Welcome to Funky Pearls, where we explore the timeless classics that shaped music history. Today, we're diving into the fascinating evolution of the iconic track 'Apache,' from its origins with The Shadows to its influential role in hip-hop.Written by Jerry Lordan and first recorded by Bert Weedon, 'Apache' gained fame when The Shadows released their version in 1960. With Hank Marvin's distinctive guitar sound, it topped the UK charts for five weeks and became a defining instrumental of the pre-Beatles era.Fast forward to 1973, and the Incredible Bongo Band's version of 'Apache' introduced an extended drum break that would become legendary in hip-hop. Though initially overlooked, this version became a 'national anthem of hip-hop,' sampled by artists like Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill Gang, and Nas.From its humble beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of multiple genres, 'Apache' is more than just a song—it's a cultural phenomenon that continues to inspire musicians across the world. That's all for today's episode of Funky Pearls. Author Joel Selvin, a San Francisco Chronicle pop music critic for thirty-six years, is author of more than twenty books about pop music, including the definitive account of the Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont and the biography of songwriter Bert Berns that paved his way into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as the No. 1 New York Times best-seller, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock with Sammy Hagar. Ladies and gentlemen, the subject of Joel Selvin's latest book was raised in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles and got his start as a professional drummer touring with the Everly Brothers in the mid-1960s. Jim Gordon's penchant for creative and astonishingly accurate musicianship earned him regular session work, joining the community retroactively referred to as The Wrecking Crew. His supernatural intuition and perfect sense of time can be heard on more than 30 Top 10 singles including several #1 hits, such as the Beach Boys' “Good Vibrations,” Carly Simon's “You're So Vain” and “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher (he also supplied the literal beat for “The Beat Goes On” by the latter). He has been immortalized on albums by George Harrison, John Lennon and the Byrds, among dozens of other household name music acts. Gordon was notably the drummer for Derek and the Dominos and provided the piano coda for their evergreen anthem “Layla.” Joel Selvin details how Gordon didn't merely keep time, but he was also instrumental in shaping compositions; whether it was his Latin-influenced rhythms on “Rikki Don't Lose That Number” by Steely Dan or his monumental drum break on the Incredible Bongo Band's “Apache” (a staple of hip-hop from the genre's inception, having been sampled on over 750 other records), he wasn't just a player on hits, he made them hits. If you love music history, then Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey of Jim Gordon is a must read. Joel Selvin's power of the pen makes live every page of Jim Gordon's life and you learn in the midst of brilliant musicianship, the darkness of mental health issues like paranoid schizophrenia. #mentalhealth #mentalillness #schizophrenia #drummer #rockmusic #popmusic #ericclapton #georgeharrison #lindaronstadt #carlysimon #sonnyandcher #cher #beachboys #jamesbrown #jacksonbrowne #boneshowe #mikepost #musicrecording #popmusic

Incredible Bongo Band was the brain child of prolific film and record producer Michael Viner, put together in 1972 to supplement the soundtrack to the virtually anonymous B-Movie film The Thing With Two Heads. They went from a loose studio collective to an instrumental pop covers consortium, interpreting classics of the day in their own inimitable percussion-heavy fashion. Viner recorded 'The Incredible Bongo Band' at MGM studios during down time assembling line-ups from whoever was available at the time. Apache, originally made famous by The Shadows, is simply legendary in the worlds of dance music and hip hop. One of the most sampled tracks of all time it has been used by Nas, Beastie Boys, Moby, Kanye West, Sugarhill Gang, Jay-Z, Aphex Twin, DJ Shadow, Goldie, Double Dee & Steinski, Faith Evans, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Leaders Of The New School, UNKLE, IBM Nation and DJ Spinna, The Bizzie Boyz, Schoolly D, LL Cool J, 2 Live Crew, 4 Hero, Godfather Don, Diamond D, Luke Vibert, Sway & King Tech, Rebel MC, to name a few... Apache was a staple for the likes of Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash as they invented the art of DJing at the Bronx block parties of the ‘70s. Over the years it has become a hip hop and breakers anthem and is revered as the break of all original breaks, with the rhythms of this LP even helping to coin the term 'breakbeat'

We explore Prom 64: The Breaks. Prom 64 explores the iconic tracks that spawned breaking and formed the origins of hip hop. Performed by The Heritage Orchestra and conducted by Jules Buckley, the concert will feature historic and modern-classic breaking tunes from James Brown, Incredible Bongo Band, Babe Ruth, Herbaliser, Madcon, and Poets of Rhythm, alongside live breaking crew 'Soul Mavericks', UK turntable royalty DJ Switch, singer Alice Russell, and many more. On the show we hear from Jules and the Soul Mavericks crew just ahead of their performance at the Royal Albert Hall.
Nas, Incredible Bongo Band, The Shadows. This Columbus Day weekend we give you the Suburban Underground Cultural Appropriation Show. All songs this week blend musical styles from a variety of cultural influences. Featured artists are The Clash, The Cure, Talking Heads, Living Colour, Charles Bradley, Goldfrapp, Peter Gabriel, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Incredible Bongo Band, Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force, The Blue Hearts, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and Queen. Originally aired October 5, 2018. (Correction: We quickly said in this episode that rock and hip hop were 20 and 25 percent of music sold in 2017. We misspoke. Meant to say that rock sold 20 million units and hip hop 25 million.)
