Songs are sometimes much more than a mere confection of words and music. Take the enduringly popular Irish ballad “Raglan Road”, whose ingredients are a dark-haired beauty, a lovelorn poet, a sublime ancient melody and one of Ireland's finest folk singers. In 1944 Patrick Kavanagh, who was to become one of Ireland's most popular poets, fell hopelessly in love at the age of 40 with a beautiful medical student named Hilda Moriarty, then only 22. They both had lodgings on Raglan Road, Dublin, and a relatively short relationship ensued that ended because of the age difference and her parents' disapproval of a middle-aged man who was barely scraping a living from poetry and journalism. Moriarty later married an aspiring politician, Donogh O'Malley, a dashing figure who as education minister in 1966 introduced the crucial reform of free secondary education and rural school buses in the Irish Republic.Heartbroken at losing her, Kavanagh composed one of the great poems of unrequited love, “On Raglan Road”, which was first published in The Irish Press newspaper in 1946. The opening lines reveal his fear that the affair was doomed from day one: “On Raglan Road on an autumn day I met her first and knew/ That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue . . . ”Kavanagh always regarded his poem as a song lyric, however, and matched it to the traditional Irish air “Fáinne Geal an Lae”, which was first published in 1847 and translated into English as “The Dawning of the Day”, a phrase he uses in the poem.Another 20 years passed before his hope of it becoming a successful song was fulfilled. One night in 1966 Kavanagh buttonholed Luke Kelly, singer with The Dubliners folk group, in the city's The Bailey bar. Both men were renowned drinkers, and as Kelly supped on Guinness and a shot of whiskey in the smoky bar after a singing session, Kavanagh announced: “I've got a song for you! You should sing ‘Raglan Road'.”Unlike the match with Moriarty, this one was made in heaven. Kelly, a striking figure with a shock of curly red hair and a commanding tenor voice, loved the song and his compelling renditions of it are regarded by many as unsurpassed. Thanks to his and The Dubliners'performances “Raglan Road” became popular in Ireland, even though the group did not record it until their 1972 live album, Hometown!. Kavanagh, sadly, never saw his song become a hit — he died a year after presenting it to Kelly. The song gained a second surge of life in 1988, this time bringing international recognition, when Van Morrisonrecorded it with The Chieftains for the album Irish Heartbeat. While The Dubliners' delivery is stately, with Kelly's voice dominant over simple banjo, guitar, tin whistle and violin, Morrison's dramatic arrangement interprets the poem's emotions with another vocal tour de force. As The Chieftains' accompaniment grows to a swirling support with Paddy Moloney's uilleann pipes to the fore, Morrison's voice soars, repeats words and even reduces to a whisper for the lines: “On a quiet street where old ghosts meet,/ I see her walking now, Away from me,/ So hurriedly. My reason must allow . . . ”Since then many folk artists have recorded it, as well as rock stars Sinéad O'Connor, Roger Daltreyand Mark Knopfler, but none quite matches the passionate pomp that Kelly and Morrison bring and which the song demands. The likes of Ed Sheeran, Billy Braggand Billy Joel have also sung it in concert. And in 2008 Kelly's rendition was heard again in the film &

