County Cork, on Ireland's southern shore, is its biggest county, bigger than all the rest, all thirty one of them.   Corkonians, as the people of Cork are known, are intensely proud of their heritage.  They often claim, in all sincerity, that Cork City, not Dublin, is the true capital of Ireland.   And they might be right.  One need only ask the British about their experiences dealing with 'the rebel county'.By the time the centerpiece of this episode, musician and singer Donie Carroll, left his native Cork for New York, he'd already experienced many twists and turns on the botharín* of life,  including a plunge with alcoholism to the depths of despair, before rising again on the crest of the freedom that sobriety has given him. But sobriety is no guarantee of a 'happy ever after', and even this year alone Donie has faced down further challenges, including the loss of his good friends John Browne, and music man Mick Moloney.  But through all the ups and downs of his life, music has been his sweetest friend. This episode will also school you in the Cork accent, which, if you're not familiar with it, is as unique in the basket of Irish accents as Corkonians are among the Irish people. *boreen in English.====================More info:Donie CarrollMick MoloneyThe DublinersMercy CentreDe Valera stands up to ChurchillIrish RepSober St Patricks' Day====================Many thanks to our centerpiece, Donie Carroll himself, for his music heard in this episode.  Here are those tracks in order, and the albums they appear on:The Cottage By The Lee ( from Down The Slippery Gap)The Night the Goat Broke Loose on Grand Parade (Down The Slippery Gap)The Army of Today's All Right (Divil of a Noise–contains De Valera speech excerpt)Beautiful Dreamer (Down The Slippery Gap)Up The Coal Quay (Down The Slippery Gap)Are Ya Right There, Michael? Most Irish traditional tunes have names. Some go by many different names. So what's in a name? Do names help us associate tunes with people, or remember vast numbers of melodies… or is there another agenda afoot? In this episode, Colm Gannon, Nic Gareiss, Mick Moloney—and renowned 20th century literary figures Dick and Jane—explore the meaning behind the names. __________________ For playlists, transcripts, links to videos, companion essays, and to contribute to this project, please head to IrishMusicStories.org. ___________________ Thank you to everybody for listening. Seán Cleland is an Irish fiddle player, Irish music teacher, adjudicator, collaborator, producer and executive director of the Irish Music School of Chicago, a non-profit traditional Irish music, language, song and dance school, which he founded in 2003.Seán grew up on the North side of Chicago in an Irish-American household.  He started classical violin lessons at age 7, and at age 9 his parents took him to one of the first North American concert tours of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Ireland's national music organization. The performers that fall night in 1972 were the absolute best traditional musicians, singers and dancers from Ireland including Paddy Glackin, Paddy Ryan and Antoin MacGabhann. That night was so impactful that he decided right then and there that he would play the fiddle. His musical education through the 1970s was energized by such local legends as Liz Carroll, Michael Flatley and Jimmy Keane who were bursting out of Chicago onto the world stage.  Additionally, there were quite a few older Irish musicians who had emigrated to the United States in the 1950s and Sean was incredibly privileged to get to know them and to spend so much time listening to their music and stories.Niall O'Leary TCRG, ADCRG is from Dublin Ireland. A former All-Ireland and World Champion, he founded the Niall O'Leary School of Irish Dance in Dublin in 1995, in the New York metropoilitan area in 1996 and in Florida in 2007. The School is currently the largest in New York City.  Niall O'Leary performs regularly as a solo artist, in duet with Darrah Carr, and with various acts such as Natalie MacMaster,Cherish The Ladies, The Prodigals, The Andy Cooney Band, Atlantic Wave, The McCabes and Mick Moloney's Green Fields of America. He is in constant demand as a choreographer and master instructor and conducts regular workshops around the US, Canada, Ireland, Japan and Mexico. He has made a CD and an instructional video in Irish step dancing entitled 'Cuts from the Kitchen'. He was the founding chairman of Ull Mor CCE, the Manhattan branch of Comhaltas.Marty joins Seán and Niall to talk about the Kilgubbin Project, which is an ongoing exploration of Irish music, pushing the boundaries of what Irish music means, and plumbing the depths of appreciation and love for it as well.

