Hello everyone! How are you doing out there? Let's start with a quote:“We have to listen to the child we once were, the child who still exists inside us. That child understands magic moments. We can stifle its cries, but we cannot silence its voice. The child we once were is still there.” – Paulo Coelho This quote directly relates to my conversation with Jay Fields, somatic coach, today. Funny enough, I connected with Jay after she shared an interesting post on LinkedIn about the inner child. I also completed coaching with one of my clients a few years ago, and one of her big a-ha moments was the fact that the scared and angry little girl was indeed still inside her. With all of this pointing to the inner child and how we need to take care of it so we can be the best version of ourselves, I am excited about having Jay as a guest on the show. Marni welcomes Jay Fields, who is an educator, a coach and an author, in the Life Check Yourself studio, to talk about how you can have your own back and learn to process your feelings instead of taking unhealthy coping mechanisms from childhood into your adulthood. Jay also gives Linked learning courses on managing your emotions at work and practices for regulating your nervous system and reducing stress. In this episode, the duo discuss how it is we can regulate ourselves and hold our feelings in a healthy way that we can then communicate to those around us. And it starts from an internal standpoint. Takeaways from this episode: - Give people the right read - How to train your body to have a different reaction - Don't pretzel yourself - How to differentiate between awareness and transformation - What are the practices that help you regulate? - Take responsibility Do You Have Your Own Back? [01:53] Having your own back is essential, especially in a society that rather teaches us to be smart, and to do what needs to be done without confronting our own experiences. When you don't have your own back, the experience is more external, almost like you're looking to someone else to tell you how you should act or react. It's when you experience situations in terms of what you think people expect of you, and adapt to that expectation. Rather than setting boundaries, you turn into a chameleon to please those around you, be it socially or at work. Having your own back is first knowing that you have an experience that you can track, and then knowing how to be an advocate for that; and soothe yourself in that, whatever it is you need in that moment. The embodiment of not having your own back looks like you're leaning outside of yourself; you're not holding your own energy but rather you're more concerned with what's going on externally. And what happens is that you're not quite there. And people, whether or not they're aware of it, can feel it. It's about how we hold ourselves from an energy standpoint. A person that doesn't have their own back tends to have a dysregulated nervous system, and that can manifest in several ways. For an immobilized or a down regulated system, the person is like a turtle in a shell, they're withdrawing. Be Soft [ 11:05] When you're dysregulated, one of the things to look at is what are the practices that help you regulate? And this differs from one person to the other. But a step towards regulating is bringing yourself back down enough, so that you have access to your thinking brain. When a person is dysregulated, they're in survival mode. And the key to fixing it is tracking what's happening within your own body. Once you've managed to do that and be aware of it, then you can use that knowledge to craft what you might want to say in the way that you want to say it. It's about understanding what you felt at any given moment, and acknowledging that feeling. It's about how you can soothe it, which is different than actually regulating. Soothing is speaking truth to power. A lot of women tend to skip the soothing step and either try to get it from someone else, or decide to become super self-sufficient with an'I don't need anyone, I can take care of myself' attitude. You've regulated, you've soothed then it's the do I need to advocate in some way? When it comes to advocating for it, being mindful of exactly what you're feeling and why you're feeling it will go a long way in helping you communicate it to the person in front of you. We want some softness in this. And the softness is, I can be there for myself and I know how to then speak from that to the person. Acknowledge Those Big Feelings [18:10] A lot of us when faced with an uncomfortable or a difficult feeling tend to go down two routes; either how can I fix this? Or what can I do to distract myself from this? These are templates that were ingrained in us from childhood through one of our caregivers. And it wasn't done with ill-intent. It's the scenario when a child goes to their caregiver with a problem, and the immediate reaction is how can they fix this for them? Or what can they do to make them feel better? Whereas when the first response to your feelings is acknowledgment, and the space to talk about how a particular situation made you feel, you learn to be able to understand that feeling and take a different approach with you into adulthood, rather than jumping into action. You get met in the feeling first, you take a bit and then you realize you're not weird for having this feeling, and it's not uncommon. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS In this episode of Midlife AF, I'm going to introduce you to one of my favourite people and probably one of the most influential teachers that I've come across since I've been following this path to an alcohol free midlife. Jay has had such a big influence on so many different parts of my life. But particularly on my relationship with my family and my relationship with myself. Jay is a somatic experiencing coach, she will tell you about herself in the episode. But she's extraordinary. She taught me to understand why people-pleasing and over responsibility are so much part of our conditioning, particularly as women, how our emotional boundaries are so porous, we often don't know where we begin. I find drinkers as highly sensitive people, and we're often on high alert, feeling and taking on other people's experiences, so much so that our own experiences don't matter anymore. It's Jay who introduced me to parts work, recognising that we we are all such precious darling little souls, trying our very best in life. And things that we do and the maladaptive behaviours that we have are there for a reason that they're trying to keep us safe and that their intentions are so good, even if their methods are genuinely not great long term strategies. For a long time when we're drinking or escaping our world. We haven't been present for ourselves. And so our little souls don't feel like they've somebody who had their back who was looking after them, like somebody who loved them, and this is why my approach, and what I found so helpful in Jay's work and that is also aligned with This Naked Minds methodology is it's not about beating ourselves up. It's not about saying I'm weak or being ashamed or berating ourselves. It's about understanding why we stumble, acknowledging the very real feelings, worries and concerns that got us here. It's about building trust and comforting our precious selves and our distress, reassuring them that