Send us a textBorn in the 1960's with ‘Birmingham Central Fire Station' on his birth certificate, Dave Walton has had a remarkable journey from growing up around the fire service to now becoming a key leader in shaping its future. He's a strategic thinker, an advocate for change, and a driving force behind improvements in leadership, diversity, and operational effectiveness in the UK Fire and Rescue Service. Today, we're going to talk about some of the most pressing topics facing the fire and rescue sector as Dave shares his insights from a young recruit in 1985 to his roles now including as the NFCC lead for Hazmat. We discuss how fire services must adapt to changing societal expectations, emerging risks, and new technology and we make the argument for why emotional intelligence, professional curiosity, and a commitment to continuous improvement are crucial for future leaders. Dave also takes us on a behind-the-scenes look at the Drummond Mill Fire, one of the largest incidents in his career, and what it taught him about decision-making under pressure.Throughout this conversation, you'll get a candid, no-holds-barred look at the fire service from someone who has lived and breathed it for decades. Dave doesn't shy away from the hard truths, and his perspective on leadership, innovation, and the importance of getting the right people in the right roles is invaluable for anyone looking to understand or improve the sector. So grab a coffee, sit back, and get ready for an insightful and thought-provoking discussion with one of the most self-aware & experienced leaders in the UK fire service today.(for context this was recorded in early 2024)We only feature the latest 200 episodes of the podcast on public platforms so to access our podcast LIBRARY, every Debrief & document CLICK HEREPODCAST GIFT - Get your FREE subscription to essential Firefighting publications HERE A big thanks to our partners for supporting this episode.GORE-TEX Professional ClothingMSA The Safety CompanyIDEXHAIX Footwear - Get offical podcast discount on HAIX HEREXendurance - to hunt performance & endurance 20% off HERE with code ffp20Lyfe Linez -  Get Functional Hydration FUEL for FIREFIGHTERS, Clean no sugar  for daily hydration. 80% of people live dehydrated and  for firefighters this costHibern8 - a plant based sleep aid specially designed to promote a restful night's sleep and awaken you feeling Support the show***The views expressed in this episode are those of the individual speakers. According to Gallup, the workforce has lost 2 million female employees over the course of the pandemic. While all people who work and take care of dependent family members at home, could use added support in the workplace, based on recent polls, working moms seem to be taking the brunt of the load during this shift.  This has caused many women to leave their jobs to devote more time to their roles as caretakers. Research also shows that mother's in are valuable because they bring skills in leadership and office dynamics that better the work environment. As the trend of caretakers, most notably, mothers, leaving the workforce has been noticed, many are stepping up to help employers develop skills to improve working conditions to keep these valuable employees.  In our last episode, we explored employer and employee relationships and realized that this topic is so big it needed two parts! If you haven't listened to episode 8 with NFCC's Executive Director, Mary Elizabeth Hand, be sure to listen to that one too, as we'll build upon that conversation and discuss more ways to improve interoffice dynamics and better support our most stretched employees with today's guest, Claire Holmes.  About our guest https://www.mamacollaborative.com/about (Claire Holmes) is the founder of https://www.mamacollaborative.com/ (Mama Collaborative), which helps working moms learn how to set themselves up for success through digital courses, resources, tools and an encouraging online community. Research has shown inter-office relationships with managers impacts self-confidence, self efficacy, and overall mental and physical health. Yet, many in management positions have little to no focused skills or incentive to practice building positive work dynamics. So, how do we help teams, no matter the size, move forward towards collaboration? We'll talk about how to develop the necessary skills needed to create an environment that supports everyone's needs and strengths to create a stronger, more successful work environment in today's episode with Nick Finnegan Counseling Center's Executive Director, Mary Elizabeth Hand. About our Guest Mary Elizabeth Hand has served as NFCC's Executive Director since 2015. Relationships are the cornerstone of human health. Research shows that when we experience consistent - quality relationships with others, we live longer, feel better and become more resilient to stress. However, when we don't have access to these types of relationships and are unable to create new ones, the risks to our mental and physical health change astronomically. In fact, many studies have now confirmed that loss of social support and chronic loneliness are more disastrous to our health than smoking, obesity, or other measures of health risk. Putting these facts in the modern context of a global pandemic can be quite alarming. Never before have people experienced this level of isolation. Even as we come back together, many struggle to create new social connections due to the increased anxiety and decreased social skills created by this period of separation. So, what do we do? How do we help ourselves, our children, and our parents navigate social situations during periods of separation? Here to help us explore this timely conversation is NFCC's Clinical Director, Heather Timmis. About our Guest https://finnegancounseling.org/counselors/heather-timmis/ (Heather Timmis) is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor who works with families, couples and individuals ages 3 years and up. Heather holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin as well