What's up, dudes? Matt Spaulding from North Pole Radio and Vinnie Brezinsky from Huey and Bax join me to talk all about the game show “Hollywood Squares!” It's a full size tic tac toe with celebrities giving zingers and singing songs! In a 1987 episode, it's Scott versus Becky with guest panelists Joan Rivers, Jim J. Bullock, Tracey Gold, Alyssa Milano, and Gary Coleman. The secret square contained a trip to Disney World! Talk about a prize! As it turns out, Scott came out with $150 and a bike, and Becky really made out like a bandit with $300, bikes, and that dope trip to Disney! Get it, girl! The following year in 1988, Tommy and Suzy are contestants. The grid was filled Joan Rivers, Debbie Reynolds, Jim J. Bullock, Tina Yothers, Jason Hervey, and Janice from “The Price is Right!” Debbie Reynolds serenaded us with Rudolph while Tommy raked up the dollars. No one won the secret square, so there was no trip to Hawaii, unfortunately. Tommy wins, but also doesn't get the car. Talk about super random final challenges!Celebrities singing? Yep. Matching red “Hollywood Squares” jackets. For sure! Alyssa Milano looking disinterested and bored? Oh yeah! The North American Friends Movie Club

Brent, Kate, and Nate launch blast off with the hilarious 1987 American space opera parody film Spaceballs starring: Mel Brooks, Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Dick Van Patten, George Wyner, Michael Winslow, Joan Rivers, Lorene Yarnell, John Hurt, Sal Viscuso, Ronny Graham, Jim J. Bullock, Leslie Bevis, Rudy De Luca, Stephen Tobolowsky, Dom DeLuise, Rick Ducommun, Sandy Helberg, Dey Young, Jim Jackman, Jack Riley, and Terence Marsh."Spaceballs" received mixed reviews from critics upon its release in 1987. While some praised its humor and clever parodies of science fiction films, others criticized it for being too silly and lacking substance. In his review for The New York Times, Vincent Canby wrote, "The movie is so desperate for laughs that it's willing to try anything, no matter how feeble or obvious." Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times also criticized the film, saying, "I would have been grateful for some consistency, some sense that they knew where the joke was and were headed for it." However, other critics such as Hal Hinson of The Washington Post praised the film's irreverent take on the sci-fi genre, writing, "Brooks has constructed a brilliantly dumb, visually dazzling satire that manages to send up all the major science-fiction films of the past decade while simultaneously lampooning our own." In addition to mixed reviews from critics, "Spaceballs" also faced some challenges during its production. The film had a relatively modest budget of $22.7 million, and faced competition from several other high-profile releases that summer, including "RoboCop" and "The Witches of Eastwick." Additionally, some of the film's jokes and references were considered too obscure for mainstream audiences, and many viewers may have missed some of the film's more subtle nods to classic sci-fi movies. Despite these challenges, "Spaceballs" managed to find an enthusiastic fanbase over time, with many viewers appreciating the film's over-the-top humor, memorable characters, and quotable one-liners. Today, the film is considered a cult classic and a testament to Mel Brooks' enduring legacy as a master of parody and satire. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In the words of Terry Ray:"I  can't remember not wanting to be an actor.  To be fair, I can barely remember having hair, but still.  It's a passion I've fought hard to nurture and a dream I've never given up on, even when it defied all odds and all logic... and believe me, it usually did... Then one day I decided to quit waiting for the phone to ring for that one line as the theater manager on 7th HEAVEN (of course I used an example that I booked) and create my own opportunities by adding the hyphenates writer-producer to the acting thang.  I teamed with Larry LaFond and we amazingly hit a home run our first time at bat (look at me with the sports metaphors) with the incredibly successful little short film GAYDAR, which was in over 120 film festivals, won a ton of awards and was recently named by California Independent Film Festival as one of the 20 Best Comedy Short Films of all time. Larry and I also made a short film called THE COST OF LIVING, a way too timely comedy about life after global co-starring Jim J. Bullock, Molly Hagan & Greg Mullavey.  (More film festivals and awards).I'm the creator, writer and star of HERE TV's first original sitcom FROM HERE ON OUT (available on Amazon Prime) with Juliet Mills as well as the co-creator-writer-producer-star (sharing that "co" with Wendy Michaels) of MY SISTER IS SO GAY (Amazon Prime) with Loni Anderson as my mother.   I got to co-star in 5 seasons of Michael Vaccaro's star-studded comedy CHILD OF THE 70s.  