fWotD Episode 2763: Susanna Hoffs Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 27 November 2024 is Susanna Hoffs.Susanna Lee Hoffs (born January 17, 1959) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and actress. She, Debbi Peterson, and Vicki Peterson founded the Bangles in 1981. Their debut album, All Over the Place, (1984) was acclaimed by critics but sold poorly. Their second album, Different Light, (1986) was also warmly received by critics and was certified double-platinum in 1987 and triple-platinum in 1994. It contained the US number two single "Manic Monday" written by Prince and the number one single "Walk Like an Egyptian". The group's third album, Everything (1988), included the US top ten charting "In Your Room" and number one "Eternal Flame", both written by Hoffs with Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Hoffs was lead vocalist on five of the seven Columbia singles by the Bangles, which contributed to a public perception that she was a lead singer, even though all four members took lead vocals across their output. Following tensions including resentment at Hoffs's perceived leadership and the stress of touring, the band split in 1989. It reformed in 1999 and released the albums Doll Revolution (2003) and Sweetheart of the Sun (2011).Hoff's first solo album, When You're a Boy (1991), was followed by Susanna Hoffs (1996). Neither of the releases proved to be as popular as the Bangles' albums, although they yielded two charting singles in the US, the top 40 hit "My Side of the Bed", and "All I Want". She recorded several songs for films and formed the faux-British 1960s band Ming Tea with Mike Myers and Matthew Sweet. Hoffs teamed with Sweet to produce Under the Covers, a series of cover song albums. Her 2012 album Someday was followed by two more cover albums Bright Lights (2021) and The Deep End (2023).Hoffs's first novel, This Bird Has Flown, a romantic comedy about a struggling musician, was published by Little Brown in 2023. It received favorable reviews, and Universal Pictures purchased the rights to the novel for a screen adaptation. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:06 UTC on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Susanna Hoffs on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Ruth.

'SUSANNA HOFFS BANGLES LEGEND THE LOST INTERVIEWS' Susanna Hoffs is the beautiful, talented & iconic vocalist for the commercially successful all- female pop/rock/new wave/ band ‘The Bangles.' Hoffs angelic and awe-inspiring vocals are definitive on such Bangles classics as …“Manic Monday” (1985 #2 US Billboard Hit), “Walk Like an Egyptian” (1986 #1 US Billboard Hit), “If She Knew What She Wants” (1986 #29 US Billboard Hit), “Hazy Shade of Winter” (1987 #2 US Billboard Hit), “Walking Down Your Street” (1987 #11 US Billboard Hit),“In Your Room” (1988 #5 US Billboard Hit), and the breathtaking “Eternal Flame” (1988 #1 US Billboard Hit). Hoffs is also ‘The Bangles' rhythm guitarist and songwriter. THE BANGS: After Susanna Hoffs graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where she studied theatre, dance, and art, she headed back to Los Angeles and placed an ad in The Recycler, an LA based classifieds newspaper. A trio began to form with the addition of Sisters Vicky Peterson (vocals/guitars) and Debbi Peterson (vocals/drums) while subsequently adding Annette Zilinskas on bass. After short stints with names such as ‘The Colours' and ‘The Supersonic Bangs,' the newly formed all-girl band eventually settled on ‘The Bangs' while swiftly becoming a vital part of the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene. The Bangs debut single “Getting Out of Hand” was released on their label DownKiddie Records and caught the attention of KROQ deejay Rodney Bingenheimer who repeatedly played the record on his show. THE BANGLES: ‘The Bangs' were auspiciously mandated to change their name so the group dropped ‘The' and added the letters ‘les' to form ‘Bangles,' a banner that would flourish into one of the greatest all-female groups in rock and roll history. In 1982, under new manager Miles Copeland, The Bangles supported The English Beat on a UK tour. In 1983, the group made its first appearance on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. In 1984, ‘All Over the Place,' The Bangles first full-length album was released on CBS (Columbia) Records. Michael Steele had replaced Annette Zilinskas on bass. Steele began her music career as Micki Steele with The Runaways. ‘All Over the Place,' spawned the singles”Hero Takes a Fall,” and “Going Down to Liverpool” which featured Susanna's childhood neighbor and family friend Leonard Nimoy. The Bangles popularity escalated and was asked to join such acts as ‘Cyndi Lauper' and ‘Huey Lewis and the News' on tour.   