Today's guest is Dr. Larry Senn, PhD, a pioneer in the field of corporate culture. He founded Senn Delaney as a culture shaping firm back in 1978, based on his principle that organizations become shadows of their leaders. Larry works with CEO teams and organizations from top to bottom to create the behaviors needed to support strategies and enhance business results. And he was recently named “The Father of Corporate Culture” by CEO Forum magazine. Larry is also author of The Mood Elevator: Take Charge of Your Feelings, Become a Better You (https://amzn.to/2Us1clM), which is a way of exploring your moods, and resetting them. One way that Larry resets his mood? By listening to music! We love how Larry uses music as a way of motivating and resetting the mood and we talk to Larry about his personal music choices. Doing things that quieten your mind and becoming more peaceful, is one of Larry's Mood Elevator tools to help change your perspective. The purpose in Larry's life has always been to help people live their best version of themselves: mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. He also believes that to be a good leader, you first have to take care of yourself. And he certainly practices what he preaches! Larry runs regularly to keep his body physically fit and enjoys competing in triathlons and bodyboarding with his son. We have edited this episode in a slightly different style. Instead of the normal format of discussing the interview in our Grooving Session at the end of the show, Kurt and Tim pause the interview throughout and take a few minutes to highlight some of Larry's key take-away points. Let us know if you enjoyed this different format on Twitter @behavioralgroov or drop us an email at info@behavioralgrooves.com. Joining me today was Larry Little. You may not know who he is, but Larry is one of many people working behind the scenes to keep the doors of your dealership swinging. I think it's important for dealership folks to understand that they do have a network of people working on their behalf to help their business stay healthy. How? Larry is with the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) - who works on things that those of us working IN the powersports retail side of the business don't always have time to do, like ... determine what motorcycle consumers want from us as well as what consumers that didn't know they want to be a motorcyclist; want. Yes, new MIC research has determined that there is a certain culture code that can be used to find people with a propensity to become motorcyclists. He admits this is a long term play but the insights in that are huge starting with you reading this, TODAY. There is a lot more to come as I got Larry on to talk about this early in their roll out. Heck, they haven't even named the initiative yet. So please be sure you watch www.mic.org for updates on that. What can you do today? Well, maybe re-examine how well you are tapping into your local area/regional culture of not just current customers - but WOULD-BE customers. Remember, we now know that as many as 8% of U.S. households have a motorcycle in their garage. Are you seeing that percentage of your local population in your store? Is your location sitting in the middle of a certain subset of the population that you don't include in your message? If so, they are probably having a hard time seeing themselves within your message and that could be setting a hurdle that you hadn't anticipated. As a realtor prepares a house for sale so that the vision is easier for the prospective buyer to see the result of their problem being solved - a "staged" house shown is a home that is ready to live in. If you have - as Larry mentions - just old white guys like him or I in your messaging, it may be harder for all the NON-old white guys to easily see themselves a part of it. I am not saying to pander, I'd never recommend that as it is immediately and obviously disingenuous and will work against you in the fastest way. What I am saying is that you need to look at who your current and prospective customers are and be sure your messaging speaks to them as a LIFEstyle they can see fitting into their LIFE. This is a much deeper conversation but I'm honored that Larry took some time to share the scratched surface with me. My call to action for all my listeners is to: 1) follow the MIC now and be informed about coming initiatives like the one mentioned above 2) email them your insights or feedback at: newriders@mic.org 3) look at your current messaging to your local population to see if it fits to them Lastly, share this message and podcast episode. The podcast continues to grow and I'm so thankful to all of you who have shared it. It is a labor of love for me that I only do in my off work hours. I have spent no money promoting the podcast so it's a slow road and that is ok by me. I'm here for the long run. The Dealership fiXit podcast exists to tap dealers into high performance ideas! A “Home Equity Conversion Mortgage” (HECM) is a type of loan designed for people aged 62 or older that allows them to buy a primary residence by