This month's Deep Dive series is about parenting through uncertainty. Listen to all of the episodes in the series with this Spotify playlist. Gloria DeGaetano, parenting expert and founder of the Parent Coaching Institute, recently wrote: "There's almost not a word to express the stress parents are under right now. 'Overwhelmed' doesn't cut it. It's beyond anything we've ever experienced." This really is a strange and scary moment for all of us, and parenting through our own anxiety is proving a special challenge. In this episode we discuss how to parent bravely–which doesn't mean parenting in denial but does mean creating emotional safety for our families even when we don't have all the answers. SUMMARY KEYWORDS child, primitive reflexes, eye, vision, kids, trauma, nearsighted, visual, important, therapy, understand, create, doctor, called, parents, conditions, birth, developmental, nutrition, problem Hello, everyone, it's Dr. Sam, I'd like to welcome you to my EyeClarity podcast. This is a show that offers cutting edge information on how to improve your vision and overall wellness through holistic methods. I so appreciate you spending part of your day with me. If you have questions, you can send them to hello@drsamberne.com. Now to the latest EyeClarity episode. Hey everyone, I want to welcome you to my talk today, here at Kidpower. And Albuquerque. Kidpower is near and dear to my heart, because it's a place I've been coming for, I don't know, over 20 years, and I help the kids with their vision. So I'm going to talk about that today. And to begin with, what I want to do is I want to talk about a core issue that has been coming up in the context of working with kids. And that core issue has to do with cracking the code, cracking the code, with each child, what is it going to take to turn the switch on so that they're thriving? And when I see a child here at Kidpower, or in my practice, that's my biggest curiosity, because usually, you know, parents are coming in and we know as parents were really struggling with what's going on with my child, and why are they struggling in school? And how come they're not reading and we just went to an IEP, you know, we did the testing, and now they may end up in a special education class. So I have to say, I have some personal experience, because I was one of those kids. I grew up in the Northeast, and I came from a family that really stressed education. And my parents, my grandparents, my aunts, and uncles, a bunch of intellectuals. And so I remember my uncle going to his house, and he had like, all these books on foreign language, he actually spoke five different languages. And my, my mom and dad, I mean, they just stressed college and grad school. But the thing was, is I was eight years old, and I was diagnosed with a learning disability. And, as I, as I think about it, now, it's kind of a painful time because I didn't want to read I didn't like reading. I wasn't a good reader. School was really challenging for me. And so my, my mom took me to a lot of places. And we actually ended up like a lot of the kids here at Kidpower. I ended up at an eye doctors office. And he said to me, Well, you're nearsighted. And let's give you some glasses. And so I got these lenses. And I started to memorize, that's how I got through school. And I never was a good test taker. And I just worked really hard. And I was able to do pretty well in high school and college and got into professional school, graduated and I met a, what we call it developmental optometrists. This was a, an eye doctor who looked at vision in a more holistic way. And I was 20 years old. And he had a course that he was offering. And he also was offering his services as a doctor and as me as a patient. So I started going with him, and he diagnosed me with a condition called convergence insufficiency. Meaning my left eye used to wander out, I would see double vision, I couldn't focus. I had a little bit of impulsivity, a little bit of hyperactivity, and sounds like ADHD, right. And that's kind of what I had. And so through his physical therapy exercises, I was able to heal that condition.

Our SONG TO CHEW this week, is STRANGERS, from my 1992 child abuse prevention concert with KidPower and actor John Ritter. Before people turn 18, one out of four of us will have been sexually abused. Our feelings are like an early warning system. If we feel uncomfortable about a situation, we need to listen to that little voice and get to safety! Adult social interactions can be very confusing for kids. 85% per cent of the time, the abuse comes from someone who we know and trust. Less often, it's a 'stranger', who is 'anyone we don't know'; a man, woman, boy or girl. If a child is 8 years old or under, and on their own, they should never talk to strangers, except in emergencies. Kids over 8 years old, can talk to strangers, but they must keep a safe distance, and not give any personal information. That's because kids under 8 can easily get distracted from the safety rules when they talk to someone. ~ My 'Songs To Chew' podcast ~ link in bio, or wherever you get podcasts ~ Instagram.com/thepeteralsop ~ FaceBook.com/WeLikePeterAlsop ~ Youtube.com/peteralsop ~ peteralsop.com ~ Patreon.com/peteralsop

