CEOs have it tough. It’s not enough to grow your company into healthy profit margins and then coast along “because it’s working”. I know it’s tempting to kick back and pour the martinis, but comfort is a dangerous position to be in. A great CEO knows this and doesn’t want to be comfortable.  They’ll stay on the bow on the ship, in the storm, telescope in hand, watching the changes in the waves and looking out for even the slightest hint of an iceberg in the distance. Today I want to introduce you to a great CEO and one of my good buddies, Michael Litt. Michael isn’t just the CEO and co-founder of Vidyard, a video hosting platform for businesses… He’s also the co-founder of Garage Capital, a VC firm with over $40M invested in 80+ businesses. A lot of SaaS businesses try to move upmarket over time to higher-paying enterprise customers. Vidyard did almost the opposite, creating a freemium model with a $0 pricing tier and partnering with brands like Adobe, Marketo and Hubspot. As a CEO, steering the ship into a freemium model is… scary.  If it goes wrong, your customers downgrade and you’ve just donated your profit margins. So sitting down with Michael, I wanted to unpack exactly how and why he did this. I’ve got to say… it was executed brilliantly. I’ve known Michael now for nearly 10 years. Being good buds means as soon as I hit record, we got straight to the good stuff chatting about: How Vidyard scaled rapidly as a startup The value of TIME in a commoditized landscape The freemium “land-and-expand” model When to go freemium Getting 2500 PQLs on launch day Building a culture that attracts talent Firing staff if they aren’t a cultural fit The difference in being a founder vs a CEO Leadership is discipline.  The more you can hear from great leaders, the more I believe you’ll embody that discipline and become a great leader yourself. As Jim Rohn said: “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with”. So get your headphones, tune in and spend some time hanging out with us. -- Dan Martell has advised more startups than his hometown has people and teaches startup founders like you how to scale. (Get the free 3 videos to grow your business here.) He previously created, raised venture funding for and successfully exited two tech startups: Flowtown and Clarity.fm. Let’s face it: it’s not hard to list companies that have been big losers in 2020, right? And yet, there have been some bright spots. Zoom has been one of the darlings of 2020, with its live video platform taking off in the early days of the pandemic. And yet, often live video is not the right solution for you at a given moment - just like sometimes it’s better to text than to make a phone call. Michael Litt is the Co-Founder and CEO of Vidyard, which helps with asynchronous video communication (as opposed to requiring you to be available on video in real-time like Zoom). Jeremy spoke to Michael on a wide range of topics, from the value of asynchronous video to growing during a pandemic to the downside of adding yet another tech tool to our arsenals. "I realised in the process of hiring and going from 50 to 200 people, and taking really good individual contributors and making them managers … we didn't really think about firing. [on the reverse freemium] "we try to provide as much valuable value as possible to those end users for free, and then have discussions about upgrading to other features over time. Coming to you live from Dublin where we just wrapped the fourth SaaStock flagship conference, this week's episode is a live interview we recorded with Michael Litt, Co-founder and CEO of Vidyard. This interview was part of the  Podcast stage, where we hosted a plethora of podcasters who interviewed our speakers. Less than a month ago, Michael did something out of the ordinary. While many entrepreneurs start with a Free software offering, then scale into launching Pro and Enterprise solutions, he did the opposite. What happens when you flip the traditional freemium model on its head? What challenges did his company face in scaling this way? How did the team react? How did the market respond? Alex digs into all of these and more. When Michael is not bringing leading video-based technologies to market, he serves as a general partner of Garage Capital, a seed-stage fund focused on Super-Cluster companies looking to expand their networks into Silicon Valley. Hope you enjoy this live show with him. We have three more live episodes coming in the next few weeks.

