In this thought-provoking episode of the Voxology Podcast, Mike and Tim explore the pitfalls of using "biblical" as a rigid brand, how it impacts theology, and its effects on navigating issues like justice, community, and interpretation of Scripture. They discuss the importance of reading the Bible in community, embracing humility, and fostering critical thinking to form faithful and wise communities. Drawing on listener feedback, they tackle how Scripture has been used both to liberate and to harm and ask what it means to embody a cruciform way of living. The conversation dives into the role of the church in society, the balance between individual and communal faith practices, and the dangers of reducing the Bible to oversimplified categories. The salient focus of our discussion centers on the distinct dichotomy between biblical counseling and its secular counterpart. We elucidate that biblical counseling is fundamentally the application of God's Word to the complexities of human existence, thereby fostering genuine transformation rather than mere behavioral modification. Our esteemed guest, Rick Thomas, shares insights on the historical context of counseling, highlighting that biblical counseling predates secular approaches, which have increasingly infiltrated the church's understanding of mental health. We emphasize the necessity for believers to grasp the sufficiency of Scripture in addressing life's myriad challenges, as opposed to relying solely on secular methodologies that lack a foundation in divine truth. Podcast: Gospel TalksHosts: George Binoka & Jeff MusgraveEpisode Date: June 3, 2025Episode Summary:In this stirring episode of Gospel Talks, George Binoka and Jeff Musgrave explore the eternal significance of gospel-centered relationships. Drawing from Luke 16 and the parable of the unjust steward, they unpack Jesus' radical call to leverage our temporal resources—time, talent, and treasure—for eternal gain. The discussion centers around the idea of “forever friends,” a term George and Jeff use to describe those whom we reach with the gospel and with whom we'll share eternity. They argue that gospel relationships are not only spiritually binding but also the most enduring relationships possible—outlasting circumstances, cultures, and even death. The gospel, they contend, is the ultimate “relationship retainer,” binding people together with supernatural glue.Jeff issues a challenge from Scripture: if the world invests its resources with intensity to gain temporary returns, how much more should the sons of light pour themselves into eternal investments? They also highlight how hoarding the gospel is not merely ineffective—it's dishonest. Faithfulness to Christ involves faithfully stewarding the gospel for others.George offers personal stories of unlikely friendships forged through the gospel—relationships that defy natural compatibility but endure because they're built on eternal truth. Together, George and Jeff call listeners to take risks, invest deeply, and partner in the work of disciple-making, reminding us that the only thing we take to heaven is people.Chapter Breakdown:00:00 – The Concept of Forever FriendsIntroduction to the term “forever friends” and how the gospel preserves relationships eternally.02:54 – Eternal Friendships in ScriptureJeff unpacks the parable of the unjust steward (Luke 16) and Jesus' call to make friends for eternity.05:44 – Investing in Eternal RelationshipsComparison between worldly zeal for profit and Christian investment in souls.08:37 – Leveraging Temporal Wealth for Eternal GainWhat it means to steward time, talent, and treasure with eternity in view.11:16 – The Dishonesty of Hoarding the GospelJesus calls it dishonest to withhold the gospel from others; spiritual stewardship is a matter of truthfulness.14:30 – The Stickiness of Gospel RelationshipsOnce you've gone deep with someone spiritually, every other conversation becomes easier—gospel relationships stick.17:16 – Taking Risks for Eternal FriendshipsTrue friendship demands boldness; the gospel may threaten friendships, but it's also the only way to make them eternal.20:04 – The Transformative Power of ConversionConversion is miraculous, relational, and permanent—God turns strangers into family.22:43 – Partnership in the GospelSpiritual friendships mature into co-laboring partnerships for the kingdom.25:48 – The Value of Eternal RelationshipsNothing on earth is more valuable than souls; everything else we leave behind.27:01 – New ChapterClosing reflections and call to action: pray for laborers and consider supporting The Exchange monthly.Support the Mission:Partner with The Exchange to help multiply eternal relationships. 1 My son, if you will receive my words, and store up my commandments within you, 2 so as to turn your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; 3 yes, if you call out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding; 4 if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; 5 then you will understand the fear of Yahweh, and find the knowledge of God.* 6 For Yahweh gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. 7 He lays up sound wisdom for the upright. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 that he may guard the paths of justice, and preserve the way of his saints. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path. 10 For wisdom will enter into your heart. Knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. 11 Discretion will watch over you. Understanding will keep you, 12 to deliver you from the way of evil, from the men who speak perverse things, 13 who forsake the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness, 14 who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the perverseness of evil, 15 who are crooked in their ways, and wayward in their paths, 16 to deliver you from the strange woman, even from the foreigner who flatters with her words, 17 who forsakes the friend of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her God; 18 for her house leads down to death, her paths to the departed spirits. 