Summary This essay sheds light on the challenges faced by academics working in public institutions in Nigeria, aiming to provide insight into the limited impact of research in the Nigerian context. Aiming to answer the question, why are we not as impactful as expected? It emphasizes the experiences of researchers from resource-limited situations, with a focus on my personal journey as a Nigerian researcher. Background I graduated from Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka with a Ph.D. in medical microbiology. Currently, I am a lecturer at Plateau State University, Bokkos, Nigeria. In order to finish my Ph.D. study, I spent three months conducting Ph.D. benchwork at Duke University in the United States. I was fortunate to get local funding for my doctorate from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, which enabled me to travel to Duke for my doctorate. Not everyone is that fortunate. People just very rarely receive sponsorship for post-graduate education in our Nigerian setting. Most people finance their postgraduate education on their own. You must pay both your school fees and your research expenses as a postgraduate student in Nigeria. I've begun supervising both undergraduate and graduate students. What I saw at Duke and what I have heard from developed universities is that university supervisors provide their students with research labs and consumables through grants They also offer assistance through post-doctoral training programs after receiving a PhD. The ordinary postgraduate student here is not like that. What ground-breaking outcomes or depth of study will self-funding enable? On the other hand, few students are fortunate enough to receive collaboration for their projects either directly or through the assistance of their supervisors. In my experience as a supervisor, the university system offers me zero financial assistance for my students' projects. What is it like to do research here? Although my experience might not be representative of all academics in Nigeria. It can be used to illustrate what it's like to conduct research in a Nigerian university and what it's like to hold a professorial position there. Very few scholars focus on a certain topic or element. For example. specialist in the development of bacterial cell walls. or something else. The majority of the time, you will find a lecturer's research articles dispersed throughout many areas. What causes this? As a medical microbiologist, I have published in the fields of mycology, virology, and global warming. At the beginning of my work, while pursuing my Masters degree, I isolated Candida africana with the intention of concentrating on it and thoroughly examining its biology and pathology. Because there are no labs in the nation that can do this kind of research, it was not possible. I so gave up on the research part. I then proceeded on to my doctoral work, where I examined the molecular characterization of the environmental Cryptococcus neoformans. This research was at Duke University. When I got home, I had a ton of questions, such as: What causes the genetic diversity of C. neoformans in Nigeria? What impact has rising temperatures had on this species' evolution of virulence? . Rarely will you find a lab where "ordinary" PCR can be performed. How are consumables purchased? Electricity is a problem. I came to the realization that I could neither pursue these inquiries in Nigeria nor the biology of this fungus. If I must continue studying this pathogen, I will be limited to studying its genotype and epidemiology (which requires cooperation with international labs). Bibi June is a poet, producer and theatre maker originally from Amsterdam, now an import Glaswegian. Through personal experience, their work explores narratives of race, queerness, migration and social inequalities. They mix Glasgow’s down-to-earth culture with Dutch directness in an intimate high-energy performance.In spring 2017 they received funding from the Workers Theatre to develop their first show, 'Daughter, Mother, Truth', as part of the Megaphone residency, created to promote artists of colour in Scotland. Their first pamphlet ‘Begin Again’ was published by Speculative Books in December 2017. It is a collection of poems on queer life and happiness. Their work has been published in the Beyond Boundaries, Now That’s What I Call Poetry and We Were Always Here anthologies. In 2018, they were part of the judging panel at the National Scottish Poetry Slam, were selected for the Young Arts Industry Programme at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and received both a Disrupter Grant and a Nurturing Talent fund.They run ‘In The Works’, a spoken word theatre company co-founded with Ross McFarlane and Ellen Renton. ITW was set up to promote innovative spoken word theatre and develop an accessible, diverse and sustainable tradition for the art form. Their first production, A Matter of Time', debuted as part of the Edinburgh Free Fringe 2017. Their second show ‘The 900 Club’ received 4 and 5 star reviews from The Wee Review and The Sunday Post, and SGFringe respectively for its run at the Scottish Poetry Library as part of the Edinburgh Fringe 2018. It has since been performed in Glasgow, Perth and Nottingham. Peter Jesperson is currently the VP of Catalog Production at New West Records, but in the time I have known him he has escaped any nomenclature I would normally use for someone at a record label. The titles that come to mind are more like Chief Fanatic, or Senior Evangelist. To me these better describe the way he talks the work he does. Quite simply put, he is the most passionate music person I know. He exudes a wild enthusiasm and has a reverence for music as a craft unlike anyone else I have ever met. Peter is widely known as one of the founders of the Minneapolis based label Twin/Tone Records that was in operation from 1977 until 1994. The label was home to such acts as The Replacements, Babes in Toyland, The Jayhawks, Soul Asylum and many more. Over the life of the label over 300 records by more than 100 acts were released. In the late 90’s Peter joined New West Records, home to artists such as  Kris Kristofferson, Delbert McClinton, John Hiatt and Dwight Yoakam. In his role in A&R he signed artists like Vic Chesnutt, Chuck Prophet and Ben Lee. I had the good fortune of meeting Peter when our boys began to attend the same school. We hit it off thanks to a shared love of music and literature and I could talk to him for hours about both. A moment that inspired me greatly happened in 2012 when former Replacements guitar player Slim Dunlap had a stroke and Peter put together the non-profit Songs For Slim. This project brought together an incredible array of talent including, The Replacements, Jeff Tweedy, Joe Henry, Lucinda Williams, Jakob Dylan, and more –  all to help Slim and his family. I am really excited to have Peter on the Podcast for two reasons. He has been able to sustain a deep passion for music over the course of a lifetime and continues to share that passion with others. He has an amazing ability to remember not only records, but dates and musicians and producers and can roll them into a tale worth listening to.