In this, our 7th growth story, we speak with Michael Litt, Founder and CEO of Vidyard. A veteran of Ycombinator and with over $60m of investment raised, Vidyard is one of the North-American SaaS companies you should be be taking note of. They’re helping their customers use video to tell the narratives behind their business - across the full funnel. We speak with Michael about the power of video and why it’s so powerful - and how that’s being fuelled by the changing demographic of the B2B buyer. We talk Gen Z, their reliance on mobile and how businesses need to start seeing them as the B2B ‘buyers’ now. As they enter the B2B landscape, how they want to communicate now comes into the equations too. A generation that grew up with video at its core (Insta & Snapchat) - we need to take this into account. Video can tell passionate stories and they can help you connect with people as a human - humans love story telling. Selling is two people interacting and many, many businesses forget that.

Dave Grow always considered himself an operator. When he joined Lucidchart seven years ago, shortly after co-founders Karl Sun and Ben Dilts had built the product, he was there to take care of the business side of things. From answering customer support tickets and doing digital marketing to hiring and setting up partnerships, Dave did it all. Currently the company's COO and President, back then he did not dare put a C-level title in front of his name. “I was always convinced that someone more experienced will come down the line who will take it over,” he says. As COO and President, Dave has seen the transformation Lucidchart underwent, from offering freemium plans to single users all the way to signing up Enterprise customers such as Box, Dropbox, Accenture, and Groupon. Listen on to hear: How the pricing plans have evolved to reach 10 million users What are the different GTM strategies to get to that sort of scale and what has worked for Lucidchart? Should SaaS companies nowadays have a Freemium model? How Lucidchart moved upmarket and how they overcame the challenges they faced How to find the intersection between what you love and what brings value to your company P.S. One curious fact that Dave only touches upon is that Lucidchart has not used a cent of the $40 million in funding they raised to fuel that growth. It's one of many topics he will get into detail at his SaaStock18 talk. Joining him will be many other founders and operators we have signed up as speakers such as Michael Litt, founder of Viddyard, David Cancel, founder of Drift and Meagen Eisenberg, CMO of MongoDB. Michael Litt (@michaellitt) is the CEO and co-founder of Vidyard, a leading provider of video hosting software for businesses and the kind of high-growth company you might expect to find in Silicon Valley. Although the company completed the prestigious Bay Area accelerator Y Combinator, it began and continues to operate in Kitchener, Ontario. CEO Michael Litt co-founded Vidyard in 2011, and the company has since raised over $60 million and gained world-class brands like LinkedIn, Lenovo, Sharp, Rockwell Automation, Honeywell and Cengage as customers. Litt credits much of Vidyard’s success to the thriving entrepreneurial communities of Kitchener and nearby Waterloo, as well as the co-op program at his alma mater, the University of Waterloo, that helped him build a company that solved a real business need. Litt and I met last year at the Salesforce user conference, Dreamforce, to record this interview. As we sat in the green room on beanbag chairs, Litt shared some of his most valuable secrets behind Vidyard’s growth. Among them are the foresight he had to take an amazing opportunity over a quick paycheck, his perseverance in the face of investors and customers saying “no,” and of course, the power that video can hold for enterprise businesses. It’s been three years since we caught up with Vidyard’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Litt, so we’ve pulled him into the AQ studio to discuss the dramatic growth and success of the five-year-old start-up. We start with the facts on what Vidyard does, how they do it and how their clients are benefiting. Michael and Alan discuss the challenges that present themselves as the Vidyard team grows. Michael notes that the employee head count isn’t their measure of success, but how happy and focused the employees are within Vidyard’s culture. Vidyard recently moved their headquarters into the downtown Kitchener, Ontario core. Michael thinks it’s important to create a positive impact in the community so Vidyard is donating time and resources through their “Plugin” initiative. When Vidyard began their journey, video was not high on the marketer’s checklist. Video has since boomed, resulting in new competitors, so Michael explains how Vidyard stays innovative in the bigger, busier market. He discusses the integration of his new chief operating officer, describing why they chose to hire a COO and how the company culture is affected. Michael also shares his predictions for the future of marketing with video, including the rise of virtual reality. We close by having Michael share his advice for entrepreneurs entering the start-up world. About Our Guest Michael Litt is the co-founder and chief executive officer at Vidyard, an intelligence platform helping marketers make the most out of video.