Today's SONG TO CHEW is called COURAGE. We'll listen to the version I recorded for my live “Wake Up!” video with John Ritter, and my friends Irene van der Zande and Timothy Dunphy from Kidpower. They have an organization that teaches kids and families how to keep safe, and out of dangerous situations. We need 'courage' to face something or someone who scares us. 'Courage' comes from the french word 'couer' which means 'heart'. If we pay attention, our heart tells when we're scared, sad, happy or angry! Out heart reacts when we feel danger, and sends a message to our brain to decide if we're gonna fight or run away! Sometimes when we feel scared, we're not sure if we're really in danger, like when someone is being abusive to us. Usually it's best to leave when that happens, but if we have courage and decide to stay and listen, even though it's uncomfortable, sometimes we can talk things through, and our heart calms down and things don't feel so scary! Click the link below to listen, and if you want to see this live concert, go to YouTube.com, type in 'Peter Alsop Courage'! Hey everybody, it's Dr. Sam and I wanted to give you a glimpse into an evaluation I did making recommendations with a seven-year-old, autistic child. Now many of you don't know, but I have specialized in working with children along the autism spectrum. We call it ADD on one end and autism on the other end. And I consult at a facility in Albuquerque called KidPower. You may have heard in some of my other podcasts, where I do trainings with the therapists, and I have extensive education and experience in working with these kids, I love these kids, they're so awesome. And my kind of eye exam is really different than most eye doctors, we spend most of this time on the floor, believe it or not, because I'm really interested in their sensory-motor development. You know, one of my teachers used to say that when a child comes in for an evaluation, you're evaluating the eyes and the vision, but you're really evaluating the total child, the whole child. You know, one of my teachers used to say that when a child comes in for an evaluation, you're evaluating the eyes and the vision, but you're really evaluating the total child, the whole child. And so we're looking at it from a developmental perspective. We're looking at it from a nutritional and biochemistry perspective. And we're looking at it from Well, a lot of different facets beyond reading the eye chart, you know, most eye exams, you read the eye chart, they check you for eye health, they give you a pair of glasses, and you're out the door and unfortunately in the pediatrics world, they put eyedrops in children's eyes and it paralyzes the focusing muscles and then they end up giving these really whacked out prescriptions, which are too strong they're too distorted because when you use eye drops, you are paralyzing the focusing muscles inside the eye. So in this boy, he came in with a very imbalanced prescription one eye was a lot more farsighted than the other in terms of the glasses, and he has a condition where his eyes are diverging so when I stray while the other eye wanders out, and then every once in a while he'll alternate in the wandering eye will come in and fixate. So we call this an alternating exotropia or a divergent strabismus, and he's had two eye muscle surgeries. And whenever you do eye muscle surgeries, you're disconnecting the eyes from the brain, it is one of the worst surgeries you could ever do. And it really has a very low success rate. And it's very eye centric, you know, let's try to fix the, the strabismus by straightening the eyes through cutting the eye muscles ...

This episode is the second in a collaborative series that I'm doing with Sean Kosofsky, known as the Nonprofit Fixer. We're focused in on Board Development in preparation for a webinar that we'll be co-hosting on the 29th of January. This week, you're going to hear from two nonprofit leaders who have deliberately invested time into board development. Both are clients of Sean and they agreed to share their experiences here so that we can learn from their work.First up is Jack Beck. When he was just 16 years old, Jack was struggling with serious challenges as a queer young person and it was an LGBTQ+ nonprofit that stepped in with help, which made all the difference. Since then, he has dedicated his career to supporting organizations like the one that helped him. He began by working with community-based HIV organizations, and over the past 15 years, he has worked with grassroots queer groups all over the world. In 2015, he left his full-time job to start TurnOut, a nonprofit organization that focuses on connecting Bay Area volunteers with LGBTQ+ causes that can use their help. Our second interview for this episode is with Irene van der Zande. Irene has been dedicated to protecting children, teens, and adults, including those with special needs from abuse, bullying, assault, exploitation and other emotional and physical violence by empowering them with knowledge and skills. She is the Executive Director and Founder of Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International, a global nonprofit that has served over 6 million people of different ages, abilities, cultures, beliefs, and identities since 1989.Connect with Jack:www.turnout.orgConnect with Irene:https://www.kidpower.org/****INTERESTED IN DELIVERING *MAXIMUM* VALUE FOR YOUR MEMBERS?Download a FREE Scorecard here and get ACTIONABLE insights in less than 10 minutes: https://joyofmembership.com/scorecard****ABOUT YOUR HOSTYes, there is a “real” Joy in The Joy of Membership.Founder & CEO Joy Duling has been working with leaders of associations, trade groups and nonprofits since 2005.She has also walked the same journey, serving for nearly 10 years as the Executive Director of a membership-based nonprofit which she helped launch from scratch and led to annual revenues of more than $1M exclusively from membership contributions.Joy has been widely recognized as a speaker, an online educator and a trusted advisor, twice winning the “Unsung Hero Award” from the National Association of Women Business Owners' Central Illinois Chapter. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER. CONTENT WARNING: Discussions of racism and racist action, Asian-American stereotypes, violence, snakes, danger to animals. AJ Ganaros of Straight Off the Top of My Headlines, Shattered Worlds RPG, and Christmastide, Ohio joins us this week to talk about a truly seminal piece of film. That word gets tossed around a lot for a lot of different movies, but it’s very literally true for this movie, in how it spurred the careers of several Hong Kong martial arts legends and proved that martial arts action films could be profitable for Western audiences. But it’s not just this movie’s influence that makes it so interesting - it’s the singular, visionary actor and mind behind it. Bruce Lee’s name is now iconic and legendary, and if you haven’t ever seen one of his movies, it might not be clear why. He’s effortless, graceful, funny, sexy, and altogether singular in how he both chews scenery while also being the coolest person in every room. And despite some significant flaws and constraints, Bruce Lee makes this movie a classic of cinema, let alone action movies. From combating child hunger to reducing human trafficking, or fighting Ebola in West Africa and striving to eradicate AIDS by 2030, UNICEF USA is hard at work making a difference where it matters. UNICEF was founded in 1946, post WWII, to help children affected by the war, and UNICEF USA supports UNICEF's work through fundraising, advocacy, and education in the United States. Graded by Charity Navigator in 2019, UNICEF USA received exceptional scores in transparency, accountability, and administration, making them one of the top rated charities in the world. UNICEF prides themselves on being largest agency working to improve the lives of children in difficult circumstances and we were fortunate to have Michael Nyenhuis, UNICEF USA's President & CEO, join us on the podcast this week. On the podcast, they discussed UNICEF USA's work pre-COVID, how it has shifted in response to the pandemic and the accompanying economic recession, UNICEF USA's work fighting for racial justice, and their internal diversity policies at the organization. Nyenhuis shared that he started his career as a journalist covering the HIV pandemic in Honduras during the 1990's, and his experience following that outbreak inspired him to transition into the non-profit field. Nyenhuis also went into deep detail on UNICEF USA's work both on the global and the local scales as they ramped up to mitigate the fallout from COVID19. In the immediate days following the outbreak, UNICEF USA focused on delivering Personal Protective Equipment to 40,000,000 healthcare workers, but they never lost sight of their mission to help children. Building platforms they call the Learning Passport and Kid Power, they made sure they were able to help continue the education of students who may be out of school, making these platforms available to both and parents students alike. With every $.89 per $1.00 raised going to their work of helping kids, their ability to affect change at scale is unrivaled.