Susanna Hoffs and The Bangles had captivated the attention of R&B/Pop/Funk/ music artist & songwriter ‘Prince.' Prince offered his penned single “Manic Monday” (1984) to The Bangles and the group promptly brought the tune into the recording studio. “Manic Monday” (1986) became The Bangles first big hit peaking at #2 on Billboards US Charts. Their second studio album ‘Different Light' (1986) produced by David Kahne peaked at #2 on the US Billboard Charts and is considered to be their most successful to date. Also in 1986, The Bangles opened for 'Queen' at Slane Castle, Ireland.   In 1987, “Walk like an Egyptian” won Best Video at the 15th Annual Music Awards and again at the 5th Annual American Video Awards. ‘Everything' (1988) The Bangles third studio album spawned the Top 5 Hit “In Your Room,” and their worldwide #1 single “Eternal Flame” penned by Susanna Hoffs, Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. The Bangles attained a well-deserved hiatus throughout the 90's but returned with rock and roll vengeance in 1999. They released their fourth studio album entitled ‘Doll Revolution' in 2003. Bassist Michael Steele officially left The Bangles in 2005 and the band decided to use guest bassists while on tour. The Bangles most recent album ‘Sweetheart of the Sun' was released in 2011. In January of 2014, The Bangles returned to the legendary Whisky A GO GO to celebrate the club's 50th anniversary. SUSANNA HOFFS: In 1991, Susanna released her debut solo album entitled ‘When You're a Boy' produced by David Kahne. The album spawned the Top 40 hit single “My Side of the Bed.” The release featured such musical luminaries as John Entwistle, Jim Keltner, and Donovan. In 1996, Susanna Hoffs released her second studio album entitled ‘Susanna Hoffs.' Based on a Saturday Night Live stint in the early 1990's, Hoffs performed in the band ‘Ming Tea' with … Mike Myers, Matthew Sweet, Christopher Ward and Stuart Johnson. The SNL skit morphed into a three comedy film series ... Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), and Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002). Jay Roach, Susanna's husband directed the Austin Power series and ‘Ming Tea' performed in all three movies. In 2006, Susanna collaborated with alternative rocker Matthew Sweet under the name ‘Sid n Susie,' and released ‘Under the Covers' Volumes 1, 2 &3 featuring classic rock cover songs of the 60's,70's, and 80's. In 2012, Susanna released her critically-acclaimed studio album entitled ‘Someday.' Susanna's vocals are more radiant than ever. Hoffs collaborated with musical partner Andrew Brassell and producer Mitchell Froom on her best solo album to date. All the tracks are co-penned by Susanna Hoffs. Hoffs & Brassell continue to co-write music and hope to release a new album sometime in 2015. ‘Susanna Hoffs' performs at The Satellite in Los Angeles on July 18th with special guests Fred Armisen and Petra Haden. ‘The Bangles' kicked off their summer concert series on June 6th at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, California … click [Here] for a complete ‘Bangles' tour listing. Recently, I had the great pleasure of chatting with Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles and discussed … Her latest solo projects …Collaborating with Andrew Brassell … Producer Mitchell Froom … Early musical influences …The Bangles past & present … The inception of “Manic Monday,” “Eternal Flame,” “A Hazy Shade of Winter,” …and future plans as a solo artist & with ‘The Bangles.' By Rick Sapio| Paperback, Hardcover One Nation Under Therapy by Christina Hoffsummer and Dr. Sally Satel   About Rick Sapio Rick is a life-long entrepreneur who started his first business, a bicycle repair shop, after the death of his father when he was just 13 years old. Since that time he has founded more than 20 companies. Rick is the seventh of nine children raised by a mother with serious, life-long mental-health issues. He learned early in life that it's best to think positively about the cards one's been dealt; no matter how difficult those cards seem. Since 1994, Rick has been the founder and CEO of Mutual Capital Alliance, Inc. (“MCA”), a financial holding company. MCA both directly, and through its affiliated funds, has invested into more than 120 different companies. He is a founding GP of Mutual Capital Partners, a private equity firm, since 2003. He is also the founder of the USA Mutuals family of funds, since 2001. Rick is the founding and six-time Chairman of the Gathering of Titans Program. This annual event – currently in its 15th