We're excited to bring you insights from a recent interview with Tim Fulton, President of Small Business Matters, Vistage Chair Emeritus, and Executive Coach. Tim is a returning podcast guest and a favorite among our listeners, bringing his wealth of knowledge to help you attract and retain top talent in today's evolving job market. Labor Market Insights: Navigating the New Normal Tim starts by addressing a common observation: “Most business owners would tell you the labor market has improved over the past 12 months.” This improvement is particularly notable for small and mid-sized companies. Businesses have adapted post-COVID, finding innovative ways to attract candidates from diverse backgrounds, different markets, and varying levels of education and skills. Flexibility is Key: Adapting to Workforce Needs A critical trend highlighted by Tim is the increasing need for flexibility. Companies are shifting from rigid work schedules to more adaptable models, such as offering hybrid work options and flexible hours. Tim emphasizes that the question shouldn't just be about remote vs. in-office work but rather, “Do I trust my employees?” This trust-based approach focuses on outcomes rather than the specific logistics of where and when the work is done. Embracing Modern Work Policies: Unlimited PTO and Remote Work Pre-COVID, concepts like unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO) and remote work were often dismissed. However, Tim believes that with the right employees, processes, and procedures, these policies can be effective across various businesses. The modern workforce, especially younger employees, highly values remote work options, making it a crucial aspect of job listings today. As Tim puts it, “Today ⅔ of employees are knowledge workers and work from home. The train has left the station, we are not going backward to office life as we knew it.” Crafting Compelling Job Listings Job listings must reflect the current job market's demands. Tim suggests including clear expectations regarding work location, flexibility, and growth opportunities in the description and the job results in the job heading. Additionally, platforms like Indeed, LinkedIn, your own company's website, and local colleges/universities are excellent for reaching a diverse pool of candidates. Effective Interview Strategies: Finding the Right Fit During interviews, it's essential to assess if the candidate can perform the job, fit within your company culture, and work well with you. Tim advises using behavior assessments and post-hire evaluations to ensure you're making the right choice. Group interviews can be beneficial when you have multiple strong candidates, and using a scorecard can help in making objective decisions. Ensuring the Right Hire: Comprehensive Evaluation To confirm you've made the right hiring decision, involve various stakeholders in the hiring process, conduct thorough reference checks, and use behavioral assessments to gauge the candidate's fit within your team. Conclusion: Prepare to Transform Your Hiring Process Tune in to the latest episode of Scaling UP! H2O to dive deeper into these insights and more from Tim Fulton. The challenge is to ask your customer what you can do better? I mean to walk up to your customer, look them in the eye, tell them not to hold back, and ask them what you could be doing better for them. If they give you positive feedback, great! If they unload all their pent up frustration upon you. Thank them for taking the time and caring enough to share their thoughts with you. Then take the time to give careful consideration to the feedback you received, even if it offends you at first. Try to have empathy with the customer to understand where they are coming from. Then use this moment to grow and become better. Communication is a two-way street, so be sure to let them know how you have reflected upon and implemented any relevant advice. 2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! TODAY'S GUEST Jerry Colonna is the CEO and co-founder of Reboot.io, an executive coaching and leadership development firm whose coaches and facilitators are committed to the notion that better humans make better leaders. For nearly 20 years, he has used the knowledge gained as an investor, an executive, and a board member for more than 100 organizations to help entrepreneurs and others to lead with humanity, resilience, and equanimity. He's been called the CEO Whisperer and the Coach with the Spider Tattoo, and has taken refuge in the Buddhist dharma tradition. Previous to his career as a coach, he was a partner with JPMorgan Partners (JPMP), the private equity arm of JP Morgan Chase. And before that, had launched Flatiron Partners with partner, Fred Wilson. Flatiron became one of the most successful, early-stage investment programs in the New York City area. Today, he lives in Boulder, Colorado. EPISODE SUMMARY In this conversation we talk about: COVID, and how it exposed the interdependence, but also the inequality of American society. Leadership in the context of the Ukraine war, and how when leaders don't address their vulnerable and wounded parts, that expresses itself in violence. We discuss that in the context of malignant narcissism with Putin, and also with Trump. His childhood, and how he became keenly aware of how people around him are feeling. His career in venture, and how he veered from that into coaching. My therapy session, where he points his radical inquiry, his coach mind, at me. My tendency to hide, to not want to be very active on social media, at least not publicly on Twitter. My fear of being judged, and my fears of not being seen or appreciated. What it means to bring your whole self to every challenge in your life, at work, and at any other moment. How everything is an opportunity for self growth, and