We’re in a covid cocoon right now and many people have made the mistake of putting their business fundamentals on pause. We have one of two choices, we can let this pandemic stop us from growing, or we can work on ourselves, nurture our relationships, strengthen our safety net, and come out of this stronger. If we get into concentration and focus now, we are guaranteed to always be in momentum under any market condition. What are some of the key areas loan officers have been overlooking because of the pandemic and the busy refi market? Why is it so important to nurture relationships with Realtor partners right now? In this episode, mortgage industry author, speaker, consultant, and entrepreneur Jen Du Plessis talks about how we can be more intentional about the fundamentals of our business. Three Things You’ll Learn In This Episode How to take ownership for not nurturing your relationships: Many loan officers could have done a better job at keeping in touch with their Realtor business partners this year, and we should own that. When we do reach out, it’s okay to admit that. It’s more honest and authentic, and people will appreciate it. Why we have to have a database of people we like: The majority of your deals next year are in the loans you’ve done before, not just for repeat business, but for referrals. That’s why we need to stay in touch with our database of past clients. The problem is, we’re often held back from getting in touch with our database because of one or two people we don’t like. Remove those people from your database so that you want to get in touch with everyone else. How to interrupt bad habits: Creating better habits is the key to growing through the covid crisis. We have to recognize a bad habit and shift by replacing it with a good habit. If we gamify our ability to stick to good habits, we can make positive changes. Guest Bio: Jen is an author, speaker, consultant, and entrepreneur in the mortgage industry. She is also the principal and Kinetic Spark Consulting. Jennifer began her career in 1983. The momentum of the current real estate market has created unprecedented production for mortgage professionals, but this short-term gain cannot be confused with long-term sustainability. The LOs that don’t have the safety net of a solid business underneath that momentum are not only at risk of a collapse, they are also experiencing significantly higher rates of burnout. People simply weren’t prepared for the rapid ramp-up of a low-interest market and while the volumes have been great, we can’t overlook the negative impacts. Even in an incredible market, we can’t ignore the challenges loan officers are facing. What are some of the specific things that are leading to the massive burnout we’re seeing in our industry? How can we mitigate the emotional and psychological effects of this market? In this episode, mortgage industry author, speaker, consultant, and entrepreneur Jen Du Plessis returns to Beyond Mortgage. She talks about common mistakes people are making in this high production market, and how she’s coaching people around them. Three Things You’ll Learn In This Episode The challenges presented by a really good market: Loan officers experienced an explosion in production. If you haven’t formulated an actual business practice, you’ll end up reacting, and not actually concentrating on sustainable business practices. Not only is this leading to burnout, it also means this short-term success will eventually collapse and hurt you in the long run. How to build a more balanced life: We have a tendency to build the business to make it the strongest part of our lives, then allow for everything else to form around it. We need to invert that and make our health and relationships the center and the strong part, and build the business around those fundamentals. The connection between the virtual workplace and burnout: Human beings don’t just communicate with words, we also communicate non-verbally. When the world shifted into a virtual workspace, we were cut off from a huge portion of what makes us communicate more effectively. To counter this, we should never do a call without video, we should always position ourselves in the center of the screen, and be more animated when we talk. In this interview, Melissa and Albert talk about how Melissa did to become this month's top performer closing 10 deals. Melissa talks about her past work before working in the mortgage industry, working in Corporate America feeling very comfortable making $50-60K a year, having a 401K and benefits. Buying a home in her 20s and selling it in her late 20s and making $150K. Traveled a lot and losing all the money. She talks about how buying a home was an impulsive decision and not really overthinking. And starting at The Mortgage Guys in 2017 after spending all her money from the property. Melissa talks about feeling in a shell and not taking action even though she had the information. Melissa talks about her social media audience being mainly single moms and how this medium has helped her the most leads that later turned into clients. She talks about hiring a person and how that was extremely important to have her biggest month. Having the courage to go out and execute. Melissa then talks about affirmations and dream boards and how powerful they are. Hard work and super clean on what she wanted. It's not rocket science. Many middle-aged people I talk to feel stuck, whether it’s in their relationships, finances or health. What is causing this struggle? What are some of the steps we can take to overcome it? On this episode, mortgage industry veteran, author, trainer, and coach, Jen Du Plessis, shares how to avoid plateauing in business and life. Three Things We Learned From This Episode Why you need long-term goalsWithout a long-term goal you are more likely to get sucked into market trends, get caught up in spending money now instead of saving