as a master's degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. In addition to overseeing the clinical team at NFCC, she also supervises associate level counselors who are pursuing their license. Heather has many years of experience helping clients work through challenges such as trauma and anxiety with traditional talk therapy, play therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, also known as EMDR. She served as NFCC's Lead Clinician before stepping into the role of Clinical Director in October of 2021. Choosing to divulge your most vulnerable parts to a complete stranger takes a lot of courage. It also takes a lot of willingness to be vulnerable with ourselves and be willing to hear and do hard things. It makes sense that in situation such as this, forming a trusting, safe connection with a therapist is paramount. In fact, research has proven time and time again that it is the MOST important factor in therapeutic success. While this season we focus on relationship dynamics in all forms, we'll start with a truly unique relationship - the therapeutic relationship, or the therapeutic alliance as it is more professionally known. So, how do we find the right therapist? And, how do we make sure we feel safe and respected in this sensitive dynamic? Here to discuss this and more is Audrey Omenson, MA, LPC-S. About our guest: Audrey Omenson has worked as a licensed professional counselor in the Houston area since 2009. Currently she see clients in her private practice where her work is focused on supporting adults and teens ages 16 and up, who are looking to process major life transitions, address trauma, deal with burnout and boundary setting, increase self-awareness, and improve self-care practices. Audrey was also part of the NFCC team for 7 years, serving as a counselor and clinical director before stepping down to serve as a consultant in October of 2021. In addition to her several years of experience as a counselor, Audrey has also been on the client side of things and participated in therapy for herself at various points in her life. https://www.audreyomenson.com/about (Learn more about Audrey by visiting her website): https://www.audreyomenson.com/ A special thanks to our team: Tracy Lehman, Host & Executive Producer Jacel Dickson, Producer and Editor Theme music written and performed by Jim Roman Audio engineering courtesy of our podmasters at https://3wirecreative.com/ (3 Wire Creative) Administrators: Mary Elizabeth Hand and Heather Timmis Thanks for listening!

In this episode Anni talks to Dawn Whittaker, Chief Fire Officer and CEO of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, as well as NFCC lead for Drowning Prevention and Water Safety.Anni and Dawn talk about how early experiences ignited Dawn's passion for safety and why as a leader she is committed to nurturing both physical and psychological safety. Background and career influencesGrowing up on a farm in Wales, Dawn learned to be pragmatic and safety-conscious at an early age. Along with her sister, she was a keen member of the Brownies, Guides and Rangers - always actively involved in team and community projects. She believes this to be a trait inherited from parents and grandparents. However, her real interest in fire safety was sparked on an Outward Bound course, whilst working for a company. Dawn was frustrated at the organiser's failure to conduct any health safety briefings about fire exits and so after checking local procedures, she undertook a fire safety drill. “I think they all thought I'd lost the plot,” she reflects. In terms of her interest in water safety, it was a near drowning experience aged just 16 that had a lasting impact. Dawn is now the national lead for water safety and drowning prevention for the National Fire Chiefs Council in the UK, heading up the Be Water Aware campaign. The aim is to promote safe use of recreational water spaces.Dawn wasn't always within the Fire Service however. In her early career she worked in the retail sector with The John Lewis Partnership,  before moving into a managerial performance role at a County Council. Both roles led her to develop a passion for quality customer service and communication - something she has carried into her role at the Fire Service for over 17 years. Fighting fires during a pandemicDawn discusses the impact of the pandemic and praises her team who have worked tirelessly.  In addition to provision of standard services, the Fire Service has been collaborating with partners like the Coastguard and supporting the local Ambulance Service with much-needed drivers through the pandemicHowever, she admits the pandemic has been tough on the service. Not least because it meant finding new ways to engage with the public. But also because many of her staff members have had to manage their duties alongside the emotional, financial and physical burden of Covid-19.“People might think firefighters, and our staff are all heroes and superheroes, and superhuman, but, do you know what, we're just people,” says Dawn.Inspirational leaders and inclusivityDawn reveals the many leaders who have inspired her journey, including colleagues from John Lewis and existing and retired Fire Service leaders like David Archer and Bruce Hoad, both of whom she praises for their commitment to driving inclusivity and equality in the service.Driving diversity is something close to Dawn's heart. She talks about being a role model and "holding a mirror up".Listen to the episode to discover:How childhood role models can shape actions in adult lifeCommunity values and teamworkSupporting employee wellbeing during the pandemic and beyondThe importance of collaboration in the communityWhy inclusivity and diversity is essential to the future workforce Celebrating human differences and the value these can bringFour key things all leaders should think about to unlock their potentialDiscover more and connect with DawnFor more information on East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service visit  esfrs.orgYou can connect with Dawn Whittaker directly on LinkedIn.

