117 - Good Deal or Bad Strategy? The Right Way to Use Loss Leaders

Sports Marketing Machine Podcast

Send us a textIn this episode of The Sports Marketing Machine Podcast, host Jeremy Neisser breaks down one of the most misunderstood tactics in sports marketing: the loss leader. While promotions like $1 hot dogs or “Kids Eat Free” nights can pack the stands and drive in-game revenue, not every deal is a good deal. Jeremy explains how smart promotions protect perceived value, generate buzz, and increase total spend — while bad ones can erode your brand and season ticket strategy. Learn which deals drive revenue, which ones backfire, and how to craft promotions that make fans feel like they scored — without your team taking a loss.✅ Top TakeawaysNot Every Deal Is a Good Deal: Free or steeply discounted offers can do more harm than good.Loss Leaders Should Drive Spend: The goal isn't cheap tickets — it's getting fans in the door to spend more.Perception Is Everything: A $1 hot dog feels like a steal; a free ticket feels like a handout.Avoid Undermining Value: Don't train fans to wait for discounts — protect your full-price strategy.Use Promotions to Increase Per Cap: Target food, drink, and merchandise add-ons that drive incremental revenue.Track the Right Metrics: Redemption rates and per-cap spending are your best indicators of success.Smart Bundles Win: Pair tickets with value-added incentives (not price cuts) to boost attendance and loyalty.

Most dentists think offering a discount is the same as running a strategic loss leader—but they couldn't be more wrong. Coupons and loss leaders are two completely different things, yet many practices treat them as one and the same. Here's the reality: coupons are just discounts—Think Groupon. Loss leaders, on the other hand, are strategic pricing tools designed to bring in the right patients and lead to higher-value treatments. One devalues your services; the other sets you up for long-term success. If you don't understand this difference, you're probably leaving money on the table—or worse, training patients to expect cheap dentistry. In this episode, we're going to break down why dentists keep getting this wrong and how you can fix it.Connect with our Host Here ⤵️Gary BirdOwner of SMC NationalWebsite: https://smcnational.com/Website: https://thegarybird.com_________Join Gary Bird, founder of 3x Inc. 5000 fastest-growing company, SMC National, as he shares proven dental marketing strategies to attract a steady stream of new patients. Universities dole out more than half of the revenue they collect from tuition in the form of discounts and financial aid in their efforts to attract students. The US average is 56 percent. If a private company discounted its products by more than half, it would probably go out of business. So why do colleges use this self-destructive business model that leaves many prospective students thinking college costs more than it does? We explore.

This shift in strategy capitalized on the existing benefits provided to clients and ensured fair compensation for their efforts. Key Points Discussed: Early Start of Black Friday Sales: The episode begins with an observation on how Black Friday sales now start early, expanding beyond a single day to encompass an entire week or more.Psychology of Black Friday: The host delves into the psychological aspects of Black Friday, highlighting how deep discounts create a sense of scarcity and urgency. This is exemplified by limited-quantity offers, which are a common tactic used by retailers.Loss Leaders and Consumer Behavior: The discussion moves to the concept of loss leaders used by large retailers, where high discounts on popular items are used to draw customers in, hoping they purchase other full-priced items.Consumer Frenzy and Safety Concerns: The podcast touches on the extreme consumer behavior often seen during Black Friday sales, including dangerous situations like stampedes.Challenges for Small Businesses: The host challenges small business owners to reconsider jumping on the Black Friday bandwagon, especially given the difficulty of competing with large retailers on price.Bandwagon Effect and FOMO: The episode discusses the bandwagon effect and the fear of missing out (FOMO), which are powerful drivers of consumer behavior during sales like Black Friday.Perceived Value and Pricing Strategies: The host talks about the concept of perceived value in pricing and how it can be used effectively in sales strategies.Financial Impact on Small Businesses: There's a focus on the financial implications for small businesses participating in Black Friday, emphasizing the need to balance attractive discounts with maintaining healthy profit margins.Differentiation Strategies: The podcast suggests alternative strategies for small businesses, like community engagement, personalized services, and value-added offerings instead of deep discounts.Post-Black Friday Strategies: The importance of strategies for the period after Black Friday is highlighted, including follow-up marketing and leveraging consumer data to prepare for the rest of the holiday season.Inventory and Supply Chain Management: The host advises careful consideration of inventory and supply chain management, especially in light of potential high demand during the sale period.Leveraging Consumer Attention: The episode concludes with advice on leveraging the heightened consumer attention during Black Friday, even if a business chooses not to offer significant discounts. This includes effective email marketing and strategic product offerings. Conclusion: The podcast emphasizes that while Black Friday is a significant retail event, small businesses don't necessarily have to conform to the standard practices of deep discounting to capitalize on this period. Instead, they can employ alternative strategies that align better with their business model and customer base.