In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal. I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. They say the strongest form of advertisement is word of mouth, so I provide a video to a platform of readers to help get people talking. Help them spread the word. Growing up in a Dublin home with no TV, Aedín turned to books, reading them aloud, drawing out the characters, and letting the words wash over her, which is how at age ten she managed to read James Joyce's intimidating novel Ulysses. She was drawn to the rhythms and music in the words of the great writers, no surprise coming from a home with her avid reader mother and her father, Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains. But she'd feel the lure of the stage and after early acting experiences in Dublin she ventured to London and found success, ironically, considering her upbringing, on television. But New York beckoned, where Aedín has acted in a string of Off Broadway plays often at the famed Irish Repertory Theatre. She has also worked to amplify the voices of women on the stage through the Fallen Angel Theatre Company she founded, focused on Irish and British plays by and about women, which she often performed, directed, or produced. We talked to Aedín as she was concluding her successful Irish Rep run of Yes! Reflections of Molly Bloom, which she and Colum McCann adapted from the closing section of Ulysses, directed by John Keating, with music by Paddy Moloney. It's a one-woman show where Aiden never leaves the stage for 90 minutes, electrifying for the audience, exhausting for Aedín.But not so exhausting that she doesn't want to stop channeling the spirit of Molly Bloom as she and Colum are working to take the show on tour to Ireland and the UK.And for the second time, Aedín gifts Irish Stew with a passage from Yes!, so be sure to stay to the end when she brings Molly to vibrant life performing the “Mulvey's Letter” section of Molly Bloom's Soliloquy.Links:Website: http://www.aedinmoloney.com/Fallen Angel website: https://www.fallenangeltheatre.org/homeofficialsiteTwitter: https://twitter.com/AedinMoloneyFallen Angel Twitter: https://twitter.com/FallenAngelNYYes! In this episode, we reach for the stars with Irish American astronaut Dr. Cady Coleman, a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions and 159 days in orbit on the International Space Station (ISS).Cady says she's one-quarter Irish on both sides, but that it adds up to much more than half. When not exploring outer space, she's exploring Irish music on the flute and tin whistle, even playing with the Chieftains. On St. Patrick's Day, she live-streamed her playing a tin whistle from Paddy Moloney and an old wooden flute from Matt Molloy while floating in space aboard the ISS as a way of sharing her cosmic experience with them and the entire Global Irish Nation. We discuss her journey into the exclusive ranks of space travelers, the drama of the mission aborted six seconds before liftoff, the sights and sounds of the International Space Station, and “the grief in leaving” space and adjusting to life back on earth. As this episode airs, Russia has invaded Ukraine with Putin, even threatening the safety of the ISS, but Cady talks of the cooperation among all nations involved with the space station and the international structures in place to ensure this orbiting outpost remains neutral territory.Oh, she also was a consultant for Sandra Bullock on “Gravity,” dueted with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull from the ISS, has done several TED Talks, is a successful keynote speaker, hosts the outstanding podcast Mission Interplanetary, and plays with fellow astronauts Stephen Robinson and Chris Hadfield in the musical group Bandella, and is featured on an Irish postage stamp! In this episode, the legendary Paul Morley joins us to talk about his native Manchester, Joy Division and his epic new biography of Factory Records boss Tony Wilson. Paul recounts his early pop epiphanies and discovery of the UK's music press, culminating in the one & only issue of his 1976 fanzine Out There — not to mention his first reviews for the NME in 1976. The conversation then turns to "Anthony H." Wilson and the formation of Factory, taking in Paul's championing of Joy Division before leading into a discussion of Martin Aston's 1986 audio interview with New Order's Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris. From there we consider the week's featured act Faust, spinning off from pieces about the German enigmas by Ian MacDonald, Andy Gill and David Stubbs, and prompting general thoughts on "Krautrock" from both guest and hosts. After saying goodbye to chief Chieftain Paddy Moloney, and to three veteran RBP writers on soul and R&B (Pete Grendysa, Bob Fisher and Roger St. Pierre), Mark leads us through his personal favourites among the 100+ articles added to the RBP library over the past fortnight, incuding pieces about the Stones' pad in Edith Grove, Lorraine Ellison's volcanic single 'Stay With Me' and Charlie Watts on drummers & drumming. Finally, Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on pieces about Primal Scream's 2000 XTRMNTR and John Sinclair taking The Wire's "Invisible Jukebox" text in 2003. Many thanks to special guest Paul Morley; his book From Manchester with Love: The Life and Opinions of Tony Wilson is published by Faber and available now. Pieces discussed: Paul Morley on Manchester, Joy Division, New Order, Tony Wilson, New Order audio, Faust, Faust IV, Jean-Hervé Peron, David Stubbs' Faustian Pact, Rhythm & Blues, Soul (Style), The Chieftains, Paddy Moloney, The Stones, Pink Floyd, Lorraine Ellison, Iron Butterfly, Patti Smith, 808 State, Dusty Springfield, Charlie Watts, The Sex Pistols, Was (Not Was), Primal Scream and John Sinclair.