Kate Fitzgerald founded Whispering Smith in 2011 and describes it as a staunchly feminist architecture firm with a focus on new approaches to millennial housing, sustainability, local craft and friendly minimalist architecture. Kate is well known in the Australian small practice scene for the way she helps other small practices grow their business, become more profitable and equitable.  Whether it’s her role on the WA committee of the Association of Consulting Architects, her contributions to State Government planning policy, or co-founding the Business of Small Practice forum in WA - Kate is a vital resource for other small practices. Over the last year Kate has started a new podcast called In Detail with Mick Moloney and Warwick Mihaly, where the three architects have frank discussions about the challenges of running small architecture practices. Kate has also recently launched a sister brand called New Resident, which is a delivery model for ‘ready-made architecture’, a range of affordable house designs on hand-picked urban infill sites. In this conversation, Kate and I talk about the value of the value of giving back to the profession, knowing your why, being a team rather than the unique genius, establishing a healthy relationship with your clients, identifying the right clients and saying no to the bad ones. If you’d like to learn more about Kate, you can visit whisperingsmith.com.au or follow her on Instagram at whisperingsmitharchitecture. Along with being a singer and player of the 4-string banjo and mandolin, he holds a doctorate in folklore from the University of Pennsylvania and regularly takes groups to Ireland to experience first-hand the music and culture of his native land.  Born in New York City and then spending her childhood in San Francisco, Athena Tergis was classically trained on the violin but later fell in love with Irish and Scottish fiddle music. A former solo fiddler for the Broadway production of Riverdance, she tours with Mick Moloney and other musicians when not tending to her winery with her husband in the hills of Tuscany, Italy.

Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the Virtual Public House for Celtic culture through music. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic Geek musician and your guide to honoring our past and adapting for our future. Today’s show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. "Buy the Digital Albums". Name your price to ZERO. Then download and enjoy your free albums. Then Subscribe to the Pub Songs Podcast at PubSong.net to enjoy this podcast. This offer is good until March 18, 2019. The Pub Songs Podcast celebrates our shared love of Celtic culture. But it also recognizes that our world is changing. So you will mostly hear fun Celtic music on the show. But it'll be mixed in with songs inspired by Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and Firefly. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY? 0:18 "The Hunter Set" by Runa from Current Affairs Everyone is Irish on St Patrick's Day. But I prefer to see this as a holiday for everyone of Celtic ancestry. I don’t know how many kilts I’ve seen worn on the holiday, but it’s a lot. 8:25 FACT #1 Ireland is one of seven Celtic nations. These are the places that the Celts settled after invading their way from central Europe before finally being conquered by the Romans and driven to the fringes of continent. The nations include: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, Cornwall in Southwest England, Brittany in France, and Galicia in Northwest Spain. While the Celts settled in those locations, they were eventually pushed out of those homelands to places around the world. 9:32 “Almost Irish” by Ceann from from Almost Irish and Best of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast 14:45 FACT #2 Boston, New York, New Orleans was one of the top 3 immigration points for the Irish during the potato blight of the 1800s. “Men of New Basin Canal” that honors the 30K Irishmen who died digging that canal. 15:22 “Men of New Basin Canal” by Marc Gunn & Jamie Haeuser from How America Saved Irish Music 18:29 FACT #3 March 17th is the holy day of St. Patrick in the Catholic church. Because of this, it was not celebrated like you find it today. In fact, March 17 was a dry holiday in Ireland until the 70s. All the pubs were closed. In 1995 they began celebrating it like in America. It's quite a ironic that as a sainted holiday, St Patrick's Day is celebrated with drinking. 