Undervaluing the enormous amount of time, experience, equipment, prep, and patience it takes to teach scuba courses is killing the dive industry, and the customers and recreational divers out there get hit the hardest. Mike and Kenny get to the very core of the dive industry's lack of growth, when compared with similar industries. Further, this same root cause is why so few people keep diving after they get scuba certified.  This cycle creates burnout on the Instructors and Divemasters, and sets up students to fail at their ultimate original goal: Confidence to be a scuba diver (aka the lifestyle). While many may still "catch the bug" in a basic discounted course, most either have to find additional training/guidance or simply never go diving again. This is mainly due to rushed courses, and lack of personal attention. The “2 year burnout cycle" of the scuba instructor is caused by not charging what they're worth, getting overworked with too many students, dive shops not not having the time to form lasting bonds, and ultimately not nurturing divers into this incredible world.  Increased value increases value… for EVERYONE.  — Michael Kest is a jury trial attorney with his own practice. He's an active dive instructor with experience that ranges from working dive boats in South Florida and Hawaii, water safety at Sea World and Disney's Dive Quest, working for dive shops and teaching classes all over the world. He coaches kids sports on his spare time, and is a father of three. — Kenny Dyal is the host of The Scuba Diving Podcast: TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kenny_dyal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sweetwater_scuba LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kennydyal Twitter: https://twitter.com/RealKennyDyal www.sweetwaterscuba.com

Owning a wedding venue is a highly competitive business. As a venue owner, an easy way to stand out from your competition is by offering a loss leader on your website. A loss leader is a product or service sold at a lower price point to attract clients. At your wedding venue, the loss leader could be an add-on service, such as a discount on your in-house rental products, a free night's stay at your onsite accommodations, or, our favorite, a digital product that you create once and sell over and over again.  Even if a couple doesn't book your venue, they may still be interested in your loss leader product leading to additional sales and profits for your business. It's important to note that the loss leader should still be profitable, even if it's sold at a lower price point. When deciding on a loss leader, choose a product or service that is still profitable and adds value to the wedding experience.  DM us on Instagram @thevenuepodcast Contact Lindsay or Kinsey:  hello@thelindsaylucas.com kinsey@shecreatesbusinesspodcast.com

On tomorrow's Ag Business Episode I am profiling a very impressive entrepreneur with a passion for wool. I also have a passion for wool, which was reflected in this solo episode from 2019.  Below are the original show notes: Show Notes Me and the whole family were back up in the Wood River Valley of Idaho this weekend so that I could elk hunt.  It just so happened that a friend of ours had a condo available that they could not use this weekend. So, the whole family was able to go. I hunted during the days, and I was able to hang out with Autumm and Hattie in the evenings.  Because of the short days, we actually ended up with quite a bit of time together, so it worked out really well. For my outdoor clothing I prefer to wear wool to any other fabric, natural or man made.  After this weekend, I really want to solute all those farmers who are producing wool.  On my first evening I got my pickup stuck and was out in the middle of nowhere in a snow storm for quite a while.  I was dressed in wool base layers, socks, pants and a heavy wood sweater.  I was dry and warm, and the wind just did not have that much impact on me. The next two days I spent climbing steep slopes in about 2 feet of snow in pursuit of these elusive big game animals.  Between taking every step knee deep into snow and laying prone in the snow several times I never got cold or wet.  The wool clothing did just as advertised, and I could not have been more pleased.  This miracle fabric is an excellent investment! In this episode, we'll take a break from reading weird, obscure comics like Jim Lee's X-Men in favor (kidding) in favor of watching WarnerMedia's presumptive blockbuster WW84, the sequel to 2017's Wonder Woman. What worked? What didn't? And to what extent did viewing it on a streaming platform in our living rooms, rather than being enraptured in a theater, dampen our enjoyment?