to practice that. His reboot system and method, and his book. How everybody in life is basically looking for love, safety, and belonging. We had this conversation in mid-March 2022, and that was two years into the worldwide outbreak of COVID, and a couple of weeks into Russia's invasion of Ukraine. I was excited and nervous to talk to Jerry, who's famous for making podcasters cry. We also had a brief chat months before preparing for this interview and I already had a taste of his radical inquiry approach to coaching. So as expected, this did not end up being a regular interview. While we got to explore his history and his ideas and his childhood a little bit, Jerry turned his radical inquiry on me as expected. And you'll get to hear a pretty detailed coaching/therapy session on this podcast and dive deeper into my fears and insecurities along the way. I have to say, I found it deeply therapeutic, both at the time, and now weeks later when I relisten. This was a very different, very meaningful process for me, and I hope that you'll find it beneficial as well. It definitely affected the way that I approach putting myself out there and allow myself to be more visible on social media. Shortly after this interview was recorded, I definitely did start being more vocal and an amazing thing happened. As I started being more vocal on Twitter and other platforms, we got more and more downloads for this podcast and the podcast started growing very, very rapidly. And so I owe a big thank you to Jerry for challenging my assumptions and helping me pinpoint these insecurities. Jerry assured me that this is helpful to other people to hear. So I really hope that will prove true, and that you'll find this episode really helpful to you in your journey as well. This conversation with Jerry is one of a dozen or so weekly conversations we already have lined up for you with thinkers, designers, makers, authors, philosophers, entrepreneurs, and investors who are working to change our world for the better. So follow this podcast on your favorite podcast app, or head over to remakepod.org to subscribe. And now let's jump right in with Jerry Colonna. School leaders who want to build a strong school brand recognize the importance of learning specific skills to do so effectively. This month Joe and T.J. offer two books that reinforce their 5 ways that school leaders can think like a marketer and tell your school's story. Culture is King--Marketing is about who you are, not what you are Great Brands Make a Difference--Marketing is about innovation and leadership First Follows Matter--Marketing is about knowing “the others” Stand Out Amongst the Crowd--Marketing is about being unique Show Up Regularly--Marketing is about being consistent Joe's Pick: The Power of Small: Why Little Things Make All the Difference Featured Authors: Linda Kaplan Thaler & Robin Koval Joe is a huge fan of Thaler and Koval's work. The Power of Small is born from the genius that has birthed some of the greatest marketing advertising campaigns that we are familiar with. The simple mention of Aflac and our mind immediately goes to the duck. Enough said, they've done their jobs. What's special about this book, though, is that it IS NOT a how-to book, but rather a book filled with stories that showcase the right mindset in order to be successful. We can't ignore the details, the small things, and the discreet chances of success. T.J.'s Pick: This is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn to See Featured Authors: Seth Godin T.J. may be Seth Godin's biggest fan, and This is Marketing is definitely one of his favorite books. The power in Godin's work is how he frames marketing. He explains that it's not just about selling “soap.” Instead, marketing is really about solving a problem. Godin talks about how the leader is someone who is willing to do something that might not work and how that changes the culture forever. Most importantly, Godin breaks down marketing in five crystal clear steps that you won't want to miss. He skillfully acknowledges the traps that we all fall into without being offensive or condescending to his readers. He doesn't just highlight our mistakes but encourages us and provides a great path forward. “Ship the work!” “Ship it!” Technical Tip for Leaders Who Read Each month, Joe and T.J. leave listeners with a tip. Both of these books should be read patiently and studied all the while. Joe mentions the art of Sacred Reading and how monks studied the bible to truly understand what they were experiencing. Although these aren't holy texts, the idea is to fully embrace what you are reading so that you are a different person when you are done. Enjoy both of these books to lead better and grow faster as school leaders. We always appreciate a like, a follow, a comment, or a share. Let us know what you're reading by contacting us at contact@theschoolhouse302.com. And don't miss our leadership newsletter every week by subscribing on the site. We can't wait to hear from you. *The old-world method of mass advertising through TV and radio was hugely successful for big corporations. With the arrival of the internet, everything changed. *Traditional marketing is about trying to sell something to someone, trying to get something out of them. The new way is almost the opposite. It's about generosity, listening, and making a connection that lasts. *New opportunities now exist for anyone to reach an audience with a new idea, cause or product launch. If you care enough about your audience to create true connection you can make change happen. *Marketing should always be about the customer's problem, not helping the company to make more sales. That sounds counterintuitive, but it's only through generosity and genuine interest in people that you can make your message or product