The value and power of the Belt and Road Initiative were well illustrated at FILMART 2017 in a Hong Kong joint venture to develop and distribute animated series aimed mainly at children under Russia’s famous Riki brand, said Christine Brendle. The CEO of Hong Kong’s Fun Union, an affiliate of Riki, believed the SAR’s talented people, animation expertise and regional connectivity were “star factors” for success.

Disclaimer: Slightly spicier language found in this episode This week: first-time guest Chris Arias shares his memories of Aaron Carter’s Aaron’s Party, second-time guest Jerry Woolbright remembers being too old for this sh*t, and together we dissect this Kid Power throwback to the golden age of funk and hip hop. In this track: Out of control calls and responses, corny sound fx, anachronistic lyrics obviously written by much older men, and uncomfortable allusions of what was to come for the young artist. Stuff we like: Charly Bliss - “Urge to Purge,” Dinosaur Jr. - “Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not,” Lush - “Blind Spot EP”

Wearables, language development, and new methods of education in marginalized communities are changing the way we think about the connections between learning and health. The stakes remain high, as more and more children globally receive limited access to basic education and nutrition. Successful initiatives such as Thirty Million Words, UNICEF's Kid Power wrist band, and innovative girls' education models work to stimulate health and education in new and inventive ways. How are these programs reaching kids in need, and how should the global community engage where resources are limited or non-existent?

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Irene van der Zande, who was inspired to found Kidpower by a frightening incident in 1985. As she was leading a group of young kids on a field trip, a man charged towards them and threatened to take one of the children. Irene put herself between the man and the children, including her own son and daughter, and shouted. The children were unhurt and soon recovered - but Irene was shaken and determined to do something to help people, especially children, build the skills and confidence to take charge of their own safety. Today, Kidpower is a growing international organization. Worldwide it has served over 2 million children, teens, and adults, including those with special needs, through workshops and educational resources. The future will bring more local services, more centers in countries all over the world, more books and educational materials, and more chances for Kidpower to affect the lives of people everywhere. For a comprehensive description of the many people involved in the creation and success of Kidpower, see Kidpower - a Tapestry Woven by Many Different Hands.
Amy Tiemann continues her series of interviews with Courageous Parenting anthology contributors. This week, Kidpower founder Irene van der Zande returns to the show. How can parents teach their kids to be independent and safe? Kidpower personal safety skills are designed to do just that, for people of all ages. Listen in and learn how to "co-pilot" your kids (without becoming a "helicopter parent") as they take their first steps out of the nest. Amy and Sheryl discuss their typically crazy weeks, including Jury Duty for brand-new US Citizen Sheryl. Their minds are still wrapped up in the impact of the economic crisis on moms and families. Then Mojo Mom switches gears to interview Irene van der Zande, founder of Kidpower. Over the past 20 years, Kidpower has taught personal safety skills to over 1.2 million people of all ages. Amy and Irene talk about the founding principles that have made Kidpower so successful, and the reasons why it is so important to teach kids skills that will allow them to gain life experience and explore the world with confidence. Child safety is often a missing chapter from parenting education, and Kidpower fills in that knowledge gap with strategies and skills. Amy Tiemann has joined Irene's efforts by starting a new center, Kidpower North Carolina.
