In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Jenny Maxwell was one of Hollywood's "it girls", appearing in countless television shows and films. Arguably her most memorable role was that of Ellie Corbett in Elvis Presley's 1961 movie "Blue Hawaii", where she stole every scene she was in. But despite her professional success, her personal life was a mess, much of it due to alcohol, drugs and wild Hollywood parties. By 1981 she was seeking a divorce from her second husband (mob lawyer Tip Roeder) when they were both gunned down outside her condo in Beverly Hills. My guest Buddy Moorehouse, author of "Murder of an Elvis Girl: Solving the Jenny Maxwell Case", has a family connection to this case. His mother was first cousins with Jenny, and solving the mystery of her death was of personal importance to him. He joins me to talk about Jenny and his investigation into her murder almost 40 years after that fateful day. God provides for the blind vulture. The tarantula doesn't toil. White roosters. The Golden Rule. The reap what you sow. Some of these sound familiar. Some probably do not. However, all are aspects of African proverbs. Our guest this episode. Chris Moorehouse, wrote a landmark book entitled "Legacy: Wisdom of African Traditions and the Bible. Moorehouse investigated the proverbs over numerous peoples and languages throughout Africa and the results speak for themselves. We discuss those aspects and I successfully divert him into some tangents and meanderings of my own. Chris Morehouse holds a Master's of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh, where he focused on economic and social development in Africa. He has long admired the way that African proverbs encapsulate profound wisdom in vivid ways. A legacy for all, African proverbs often accord with Judeo-Christian teachings. He serves as a deacon at Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, where he lives with his family.Legacy: Wisdom of African Traditions and the Bible | Audiobook on Spotify

They've had contrasting journeys to get to this point. Walsh's story is the epitome of The Rocky Road. Said to be one punch from retirement at one point, she's been through four thumb operations and several other dunts to get to this stage where she's got to be a live contender for the podium in Paris. As for Moorehouse, hoping to become Wicklow's latest gold medallist, she's been chasing these Games down with a sense of destiny behind her. Hosted on Acast. Archie gave us his entire story from the impact of racial trauma as a child, battling alcoholism, and managing clinical depression & anxiety. From studying at Moorehouse to moving to New York to chase a music career dream where he'd seen early success, @the_cope_dealer quickly learned like many of us… God has his own plans. After catching a DUI @the_cope_dealer said he heard God speak to him directly and his life would forever be changed as he shortly after became intentional about his own healing & mental health, then forming his organization @peeldemlayersback I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation because it was a great example of when Black Men share our stories we find out we have much more in common then we realize!! As I prepared for this interviewed I sat with my guest MIles Moorehouse, the man behind the Fairline Brand, in a room watching a 58 foot yacht sail past the window.  The only thing was it wasn't sailing on a picturisque ocean of the English Coastline - in fact we were 200 miles inland at the Fairline Factory where the original owner,      set up shop. Miles shares the journey of the Fairline Brand that is steeped in history and classic English storylines.   As the original fibreglass boat builder, Jack Newing Newington acquired an assortment of disused gravel pits by the River Nene, and the land between the main lake and the road. By cutting a route through from the lake to the river, and erecting workshops, offices, a chandlery shop and slipway, he transformed the area into Oundle Marina. He spent his leisure days inadvertently showcasing the boat designs and launching the Fairline factory and more recently collaborating with the Italian yacht designer Alberto Mancini has resulted in a unique combination of contemporary style with a long-standing heritage. Listen as Miles and I share a laugh and the elements of great design. Light, detail, volume and finesse, paired with the security of outstanding seakeeping.  This is where understated elegance meets performance and adventure. www.fairline.com