succeed. *This book's subtitle, You Can't be Seen Until You Learn to See, reinforces the idea that marketing should be grounded in empathy. Using love as a business strategy might seem like a strange title - especially coming from an engineer. Generally speaking we technical people are pretty much just the facts. The talk of soft skills and focusing on people makes me squeamish - so to start talking about loving your customer is really a leap - for me anyway. Over the past few months, I keep hearing pastors talk about being called to love one another. Yes, if you look that up in the Bible - you might find it a time or two - so not really a surprise to hear it. But perhaps I just now have started to hear it clearly. So I have been thinking - what does this mean for me as a university faculty and business owner. We have been talking a lot about this inside the business - so much that "love the customer" is becoming a theme. Using Love as a Business Strategy Loving the customer means... Loving your customer means knowing your customer. Loving your customer means tuning into their frustrations and needs. Loving your customer means treating them like you would want to be treated. Loving your customer means people come first. Some observations We like them more. Sales are up. Everyone is happier serving them. Loving them does not mean they want it for free. If you were to tell me ten years ago that I'd have a career in marketing, I would have thought you were crazy! In this episode, I share a little story about this reluctant and apprehensive marketer who had transitioned into becoming an owner of a content marketing agency. The very word “marketing” conjured up negative feelings in the pit of my stomach. But when I made the decision to leave corporate life forever and start my own business, I knew that marketing was a necessary evil. My perception of what marketing is was so closed-minded back then. Fast forward to today, a little over 8 years after I opened my business, and marketing has turned into a career. Listen and you'll learn what triggered my mindset shift and transition into loving the art and community of marketing. Once I realized that you could set up systems to allow people to get to know you and your expertise, grow an audience, and build relationships...selling wasn't “sleazy” at all! It's a natural transition into helping those who need and want your help. What a joy it is to help clients amplify their message to realize their goals. Enjoy! It was my pleasure today to sit down with one of my entrepreneurial heroes, Giovanni Marsico! Giovanni is the founder of the Archangel Summit and the Archangel community, Archangel Academy. Through his work, it is his mission to be able to empower entrepreneurs who are visionaries and have a deep desire to change the world. Through his programming, masterminds, and frankly, his attitude and leadership, Giovanni is shifting an entire generation of entrepreneurs and giving them the tools to take their dreams and turn them into a reality. Our conversation today was epic — just like all the conversations I have with Giovanni! And what I loved the most was that we not only talked about how to eliminate limiting beliefs, but also what we can do as entrepreneurs to dream as big as possible and hone the skills associated with that. He also took us through some of the practical tools that he uses in his own life to take his dreams and enable them to become a reality. Key Takeaways: [1:07] About today's guest, Giovanni Marsico! [2:40] Giovanni takes us through the journey that got him to where he is today. [6:50] As dreamers and visionaries, the dreaming can be the easy part while the actual following-through can be much more challenging. Did Giovanni have the inherent ability to follow-through or did he learn it over time? [9:00] How to become better at dreaming and generating ideas by treating it as a skill. [11:36] What separates a good entrepreneur from a great one? The ability to let go of the things that will not serve you in a bigger way. [13:42] Has anything that Giovanni has created been an accident where he was just iterating and it really took off? [15:50] How did Giovanni begin to build up his network of connecting incredible people together? [19:28] What events and meetups, such as the Archangel Summit, are incredibly important to your journey as an entrepreneur? [24:40] Giovanni gives an overview of the Archangel Summit. [28:14] What is Giovanni dreaming of right now? [31:40] How does Giovanni manage his limiting beliefs and remove the blocks to what he believes is possible? #episodeGBR5 As human beings, we hunger for stories. And yet, most of us are slow to adopt storytelling as a brand strategy. We’ve gotten stuck in the last century of marketing tradition, pushing people to buy what we’re selling with broadcasting. So, how do we learn to create connection with story? To invite customers to see the world the way we do? To build a community around our vision? Dominic de Souza is the creator of Dream Again Marketing, an advertising firm dedicated to helping public speakers grow a tribe, share their message and change the world. Dominic’s path of discovery began at 13 when he wrote his first novel and learned that he could accomplish absolutely anything. He has 14 years of experience in graphic design and a 20-year background in copywriting and storytelling. Dominic started Dream Again to support consultants and speakers in leveraging their stories to spellbind audiences and bring a vision to life. In today's episode, Dominic discusses the growing importance of story in marketing, explaining how social media affords us the opportunity to respond to ads and how storytelling invites us to buy into a community—not just buy a product. He shares the strategy he used to develop his own