year - is an “entrepreneurs-only” gathering of successful business leaders focused on making the world a better place. This event takes place annually at MIT in Boston. He is a graduate of Rutgers University with a B.S. in Engineering. In 2018, Rick co-authored and published, Who's In Your Room, a unique book and platform that advocates that the quality of one's life is dependent on the quality of the people in their life. In the 4 decades since he started his first business, Rick has learned that business growth and success are accelerated when a few key principles are applied. When Rick realized that less than 1% of companies implement these skills, he created "The 12 Foundational Principles of Business;” which form the foundation of his BFS program. He believes that virtually any individual or company can be put on the straightforward path to prosperity and exponential growth, by learning to implement these principles. In this week's episode, Amrit interviews Dr. Ivan Misner, Ph.D. in Organizational behaviour, the founder and chief visionary officer of BNI (Business Network International) the world's largest business networking organization, a columnist for Entrepreneur.com, a keynote speaker, and a NY Times bestselling author of many books including the latest one “Who's in Your Room: The Secret to Creating Your Best Life”In “Who's In Your Room”, Dr. Misner shares how the quality of your life greatly depends on the people who surround you: https://amz.run/4jTbAmrit and Dr. Ivan Misner, talk about the significance of working in your flame and not in your wax, the power of networking and the importance of having relationships in this dynamic world we live in.Dr. Ivan Misner states you need to work in your flame and not in your wax. This means, you must work hard on what you most love to do in your business to reach success. He strongly believes you can take steps in your journey toward truly loving what you do for a living. He started a management consulting business in 1983. At the end of 1984, he needed new business and had to find a way to engender more referrals. So he decided to create his own networking group with people he knew and trusted, and wanted to refer business to. This group integrated business with relationships under one core value of giving first. By the end of the year there were 20 groups and he needed to start a plan to scale. The organization now has over 10,000 chapters throughout the globe. And he keeps on doing what he most loves to do: helping others.Dr. Misner talks about core values as the fundamental beliefs and guiding principles that dictate behavior and help people better understand expectations within the organizational context. BNI's core values start with Givers Gain, one of the best attitudes you can have to live your life. Embracing this philosophy of giving first will change your life and those around you. And when it changes enough lives, it will change the world. Genuine love towards one another. This is the kind of vision that people need to establish with whatever business they start. He elucidates that being a good receiver is vital. This ensures the philosophy works and leads to a life of infinite giving. You must accept it is alright to gain, if not you will find yourself out of resources, and the giving will stop. It is essential that the givers also gain what they need so that they can give over and over. In this way, infinite giving becomes a part of who you are in all you do. Giving first is fundamental. But, you cannot constantly give at your own expense. They dive deep into the importance of cultivating relationships and networking, and the VCP mindset and skill set to help you do so. It is important to cultivate long-term relationships and you need the proper mindset to do so. You must be visible and credible, and once they know who you are and are good at what you do, they will be willing to refer business to you. Networking up with people who are leagues beyond yourself in business depends on your authenticity and willingness to help them.Focusing on the other person and creating value to them can help forge long-term relationships.Building long-term relationships and having a network is extremely important for you to live a meaningful life and transition through this crazy world. The people in your network are going to be the ones that will help you in difficult times. “Your network is a beacon of hope in a sea of fear”You need a mindset to cultivate these relationships. First people have to know who you are and what you do. Secondly they must know you are good at it. If they know who you are and you are good at what you do, they will be willing to refer business to you. You can build relationships in developing referrals. If you want to network up and connect with people who are leagues beyond yourself in business, Dr. Ivan insists you must not sell to them, instead be authentic and ask how you can help them. Focusing on the other person and creating value to them can help forge long-term relationships.