Me and the whole family were back up in the Wood River Valley of Idaho this weekend so that I could elk hunt.

Deliver on Your Business is a weekly podcast, however we are in the middle of our 31 Day Courier MBA series - Mastering Your Business Attitude. We will publish a blog post each day that has the same general information, though not necessarily word for word.I do recommend you look at earlier episodes in this series, as they do lay a foundation for future episodes.Today's episode page can be found here.Today we're talking about the Loss Leader principle, used especially in retail. Think of Black Friday sales with super cheap merchandise. Retailers will sell a small number of items at little or no profit, sometimes at a loss, to bring people in the door. The idea is that when you come in and shop you will buy other things and they'll make more profit in the end than if they didn't sell these items so cheap. As delivery drivers for Grubhub, Postmates, Doordash, Uber Eats, Caviar, etc., we can utilize the loss leader principle. While we preach being selective with orders at the EntreCourier, there are times that a low or no profit order can lead to greater profitability. Some scenarios include:A delivery that helps get you to somewhere you want to be - such as a more profitable part of town, or it takes you home at the end of the dayA delivery that fills a gap, such as one that can be filled while waiting for another order to be readyA smaller delivery in a stacked orderA delivery that helps you fulfill a promotion, bonus or incentive. We recommend that you carefully weigh all deliveries. Most will stand on their own, but their are times where normally unprofitable deliveries DO help increase profits. We examine questions you can ask yourself about deliveries.Don't go on hope, people. Don't take a low pay order just hoping there might be an extra tip. Make decisions based on your understanding of the market, on things that are more likely to happen, not on what might. Some of the previous episodes mentioned in today's episode:Episode 4: Know your marketEpisode 9: Use the 40 Cent Rule to make business decisionsEpisode 12: Setting your price by accepting and rejecting ordersEpisode 14: Using multiple applicationsA full list of past and previous episodes in the Courier MBA Series can be found here.

First, identify your top 10% customers in terms of Customer Lifetime Value. Once you know who these customers are, find out the initial products they purchased with you. Look for products that they bought for their first purchase with you. Then, rank these products according to how many top customers bought it. The more it was purchased by the top 10% customers, the higher it’ll go up in your list. Will a single product top the list? Or will you identify a product bundle that most customers buy because it provides the most value for their money? You’ll only find out once you do this exercise. Knowing which of your products are loss leaders enables you to strategize a marketing strategy that works in your favor. You can push your loss leaders to a prospect who’s recently signed up for your mailing list. After all, you may just break even on your loss leader’s sale, but theoretically, this first-time customer will also make repeated purchases over time, based on the purchase history of your top spenders. There’s no second-guessing or blindly hoping for the best scenario here. You’re promoting your loss leader simply because they promote sales -- just refer to the abovementioned exercise that you need to do before implementing this strategy. Remember: numbers, like Shakira’s hips, don’t lie. Now, if you’re not a fan of discounting, it’s okay. The key here is to expose your prospects to your loss leaders as soon as possible. While your prospects are browsing on your website, redirect their attention to your loss leaders. During this time, they’re highly engaged so they’re more likely to check it out. If they haven’t made a purchase yet, you can also send them a follow-up email. A simple “Hey, just wanted to check in on you. By the way, most of our customers bought this product. Here’s what they have to say about it. You may be interested…” can get the ball rolling in the direction that you’d like. Of course, if you’ve identified a product bundle as your best-selling item, you can also send them product pitches about those as historically speaking, they’ve already been effective in increasing your Customer Lifetime Value over time. So there you go! As of this writing, you can do the exercise manually since there’s no tool available for it yet. And if you’ve reached the end of this post and you’re excited to develop a tool that helps does this efficiently and effortlessly, let me know in the comments below! I’ll totally share it with you guys. See you next week!