brand narrative and describes why values are an integral part of storytelling. Listen in for Dominic’s insight around creating connection with an audience and learn to externalize your own stories and lean into the ones that support your vision! In this episode you’ll learn about… Dominic’s harrowing story of nearly being crushed by a cow. The difference between left and right brain communication. How social media gives us the ability to respond to marketing. How stories invite us to accept a worldview or attitude. The strategy Dominic used to develop his brand story. Seth is an entrepreneur, best-selling author, and speaker. He has written 19 best-selling books, publishes one of the most popular marketing blogs, and speaks to audiences around the world. He also founded two companies, Squidoo and Yoyodyne which was acquired by Yahoo. Seth has been inducted into both the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame and the Marketing Hall of Fame. His latest book is called This Is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn to See. Some interesting insights from this episode: In the old days, money bought you attention and you could use that attention to grow your business. Today attention is too precious for you to buy at any cost. Being an effective marketer in this day and age means having the empathy to see what the other person dreams of and what they fear. Since 1997 not one significant brand has been built with consumer advertising. There's no longer any advantage to being a mass marketer. There's only an advantage to being a very specific marketer. If you build a network effect, if you understand people's status roles, if you engage with people where they need to be, with a product or service that helps them get to where they want to go, that is marketing. Marketing is about how human beings are going to interact with what you make and whether or not they will talk about it and miss you if you're gone. The mistake most marketers make is to sell average stuff for average people in an attempt to appease everyone. But what's most important for brand building today is to find a “minimal viable market”. The idea is to pick the smallest possible group of people that can sustain you and delight them so they will then tell their friends and spread the word. A brand is not a logo. Rather, a brand is a promise, an expectation of what you're going to get. People don't generally know what they want. It's our job to watch people, figure out what they dream of, and then create a transaction that can deliver that feeling.

Author of This is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn to See Interview starts at 13:06 and ends at 45:08 “I have a bunch of regrets about how Amazon is steering the boat these days. One of the things I think they dropped the ball on is they've had a hundred opportunities to make Kindle a social platform, and they have dropped it. And they shouldn't, because that is a really useful transformation--to be able to say ‘Where are the other thousand people who highlighted this? How can I have a discussion with them?' That's magic, and you can't do it.” (Photo by Brian Bloom) News Amazon earnings release Om Malik on Amazon earnings release Tech Tip How to load the Google Play Store onto your Fire tablet Interview with Seth Godin Seth Godin's blog and The Marketing Seminar This is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn to See by Seth Godin Genius (formerly known as Rap Genius) commentary by Seth Godin on his book The Purple Cow What to Do When It's Your Turn (and It's Always Your Turn) by Seth Godin The Beginning of Infinity: Explanations That Transform the World by David Deutsch An Analog Novel (3 Book Series) by Eliot Peper Content The Killer Collective by Barry Eisler Music for my podcast is from an original Thelonius Monk composition named "Well, You Needn't." Tech Tip from John Aga When installing the Google Play Store to your Fire tablet, it is important to do it in order as indicated in the article. I downloaded each one with a minute or two between downloads. I have a file manager app on my Fire tablet that not only displays the name of the file but the time the file was downloaded. You have to download them in a specific order then click and execute them in the same specific order. If you down load them a minute or two apart is easier then telling them apart based on their file name. It went smoothly when I did it. I was sure to download the file specified in the article even if I got messages that there was a newer versions available. I do not know if that was important or not but it was the approach I took. It will be important that Google Play Services and the Google Play Store are the first ones updated before downloading any other apps from the Google Play Store. Some time after I have installed the Google Play Store on my Amazon Fire 10" HD tablet, I started to get the message " cannot access the server" whenever I opened the Google Play Store. To resolve this I went into settings, then clicked on Apps and Games, then clicked on Manage All Applications, then clicked on the app Google Play Store. Then I clicked on "clear cache, clear memory, and force stop". I then rebooted my tablet and the problem was gone. If it should happen again I would just repeat these steps to clear it up. Another tech tip: On a separate subject I have notice that sometimes after I have updated one or more apps, one or more apps will move from the SD card back to internal memory. This is easily resolved. First click on settings. Second click on storage. Third all your settings should be set by default to include "install supported apps on your SD card". The other settings you want have on are to download movies, music, photos, personal videos, audiobooks and ebooks to your SD card. About one third down on the storage page the SD card and amount of storage is displayed. Just below that there is a command to "Move Apps to SD Card". Just below that it will either say "0" apps available or it will say if there are one or more apps available to move back to the SD card. Just click on that and it will automatically move any apps that moved back to internal during an app update and move them back to the SD card. This can take just a few seconds or a minute or two depending on how many apps there are to move back to the SD card. It is worth checking this once and awhile to ensure your Amazon Fire Tablet is using all storage in the most effective way possible.