I wrote and co-created the game show MODD COUPLES now playing on Hulu, I co-wrote the 2017 TV movie LOVE UNPLUGGED.  My new show,  TV THERAPY features a different classic TV character (played once again by the original actor) in a therapy session today (with me as the doctor) with all the issue they would currently have...  Since 2016 I've been starring in ELECTRICITY (my debut as a playwright)....Mel England as my co-star we became  the longest running play in Palm Springs, performing in two venues at the same time: as an immersive theater experience inside a real Palm Springs hotel room and also on stage as Oscar's Bar & Cabaret Theater and then moving to The Desert Rose Playhouse as our final venue and we prepare for an Off-Broadway run.  I'm  the first instructor at the famed Actor's Lab's new Palm Springs branch of their acting school.   Maybe my master plan is starting to work"!          -Terry Ray                                                                                                                                                                                   Epilogue:  Terry's  latest play is THE LINCOLN DEBATE which explores the possibility that  Lincoln was actually gay.  It premiered in Palm Springs in December 2022 and will be returning in the Spring of 2023 at The Bent Theatre- Palm Spring's newest and only gay theatre.  Terry is also the managing director of The Bent.See Terry's full bio and other fun info at: http://www.terryray.tvPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2023Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

Grammar authorities say both “champing at the bit” and “chomping at the bit” are fine to use. Jake was wrong about how to write Weird Al’s name. The quotes go around “Weird Al” not just “Weird”. Weird, right? Weird Al songs (and videos) discussed include “Eat It”, “White & Nerdy”, “Tacky”, “Amish Paradise”, “Fat” and “Lasagna”. And of course we couldn’t skip his polka medleys (including “The Hamilton Polka”). Efrem tells a story about bonding over Weird Al with George Rebelo from Hot Water Music. George is a great guy and amazing drummer. Hot Water Music is one of the best bands ever. Chamillionaire retired from rapping and is now a venture capitalist in Santa Monica. Here he is over a John Tesh sample and here he is on an extremely 2005 Scott Storch beat. People forget his breakout hit was about racial profiling. We couldn’t find footage online of the MTV show Death By Stereo did with Coolio, but here’s an old post on punknews.org that proves it happened. Roast battle champion Mike Lawrence has a take on Spaceballs similar to Phil's wife's. We discuss the works of Mel Brooks, including Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood: Men In Tights. Rick Moranis is at his best in Ghostbusters. Bill Pullman is at his best in Independence Day. He belongs in the air. We name-check lots of cartoon characters that one might find on an oversized t-shirt, including Taz, Betty Boop, Tweety Bird, Elmer Fudd and Foghorn Leghorn. There’s also mention of Yosemite Sam mudflaps. Phil & Jake both looked for evidence of Michael Bivins wearing WB merchandise, and couldn't find it. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It might be that he was too grown-up by the time these shirts came about. Krisha & Frank Show - 057 Something Real Nice Krisha's outfit reminds Frank of the “Choreography” number from White Christmas. Krisha mentions A Christmas Carol and Frank tells her about the time he played Scrooge's nephew Fred in a production of it at KLOS. The cast was a mixture of KLOS employees and celebrities including Mark Hamill, Kevin Pollak, Jenna Elfman, and Jim J. Bullock. You can watch the radio broadcast at  https://youtu.be/8aV27fb3m6U  Krisha noticed some Christmas gifts that Frank's wife Jere has already wrapped. Frank got them mixed up with other gifts going to his grandchildren, leading Jere to ask, “Were you even there?” Krisha discovers that Jere wraps gifts for herself but labels them “from Frank.” Frank says it is normal for Jere to buy herself something nice and wrap it up for Christmas. Leave a comment with your opinion. He has also bought her gifts like a mixer and a washer and dryer. Frank checks Jere's Amazon wish list to see if there's something she wants this year. Amazon suggests that Frank buy a Playskool Sit ‘n Spin, which you can order at this link: https://amzn.to/3af54fw  They say it is an Amazon exclusive and it is #1 in “spinning tops.” The top item on Jere's wishlist is a Chromebook like the one Frank uses. Content warning: In this episode we talk about sexual assault. “For Every Man, There's Two Women” (July 20, 1985) This week, we’re not talking about an explicitly LGBT-focused episode of TV. No, we’re talking about the episode of Too Close for Comfort in which a male character, Monroe, is sexually assaulted by two