Saturday 16 October: Paddy Moloney on taking traditional Irish music to all sorts of new places, and Gil Scott-Heron's collaborator on jazz, politics and his Fender Rhodes piano.
A heap of new releases from around the globe, a big preview of next week's celebration of Canadian country blues, some stirring music from England, and a Celtic flourish culminating with a tribute to The Chieftains' pioneering piper and raconteur, Paddy Moloney, who passed away last week at the age of 83
We recap on our short story, written in English by American author Joe Giordano and translated into Manx for Claare ny Gael, and then follow it to its sad conclusion. Meanwhile, we trace the circumstances that led to 800 armed Manx militia men assembling at the house of Illiam Dhone, William Christian, to take an oath of allegiance to him to make a stand against Charlotte, the Countess of Derby, and negotiate directly with the Parliamentarians to protect the rights and privileges - and the lives - of the Manx people. That took place on 18th October 1651.

Gunfire erupted on the streets of Beirut on Thursday, killing six people. The violence erupted when armed supporters of Shiite militant and political groups, Hezbollah and Amal, marched through a Christian neighborhood in protests against the judge presiding over the August blast investigation. And police say a bow-and-arrow attack in Norway Wednesday night in which a man is suspected of killing five people appears to be an "act of terror.” It's the worst attack in Norway since Anders Breivik, the far-right extremist who killed 77 people in 2011. Plus, The World remembers Irish musician Paddy Moloney, master of the uilleann pipes, slide whistle and penny whistle, and co-founder of the Chieftains.

This podcast made quickly while I was still telling from there news of Paddy Moloney's death, today October 12th 2021, is a reminder to people of how highly even music greats, such as Frank Zappa, rated Paddy Moloney and the Chieftains. He laughed at the idea that U2 were more highly rated in Ireland in 2000. I laugh at that idea, today, but I laugh ironically. Paddy Moloney R.I.P. He was a friend. I will miss him.

I have been a champion of the music of the Chieftains since 1990 when I did my first interview with Paddy Moloney. I explain why, at the start of this podcast. It has something to do with U2. Championing the Chieftains led to my sitting in on a recording session they did in Frank Zappa's home - check my Zappa podcast - with Tom Jones singing the vocal on Tennessee Waltz. Later again I write the sleeve notes fro their album The Chieftains: The Wide World over: A 40 Year Celebration. We did a radio show around the same time and here you have the group playing live for me a track from that album. I include the three takes we did - two have never been heard- to highlight the perfectionism of the Chieftains.

In The Name of God”. "Which would you rather have? Mediocre innovation or a direct descent from Celtic culture?" Frank Zappa, commenting on what he saw as the difference between U2 and The Chieftains in 1992. This is less of an interview than a world exclusive chat I had with Zappa in his home in the Hollywood Hills in 1992. I was attending the Chieftains recording session with Tom Jones, in Zappa's studio, and covering the Chieftains' time in LA, which included a visit, the night before, to the Grammy Awards show, at which they won a Grammy for the album, Another Country. During the session someone mentioned that U2 were more highly rated in Ireland than the Chieftains and this chat - recorded on a cheap cassette because I wasn't meant to be working as a journalist at the session - arose when Paddy Moloney, of the Chieftains, asked Frank to give me a quote elaborating on Zappa's claim that "there is no comparison" between U2 and the Chieftains. We also discussed Zappa's music, and in the end, his health. He died a year or so later.

Down By The Salley Gardens,出自Joanie Madden的专辑Song Of The Irish Whistle。
