todo fue correcto esa noche, nunca en esos cinco años tuvimos un show como ese».​ Lamentablemente, dicha presentación no se registró.​ Tokyo Tapes posee temas de todas las producciones de estudio publicadas por la banda hasta ese momento, como también cuatro pistas inéditas.​ La primera de ellas fue «All Night Long», la que empleaban como la canción de apertura de sus conciertos hace años pero que no se había grabado con anterioridad en un disco, ya que Uli no la consideraba lo suficientemente fuerte para ser un tema de estudio.​​ También se incluyeron unas versiones de las rocanroleras «Hound Dog» y «Long Tall Sally».​ Mientras que, solo para estos conciertos, agregaron la canción tradicional japonesa «Kōjō no Tsuki». Según Klaus Meine, antes de viajar a Japón, se contactó con el club de fanes y les sugirió que le buscaran un tema de su cultura para cantar con el público. Con la ayuda de un casete, una profesora de idiomas de Hannover y con el incentivo de su esposa Gabi, Klaus aprendió la letra y su pronunciación. Sin embargo, no le avisó al resto de la banda hasta que llegaron al país asiático, por ende Uli tuvo que realizar la musicalización en el escenario para que fuera una canción de heavy rock.​ Si bien no hubo posteriores sobregrabaciones al sonido de la banda, se tuvo que recurrir a una «pequeña sucia idea» para corregir un problema con el registro del ambiente del público. En abril de 2019, Uli Jon Roth aseguró que los ingenieros japoneses registraron los preajustes con un ecualizador y que una vez que se interponían con las palabras de Klaus el público no sonaba bien ni tampoco se podía modificar. Por ese motivo, tuvieron que utilizar el ambiente del álbum Frampton Comes Alive! de Peter Frampton en un loop para corregir el error. En palabras del guitarrista: «Así que el público de Frampton Comes Alive! está en Tokyo Tapes de Scorpions. Tuvimos una gran audiencia pero no fue grabada».​ Tokyo Tapes salió a la venta el 15 de agosto de 1978 por el sello RCA.​ En septiembre del mismo año obtuvo el puesto 35 en el Media Control Charts de Alemania, que lo convierte en la primera producción de la banda en ingresar en la lista musical de su país.​ El 6 de octubre de 1978 debutó en el Sverigetopplistan de Suecia en la posición 42, mientras que en Japón alcanzó el lugar 51 en el conteo de Oricon.​​ Por su parte, en Francia logró la posición 14 y en 1981 la Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique (SNEP) lo certificó con disco de oro, luego de vender más de 100 000 copias en ese país.​​ En 2015, con la remasterización llamada Tokyo Tapes 50th Anniversary, nuevamente ingresó en las listas alemana, japonesa y francesa, como también llegó hasta el puesto 165 en el Ultratop de Bélgica.​​​​ Por otro lado, en agosto de 1978 se publicó el sencillo «All Night Long» en formato EP, que incluía cuatro de las canciones del disco: «All Night Long», «Fly to the Rainbow», «Speedy's Coming» e «In Trance».​ La carátula original mostraba al guitarrista Rudolf Schenker echado hacia atrás y con el bajista Francis Buchholz dando la espalda a la cámara. La fotografía la tomó el alemán Hans G. Lehmann, quien estuvo a cargo de retratar tanto el viaje a Japón como las presentaciones en vivo. De acuerdo con Klaus Meine querían colocar en la portada una fotografía de la banda tomada directamente de los conciertos y sin una postura ensayada previamente. No obstante, en Japón se reemplazó por una imagen de un escorpión en una rosa roja y con un fondo negro detrás.​ Por motivos de la celebración del 50° aniversario de la banda, el 6 de noviembre de 2015 se relanzó con el título de Tokyo Tapes 50th Anniversary. Esta reedición incluyó un segundo disco compacto con canciones en vivo, las cuales también provienen de las presentaciones japonesas. De los siete temas agregados destacaron «Hell Cat», «Catch Your Train» y «Kimigayo» —himno nacional japonés— ya que fueron descartados para la publicación original.​ Tokyo Tapes recibió generalmente reseñas positivas por parte de la crítica especializada. Eduardo Rivadavia de Allmusic lo nombró como «una colección ideal de grandes éxitos de la primera década de Scorpions» y que proporciona la introducción perfecta al material inicial de la banda. Además, destacó la «espectacular ejecución» de Uli Jon Roth, pero criticó su «terrible canto» como también las canciones «Hound Dog» y «Long Tall Sally» a las cuales consideró como «versiones sin sentido».