Seth Godin returns to the show to talk to Charlie about his new book, This is Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn to See. They discuss how Seth defines marketing, how changing the wording of your marketing can make a huge impact, and how to measure what’s working in your marketing. Seth also talks about what it was like to be invited to join an organization he was thrown out of a few years back. Key Takeaways: [2:20] - When Seth was first on the show, he had talked about writing a marketing book. The last marketing book that Seth published was 10 years ago. He had started a marketing seminar, and was inspired to bring it to people as a book. [4:05] - We’re in a revolutionary time where everything we know about marketing is completely new, but we’re still talking about marketing like the old way. The book is meant to be a relic that can be shared and discussed with others. [5:55] - Seth was invited back to the Direct Marketing Association after he was kicked out for testifying against spam. It was nice, but the reason Seth does his work is to inspire others with his ideas and give them something to engage with. [7:24] - Books are the foundation of our intellectual life. In an age of podcasts and online courses, books are a physical reminder of the knowledge contained inside. Seth makes the comment that his online courses seem to have a deeper impact on people than his books, but his books allow him to scale the number of people he reaches. [9:40] - Marketers make changes - if you are bringing change to a community by hoping that people will hear your story and change their behavior, you’re a marketer. It is not all about advertising; it has to do with your posture in a community as someone who does work that matters for people who care. Seth redefines marketing as work we do to change our culture. [10:55] - One simple word change can greatly impact your marketing. Instead of thinking of people as prospects, change that to “students”. Marketing then becomes about generosity, and how you can help the student get to where they want to go. This includes being open about what is best for the student - even if it’s someone else’s product - as well as invites awareness to how you can continue to evolve your product. [13:50] - When it comes to artists’ marketing, you have to really think about what you’re selling. Artists aren’t typically just selling a painting; they are selling tension, emotion and status. It is a change that comes when your painting shifts from a hobby to a business. The ideas in the book are similar for non-profits. [16:30] - Once you realize that you are a teacher and a guide, your calling can become more clear. As creatives and businessmen, it’s our job to get our work to the people who need it. You also have to be confident enough in your product that you feel comfortable charging for it. [18:50] - Emotional labor and passion are related, as are authenticity and vulnerability. However, you have to be aware of how you are channeling these things into your product. As a professional, you have to show up even when you don’t feel like it; you have to be consistent in bringing emotional labor to the table. [20:30] - Marketers need to talk less and do more. Generally marketers aren’t allowed to do, and the doers aren’t allowed to market. As marketers, we need to be in charge of customer service, the supply chain, finances, and product development - all of these things are marketing! [22:24] - Digital sharecropping is a social media pattern that makes you cease to be the customer and now you are the product. The platform will try to sell you. Seth describes how he manages his social media platform to avoid digital sharecropping but still reach his audience. [26:10] - Be careful about how you’re using your media and your marketing. There is a difference between conversion media and connection media, and there is a difference between direct marketing and brand marketing. Direct marketing is measurable; you wouldn’t want to try to measure your brand marketing. There is a distinct difference. [30:30] - To build trust, you have to make promises and keep them. To build trust in your insight and wisdom is to have authority. We gain authority by describing our worldview to others and having it resonate. So for a podcast like Charlie’s, he is able to reach people with his own ideas and that’s how he influences his other product. For Seth, his podcast allows him to reach people on another axis of influence (in addition to his blog). [33:10] - For a while, there was a group of people who felt like they needed to hustle, and they asserted that that is what Seth was also doing. That’s not his aim - he would continue to write and produce his podcast even if no one read them. He wrote them to share them with people he cared about. [35:06] - For many authors, as soon as a book is finished they realize things they wished they would’ve included. For Seth, he is very happy with the result of his book. [36:40] - Seth’s hope for readers is that upon finishing the book, they will feel responsible and empowered. The easiest way to begin is to make your audience smaller; this is the biggest and most instantaneous shift presented in the book. [37:45] - Seth’s invitation for listeners: find people who do what you do. Sit down with a small group and tell each other the truth about your marketing. He presents some questions and discussion topics that you could present as a useful step forward. Seth also runs the altMBA, a four-week online leadership and management workshop, and hosts the podcast akimbo. On this episode, we dig into Seth’s new book- This Is Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn to See. We talk about building a tribe, how to earn trust, and the three questions every marketer should ask.