“If you are always the most successful in the room, you are hanging out in the wrong rooms. All rooms are ok, but you need to find somewhere you can network up”About Dr. Ivan Misner:Dr. Ivan Misner is the Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, the world's largest business networking organization. Founded in 1985 the organization now has over 10,000 chapters throughout every populated continent of the world. Each year, BNI passes millions of referrals resulting in billions of dollars worth of business for its members.Dr. Misner's Ph.D. is from the University of Southern California. All of us have values that we live by, both good and bad. The question is whether or not your decisions are being made in alignment with your “good” values. Stop the chaos and insanity that is modern-American life, and decide to write down your values and what they mean to you. When all of your life’s decisions and the decisions of your family are first mapped against your newly-stated values, then you’ll begin making solid, long-term decisions that increase your success and fulfillment. Rick wrote a book on values-based decision making, called, Who’s In Your Room? and both Rick and Teresa found their spouses using this simple philosophy. They are also using this with their children, to help them make better decisions, and live better, more fulfilling lives. What is your main value? Why? How can you implement it into your life today? Start there, and watch the magic happen!

Contact Info Company: BNI - Business Network International Website: www.BNI.com Website: MisnerPlan.com Podcast: BNI Podcast Most Influential Person My wife, Elisabeth Misner. She's the one that really got me back into meditation. She's a Tai Chi instructor and meditation instructor at the Austin Spa resort. Effect on Emotions I think mindfulness has centered me more because that whole concept of 'be here now'. One of my strengths is I'm a dog with a bone. I'm very persistent. One of my weaknesses is that I'm a dog with a bone, you know, I'm very persistent and that persistence can play out in a lack of mindfulness. That is, you become so singularly focused on something that you're not paying attention to things around you. And so the whole concept of be here now, is in a book I've written that's going to be coming out later this year called 'Who's In Your Room'. I talk about creating harmony versus balance. Thoughts on Breathing Well, again, you know, my wife has helped me with that and in meditation and deep breathing oxygen is really important for helping with cancer. And I did not know this. This was something that really surprised me. When lab technicians and scientists want to halt the growth of cancer cells in a petri dish, they oxygenate the dish which slows down substantially the growth of cancer cells in a dish. And I had no idea about that. And so if that doesn't tell you that oxygen is important, nothing does. One of the therapies I did holistically was an oxygen tank that I went into. It's called a hyperbaric chamber. It was like a big submarine. I did that almost daily for quite some time. I did that daily for three weeks. And I felt fantastic. And that's when my PSA dropped from 13 to zero point three. So I did that. I did IVs, and I did things that you can't get in the United States, laetrile and other other things that just aren't offered in the US and so I did them out of the country. I went to Mexico. I tended to stand up for myself reasonably well as a kid, but everybody got bullied. I got bullied. I got harassed as a kid. I don't know if you'd consider this bullying or not, but it's my story of my why. I try to teach people that everybody's got a why, why they do the things they do in life. Particularly why they go into a particular profession or want to go into a particular profession. And it's almost always that something happens when you're a child. It's just a trigger. You may not even be in touch with it. And I wasn't, I had to go back, this was an exercise that I did in a company and I had to go back and it took me back to 13 years old and it's sort of a kind of bullying situation. I was 13 and when I was 11 and 12 I had run for student council and I got decimated. I mean not just decimated. I was last and I was sort of the laughing stock. I was a big joke with all of the junior high kids. So