19:00 "St Patrick Never Drank" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure 21:27 FACT #4 St Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Scotland or Wales in the 4th century. Originally, he was enslaved and taken to Ireland. He escaped, became a Christian and went back to convert the Celts. He died in Ireland on March 17, 461. I was born on St Patrick's Day. I have a song for all those born on March 17th or of Irish heritage. 21:55 "Happy Birthday from Ireland” by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper 25:08 PUB CHAT I want your feedback. What are you doing today while listening to the Pub Songs Podcast? How has this show inspired you? Send a written comment along with any pictures to marc@marcgunn.com. Use the hashtag #pubsongs in the subject of your email. River Godbee replied to my Marc's Musing email: "Typically I am cleaning up around the house, which never ends when you have a 5 year old! But I also listen while driving to work/school or going on walks. I used to use a variety of podcast apps, but now I stick to Spotify so that I can have my music and shows in one place. (It also makes it easier to find the albums you mention in the show.) And for St Patrick's Day? Since I live in Savannah, I will be avoiding downtown and spending the day with my wife and daughter." Carol Baril replied to Marc's Musings: "Hey Marc! Love the last Coffee with the Celtfather!  I was sick last week with a stomach bug and bad head cold so I listened on my phone while sitting at home with my kitties!  Usually I'm working at my desk and your Podcasts are a great way to relax thru the stress of computer work! I loved that Beer, Beer, Beer song with the Harry Potter twist!  Keep working on that one and you can put it on a new Sci-fi drinking song CD!!! Take care and give your girls hugs from me and my kitties!" 27:06 FACT #5 Green is most-often associated with St Patrick’s Day. But St Patrick’s color was actually blue. And as a wild twist, I was told that the Scots wore orange. It wasn’t until much later I realized that green was the color of Catholics and orange was the color of Protestants. And of course the Republic of Ireland is largely Catholic. 27:35 “The Orange and the Green” by Brobdingnagian Bards from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 29:56 FACT #6 St Paddy’s Day is the shortened version of St Patrick’s Day. However, that shortened name is often misspelled. It should be spelled Paddy. Not Patty. Patty is a girls name. Paddy is short for the Irish name Padraig. 30:52 “P Stands for Paddy” by Emish from Sinners Make the Best Saints 36:30 FACT #7 The most famous Irish song is Danny Boy. But it’s not actually Irish. Okay the melody is an Irish tune called “Derry Aire”. But the lyrics were written by an English lawyer and songwriter named Frederic Weatherly. I get the song requested so much that I play two versions of “Danny Boy”, the original and a parody about cats. 36:57 "Danny Boy for Cat Lovers" by Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats from Whiskers in the Jar 40:00 FACT #8 The first St Patrick’s day parade was celebrated in New York in 1762. The Irish were trying to hold on to their heritage. Parades sprang up around the world since then, most notably in Chicago where the river is dyed green. Dublin too now has a big St. Patrick’s Day parade. 40:37 "Patrick's Day Parade" by Mick Moloney from McNally's Row of Flats (Irish American Songs of Old New York) 44:05 FACT #9 The leprechaun is a fascinating and mischievous creature from Irish lore. The modern representation was actually a racist link between the Irish and monkeys. It was meant to belittle the Irish immigrants in the early 1900s. It seems Irish Americans embraced and rebirthed the myth. Oh and apparently, there are no female leprechauns in the lore. I wrote a song that celebrates America’s contribution to the leprechaun myth and to Irish music. 44:36 "The Leprechaun" by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper 48:35 FACT #10 Slainte Mhaith is an Irish toast. It means “here’s to your good health”. In lovely Gaelic fashion, it’s spelled nothing like it sounds in English. So if you’re out drinking, be it Guinness or tea, raise a glass and repeat the Phrase. 