Coupons and discounts CAN be very powerful when it comes to getting new customers, generating cashflow and boosting sales... but we are putting a BIG asterisk on today’s episode that says - you must use this tactic VERY strategically! It’s not the only tool in your toolbox when it comes to getting your market to buy from you. Because what can happen is that you’re not getting the sales you want or you are thinking up ideas for a new campaign and it can be REALLY easy to jump to offering 20% off or providing some other discount as your first idea, when you really don’t have to… and when doing so could actually HURT your business rather than help it. So you want to be really clear about WHY and WHEN you offer a discount or coupon. 3 bold predictions for the next 5 years: Subscription Overload, Loss Leader Overload and Lifestyle Aggregators. I predict that by the year 2023, everything we use today in day-to-day life, will become subscription based. And because there's going to be an explosion of subscription-based services, there will be what I'm calling Subscription Aggregators. or Sags. And one step up from Sags, will be what I call Lifestyle Aggregators, or Lags. Finally, there's going to be an explosion in Loss Leaders. The Truth About “Going Viral”

Wizard of Ads

Real experts in online marketing rarely use the phrase “going viral,” because it has no agreed-upon definition. Instead, they talk about “Discovery Content” and “Community Content.” To understand Discovery Content, just look at anything posted by https://www.buzzfeed.com/?utm_term=.tuRjxDqxo#.bceqz2Jzd (BuzzFeed) or any of the other organizations whose principal income is generated by the companies who sponsor their clickbait.1 But not all Discovery Content is shallow and vacuous. The goal of Discovery Content is to generate a click. (The headline is the key.) If a customer finds something satisfying on the other side of that click, they're happy-happy-happy. And if your only goal was to get more people to “discover” your website, then you're happy, too. A visitor who “discovers” your website – but never returns – has no value beyond stroking your ego, unless1. their visit brought you ad revenue, or2. they purchased something on which you made a profit, or3. they told other people about you.Used correctly however, Discovery Content brings newcomers to your website where they will “discover” Community Content that truly speaks to them. It is Community Content that will bring them back again. We're talking about Targeting Through Copy Writing rather than Targeting Through Media Selection. Today's Monday Morning Memo is an example of Discovery Content. That headline: The Truth About Going Viral, will doubtless generate a lot more first-time visitors than usual. The Community Content these visitors will find includes the http://www.mondaymorningmemo.com/archives/ (Archives) of the Monday Morning Memo, the Subscribe button, the http://www.mondaymorningmemo.com/rabbithole/ (Rabbit Hole) of Indy Beagle, and all the free Downloads accessible through the nav panel. Discovery Content attracts first-time visitors. It brings people to your website.Community Content builds a tribe. It makes them feel like they belong. But these ideas aren't new. In the wild and woolly world of mass media, the Loss Leader was the original Discovery Content. The advertiser offering a Loss Leader hoped that by selling something at a loss they would explode store traffic and this horde of new visitors would then “discover” the wonder of their store and buy other items at full price. Today's online marketers call the Loss Leader a “tripwire.” 2 But I prefer to target through copy writing, which is why I use full-price Feature Items to attract new members of a tribe instead of cut-rate Loss Leaders that attract grave robbers, vampires, coupon clippers, discount addicts, freebie Freddies, and every other variety of Twitchy Little Bastard. A Case History of Targeting Through Copy Writing:Shreve and Company has been part of the ritzy Union Square district of San Francisco since the California Gold Rush more than 165 years ago. Shreve routinely sells jewelry items that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Due to the rich history of this store and the impact of all the world's-finest brands they carry, they could easily be perceived as stodgy, snooty and overpriced. But they aren't. In the radio campaign for Shreve, 5th generation Shreve jeweler Lawrence “Ren” Schiffman, a young and definitely NOT-stodgy, NOT-snooty 20-something has become the official spokesperson for the family store. Ren's dad is a jeweler, his grandad was a jeweler, his great grandad was a jeweler, and his great-great grandad was a jeweler. Credibility and history wrapped in youth and style. Here's the Example:REN:   Polo is “the sport of kings.” ROY: And in the go-go 80's, the Paiget Polo was the watch of kings. REN:  Having a Piaget Polo was even cooler than having a phone in your car. ROY:  [reflectingly] I remember those days. REN:  The new Polo “S” is...