for the future. If we come up with a long-term goal, everything makes it so much easier. It creates clarity on the mission. What’s causing many people to feel stuck A lot of people are stuck because for the longest time, business came easy. Now things are more challenging and people who have been doing it for a long time are exhausted. To overcome it, we have to keep working hard and improving ourselves. Customer service vs. customer experienceMany people are too focused on customer service, but not on the customer experience. Customer service is the job, it’s what you do. Customer service goes above and beyond that, it’s about how you make them feel and what they say to about you to everyone else. The reason so many people are struggling to keep going in a changing industry is that they don’t want to bear down and really improve themselves. If you don’t do this, you won’t stick around and make it another 5,10 or 15 years. The market we’re in requires three things: hard work, building relationships and constantly striving to improve and get better. I had dinner with Gary Vee last week, and I'll tell you all about it. On Jan 17th, I had the honor of speaking at Gary Vee's Agent2021 marketing event in Miami. It was an incredible event, and I learned far more than I ever thought I would. This week, I'm breaking down what I learned at Agent2021. All the key takeaways, all the amazing lessons, giving context to everything I learned. If you weren't able to make it to Agent2021 this year, you'll get brought up to speed on what was most impactful and most important. Spoiler alert: the #1 thing was that none of us, not even Gary Vee (according to him) is putting out enough content. We all need to do more content, more often, on more platforms. Facebook Ads were a big topic as well. When asked what he'd do if he started his own real estate brokerage tomorrow, Gary Vaynerchuk said he'd spend as much money as he possibly could on Facebook Ads. They're still just so undervalued, and so powerful. This was super validating for what we do and provide for real estate agents and loan officers with our Massive Agent Society. Then, the night before the event, I was blessed enough to have a chance to sit next to Gary Vee at dinner for 20-25 min. My good friend and Industry Syndicate co-founder Phil Treadwell was there as well, and luckily most everyone else at the table was pretty shy. We got to ask him about the Industry Syndicate, how to deal with stress, and just deeper dives into content creation and how to build a big personal (or team) brand. The relationship between agent and LO can be a beautiful one! In fact it's better when it's that way. So here are three tips from a loan originator to keep in mind when working with clients and lenders.
In the current challenging mortgage market and with only a couple months of 2018 remaining, the importance of goal setting carries more weight than many Loan Originators may realize. In this episode, Greg shares his experience with goal setting, highlighting the importance of starting early, finding a focus, and including both personal and business goals that are attainable and measurable. Do not procrastinate! Guarantee your business and personal success by focusing your goals on achievable and measurable results.
Phil has extensive lending knowledge and experience, thankfully he’s here to share some of that knowledge with us today. He spends most of his time opening branches and coaching originators. Needless to say, he knows a lot about what originators are looking for when they are qualifying you. If you enjoyed today’s episode remember to subscribe in iTunes and leave us a review! For many LOs, the beginning of every year is “Day One” in business. How do we get longevity and steady growth? What are habits and activities necessary for success? How do we break our threshold and grow with systems and leverage? On this episode, we talk to Jen Du Plessis about her incredible 35 years in the business and what she’s learned from this time. We need to be accumulating properties and personal and professional growth year after year so that we can expand our business. -Jen Du Plessis Three Things We Learned From This Episode Ethics are necessary for longevity There are many people in our industry who walk the line of ethics. But if we want any sustainability, it’s all about being ethical, because it will all come back to us. Take care of our brand, it’s precious. We need to buy our own product It doesn’t make sense for us to encourage people to buy homes and to help them if we don’t also do the same. It’s critical to have some kind of investment property, that’s how we create predictable income. Find our superpower and maximize The trifecta of success is doing what we love, what we’re excellent at and what makes financial sense for us. Being able to find out what this is gives us a superpower can leverage. There are two types of loan officers; those who have been in the business for 10 years but start over every single year, and those who grow steadily year after year. Who we are and where we are is determined by what we do. Our activities feed our goals and determine whether we achieve them. Successful people break down negative habits, replace them with good habits and stick to their routine. That’s what it takes to achieve longevity in this business! Next is Alice Alvey of Union Home providing a regulatory & legislative update followed by Sam Garcia of Mortgage Daily giving us a quick overview of the latest news stories impacting our industry. Then we wrap up the first half the program with Andy Schell, a/k/a “Profit Doctor” sharing ideas on how to improve your bottom line. Created BY mortgage professionals FOR mortgage professionals, our commitment is to bring to you, our listener, a fast-paced and highly informative 1-hour audio update on the important news and issues facing the mortgage industry.