Crises of faith can happen in response to grief and loss, but they can also often be the result of discrepancy between ones personal life and the doctrines of their faith. The way a spiritual community responds to and support members largely determines whether the faith community becomes a source of support and mental resilience or shame and mental trauma. In fact an emerging field in psychotherapy is Religious Trauma. Here to help us navigate this sometimes scary world of challenging faith communities, finding your own spiritual path, or improving your faith community from within is NFCC's Clinical Director, Audrey Omenson, MA, LPC-S. About Audrey: Audrey is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor and the Clinical Director at the Nick Finnegan Counseling Center (NFCC). She oversees all of the clinical work done at NFCC, including the training and supervision of graduate practicum counselors and LPC-Associate counselors. She joined NFCC in 2014 but has worked with children, adolescents, adults and families in the mental health field since 2009. Her counseling experience includes work in outpatient clinics and schools, supporting clients challenged by anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, Autism spectrum disorders, and other neurological differences. She also works with clients who have experienced religious/spiritual trauma. In addition to serving as NFCC's, clinical director, Audrey operates her very own private practice focusing on religious trauma as well as major life transitions with adults and teens. When we choose a partner to go through life with it's not often that we think about what it would be like to lose them. Or if we do, we don't spend much time considering it because it's so difficult to think about. Any type of loss is hard, but when we lose the one other person we rely on to move through life with, it can be especially painful and isolating. Who will fill the roles they use to fill? Who do we turn to for support and how can we support other affected family members? There are a lot of 'well meaning' sayings around grief that can be even more problematic around the loss of our partner. Helping us learn different ways to navigate the long term impact of partner loss is NFCC's very own clinician, Janet Crow, MA, LPC. About Janet: Janet graduated from Arizona State University and subsequently worked in in the oil industry as an entrepreneur for over three decades. After becoming a widow in 2002, she pursued a Masters in Counseling – graduating from Houston Graduate School of Theology in 2007. Janet's 12 years of experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor, includes group and individual therapy sessions with adolescents, adults and couples. She enjoys working with families to find their ‘new norm' when faced with difficult circumstances as well as parents of teens who are navigating life changes. She is diligent in working with women dealing with depression as well as couples who's relationship needs a tune-up. We've all heard that question, “Who am I outside of this relationship/marriage”. Singleism, the term for people living life outside of a committed, romantic relationship, is an emerging area of focus on a state of living that many people experience at some point in life. There is so much wonderful momentum behind the concept of living life while single and destigmatizing past views of what “living single” means in order to open us all up to the possibilities of our very own selves! Helping us explore the beauty and challenges of single hood at any age is NFCC's Lead Clinician, Heather Timmis, MA, LMFT-S. Ditch the block!  In the day of social media we have allowed blocking and deleting to become the way to close a relationship, whether friendship or a romantic relationship.  However, that is not closure.  The need for cognitive closure, also known as NFCC, is a psychological term that describes the necessity for a firm answer and aversion towards ambiguity.  In this episode we discuss the emotional damage that blocking someone can cause, why blocking makes a person feel empowered and tips to close appropriately.