For example, a home improvement store will sell drywall around cost but they are hoping you will get the drywall mud, tape and tools which typically has a much higher margin thus more profit. You see this with the dollar menu at many fast food places. These items are not high margin but they are gateways to frequency and upgrades or add on items.   Each business needs to have a loss leader or two that they can use in a similar fashion. Your loss leader can do one of the following: Drive traffic to your business since you will be the best price the best in town Be a Project Starter that you can pile on top of Increase frequency of use Let’s take a look at each and what might work for you and your business.   **  For the full show notes click the link below!   HELPFUL LINKS Podcast Website: LocalSmallBusinessCoach.com Leave your Message on the website with the Speak Pipe Button or just email me at Tammy@LocalSmallBusinessCoach.com Episode Show Notes:  Episode 30 - Local Small Business Coach Podcast Our Training Materials for Local Small Business Owners:  TrainingforLocalSmallBusinessOwners.com Starting a Local Small Business Website:  StartALocalSmallBusiness.com

A shopping sniper knows what they want, gets it, and gets out.  We’ll teach you a few tricks to become the shopping sniper with the most confirmed kills. Welcome to your training. I hope you enjoyed the video. But now it’s time to begin. It’s time to know all the secrets on how to spend less money. This is a 2,000-word training manual that will walk you through becoming a Shopping Sniper, and in turn, teach you how to spend less, save more money and allow you to focus on what’s really important. Why Are Americans Addicted to Shopping? You’d think because of the economic crash in 2008 that Americans would be a lot more conscious of their spending. You’d also think Americans would have toned down their shopping just a little bit, but instead, shopping totals have increased. In April of 2013, retail shopping sales increased by 0.1%. Not a huge increase, but an increase nonetheless. We are a culture of consumerism. It’s been ingrained in our DNA to want stuff, to keep up with the Joneses, to “shop till you drop.” It’s no wonder why American’s have trouble saving their money — they’re spending it while they shop. Shopping is so popular that we have TV shows based on it, including: * My Shopping Addiction * Supermarket Sweep * HSN & QVC * Million Dollar Shoppers * Extreme Couponing * The Entire Style Network * Guy’s Grocery Games We are being brainwashed into shopping. Shopping has become a skill and a sport in our country. In fact, the only way to avoid being sold to is to go to sleep. That is until dream TV is invented. Exposing 5 Retail Store Marketing Secrets I’ve been working in retail stores since I was 13 years old. I’ve also spent time as the head of marketing for a chain of retail stores. My job was to make people buy more stuff, and I learned these secrets from the best and the biggest stores in the country. As a former marketing director, I know what goes into making people buy more and buy often. My job was to create colorful circulars (newspaper ads), packed to the brim with coupons. I filmed funny TV commercials, created ads for magazines and spots for radio. I did whatever it took to get my brand in front of your face, over and over again. I’ve learned a lot during my time, and I think it’s time I expose myself…I mean my secrets to retail marketing. Having this knowledge will give you power and make you a better Shopping Sniper Secret #1: No Clocks, No Windows The simple reason for the this is because the stores don’t want you to pay attention to the time. They also don’t want you to realize how nice it is outside. By denying you insights to the outside world, they hope to keep you in the store and shopping longer. They also play very easy-to-listen music throughout the store. This music is meant to put you in a good mood to increase your shopping time. Oh, and they always crank the AC in the summer. Feels so good to shop in the mall during the summer, doesn’t it? Secret #2: Loss Leaders Walmart is well known for this marketing tactic, especially during the holiday season. Loss Leaders are products that are very popular and desirable, so the stores will sell these items at the lowest possible price without losing any money — however, Walmart is known for actually losing money on these items. The trick is to get you into the store by pricing these desirable items so low that you can’t pass up that kind of deal. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