48:53 "Slainte Mhaith" by Kilted Kings from Name On My Soul 50:53 FACT #11 More than 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed on St Patrick’s Day. I hope you will raise a glass also to Charlie Mopps, the fictitious inventor of beer. 51:11 "Beer, Beer, Beer" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure The Pub Songs Podcast is listener-supported. Why do old ballads endure? Does it make sense to sing about Willie and Mary, when our playgrounds are filled with Ozzies and Loxleys? Do we really need to say “my love is like a red, red rose,” or can’t we use a modern metaphor and call her really hot? Laura Cortese, Cathy Jordan, Sam Amidon, Robbie O’Connell, and Karan Casey help host Shannon Heaton explore old ballads in a dating app era. There’s plenty of music here, too. Ozark Highlands Radio is a weekly radio program that features live music and interviews recorded at Ozark Folk Center State Park’s beautiful 1,000-seat auditorium in Mountain View, Arkansas. In addition to the music, our “Feature Host” segments take listeners through the Ozark hills with historians, authors, and personalities who explore the people, stories, and history of the Ozark region. This week, prodigious purveyors of the past, multi-instrumentalists, singers and story tellers, Anna & Elizabeth perform live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with these unique performers. Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark originals The Hall Family, performing the traditional song “Cowboy’s Dream.” Author, folklorist, and songwriter Charley Sandage presents a portrait of world famous cowboy poet & singer Glenn Orhlin. The collaboration between Anna & Elizabeth spans worlds — between their homes in Brooklyn and rural Virginia -- between deep study of mountain ballads with old masters and explorations into the avant garde — between music, performance, and visual art. Anna & Elizabeth have performed across the country and in Europe. Highlights include: The Newport Folk Festival; NPR's Tiny Desk Concert; The Chicago Folk Festival; The High Museum of Modern Art (Atlanta); and the Cambridge Folk Festival (UK.)  Their work has been featured on BBC Radio 2 and BBC3's Late Junction, Vice’s Noisey, the Huffington Post, and No Depression. They have shared the stage with Alice Gerrard, Mick Moloney, Sam Lee and Riley Baugus, Bruce Greene, Abigail Washburn, Wayne Henderson, and also National Heritage Award winners Sheila Kay Adams and Billy McComiskey. Elizabeth Laprelle lives on a farm in Rural Retreat, Virginia, where she grew up, and  has pursued her interest in mountain ballads for over a decade. Since the release of her debut album at age 16, she’s been hailed as one of the most dedicated students of the traditional unaccompanied style of her generation. The student of master singer Ginny Hawker and National Heritage Fellow Sheila Kay Adams, Elizabeth was the first recipient of the Henry Reed Award from the Library of Congress at age 16, and won the 2012 Mike Seeger Award at Folk Alliance International. She has released three solo ballad albums, and was called “the best young Appalachian ballad singer to emerge in recent memory” by UK’s fRoots Magazine.  Anna Roberts-Gevalt is a voracious and curious multi-instrumentalist originally from Vermont, described by Meredith Monk as a "radiant being." She fell in love with the sound of banjo in college, moved to the mountains, and learned with master musicians in Kentucky, Virginia, and North Carolina, becoming a blue-ribbon fiddler and banjo player (WV State Folk Fest, Kentucky Fiddle Contest.) She was a fellow at the Berea College Archive, a 2014 OneBeat fellow (Bang on a Can's Found Sound Nation,) artistic director of Kentucky’s traditional music institute, the Cowan Creek Mountain Music School, and curator of Baltimore's Crankie Festival.  She has recently delved into new musical worlds, including recent work with composers Brian Harnetty, Nate May and Cleek Schrey, Matmos, David Rothenberg, Susan Alcorn, and saxophonist Jarrett Gilgore. She has contributed writing to No Depression and The Old Time Herald. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark originals The Hall Family, performing the traditional song “Cowboy’s Dream,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist, and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events, and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. This episode focuses on world renowned cowboy poet, balladeer, and story teller Glenn Orhlin.