Credit is a daily issue for many people. People use credit for buying a house, or a car or furniture or even lawn mowers. But sometimes people get in over their head with credit and don’t know how to fix their situation. It can be difficult to navigate the companies advertising that they’ll help you fix your credit. How do you know what it costs or which ones are reputable? Today my guest, Barry Coleman for NFCC is here to break it all down.  Barry is Vice President of the Counseling and Education programs at the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), he and his team are responsible for the development and implementation of financial counseling and education programs that NFCC members deliver to consumers.   In this episode, Barry shares some valuable resources and advice for people that need a little guidance with their credit problems. Know Your Customer: Alloy CRO Laura Spiekerman

One of the biggest challenges in fighting money laundering is satisfying the KYC, or Know Your Customer, rules. These regulatory requirements make sense in concept -- they require financial companies to verify customers’ identities before letting them connect to the system, in order to screen out high-risk people and entities and as a foundation for meeting the legal mandate to monitor financial activity for potential crime. However, the traditional verification process has always been expensive and time-consuming. In recent years it’s also been creating new problems. My guest today has a company that is setting out to fix those. She is Laura Spiekerman, the Chief Revenue Officer of Alloy.   The new problems are two-fold. One is that millions of people lack traditional identity documents and therefore can’t gain access to the system at all. That isn’t actually a new issue -- it’s always been true -- but it’s becoming more acute because mobile technology is making it possible for more and more people to connect to the financial system through their phones, if they can identify themselves.  In much of the developing world, hundreds of millions of people cannot, because they lack formal ID documents (a factor that tends to disproportionately harm women, members of disfavored minorities and people with low incomes). Having large swaths of the population detached from mainstream finance, in turn, undermines economic growth and opportunity. As a result, many central banks throughout the world view KYC modernization as a top priority. For example, see my episode with Sanjay Jain who was one of the leaders of the India stack on their project that is connecting everyone in India to the financial system and mainstream commerce. Some governments are trying to create customer identity through biometric identification. Global organizations ranging from The World Bank to the Gates Foundation and the Omidyar Network (where I am a Senior Advisor) have all elevated AML as a core goal in their efforts to wide financial inclusion. The KYC barrier also impacts consumers in the United States, including many young people and immigrants or, say, people who have moved frequently. If a financial company cannot verify identity by investing a reasonable level of time and effort, it usually will not open an account. The second problem with the current KYC process hits the US and other developed countries even more directly. We still rely on traditional identity information like name, address and Social Security number that is, quite simply, no longer secure -- it’s widely for sale on the dark web. (Re-listen to our episode with Greg Kidd of globaliD) for more insight on that). The solution to both problems -- both access and insecurity -- is the same: more data and better technology. Alloy is bringing these into KYC. The company enables real-time decisioning through an API that lets a financial institution access the data it needs, in a fully transparent way, and that also provides a rules engine to control how to waterfall the data to put it into a rule. I spoke to Laura at the Comply 2018 conference in New York this year -- you’ll hear some of the conference bustle in the background. In our conversation, Laura describes the impact Alloy can make. In retail banking, they’ve been able to automate about 98% of decisions for onboarding, as opposed to a standard of about 50%. Once the remaining 2% are sent to manual review, they have also been able to reduce manual review times by about 95%, while also seeing reductions in fraud and increases in conversions, seemingly a win-win for all. Laura also shares her advice for other fintechs, including how to overcome the many barriers faced by regtech firms in trying to work with financial institutions. She talks about Alloy’s plans for building AI into their solutions. And she offers advice to regulators. Like me, she’s hopeful that the regulatory landscape is increasingly receptive to new technology. I know you’ll enjoy my conversation with Alloy’s Laura Spiekerman! In 1967, the Beatles sang: "I get by with a little help from my friends." That sentiment captures something at the heart of many people's financial lives today, and it embodies the idea behind the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), the oldest and largest nonprofit credit counseling organization in the U.S. I have known Susan Keating, NFCC's President and CEO, for about 30 years. I've been wanting to record a Barefoot Innovation episode with her, because the NFCC is on the front lines of the topics we're exploring here. They work directly, personally, with the people who are not thriving in our consumer financial system. The reasons people don't thrive are complex. We've talked about a lot of them, and I find it's easy to get excited about new technologies or regulatory challenges impacting them, and to lose sight of the real people who are immersed in these struggles. Helping these people is the driver behind much of the search for better solutions by industry, government, and the innovation world, and it's good to pause and think about who they are. As we discussed with CFSI's CEO Jennifer Tescher LINK TO IT, the so-called "underserved" market is enormous -- estimated between 70 and 140 million Americans -- and covers a huge percentage of the middle class. It is also heterogeneous. Data from NFCC, CFSI and others is breaking the old stereotype of a monolithic "low and moderate income" category whose problem is just not being able to afford traditional financial services.  