Seth Godin is a bestselling writer, with 18 books and another one coming out on November 13, 2018. His books address various aspects of marketing, advertising, business venturing and leadership. He is also a successful entrepreneur, marketer and public speaker, who became well-known for public speaking when he uploaded his e-book ‘Unleashing the Ideavirus’ and made it available for free. He obtained his MBA degree from Stanford Graduate School of Business and worked as a software brand manager before he started ‘Yoyodyne’, one of the first Internet-based direct-marketing firms. The publicity of his firm compelled big companies like Volvo, Microsoft, Sony Music, etc. to associate with it and in a few years ‘Yahoo!’ bought the company, keeping Godin on as a vice president of permission marketing. Since Seth was last here his altMBA program has graduated over 1000 people. He has also written a new book, This is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn to See, which will be available on November 13. Whether you realize it or not, you are always marketing yourself. You will be judged by everyone who interacts with you. Based on your appearance, your attitude, how you tackle a project, etc... This is why it is so important to market yourself intentionally. Historically, people worked at the same location for 40 years and you could get to know people slowly over the years. Now, people are on various social media platforms, they are working virtually with people around the world. This requires people to constantly be aware of how they are perceived. Seth says it is the wrong approach for organizations to tell their employees to be authentic and transparent, because essentially it is a lie. He says, “We make choices all the time of things we can and cannot do. I don’t even know what authentic means. I know what consistent means – you made a promise of how you will behave. But you really can’t do whatever you want.” For example, you can’t just show up to work wearing footie pjs and take a nap from 11am-1:00pm, even if that is authentically you. What is a better approach rather than saying ‘be authentic’? Seth says it is about making promises and keeping them. Remove the ‘marketing language’ of be authentic because it doesn’t work. “It’s not a family, it’s work.” Be clear– words matter because they remind us of other things. One example, people have different interpretations of the term ‘family’ so it might not be best to use the word family to describe the workplace environment. How do you start how to market yourself? First you need to answer the question, what promise are you willing to keep? Make a promise to a partner or boss that you are eager to keep and consistently live up to it. This guarantees you a successful career - or relationship. What you will learn in this episode: What Seth has been up to in the year since he was last on the show Why he has 233 Grateful Dead albums Why telling employees to be authentic is not the right approach for organizations How we market ourselves Seth’s experience working with science fiction writer, Isaac Asimov Contact: sethgodin.com This episode of The Future of Work Podcast was made possible by our friends at ServiceNow. This Is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn to See by Seth Godin Click here to view the show notes! https://www.salesartillery.com/marketing-book-podcast/this-is-marketing-seth-godin Seth Godin has taught and inspired millions of entrepreneurs, marketers, leaders, and fans from all walks of life, via his blog, online courses, lectures, and bestselling books. He is the inventor of countless ideas and phrases that have made their way into mainstream business language, from Permission Marketing to Purple Cow to Tribes to The Dip. Now, for the first time, Godin offers the core of his marketing wisdom in one compact, accessible, and timeless package. This is Marketing shows you how to do work you're proud of, whether you're a tech startup founder, a small business owner, or an executive at a large corporation. Great marketers don't use consumers to solve their company's problem; they use marketing to solve other people's problems. Their tactics rely on empathy, connection, and emotional labor instead of attention-stealing ads and spammy email funnels. When done right, marketing seeks to make change in the world. No matter what your product or service, this book will teach you how to reframe how it's presented to the world, in order to meaningfully connect with the people who want it. Seth employs his signature blend of insight, observation, and memorable examples to teach you: * How to build trust and permission with your target market. * The art of positioning--deciding not only who it's for, but who it's not for. * Why the best way to achieve your marketing goals is to help others become who they want to be. * Why the old approaches to advertising and branding no longer work. * The surprising role of tension in any decision to buy (or not). * How marketing is at its core about the stories we tell ourselves about our social status. You can do work that matters for people who care. This book shows you the way.