women. No, really. Jim J. Bullock, the actor playing that character, is gay in real life, and because Monroe is coded as queer as well, this episode serves as a bizarre example of not just how a sitcom can handle a sensitive topic but also how some actors’ offscreen sexuality can color the way their performance is received and even how their characters get written. Jeffrey McCrann joins Drew and Glen to try and make sense of this strange, strange bit of TV history. RAINN is an online organization that offers both information about sexual assault and counseling. You can chat live with a counselor here. Have a listen to the episode of the Drew-Tony podcast You Have to Watch the Movie that Jeffrey guested on back in 2018. We talk about Fright Night. Much in the way Bullock’s offscreen sexuality informs this episode of TV, the queerness of Fright Night’s cast really changes the way that movie plays out. This 2012 A.V. Club article on this episode is pretty much the best text trying to make sense of this episode. It also brought us to this interview with Jim J. Bullock on the website Guy Spy. Check out Old Time TV, without whose help we would not have been able to do this episode. Behold the short-lived wonder of Jim J. and Tammy Faye. And have a look at the David Lynch series Rabbits that Jeffrey mentions. Here’s an explainer for how the movie Streets of Fire may have “inspired” elements in the video game Final Fight, which BTW is one of the most homoerotic games ever. And here’s the weird bit with Roseanne and Freddy Krueger that makes it four — count ‘em FOUR — of the daughters from Just the Ten of Us who share screentime with Freddy. Weird, right? "Role/Play" will be screening in Palm Springs, as the Closing Night feature Film for the Cinema Diverse Film Festival, on Sept. 26. Role/Play is a romantic drama, with two lead characters (with very different life perspectives from each other) who learn they have much more in common they they initially realized. It opens with TV soap opera star "Graham Windsor" (Steve Callahan) who has just been outed as the result of a gay sex tape scandal. He has taken refuge at a Palm Springs resort (filmed at the Alexander Inn) to escape from the media. Windsor meets "Trey Reed" a marriage-equality activist (Matthew Montgomery) who has his own issues stemming from a public divorce. The story unfolds with revelations, disclosures, and self-discovery, as a budding romance develops. The film tackles issues such as outing of celebrities, gay marriage, the judgmental/prying mainstream and gay media, and the challenges of trying to live a lie while being in the public eye. Filmed in Palm Springs, Role Play has already sold-out countless film festivals, including Outfest and Qfest, where its lead star, Matthew Montgomery, won the Artistic Achievement Award. "Role/Play" stars Montgomery, Steve Callahan and Jim J. Bullock of "Too Close for Comfort," "Spaceballs" and "Roseanne."

Bullock, is a highly popular actor who is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of the goofy but hunky geek “Monroe Ficus” on the hit TV sitcom “Too Close For Comfort”, and as the narcoleptic “Prince Valium” in the classic Mel Brooks movie “Spaceballs”.  But beyond those signature roles, he's had a long and diverse career. On the big screen, you've seen him in many movies including “Switch”, “Get Your Stuff”, “Kissing Jessica Stein”, “10 Attitudes”, “Circuit”, “Role/Play”, and “Ron and Laura Take Back America”, for which he and his fellow cast members won an Idyllwild International Film Festival Award for Best Ensemble Cast. And on television, besides “Too Close for Comfort”, he's appeared in dozens of shows including “ALF”, “Seinfeld”, “Roseanne”, “The Bold and the Beautiful”, “Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide”, “Glee” and many more great shows. He also co-hosted “The Jim J. and Tammy Faye Show” with Tammy Faye Bakker. And of course, he was very entertaining on game shows like “Battlestars”, “The New Hollywood Squares”, “Match Game”, “Body Language” and “I've Got a Secret”.  And on the Broadway stage, our guest starred in “Hairspray” as “Wilbur Turnblad”, a role he also played in the national touring production. AND he also co-starred in the national tour of “Kinky Boots”, playing “George”, the factory manager. And if ALL THAT weren't enough, our guest was also the voice of the lead character, “Adam Seymour Duckstein” in the groundbreaking animated series, “Queer Duck”.  For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/@harveybrownstone,#harveybrownstone,@harveybrownstoneinterviews,#harveybrownstoneinterviews,#JimJBullock,@JimJBullock,#MonroeFicus,#TooCloseForComfort,#PrinceValium,#Spaceballs,#KissingJessicaStein,#TammyFayeBaker,#Hairspray,#KinkyBoots,#AdamSeymourDuckstein,#PaulLynde,#TedKnight,#HIV,#AIDS,#WorstCooksInAmerica,Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