making just one down payment and no additional mortgage payments for the rest of their lives. We know how this loan program benefits buyers, but what about Realtors? That’s the question my friend and associate Larry Reed and I will answer today. Follow along in the video above to see our full conversation recapping how this program benefits buyer and how Realtors can use it to better service their clients. After this month’s RV virus series, I’m sure you are all ready for a road trip! Ty and Larry join me on this episode to share their wisdom from more than 7 years on the road. This couple is truly inspirational and will have you rethinking your purpose and what it means to retire. Listen to Larry and Ty discuss what it means to retire with purpose and how their life looks after 7 years on the road. Are you planning a retirement with purpose? Retirement is a dream that comes after years of hard work and planning. You wait so long for that magical day to come. But what if all of a sudden the day comes and you discover that you don’t have a reason to get up in the morning? So then what are you going to do? You can only golf or fish or ride your bike for so many days. Ty and Larry realized that a lack of purpose in retirement leads to a lack of meaning in their lives. They found purpose in getting out of the house and helping others. Have you thought about what your purpose will be in retirement? Modern retirement isn’t about spending your golden years resting on a park bench The modern retiree has so much time, capital, and wisdom to share with the world. Retirement isn’t about finally reaching the day where you have nothing to do with your life. It is a major life change where you get to redefine what life is all about. This is the opportunity for you to redesign your life around what you are passionate about. What will be your purpose in retirement? Will you volunteer? Devote time to the grandkids? Write your memoirs? It doesn’t matter what it is, it just matters that you have a purpose. Think about what your purpose will be and who you will spend your time with. An RV road trip with a purpose Larry and Ty quickly realized after they retired that they needed a purpose. It was important for them to serve others. 7 years ago they discovered Habitat for Humanity and have been active Habitat RV Care-a-vanners ever since. With the Care-a-vanners they have a mobile community where they can be of service to others. Their purposeful road trip takes them all over the country building homes and serving different communities. They love the work they do and find that it helps to keep them young. What is the cost of living their RV lifestyle? Ty and Larry drive a 38 foot Class A Winnebago diesel. These rigs can run anywhere from $250,000-$2 million when purchased new. They found a good deal on a lightly used model. Their rig is self-contained and has a washer and dryer and even a satellite dish for watching tv. They spend about 250 nights a year on the road and maintain a home base in Illinois. They find places to stay through their work with Habitat for Humanity and often stay 2 months at a time in a single location. Often these sites are discounted or even sponsored by generous donors. They also utilize a senior pass that allows them discounted rates at national parks and Army Corps of Engineer sites OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE RETIREMENT ANSWER MAN HOT TOPIC SEGMENT [3:46] Some comments about purpose in retirement PRACTICAL PLANNING SEGMENT [11:08] How Larry and Tai have lived the RV lifestyle and coupled it with purpose [21:01] What is the cost of living? As Warren Buffet once said: "the stock market is a manic depressive.” The market can be full of euphoria and greed one moment, and switch to fear and panic the next. This can often be a time of danger and high-risk for some traders, but for other traders it’s a time of immense opportunity. How? In this podcast episode we’re joined by special guest Larry Connors. Larry has over 30 years in the financial markets industry and has been featured on the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, Dow Jones, & many others. He has been providing high-quality, data-driven trading research for over 15 years, and I’m sure that many BST listeners have a stack of his books on their bookshelf. I definitely do! In my chat with Larry you'll discover: How human emotions drive the market, and why it’s so important to look beyond price charts and indicators to understand what's moving the market, How we can leverage extremes in specific human emotions to create quantifiable and profitable edges, How Larry came up with the idea of publishing his book ‘Buy the Fear, Sell the Greed’ and what traders can learn from it, 3 simple indicators to quickly judge the mood of the market, How Warren Buffets investment approach to be ‘fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful’ can also apply to short-term trading, And yes, I’m going to ask Larry about that famous ‘Stops hurt’ chapter published over 10 years ago that still has people talking today, Plus we cover a whole lot more.