The first is entitled "A Semi-Celtic Christmas". The second is just traditional fun Christmas songs. I also released an EP entitled Celtic Christmas Songs which features three original Christmas songs inspired by Celtic culture and lifestyle. It's now on sale on all the major digital retailers. Don't miss my pick of the Best Celtic Christmas Albums on Amazon. Finally, I want to thank everyone who helped spread the word about A Celtic Christmas, my newest Celtic Christmas compilation CD. The album continues to sell well online and garner reviews from fans and the press. One blogger called it the "Best Celtic Christmas Album of the Year". This album would not be nearly as successful without all your kind and generous support. If you enjoy this show, please check out the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. It's an award-winning podcast featuring some of the best independent Celtic music online. And please remember to support the artists in this show by buying an album from your favorite artist.   This Week’s Celtic Christmas Music "Christmas Waltz" by The Brigands' Folie from Twain Brigands' Folie is an exciting acoustic duo playing traditional Irish, Scottish, English, and colonial American music together around the Midwest since 2005. The band's mission is to educate the public about the lives and stories of 18th & 19th Century settlers, soldiers, and sailors through music of the period. "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" by The Gothard Sisters from Christmas The Gothard Sisters are three young Celtic and classical musicians who write new arrangements of traditional celtic and christmas favorites. They are emerging young artists and dancers from the pacific northwest and play several instruments each, creating a warm sound of acoustic progressive celtic-classical folk. "Winter's Day" by Mithril from Winter's Day Mithril's unique progressive style has its roots in traditional Celtic music but moves far beyond that, weaving such diverse influences as American folk, classical, and Middle Eastern melodies in...to their full tapestry of sound. "On Christmas Night" by Cherish the Ladies from On Christmas Night Celebrating 28 Years of Music Making, Cherish the Ladies is an American all-female Irish-American super group. The band began as a concert series in New York in January 1985, the brainchild of Mick Moloney who wanted to showcase the brightest female musicians in America in what had been a male-dominated scene. The series opened to sold out concerts. Under the leadership of the dynamic and irrepressible Joanie Madden on flutes and whistles, they have grown from a one-time concert concept to an Irish traditional music sensation and are the most successful and sought after Irish-American group in Celtic music. "Christmas day in the morning/I saw three ships/On Christmas night/New years day" by Bonnie Rideout from A Scottish Christmas, The Celebration Bonnie Rideout is an award winning Scottish fiddler. On stages from Scotland’s Edinburgh International Festival to America’s Kennedy Center, Bonnie Rideout’s unique style of Scottish fiddling has charmed audiences across the globe. Bonnie has been featured on the BBC, CBS, NPR’s Performance Today, and Morning Edition. Her A Scottish Christmas CD became a New York Times “Top Ten Holiday Best Seller”. Its success prompted a touring show that has sold out halls across North America for over a decade. In 2007, the Mel Bay Publishing Company credited Bonnie as one of America’s top ten most influential traditional fiddlers of the 20th century. "Have You Heard" by The Irish Rovers from Merry Merry Time Of Year The Irish Rovers is a Canadian Irish folk group created in 1963 and named after the traditional song "The Irish Rover." The group is best known for their international television series, contributing to the popularization of Irish Music in North America. All band members hail from Ireland, however the group was formed in Toronto, Canada. Since then there have been over 40 albums in North America with more internationally. “Have You Heard” is a beautiful Christmas tune with an old world sound, but like with all the Irish Rovers songs, you’ll want to sing along. It’s written by George Millar who has written most of the Rovers’ original music over the years. "Christmas Pipes" by Katie McMahon from Celtic Christmas Katie McMahon is an Irish singer from Dublin. She was a soloist with the original Riverdance troupe. Her recordings have largely featured traditional Irish songs, occasionally in the Irish language. She has released five critically acclaimed solo CDs: After the Morning, Shine, Celtic Christmas, St. Patrick's Day and Christmas Angels.