they were just harassing the heck out of me. And I felt pretty bad. So now I'm 13 years old. I'm a freshman in high school. They usually elect the next year, but because we were in junior high, they elected it from the freshman class and it was freshman history. And so Mr. Ramero, I'll never forget, I've written about him. I tell this story in a book I wrote called, Avoiding the Networking Disconnect. He asked the entire class, he said, we have to pick the student council representative of this class. I'll take nominations. Anybody want to nominate someone? Nobody, nobody nominated anybody. Now I'm sitting there thinking, I'd love to do this, but I don't need to get beat up again by my friends. By my peers anyway. And so he said, well, if you don't pick, if you don't nominate anyone, then I get to pick. And they're like, yeah, pick, we don't care. I remember this young girl, Cindy, she was a cheerleader. She stood up and she said, Oh, Mr Ramero, you know, I would run, but I'm so busy with cheerleading. I just don't have the time to do it. Mr. Ramero is like, Cindy, thank you very much for not volunteering. I appreciate that. Have a seat. And I'm thinking, I'd love to do this, but there's no way I was going to do it. And so I didn't say anything. Mr Ramero looks around the room and he looks at me and he says, Ivan, I bet you'd like to do this, wouldn't you? I was like, Huh, yeah, Mr Ramero, I, I kinda would like to do this. He said, okay. Ivan is the student council representative now, Bruce, I swear to you, I swear to you, the entire class in unison says, oh no, not Ivan. Cindy stands up. And she said, Oh, Mr Ramero, if you're going to pick Ivan, then I'll run. She said that. So I'm sitting there thinking, really, you guys, seriously, you know, you see me sitting here, right? I didn't say anything, but it was a very raw moment. Thirteen year old boy. I didn't have a crystal ball. I didn't know that I was going start a global business and write 20 books and be a keynote speaker. I didn't know any of that. I was a 13 year old kid that felt like a total loser because my peers basically told me I was a total loser and Mr. Ramero, God bless him, said, nope, you had your chance. I made my choice. I remember at that moment thinking, I am going to make something out of this opportunity. Mr Ramero saw something in me that my peers did not. I was going to make him proud and I was going to do everything I could to just do the best job in this role possible. And I think I did. And what's really interesting is that that same class elected me to be the sophomore student council representative, the same class that said, oh no, not Ivan. And I went on to do four years in student council and was ASB president my senior year. And it happened because somebody saw something in me. My why to this is I realized that almost every business that I've done since then was to help people be their best, to help people succeed. I can't make you successful in BNI. What I can give you is an environment where you can help yourself be successful. And that ended up really being my why and it was in a way because of bullying.

After Linda Ronstadt scored a Top 10 hit with Billy Steinberg’s “How Do I Make You” in 1980, he went on to score a series of chart-topping singles co-written with Tom Kelly, including “Like a Virgin” by Madonna, “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper, “Alone” by Heart, "So Emotional" by Whitney Houston, and “Eternal Flame” by the Bangles. Additional Top 10 hits from the Steinberg/Kelly songbook include “In Your Room” by the Bangles, “I Touch Myself” by Divinyls, “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders, and “I Drove All Night,” which was a major international hit three different times, first by Cyndi Lauper, then by Roy Orbison, and, finally, by Celine Dion. After Tom Kelly retired from the music business, Steinberg partnered with Rick Nowels, with whom he won a Grammy for their work on the title track to Celine Dion’s multiplatinum Falling Into You album in 1996. Since the mid-2000s, Billy has written extensively with Josh Alexander, with whom he penned JoJo's Top 5 pop hit "Too Little Too Late" and Demi Lovato’s “Give Your Heart a Break." Additionally, the pair partnered with songwriter/producer – and previous Songcraft guest - Toby Gad for Nicole Scherzinger's #1 UK chart-topper "Don't Hold Your Breath.” Other artists who’ve contributed to Steinberg’s long list of Billboard charting singles include Pat Benatar, Tina Turner, Susanna Hoffs, Chicago, Bette Midler, Ace of Base, Phil Collins, Katharine McPhee, Carrie Underwood, and many others. Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.