​ Scott Hudson de la revista en línea PopMatters tuvo una opinión similar con respecto a los temas de rock and roll y a la voz de Uli; aunque resaltó su técnica como guitarrista, sobre todo en «We'll Burn the Sky» y «Fly to the Rainbow». Asimismo, mencionó que: «Para la mayoría, Tokyo Tapes sirve como un puente entre el pasado y el futuro de Scorpions, de lo que fue y de lo que sería» y que «es un disco en vivo tan brillante y entretenido como nunca lo oirás».​ La revista alemana Rock Hard indicó que el disco es la mejor prueba para expresar el dicho de que «nadie es profeta en su propia tierra». Además han recibido varios premios y condecoraciones, que los convierte en la banda de rock más exitosa de Alemania.En sus inicios se denominaban Nameless —los sin nombre, en español— luego cambiaron a The Scorpions, y finalmente a fines de 1969 decidieron denominarse simplemente Scorpions. Su primera producción discográfica fue Lonesome Crow de 1972, con Klaus Meine en la voz, Rudolf Schenker y Michael Schenker en las guitarras, Lothar Heimberg en el bajo y Wolfgang Dziony en la batería. Sin embargo y durante su gira promocional, Michael anunció su retiro de la banda para unirse a los británicos UFO, que provocó una breve ruptura en 1973. A mediados del mismo año, Rudolf y Klaus reformaron la banda con algunos integrantes de Dawn Road, entre ellos Uli Jon Roth y Francis Buchholz, con los cuales publicaron los álbumes Fly to the Rainbow, In Trance, Virgin Killer y Taken by Force, con los que obtuvieron gran reconocimiento en Europa y Japón.En 1978 lanzaron su primer disco en vivo, Tokyo Tapes, que fue el último con Roth ya que renunció al grupo para iniciar su carrera como solista. Al año siguiente ingresó Matthias Jabs, con quien iniciaron el camino hacia el mercado estadounidense con Lovedrive, que contó además con la participación de Michael Schenker en tres de sus canciones. Durante los ochenta y con Animal Magnetism, Blackout, Love at First Sting y Savage Amusement obtuvieron un gran éxito comercial en gran parte del mundo, ubicándose en los primeros puestos de las listas musicales y logrando varios discos de oro y de platino..Con la llegada de los años noventa publicaron Crazy World, que contenía el tema «Wind of Change», que se convertiría en un ícono de las revoluciones políticas-sociales que vivía el mundo por aquel entonces. En 1993 pusieron a la venta Face the Heat, el primer trabajo con el bajista Ralph Rieckermann que entró en reemplazo de Francis, que salió de la banda a mediados de 1992. En la última parte de la década publicaron Pure Instinct y Eye II Eye, con James Kottak como nuevo baterista en reemplazo de Herman Rarebell, que demostraron un sonido renovado con toques más suaves y electrónicos —sobre todo en el último mencionado— y que trajo consigo una serie de críticas de la prensa especializada y de sus propios fanáticos. Durante el primer decenio del nuevo milenio, publicaron el proyecto sinfónico Moment of Glory y el unplugged Acoustica, que los volvió a posicionar en las listas musicales. Más tarde con Unbreakable y Humanity: Hour I, que fueron los primeros con el bajista polaco Pawe? Además y a lo largo de sus cincuenta años, sus álbumes han sido certificados con más de treinta y cinco discos de platino y con más de cien discos de oro.

Live Insurrection es el primer álbum en vivo de la banda Inglesa-estadounidense de heavy metal Halford, publicado en 2001 por Metal God Entertainment. Su grabación se llevó a cabo en la gira promocional de Resurrection entre 2000 y 2001, e incluye canciones de su primer álbum de estudio con Halford y algunos temas de Judas Priest y Fight. Por otro lado, en la portada figura Rob Halford besando la bandera de Chile. En Japón se publicó el 27 de marzo de 2001 y contó con una pista adicional, una versión en vivo de «Blackout» de Scorpions, grabada con la participación especial del guitarrista rítmico Rudolf Schenker. Además, el disco incluye las canciones de estudio «Screaming in the Dark» —que no había sido publicada en ninguna producción anteriormente— «Heart of a Lion» y «Prisoner of Your Eyes», estas últimas fueron escritas en la década de los ochenta por Judas Priest y que hasta entonces figuraron en el disco Second Heat de Racer X y en la versión remasterizada de Screaming for Vengeance, respectivamente.