Many underserved consumers, in fact, can afford to pay for high-cost financial services, and are doing so, but are stuck there due to a wide array of issues. Some of their problems are caused by their own errors and difficulties. Some are caused by the difficulties of serving them through the business models and cost structures that prevail in the industry today. Some are a mix of both. Both of these kinds of problems are ripe for improvement today, thanks to the innovations we discuss here on this show. I think, though, that we'll still have a big gap between new financial solutions and the people who need them, unless we build some bridges -- add in some glue -- in the form of human beings who can help people learn to use new technology. NFCC is one of the key organizations able to do this. Susan talks about all this in our conversation. She describes the massive scope of the challenge; the "new face of poverty" in the United States; the NFCC's focus on "breadwinner moms;" and its key new initiative for helping people manage student debt, with a insight into the daunting scope of that challenge. Susan's background: Susan began her banking career in 1974 at First Bank System in Milwaukee, where she became Senior Vice President of retail banking. In 1988 she joined MNC Financial in Maryland and later became President and senior banking executive for Maryland when NationsBank (Bank of America) acquired MNC in 1993. She went on to become the highest-ranking female CEO of a US-bank holding company, as President and Chief Executive of All First Financial from 2000-2002. Then in 2002, she was appointed to the Group Executive Committee of AIB (Allied Irish Banks plc), which is responsible for developing corporate strategy and overseeing management of AIB Group. In 2004 she took on the role of NFCC President. She thought is was a short term move but, to her own surprise, she's still there twelve years later, caught up in the mission. Upon reappointment after her first three-year term, she said, "The NFCC is uniquely positioned to serve the many consumers who are struggling to make ends meet and find their way to a better financial future. I am deeply committed to doing all that I can in order to lead the efforts in the years ahead." Susan also serves on Bank of America's National Consumer Advisory Council; is a board member of the Council on Accreditation; and participates in the Financial Regulation Reform Collaborative, a non-partisan group committed to finding solutions for reforming financial services regulation. NFCC: Last fall I had the honor of joining the NFCC's board on the occasion of the organization's 50th birthday. Today the NFCC works with 90 member agencies through more than 750 offices in communities nationwide. Its certified counselors counsel and provide financial education to three million clients annually, focusing on issues that include seniors and the military and guidance relating to financial literacy, mortgages, and credit cards. It recently launched a key initiative on helping people with student debt, and in helping illuminate that magnitude of that challenge, and plays an invaluable role in consumer financial research overall. Here are some links: 2015 Consumer Financial Literacy Survey 2015 State of the Financial Counseling and Education Sector Student Credit Counseling initiative  Enjoy my conversation with someone on the front lines -- NFCC's CEO Susan Keating. And please note: The video series is launched!  Please come to my new site www.RegulationInnovation.com  where we have launched my video briefing show. It's a practical guide for financial companies trying to figure out how to thrive on disruption-to thrive through the twin, intertwined challenges of technology disruption and regulatory disruption. We're off to a terrific start with the series. The next video will be called, "The 5 Tech Trends." I made it because I think financial people often underestimate the disruption underway, because we tend to think of fintech as a financial topic. In reality, it's mainly a technology topic. That means the forces shaping it lie mainly in the tech world, not the financial world. That in turn means they are mostly over the horizon, outside the field of vision of busy people focusing on finance. I've been spending a lot of time in that world, and am creating this video to explain what these five huge drivers are, how they are converging, and how they will transform both consumer financial services and financial regulation. Again, fintech is way more about "tech" than "fin." I'll also have a light-hearted short video for your entertainment, brought to you from my very own kitchen. I'm going to demonstrate an extremely odd little gadget that contains a big lesson for innovators. Coming episodes: Last but not least, come back next time to Barefoot Innovation, when my guest will be the visionary CEO of Opportun, Raul Vazquez. Among other things, he is totally fascinating on the topic of how he personally keeps up with technology. Up next in the queue after Raul, we'll have a short update with Simple CEO Josh Reich, and then an interview with the founder and CEO of Betterment, Jon Stein. See you soon! As a nation, Americans owe billions on outstanding credit cards and the average U.S. household with at least one credit card owes over $15,000 in credit-card debt.  Many Americans are in trouble as they endure harassment from debt collectors, yet only a fraction of people seek aid from a credit counselor. Many people confuse credit-counseling agencies with debt-settlement companies, who are often fraudulent organizations who make promises they can’t keep. Credit counselors advise people on how to make better budget and lifestyle decisions and develop a debt-management plan to pay back their creditors. Many counseling sessions are minimal in cost. Meanwhile, debt-settlement companies offer to negotiate with a person's creditors to reduce the amount of debt they own—and they usually charge a very large fee for their services. These debt-settlement organizations have deterred many people from getting good advice from credit counselors who can be trusted.  The National Foundation for Credit Counseling® (NFCC®), founded in 1951, is the nation’s largest and longest-serving non-profit financial counseling organization. The NFCC’s mission is to promote the national agenda for financially responsible behavior, and build capacity for its members to deliver the highest-quality financial education and counseling services.
