The debate over how we fix Superannuation has sparked discussion over the years - and one expert has offered up a solution. Economists have stressed the importance over fixing this issue, as New Zealand stares down the barrel of an ever-expanding ageing population. In a new paper, Auckland University associate professor Susan St John introduced the idea of the New Zealand Superannuation Grant. "When we look to the future and we look at the fiscal pressures that are coming from an aging population and we look at the associated healthcare costs - we really do have to take our heads out of the sand." Around the same time, Auckland City Mission CEO, Helen Robinson, warned that food banks face closures in 2025. Producer Athena spoke to Economist, and Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Auckland, Dr Susan St John, about how the recession, and cuts to social services will affect New Zealanders.

The Policy has received some support, but several organisations advocating for the eradication of poverty and tax reform say it does not go far enough to address the wealth gap in Aotearoa. Caeden spoke about this with Glen Barclay, Chair of Tax Justice Aotearoa and the Better Taxes for a Better Future campaign which is a coalition of 20 organisations aiming to work for better taxes to grow revenue and have a fairer tax system. They started by asking Glen if Labour's announcement is fair tax policy. Caeden also spoke to economist Susan St John for the Child Poverty Action Group's position on the announcement. As they have been quite critical of it, they started by asking what the issues were.

How Bitterness Backfires - #9517

A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 4, 2023

It was a cold November night. The weather wasn't the greatest in Colorado. But Dick Ebersol's pilot felt they were good to take off. As head of NBC Sports at the time, Dick Ebersol was known as one of the most powerful men in the sporting world. But that night, he was just a dad who lost his son. The plane crashed on takeoff. Dick's older son literally pulled him from the wreckage. But his 14-year-old son Teddy didn't make it out. A few days later, Dick's wife and Teddy's mom, retired actress Susan St. James, were interviewed on NBC's "Today" show. She spoke with amazing poise. At one point, she talked about trying to help the surviving kids know how to handle some of the feelings that might come up - including what she referred to as "resentment." Out of her pain, she made a statement filled with so much insight I hope I'll never forget it. She said, "I've always told my kids, having resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die." I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "How Bitterness Backfires." Poison. It's a strong word to describe bitterness and resentment in your heart. But experience proves, as the Bible clearly confirms, that poison is the right word. And it's a poison that affects the person who's hurt you only a little, if at all. But for you, it's a poison in your soul that eats at you from the inside out most of the time. One of the Bible's warnings about bitterness begins with this sobering possibility: "See to it that no one misses the grace of God." Wow! That's in Hebrews 12:15, and that's our word for today from the Word of God. If you're wounded and if you're hurt, that's no time to be missing the grace of God - not when you need it the most. So how do you miss God's grace? Well, read on. "See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many." God's grace and our bitterness apparently cannot coexist in the same heart. Either God's grace will push out your bitterness, or your bitterness will push out God's grace. In reality, you don't hold a grudge - a grudge holds you. It's like you can't stop thinking about the very person you wish you could forget. But a grudge shackles you to that person emotionally. The poison in your soul isn't hurting them, but it's killing you inside. It's a huge, heavy backpack you carry with you everywhere you go. And hard or bitter feelings toward someone don't just hurt you. That negativity spills out on other people - people who don't deserve it. A darkness emanates from your personality, and it poisons other close relationships - sometimes ruining friendships, marriages, children, churches. There's only one antidote for the poison - forgiving. Ephesians 4 says "get rid of all bitterness...be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other..." Now comes the zinger. "...just as in Christ God forgave you." The person who hurt you may not deserve to be forgiven, but then we didn't deserve God's forgiveness. To forgive them is not to pretend there was nothing wrong with what they did, but it's releasing them completely to God for Him to deal with them. With God's strength, base your treatment of them, not on how they treated you, but on how Jesus treated you! And, by the way, if you've never been to the cross of Jesus in your heart, to have the sins of your life erased from God's book, that's why He died. And this may be your best opportunity in your life to go from dirty inside to clean. And from the death penalty that sin carries to the eternal life that Jesus gives. You tell Him, "Jesus, I know I've sinned. You died for that sin. You love me and I am pinning all my hopes on you today." You want to know more about this? Go to our website. It's ANewStory.com. And then you've been the forgivee - and you can become the forgiver. Or you store poison in your soul that will cripple or destroy. It's time for the antidote. It's time to be free. It's time to forgive.

Auckland University associate economics professor Susan St John told Kate Hawkesby an increase between $52,000 and $55,000 would be realistic. This week on It Was a Thing on TV we talk about Chris Evans, a robotic bunny and the Titanic voiced by Jason Alexander. Wait, what?   First, we're starting a month of Marvel universe-related shows, leading up to the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in May.  We start with a coming-of-age series about three boys attending an all-girls school from 2000.  Opposite Sex had as a supporting character, one of our favorites, Chris Evans.   Next, for the 109th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking last year, we looked at S.O.S. Titanic, a TV movie from 1979 with Susan St. James among others.  (UH OH!)  This year for the 110th anniversary, we're covering a much more light-hearted take, answering the question "What if Disney made a movie about the Titanic?"  Thanks to Robert Smigel, we think it might look a little like Titey.   Finally, in 2011, the BBC, the gold standard of TV networks in the UK, aired a late weekend afternoon game centered around a robotic rabbit in its own underground habitat.  I wish this was a late April Fools joke.  Don't Scare the Hare is as bizarre as TV shows come and, unsurprisingly, didn't have a very long shelf life.   Follow us @itwasathingontv on Instagram and Twitter and on Facebook over @itwasathingontvpodcast   Timestamps 0:35 - Intro 2:26 - Opposite Sex 1:06:16 - Classic Commercial Break 1:10:31 - Titey 1:26:15 - Computer Voice Lady Intro to Don't Scare The Hare 1:26:38 - Don't Scare The Hare

The Lapsed Fan continues its 30-week, 30 Wrestlemania journey with what the world had come to in 1986, Wrestlemania 2.It's the deuce, in perhaps more ways than one, as the WWF aims too high in trying to push the same buttons that made the first Wrestlemania such a success – a litany of celebrities and Mr. T mixing it up – while trying to basically have three Wrestlemanias at once. One city wasn't enough – this had to play out in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.Hosts Jack Encarnacao and JP Sarro – with another enlightening contribution from the guru Dave Meltzer – journey and lampoon their way through the second Grand Daddy of them All, including:- The New York Athletic Commission's insistence that they regulate Mr. T versus Roddy Piper in a worked boxing match, only to stand idly by as Piper threw a stool at T in between rounds and committed a litany of other heinous breaches without consequence- Fans are left asking “where's the beef?” when a mic fails- The Wrestlemania debuts of event icons Jake Roberts and Randy Savage- Susan St. James brings her … perspective to the color commentary chair- Dynamite Kid and Terry Funk's one real chance to strut their stuff on the WWF's grand stage- The NFLer who had heat with Andre leading into the Battle Royal- Big John Studd no-sells Bill Fralic- The debut of the blue cage- Hogan slams Bundy and victimizes Heenan- Check your drawers, it's G. Gordon LiddyJump on this speeding locomotive that is The Lapsed Fan's 30-week Wrestlemania mission!