19 None who go to her return again, neither do they attain to the paths of life. 20 Therefore walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. 21 For the upright will dwell in the land. The Catechism makes clear to us that evangelization and the sacraments go hand in hand. An ancient saying is highlighted, linking the two: lex orandi, lex credendi—or, the law of prayer is the law of faith. Fr. Mike illustrates this connection by showing us that, when you change the sign that points to an invisible reality, you risk changing where it's pointing. This is why “no sacramental rite may be modified or manipulated at the will of the minister or the community.” Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 1122-1126. It's time to get some new “clothes.”  Who doesn't like that? Right? But there's a small catch... we have to wait a little bit. Just stay here and wait, Jesus says ... until you are clothed in the Holy Spirit. The reality is that we could all use an excuse to get a little rest.  It is in resting that we are able to receive the blessing of the Spirit's presence. Join hosts Karin Peter and Blake Smith as they rest in the Gospel of Luke for this Ascension Sunday episode of Coffee to Go. Birth announcements offer the best kind of news: a new family member is on the way! In the book of Matthew, we're urged to expect the return of Christ with that same sort of excitement. It's joyous, yes, but delivery isn't easy. Metaphorically speaking, the world is in labor, and He is the only person who can soothe the pains of a fallen world. An urgent question rings out from the pages of Scripture -- what are we doing to prepare for His arrival? Will we finish the task? 2033 will mark the second millennia of Christians in the world. Where are we going? How do we as Christ-followers find and fulfill his plan for our lives in real time? God has not concealed his plan from us. The risen Lord commissions his people to make disciples of all nations. These have been our marching orders for nearly two thousand years. Jesus has sent us his power, shown us his purpose and sustained us with his promise for all this time. Why would he fail now? Message based on Matthew 28:16-20.Quotes:                                                                                                                         William Temple: Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His Holiness; the nourishment of mind with his truth; the purifying of imagination by his beauty; the opening of the heart to his love; the surrender of will to his purpose and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.Duane Brooks: I don't care if anybody knows the name of Tallowood. I don't care, but I want them to know the name of Jesus.Andy Crouch: Why is power a gift? Because power is for flourishing. When power is used well, people and the whole cosmos come more alive to what they were meant to be. And flourishing is the test of power.Mike Breen: Many of us serve in or lead churches where we have hundreds or even thousands of people showing up on Sunday. But we have to honestly answer this question: do their lives look like the lives of the people we see in Scripture? If you set out to build the church, there is no guarantee you will make disciples. It is far more likely that you will create consumers who depend on the spiritual services that religious professionals provide. Bill Hull: Our work is not to build a great church or a large church, church building is God's work.  Our work is to make disciples who make disciples , the rest of it is window dressing.  Eugene Peterson: The most important question isn't “What does this mean,” but “What can I obey?” Simple obedience will open up our lives to a text more quickly than any number of Bible studies, dictionaries, and concordances.D.A. Carson: This is not a general ‘I will be with you,' but rather an emphatic, comprehensive, and personal assurance that Christ's presence accompanies the disciple daily, continuously, and completely. To discover more messages of hope go to tallowood.org/sermons/.Follow us on Instagram, X, and YouTube @tallowoodbc.Follow us on FaceBook @tallowoodbaptist

The Catechism introduces the seven sacraments that Christ offers the Church: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. The Catechism highlights the fact that the sacraments are “by the Church” because the Church is “Christ's action at work”, and they are “for the Church” because they “manifest and communicate to men…the mystery of communion with the God who is love.” Fr. Mike focuses on the fact that while ministerial priests administer many of the sacraments, their priesthood is at the service of the baptismal priesthood, into which all of the baptized are ordained. Today's readings are from Catechism paragraphs 1113-1121. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. Homily from the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Jesus didn't give us the Bible. He gave us the Church. And the Church gave us the Bible. All Christians believe in the 27 books of the New Testament. We all believe these books are the inspired Word of God based on the authority of the Church to recognize this truth and teach it. The same Church has the authority to declare the 46 books of the Old Testament as well. June 1, 2025: Acts 7:55-60 Psalm 97:1-2, 6-7, 9Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20 John 17:20-26

Living the Christian life is not a matter of willpower and self-effort. Because of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we have the potential for radical and organic growth and change.  2 Peter talks about moving from selfishness to unselfishness, from enslavement to freedom, from foolishness to wisdom. It's talking about inward character change, about spiritual growth.  According to this passage, spiritual growth is 1) possible, 2) gradual, 3) essential, 4) practical, and 5) ultimately wonderful.  This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on June 8, 2014. Series: Following Jesus. Scripture: 2 Peter 1:3-11.