Dodge City was founded on June 17, 1872 as makeshift bar setup five miles west of Fort Dodge. The Founding of Dodge City tells the story of when George Brown meets George Hoover who has set up a makeshift whiskey bar in the middle of the plains. Hoover explains to Brown how he had an obligation to feel the needs of railroad workers and buffalo hunters by opening up a bar. Opening a bar was a simple process, he only needed two things: a place to sell it and the barrels to supply it. The story narrated by Brad Smalley and written/produced by Mike King is a part of a historical series describes how Hoover settled on the location of his makeshift bar, "The western border of the reservation was five miles from the Fort itself. So I decided to mark off five miles from the Fort. To take a true measurement of the distance traveled, I tied a rag to a wheel on my wagon.” At the end of the conversation Hoover convinces Brown to go into the whiskey business by opening a bar next to his tent. Soon after Brown sets up the second saloon in Dodge City a make shift town is created of crude framed buildings, half wood, and half dugout. Brown provides a first hand look at then Buffalo City soon to become Dodge City during the months of July and August of 1872. One week after Brown sets up his saloon gamblers and women start to arrive in big bowed, mule-driven wagons. What comes next from those wagons begins to play out as bad whiskey business - as one of the first gunfights erupts in the street between gambler Moorehouse and ruffian by the name of Langford. Within the belly of the beast in this country lies the soul turnaround of African Preachers from the South. They need to be black because certain portions of blacks were enslaved and some say they still are. They have to be black because they need to have good rhythm. They need to be from the south where Montgomery and Birmingham are seared into the minds of every kid who watched the black and white videos of (Police Cheif) hosing down innocent people. The south had the most overt Rascism and impoverishment so to come of age as a minister with the underclass you were them once and you know what it's like to walk in their shoes. Even when your flying high in the city of Angeles you still know what it's like to be in the poor mans shoes. You know how to talk to the bumpkin or the metal worker or the illiterate boy who impregnated your daughter because you know you can't be saved by two different saviors. You have to be a preacher because you bleed charisma. You spend a full night partying on Saturday night, meeting with varied interest groups on Sunday morning and afternoon and then give a thunderous speech from the pulpit calling for each human being to find themselves, do it through relentless passion, fire and brimstone but also the cagey insights that keep a Rev. Cleage on your side or the adoring loyalty of Corretta Scott King. My guest today wrote about this African American Preacher from the South. CL Franklin. Who Sang in Strange Lands like Memphis and Buffalo and Detroit. Franklin was part of the confluence of entertainment, politics religion and burgeoning soul music that led to a genuine cultural uprising. Franklin didn't have the IQ of Dr. king but he was a street scholar who didn't spend a lot of time not dealing in black and white. Ask his son who was not excited to go to Moorehouse but then received a stern choice from his dad who was a single parent who raised nearly all of his children. His first wife Barbara bailed back to Buffalo but CL stuck with it with the helps of maids, mistresses and the gumption to bring coalitions together. When tensions were at their highest CL was at his coolest. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

In episode 33 about Rusty Cundieff’s film, Tales from the Hood, your hosts (Mary Kay, Mary, and Maegan) answer important questions like these:What doll would you inhabit if you had to haunt someone as a doll? What level of poltergeist have your sins earned you? What is it about Billie Holiday’s song, “Strange Fruit” that makes it the scariest song in existence? What is the deal with the paradox of superstition, occult, or the supernatural and their presence in Black Christianity? What defines superstition, occult, and the supernatural? How does this movie deal with the trope of the “spook” in horror films? Why do so many horror movies featuring Black protagonists have so much vigilante violence? How does this movie use the anti-snitch policy? How does the first episode reconceptualize the zombie or reanimated corpse mythology? What causes Moorehouse to resurrect himself? What should we take away from the campaign manager’s role in the dolls’ episode? How is the Black experience different from the experience of other people of color? Is the campaign manager an Uncle Tom trope? Is that a thing for a non-Black person to notice? Can we get these fight scenes right? How does this movie tap into Survivor’s Guilt? The concept of passing? What about other cascading trauma? How does the horror-montage tap into a similar but worse emotion than A Clockwork Orange? What does it mean that Hell is just watching the experiences of Black people? What makes hell hell? Did the frame story narrative work? Why set the frame in a funeral home? What’s the deal with the grandfather clocks in every scene? Tales from the Hood (2005)– Directed and written by Rusty Cundieff.