we're here now that we're not going to abandon them anymore. This is a brilliant episode, particularly for anyone who gets triggered and feels like their behaviour of the people around them is causing them to drink. And even if you're not drinking, it's important stuff to learn for when the people around you, your partners, your friends, your children are pushing your buttons and you feel like you're going to explode, which is your nervous system being dysregulated. You are going to love this episode!! NB since I recorded this episode I have learnt a lot more about Autism and PDA, with the knowledge I have now I know that whether or not my child goes to school or not will not impact whether they have a fulfilling life or not. Robert Blumen is a DevOps Engineer at Salesforce, joined by Ev Haus, Head of Technology at ZenHub. Together, they're going over a critique over several methodologies when writing code as part of a large team. First, there's DRY, which stands for Don't Repeat Yourself. It's the idea that one should avoid copy-pasting or duplicating lines of could, in favor of abstracting as much repeated functionality as possible. Then, there's DAMP, or Don't Abstract Methods Prematurely, which is somewhat in opposition to DRY. It advises teams to not create abstractions unless they are absolutely necessary. Last on the list is WET, or Write Everything Twice. This is the idea to embrace duplication whenever possible. Ev notes that, like many programming absolutes, the success of each strategy depends entirely on the context. DRY, for example, sounds like a really good idea, until it happens everywhere. Suddenly, a chunk of code becomes difficult to reason, as a developer jumps around various method definitions to piece together a flow. DAMP often makes sense as a counterpart to DRY, because if you abstract too early in your codebase, you may find yourself overloading methods or appending arguments to handle one-off cases. DRY is typically best suited for testing environments, where an absolutely reproducible set of explicit steps is often preferable in order to quickly understand what is occurring. No matter the strategy you use, the core tenant is to solve the problem first. Try to accomplish the goal you need to, whether that's adding a feature or squashing a bug. Don't over optimize until you've finished what you need to, and don't think too far into the future about all the possible edge cases. The rest of the balance comes with experience. Some duplication is bad, but not all of it. Figuring out the absolute perfect solution is unlikely, so you've got to put the code out into the real world to find out what works. After that, bake some flexibility into your processes to adjust hot code paths or refactor them when needed! This is the third part of a series about being present in the body, which is beneficial to our physical training, dancing, and quality of life. If you haven't yet heard the sections on Grounding and Centering you may wish to go back and check out those episodes as well. I'll briefly discuss how to find a Oriented state of being, becoming present in the space in which we find ourselves and aware of the opportunities in the present moment. Having found a grounded state supported by the floor below us, and a centered state connected to our core strength, the next stage is to get oriented, aware, and curious about our surroundings. Here we seek perspective, exploring different ways of seeing and learning about reality. We use the five senses to investigate, expanding our experience to include the world around us. In The Living Gita, Sri Swami Satchidananda states that from a yogic perspective, “The body also in a way is outside you. The real you is just simply you--an isolated ‘I.' All that you have or possess is part of the outside world, part of nature.” Therefore, we are capable of impartially observing the workings of the body and our surroundings, and then responding powerfully. In yoga and dance, we look around the space, experimenting with positions of the body, levels, viewpoints, pathways, and means of moving and traveling. From the stability of the earth and a strong center, we are able to become mobile, reaching out into a larger experience of existence. Here we experiment with how things work, including the body and the objects around us. We experience trial and error, test hypotheses, and seek knowledge and wisdom through our experience. Here lie our raw materials, the stuff we will later use to convey grace, strength, and emotion. “Orienting is about knowing where you are in space, which helps you to create a connection with what is real in the present moment. To orient, look around the space that you are in. Use all of your senses to take in what you see, smell and hear the way a dog would when it first enters into a new space.” Jay Fields, Teaching People, Not Poses Fields suggests that “As you hold the pose, look around the room and orient yourself to the present moment.” Today, I invite you to simply notice what is so in your environment from a neutral standpoint. What is present? What is missing? (or absent) Only once this is established can we move with clarity toward what is next. In yoga and dance class, practice observing the details of your perceptions and sensations. Don't dwell on what you did wrong in the past or the anxieties you have for the future, but keep bringing yourself back to your experience of this moment. My podcast includes bite-sized insights on ballet, dance, yoga, well-being, creativity, and joy. Today I'll briefly discuss how to find a centered state of being, recruiting our inner resources to act powerfully. When we are centered, we sense our internal strength and the support of our respiration. We can become aware of our own thoughts, feelings, and body sensations. We are clear of mind, able to be in our personal power, courageous, at cause, and responsible. Centering is finding the connection to and strength of the core of who we are, including our physical core strength and all of our internal resources, courage, and power. In the yogic system, the center is associated with the third chakra, a place of action, creativity, gut feeling, and self-definition. In ballet and other dance forms, core engagement is crucial to our poise, balance, and power, and yoga also involves pranayama or breath control practices. In the book Teaching People, Not Poses, Jay Fields states that “Centering is having a sense of personal power and control over your life. To center, consciously put your attention on connecting to the center of your body, to your core strength. I like to imagine being able to gather all the parts of myself and all of my energy back to my center and take a moment to feel my strength.” I invite you to feel centered in your body as you practice core and conditioning work, as you practice yoga or dance, as you perform onstage, and in your daily life. “Draw your attention to your center and see if you can feel strength there.” For my favorite exercises to tap into your core strength, subscribe to the A Blythe Coach YouTube Channel and sample videos including “Planking Pleasures,” “Oh Wow, Cat/Cow!” and “Plush Paralleleves.” I also find Dandapani's energy-gathering meditation to be a supportive practice in the pursuit of a centered state, and I will continue to share tools that help connect to core strength and courage.
