There's a stereotype out there that Catholics don't know much if anything about the Bible. If you have a question about a specific book or verse from Scripture, better to ask a Protestant. Why is this a stereotype? And is it a fair one? Or do those of us who are Catholics perhaps know more about the Bible than we think we do? These are some of the questions at the heart of Michael Peppard's book “How Catholics Encounter the Bible,” which was published in 2024 by Oxford University Press. Michael is a professor of theology at Fordham University, and this book is a true joy to read – host Mike Jordan Laskey learned something on almost every pgae. It's scholarly but also incredibly readable for non-experts. In this wide-ranging conversation, Michael and Mike talked about the lectionary, early Christian sculpture, Bruce Springsteen and so much more. To go along with the episode, we're running an excerpt of the book about the Biblical imagination found in the rosary and in St. Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises up at Jesuits.org. So after you listen, head to https://www.jesuits.org/stories/what-the-rosary-and-st-ignatius-spiritual-exercises-have-in-common/ to read the excerpt. In this interview I'm joined by Dr. Michael Peppard, Professor of New Testament, Early Christian Studies, Religion and Public Life at Fordham University, to discuss his new book, How Catholics Encounter the Bible. Over the course of the interview, we talk about why Catholics don't read the Bible the way Protestants do, the interplay of liturgy and Scripture, and what's great, and not so great, about the Catholic lectionary. Catholics don't read the Bible! Or at least, according to studies most don't read it in their homes. But according to our guest, Michael Peppard, that doesn't mean that they don't have a deep and meaningful relationship with it. This week, we're talking with Dr Peppard about his book How Catholics Encounter the Bible". It's a fascinating look at the world of Catholicism: the culture, the theology, and specifically the ways in which Catholic people learn and understand the teachings of the Bible. In a world where Christian sects often put high emphasis on dissecting each passage of the Bible, it's refreshing to talk about coming to the book with a bit more ease. We have all seen videos on the news or on social media of big-city fire departments doing their “thing.” Lots of apparatus and a large contingent of firefighters and support staff. It is often an amazing site and sometimes, we might get a little jealous. However, the majority of American firefighters are not in the big urban areas. Most of us serve suburban areas with mixed usage, residential, commercial, manufacturing, etc. My two guests on this episode are Nick Peppard and Sean Duffy. Both served a number of years in Florida, but have since moved north, with one to Michigan and the other to Wisconsin. Back in 2019 though, after each had been on “5-Alarm Task Force” as a guest, they came up with an idea for a podcast, “Make Due!” Their goal was to address the issues that suburban departments often face regarding limited equipment, personnel and high call volumes.Their podcast is almost three years old with plenty of guests and lots of listeners. Why? Because their podcast is about who we are and what we do. Sometimes they discuss tactics. Another topic might be personnel or apparatus issues. And on another, they may simply “shoot the breeze” over the proverbial firehouse kitchen table. Either way, this is a podcast you will want to follow and listen to. Two well-experienced firefighters discussing what they love most, after their families. Moreover, they live by the motto, “Families First!Find “Make Due” on all major podcast platforms! What separates a great assistant principal from a good one? If you aren't at the level of leadership you'd like to be, how do you get to being awesome? Today's guest will help us take a few important steps on that journey down the road to awesome!

Let's reflect on 2022, our goals, our successes, and our short comings. Great leaders are the ones who are willing to be open and transparent about their work. Great leaders are the ones who are aware of their failures and look at failure as an opportunity to learn and grow. As my friend Wade Stanford shared this week, "It is nearly impossible for you to have your best idea the first time you think about something. The most likely way to uncover important insights is to frequently revisit a problem. The longer you're in the game, the more ideas bubble up to the surface. Time unlocks insights."Today's episode has me sharing my goals from 2022 and sharing both the successes and the areas where I missed the mark. As well, I'm sharing my 2023 goals, reflecting on my #oneword for 2022 (which was #impact) and unveiling the word for 2023.Here is the link to Jon Acuff's podcast and specifically the episode I referenced todayHere is the link to this week's blog post: Putting 2022 in the BooksBook Darrin to speak at your school or conference contact us hereCheck out Darrin's blog for great leadership tips and ideasSign up for the Road to Awesome email list and newsletterHave a book idea you'd like to submit to Road to Awesome? You have to know what is expected of them and what strategies and processes should be evident in the classroom. However, we often overlook professional learning specifically for leaders designed to help them be…BETTER LEADERS. This is what we do at Road to Awesome. Working with leadership teams to be their most effective and efficient, one on one coaching for leaders, collaborative leader cohorts, or specific and job-embedded supports each have their own specific processes. I want to work with you to support YOU, your TEAM, or your district on growing leaders to their peak level of performance.
Does being a leader mean disciplining and correcting unacceptable behavior? Sure. But if you've ever found yourself using the majority of your time and effort on reprimanding, and failing to point out the good in your team, Dr. Darrin Peppard has a message for you. Dr. Peppard explains his personal experience with these concepts and so much more this week, including building trust and winning culture. This week on It Was a Thing on TV we look at a show from UPN, a Canadian kids game show and a legendary rant by Hannibal Smith. First, UPN tried throwing almost anything on their schedule in the late 90s. Shasta McNasty is no exception. It was so bad that the title was cut in half to just Shasta during the show's run. Even cross-promotions with WWF Smackdown couldn't lure viewers. This was basically the most 1999 TV show that ever 1999'd. Next, in honor of Susan St. James' birthday, we mark the occasion the only way we know how--by utilizing a running gag on this show. Uh Oh! was a Canadian game show for kids, despite an antagonist who looks like he should be running a sex dungeon. A kid's show with who appears to be a dungeon master ran for six seasons in Canada! Finally, In 1979, early on in Password Plus' run, George Peppard made an appearance as a celebrity player. On the first show, Peppard put his foot in his mouth, while ranting about forms NBC (and presumably other networks) had people sign. As a result, Peppard never played another game. The Truckee River is the lifeblood of the Reno/Sparks Area. It provides 85% of our drinking water, is a vital recreational feature throughout the city and our parks, and it takes a lot of work and energy to keep clean and usable for today and for future generations. Thankfully, there is an organization that is working to bring all the important parties together and make sure we are doing what's needed for the Truckee. One Truckee River (OTR) is a collaboration of public and private partners focused on the implementation of the OTR Management Plan, Phase I. Most of the Truckee River and corridor is managed and regulated by federal, state, and local agencies. OTR seeks to coordinate existing agency's efforts and documents and operates under the 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, Truckee River Foundation. This week's guest on Renoites is Iris Jehle-Peppard, the executive director of One Truckee River. Iris and Conor discuss the importance of the Truckee River to the Reno/Sparks area, and some of the initiatives that have been put in place to protect it. Topics include installation of new restrooms, vegetation management efforts, balancing the needs of various users of the river, coordinating between various public agencies with different priorities, clean-up and litter management, preventing accidental pollution by area residents from their yards, and much much more! You can learn more about One Truckee River at their website, https://www.onetruckeeriver.org Thank you so much for listening to this episode. If you have guest suggestions or feedback, please send Conor an email at conor@renoites.com