This week’s “Marketing Today” features a very special guest. Alan talks with Seth Godin, author of 18 best-selling books, including “Free Prize Inside,” “Purple Cow,” and “The Dip.” And now he’s written a new one: “This Is Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn to See.” In his conversation with Alan, Godin discusses his new book and what it’s about: creating change and a modern way of thinking about marketing. Godin also touches on Nike and Colin Kaepernik, Brexit, and why, when trying to reach people, it’s important not to try to transform them or get them to admit they’re wrong, but simply to dance with them. And while he is a best-selling author and thought leader, Godin considers himself, first and foremost, a teacher. “I decided a bunch of years ago that I was a teacher,” says Godin. “And I decided that the best, most comfortable way for me to teach would be to notice things and try to explain them. And, if I do it well, people will say, ‘Well, of course.’ And that’s the goal — to uncover the obvious in a way that once people see it, they can’t unsee it.” You can find excerpts from Godin’s latest book and a video explaining why he wrote it here. Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Godin on his new book: “Writing a book is painful. Publishing a book is even more painful.” (1:32) The tendency of marketers to race to the bottom. (3:22) Godin discusses the ways polarization manifests itself in society and how to think about it. (7:06) Focusing on what’s easy to measure instead of focusing on what’s important — Godin’s take on capitalism and culture. (14:29) “Stories are more powerful than proof.” (19:36) From aerospace servotronic controls to ski bindings: Godin discusses how a chain of events when he was 14 years old led to the way he still builds his projects today. “We are flying too low. We built this universe, this technology, these connections, this society, and all we can do with it is make junk? All we can do with it is put on stupid entertainments? I’m not buying it.” Seth Godin is wise and infectiously curious about life, the internet, and everything. He was one of the first people to name the “connection economy.” And even as we’re seeing its dark side, he helps us hold on to the highest human potential the digital age still calls us to. His daily blog is indispensable reading for many of us. He’s a long-time mentor to Krista. This interview happened in 2012. Seth now has a new podcast, “Akimbo,” and a new book coming out, “This Is Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn to See.” Seth Godin writes the wildly popular daily, Seth’s Blog. What does it mean to become embodied? Why is it important and how does one go about doing it?Today my guest, Mark Walsh, takes us on his own journey of becoming embodied.---First off, a giant thank-you to my sponsor:Somatic ExperiencingTrauma may be a fact of life, but it doesn’t have to be a life sentence. Somatic Experiencing is a psychobiological method of addressing clients’ physical and emotional trauma conditions, and helps to give voice to their experiences without a need for them to retell the story.SE was founded by Dr. Peter Levine, author of the bestseller Waking the Tiger, who developed Somatic Experiencing based on explorations of how animals deal with threat, nervous system overwhelm, and traumatic experiences on a daily basis.SE focuses on regulation of the nervous system and offers the opportunity to engage, complete, and resolve the body’s instinctual responses to traumatic experiences. For more information regarding Somatic Experiencing and the SE professional training program, please visit: traumahealing.org/TTP---Mark is the founder of The Embodied Facilitator Course, Embodied Yoga Principles, The Embodiment Podcast and The Embodiment Conference. With an honours degree in psychology, 20+ years of yoga experience and an aikido black belt, he has dedicated his life to embodied learning. These days, he teaches and mentors young embodiment teachers all over the world.
