Discussing Progressive Myths with Professor Michael Huemer In this episode of The Rational Egoist, host Michael Liebowitz welcomes Professor Michael Huemer, a renowned philosopher from the University of Colorado and the author of Progressive Myths. Together, they unpack some of the most pervasive myths propagated by progressive ideologies, examining their philosophical underpinnings, logical inconsistencies, and practical implications. Huemer, with his sharp analytical style, challenges listeners to question widely held assumptions and consider alternative perspectives rooted in reason and evidence. This thought-provoking discussion is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of philosophy and contemporary politics. Michael Leibowitz, host of The Rational Egoist podcast, is a philosopher and political activist who draws inspiration from Ayn Rand's philosophy, advocating for reason, rational self-interest, and individualism. His journey from a 25-year prison sentence to a prominent voice in the libertarian and Objectivist communities highlights the transformative impact of embracing these principles. Leibowitz actively participates in political debates and produces content aimed at promoting individual rights and freedoms. He is the co-author of “Down the Rabbit Hole: How the Culture of Correction Encourages Crime” and “View from a Cage: From Convict to Crusader for Liberty,” which explore societal issues and his personal evolution through Rand's teachings. Discover the surprising virtues of holding back in activism with Professor Michael Huemer as we ponder the nuanced realities of political engagement. Our discussion demystifies the often misguided enthusiasm within activism and policy predictions, showcasing how even seasoned experts reveal a humbling track record in forecasting political shifts. Huemer's insights challenge us to reconsider the impact of our actions, comparing societal experimentation to the delicate workings of a living organism, where random tampering can lead to unpredictable outcomes.