Manhood, Culture, Society, Family, Success Summary Good parents set good examples for their children … and it begins with character. We'll look at that in our Thought of the Day. And in our interview segment: what do Larry Winget and Chris Widener mean by the term, “real men?” It may or may not be what you think. That and more on today's show. Bob's Thought of the Day We'll explore: My favorite “Dad story” and what it taught me about character, the power of respect, and doing the right thing. Why a real man sets an example through what he says and does, but mainly through who he is. A saying that my Dad hung on one of his office walls: “To have a body does not make one a man. To have a child does not make one a parent.” Interview with Larry Winget & Chris Widener You'll discover: The story of why the Real Man Podcast was created. How Larry and Chris define a “real man.” Larry's and Chris' take on my Dad's saying from the first segment. Why men need to be reminded of the values of integrity, honesty, and discipline. The need for men to get together with other men and talk about “guy stuff.” The importance of the parents taking responsibility for modeling the right behavior. One art form that has always played an important role in Larry’s life is writing, something he’s been doing prolifically since he was in fifth grade. By the time he was sixteen, he had already written eight novels! To date, he’s finished twenty-five books (four of which were published), over eighty-five short stories (twenty published), several hundred poems (twenty-five published), a dozen movie scripts - four sold and one, Bloodhook (1986), produced. But perhaps his fondest artform is classical music. He started playing violin and learning about classical works as a child. He continued to study music throughout his academic career and now teaches the subject as part of his intensive survey course on the arts. Larry is one of the few people I know who has figured out how to stay entirely true to himself and his passions. Throughout our conversation, you’ll hear him say that some of his major accomplishments were a result of him simply doing what comes natural to him. He loves writing, so he writes. He enjoys reading, so he reads, and has found a way to do it as a career. And he loves music, so he listens to it constantly and finds ways to weave it into his professional life. When there are so many opportunities to compromise - whether with our careers, relationships, ourselves - it’s refreshing to hear from someone who has stayed true to what he loves. In addition to talking about literature and music, Larry also shares his thoughts on distractions, his teaching style, and his favorite failure. 00:00 - Intro | 04:56 - Larry’s exposure to music as a child | 08:21 - Why Larry kept studying music through adulthood| 08:53 - Why Larry thinks classical music is difficult for people to get into | 13:40 - Larry’s recommendation for getting into classical music | 15:49 - How music has made Larry a better person | 18:50 - The most impactful books and authors on Larry’s life | 23:06 - Larry’s favorite scene in a book | 25:21 - How Larry managed to write so much during his childhood | 29:31 - How writing helped Larry distinguish himself | 30:49 - Whether Larry ever felt lonely while writing | 31:44 - Larry’s routines | 35:24 - Larry’s thoughts on inspiration and writing | 36:36 - What distracts Larry | 40:17 - Larry’s favorite failure | 43:41 - Something Larry holds to be true, but that very few people would agree with him on | 45:31 - Kindest thing anyone has ever done for LarryMusic credit: Lee Rosevere's "Southside" (adapted) (CC BY 4.0)Camera: SoundJay's old-style cameraSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/switchbacktech)

Larry Yaw is a renowned architect based in Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley whose work connects people with nature using contemporary, sustainable, conservation-focused designs. Growing up in rural Montana gave Larry a deep appreciation for the utilitarian character of ranch homes and their thoughtful integration into the landscape, aspects that form the foundation of much of his work today. Through his design, Larry has demonstrated a unique ability to pay homage to the past while boldly pushing beyond preconceived notions of architecture in the American West. • If I had to use one word to describe Larry it would probably be “adventurous”—a quest for adventure seems to guide all aspects of his professional and personal lives. As you’ll hear in our conversation, Larry has traveled the world many times over, sometimes with his full family in tow, seeking out enriching experiences everywhere from the South Pacific to the Swiss Alps. He is also intellectually adventurous, as evidenced by his deep knowledge of history, conservation, Native Americans, and many other subjects related to the West and beyond. Physical adventures are a daily occurrence for Larry, whether it’s pedaling single track, stalking trout with his fly rod, hiking in the high mountains around Aspen, or shooting birds on the Montana prairies. All of these experiences provide the fuel that keeps Larry’s creative engine firing at turbo speed, decade after decade. • This was a super-fun conversation, and I came away from it inspired and enlightened. We discussed a broad range of topics including Larry’s architecture, his creative process, and how he has managed to stay consistently creative for so long. We chatted about his early years in Montana, some of his adventures around the world, and his thoughts on conservation in the American West. Larry is a true student of the West, so he had plenty of book recommendations. Are you eating what you think you are? As a modern hunter gatherer, I am quite conscious and meticulous about the foods I consume. I base my diet on a Four Kingdoms approach (eating from the animal, plant, fungal and bacterial kingdoms), and I strive to source the majority of my food bio-regionally. I still shop at Whole Foods and occasionally dine at farm to table-style restaurants, of course, and I was shocked to learn of the rampant food fraud that extends to seemingly reputable grocers and eateries. Award-winning food journalist and travel writer Larry Olmsted wrote a comprehensive exposé on fraud in the unregulated food industry, and he is here to reveal some of the industry’s most adulterated foods. He teaches us how we can be more vigilant consumers as we navigate grocery store aisles, food labels and restaurant menus.