Today, we discuss the idea that understanding a concept is not a matter of knowing a definition. As philosopher Michael Huemer argues, our main access to a concept comes “not through directly reflecting on the concept, but through activating the dispositions that constitute our understanding.” The Wittgensteinian view of concepts explains how it's possible that we know how to competently use terms even though it is so hard to successfully analyze them. I can't provide a perfect conceptual analysis of knowledge (no one can), and yet I have no issue using the term and understanding what it means. Not only can I competently use words that I can't analyze, I can reject proposed analyses as insufficient, like the justified true belief analysis. That's because I understand the meaning of the concept, despite the fact that I can't define it. “Indefinability of words is perfectly normal," Huemer argues, "since understanding is not constituted by knowledge of definitions. The best way to convey a word's meaning is through examples.” Language & Meaning: Crash Course Philosophy Understanding Knowledge - Michael Huemer Linktree One note from Huemer on the Wittgensteinian view of concepts and the contrasting Lockean view: "I think what I have to say about concepts is like some stuff that Wittgenstein said, but I don't actually care how well it matches Wittgenstein's views. I also don't care, by the way, whether the 'Lockean theory' matches Locke's views. You have to add in caveats like this whenever you mention a major philosophical figure, because there are always people who have devoted their lives to studying that figure and who, if you let them, will give you all sorts of arguments that the famous philosopher has been completely misunderstood and never really said the things they're famous for saying."
In episode 236 of the Parker's Pensées Podcast, I'm joined once again by philosophy professor, Dr. Mike Huemer. This time we discuss an invited paper he wrote on the problem of other minds--which he originally wrote as an undergrad senior thesis under John Searle (which is pretty cool). Huemer argues against analogy and perceptional solutions to the problem of justifying our knowledge of other minds and puts forth an inference to the best explanation instead. We also get into whether or not ants, dogs, and robots have minds and how we might go about deciding. Check the time stamps for the full list of topics we discussed. Dr. Michael Huemer joins me to discuss moral realism vs. antirealism, ethical intuitionism, phenomenal conservatism, moral disagreement, and much else in moral philosophy. Ethical Intuitionism Knowledge, Reality, and Value: A Mostly Common Sense Guide to Philosophy William Lane Craig vs. Erik Wielenberg Linktree / The Five Metaethical Positions / Noncognitivism/expressivism: Moral statements are neither true nor false. Evaluative predicates do not even purportedly refer to any sort of property, nor do evaluative statements assert propositions. Error theory/nihilism: Moral statements (that imply that something has an evaluative property) are all false. Subjectivism: Some moral statements are true, but not objectively. For a thing to be good is for some individual or group to (be disposed to) take some attitude towards it. Moral Naturalism: There are objective moral properties, but they are reducible. Evaluative truths are reducible to descriptive truths. Additionally, moral statements can be justified empirically. Moral Non-Naturalism/Intuitionism: There are objective moral properties, and they are irreducible. Evaluative truths are not reducible to descriptive truths. Why is there so little research done on cooperative strategy in relation to competitive strategy? Professor at BI Lars Huemer meets Silvija Seres in this conversation about the 17th sustainability goal, new analytics tools and tension between cooperative strategy and competitive strategy among other subjects. Dette LØRNER du: Introduce and illustrate cooperative strategies; goal 17 is central to all other goals; the strategic discipline has been obsessed by competition and positioning in existing value chains; value chains change; focus on value creation, not on competitive advantage; The essence of cooperative strategies is not about beating someone, but on how to be better with someone; boost everyone's unique values; relational rents; goal 17 in ESG is central to all other goals achievementsTension between cooperative strategy and competitive strategy. “I will bleed but you will bleed more.” Platform monopolies? Multinational companies and indiganous people. Which logic do you belong to? What makes a successful alliance? Competition often wins. Collaborative strategies need new analytics tools. New resource tool: alternative to Barney's resource analysis (VRINN analysis to explore competitive advantage). Rareness and inimitability are good? Resource bundles and how do they fit together. How can we challenge traditional business-models to find new sustainable solutions for city planning? In this episode you will lørn about Parqio and how they have created a solution for better usage of parking spaces for several different uses. Silvija hosts Lars Huemer from BI and Ketil Høigaard from Parqio and discusses among other things new ecosystems, resource combinations and challenging new business models.Dette LØRNER du: New data-driven and sustainability-driven strategies downplay competition, focus on collaboration. Our example of Parqio, and Airbnb for garages, shows how inhabitants are thinking differently, city planners, building developers are thinking differentlyResource combinationions and re-combinations. Better resource usage across the whole ecosystem, with example of garage gate providers who have become acces service providers, with ecosystem integration and software keys; resource bundles and interdependencies existing across bundles; a garage in isolation does not have that much value, but connected to the other resources in creative ways its value growsHow to build new ecosystems: micro to macro level. How can cooperation become a force to create success? Stressed? You’re not alone. In fact, women in the US are nearly twice as stressed as men. Not only do we register stress events more strongly, we often react both physically and mentally, all while taking care of family responsibilities and working to grow and profit from our businesses. Dr. Eris Huemer Winans is the founder of FACE it, a company that is changing the face of mental health. In this “Lesson On Self-Care”, we speak about the ways that women entrepreneurs can deal with stress, and one of the biggest challenges that impact women entrepreneurs who are making change. TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE: Being NOT OK. OK. And A-OK. How to deal with the news and when not watching can make you more stressed. What are the top three ways women can take care of their mental health People are speaking more openly about their mental health issues How to create a state of mind that allows you to look at the world and get through any obstacles The strategies that women entrepreneurs can use to move themselves to OK and beyond The #1 thing Dr. Eris recommends doing daily to stay in a good state of mind How to rewire your brain if you’re experiencing “mom guilt” Dr. Eris’s “Life Lens” and the eight areas she looks at her life to maintain harmony Dr. Eris’s “Process Communication Model” and the six different personality types that woman leaders fall into Why women play smaller What to do when other people don’t get your vision The number one thing that women disruptors can do to take care of their mental health What does self-esteem have to do with it? #LESSONUP (6:02) I think that it's very important to filter the time spent watching news, especially if you're anxiety prone, you're super sensitive and you get shaken up with the world events as we all do. Because globally we all feel a sense of anxiety because there is so much unknown in the world right now. We don't know where things are going and because we have all of this conflicting information from politics to the news, we don't always know necessarily what is accurate and not accurate. (8:35) I think it's so important for us to acknowledge that it is OK to not be OK. It is OK for us just to be OK. It is OK. All of this is OK if I am hurting, if I am anxious, if I am sad, if I am grieving, if I am depressed, if I am any of these things. It's OK. And it's acknowledging the fact that I'm either not OK or just OK that I can then find hope to feeling better, which is an A-OK state of mind. (10:25) Set boundaries and following through with them instead of not setting boundaries and making them as if they're threats that you don't intend to carry out. (12:02) We have to rewire our brain. Number one. I'm a mom. I have a six and a half year old and I love to work. I know that I as a parent, I am here to be an example to my child on how I want them to be in the world. So it's how I am living by example. Behaviorally and what my behaviors are, what he sees me doing, what he sees my husband doing, how we communicate, all of these things is how my son is becoming in the world. So I am teaching him how to become by how I am. So that's number one. (17:10) I think that as women we've overcome, We're the minority. We've come into the world and we have to fight differently. We have to prove ourselves differently. We have to overcome so many obstacles that are different, especially when we're working or putting ourselves out there. Of course we view the world through a different lens than men. I'm just coming from the perspective of a personality type and how we would lead. I think there are so many different women out there that we all lead differently. (19:25) As a woman, when you are a leader and you are revolutionizing the system and you're putting yourself out there and you're wanting to change the world depending on in what industry or on whatever level. I think the number one thing that I see is women growing into their own strengths, finding their strengths and their self esteem and believing in themselves. And I see that as taking time and experience. So if you have a vision and you want to do something as a leader and changing the world in whichever way you're wanting to, it's like giving yourself time for growth and experience and repetition and all of those things. And once you do that, you build that self esteem because that strength is what shines through. (22:00) We allow people around us to make us feel bad about our strengths and our desires and our vision and all of these things. So we play smaller and play smaller. We actually put ourselves into insecurity. Like we're trying to fit in this box of maybe what these other women are, how they're living their lives or how we feel like we should be. And we're living too big. So I think that you need to have an intuition, you have to have something within you that wants you to do more. So you need to stay true to that and be honest with yourself. And that takes time and practice.

Michael Huemer is a professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the author of the outstanding libertarian book The Problem of Political Authority. Today he discusses his work in "ethical intuitionism," which holds that (1) there are objective moral truths; (2) we know these through an immediate, intellectual awareness, or 'intuition'; and (3) knowing them gives us reasons to act independent of our desires.

He has recently released a series of four dialogues on the topic, which address many of the issues we talk about in this episode. Also covered: free will, empathy, and whether the nutritional value of meat changes our ethical judgments.
The most popular resolution to Zeno's paradoxes is to say, "Calculus solves it!" But, as I've written and spoken about before, the logic of calculus might be dubious. Can we really complete an infinite series? My guest this week is Dr. Michael Huemer, who has recently written a book called Approaching Infinity, where he claims that the modern theory of infinities do need to be revised - that calculus does not solve Zeno's paradoxes - and that we have to distinguish between completable and non-completable infinities. Though Dr. Huemer and I disagree on the metaphysics of mathematics, and I have an even more radical position on infinities, we agree that more work needs to be done to place modern mathematics onto sounder footing.

Professor Michael Huemer claims that if normal people acted like governments do, we would generally be horrified and find their behavior morally contemptible…so why do most people intuitively feel that government is justified in its actions?
