Title: Stephen's Last Sermon: Application Text: Acts 7:51-53 FCF: We often struggle knowing if we are God's true people. Prop: People who do not listen to or obey the Lord are not His people, so we must listen to and obey the Lord. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to Acts chapter 7. In a moment we will read the entirety of Stephen's Sermon one last time. I'll be reading from the LSB but you can follow in the pew bible starting on page 1236 or in whatever version you prefer. After all the explanation and after all the history, after building his case and forming his arguments, Stephen, filled with the Spirit, given words from God, now turns to his application. It is sharp. It is stilted. It is probably interrupted. And it deeply affects his hearers. We won't quite get to their reaction. We'll have to wait until next year for that. But we will finally round out the sermon and apply it to our lives. As a Christmas message, it may not be abundantly apparent that such a text is appropriate. But I promise you – this text has a particular Christmas flavor that is, quite frankly, unmatched. I hope it hits you hard as it did with its original audience. And I hope that it sticks in your mind as a Christmas message you won't soon forget. Please stand with me to give honor to and focus on the reading of God's Word. Transition: Well, this sermon didn't turn out to be as short as I anticipated. But I promised you a shorter sermon today, and I aim to keep that promise. So, let's dive in to Stpehen's last words of his last sermon. I.) Spiritually stubborn people are not God's people, so we must listen to and obey the Lord. (51a) a. [Slide 2] 51 – You men – stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears – i. Up to this point Stephen has spoken in historical generalities. ii. Though WE have taken pains to point out its aggressiveness toward the Sanhedrin and Judaism, it is possible that what he has said could easily have been dismissed or missed completely. iii. Certainly, they may not have understood everything. iv. But I believe that the Sanhedrin were no doubt beginning to understand Stephen's exposition of Israel's history. I believe they were starting to detect the critique of their present form of worshipping the temple, the land, and the law. v. Why do I say that? Because what Stephen says next leaves only two outcomes. Either they will repent – or Stephen will die. For Stephen to take his argument to this level indicates to me, that he was reading the room and seeing the Sanhedrin's understanding and perhaps even their anger. vi. But what did Stephen say that leaves only these two outcomes of this trial? vii. Let's look. viii. What does it mean that they were stiff necked? Stiff necked is an agricultural allusion. It applied to all manner of beasts that can be controlled by the turning of the head. ix. But when a beast of burden has discovered that it can tighten its neck and resist the leading of the bridle – then it will continue to keep its neck stiff and not be turned. x. To be stiff necked is to be obstinately stubborn, inflexible, immovable, and unteachable. xi. Because they are stiff-necked… he concludes that they are uncircumcised in heart and ears. xii. What does he mean that they are uncircumcised in heart and ears? xiii. To be uncircumcised is to be a Gentile. A worshipper of pagan gods. Outside of the covenant of Abraham. xiv. The prophet Jeremiah often repeated the idea that Israel who refused to listen to God's commands were uncircumcised in heart. xv. Moses told the people to circumcise their hearts and not stiffen their necks any longer. In Deuteronomy 10. xvi. What is Stephen saying? What is he calling them? xvii. My friends – Stephen is calling the Sanhedrin, the ruling religious body of the Jews, not true Jews. He is calling them cut off. He is saying that they are NOT part of the covenant with God given to Abraham. xviii. Why does Stephen conclude this? xix. Because they are spiritually stubborn. They are hard hearted and inflexible. xx. Stephen says – you are condemned heathens. Unable to hear. Unable to believe. Needing to repent. xxi. This is Stephen's Coup De Grace. The final blow. xxii. He says – you are not God's people. b. [Slide 3] Summary of the Point: The only possible conclusion that can be made about a person who is spiritually stubborn, unwilling to listen, unteachable, inflexible and bent on having their own way – is that they are not God's child. Turning the point positive, we see that God's true children are teachable, flexible and willing to go wherever the Lord leads – even when it is exactly opposite of what we might want. God's people are ready to follow the Lord no matter what. The apostles have already demonstrated this in the book of Acts. And here, Stephen is demonstrating this. Standing before the religious leaders of Jerusalem with a message of condemnation, knowing that either they will repent or it will cost him his life. Stephen stands, filled with the Spirit, and does as the Lord leads. Transition: [Slide 4(blank)] And so, Stephen shows the conclusion of the matter. They accuse him of blasphemy. Yet they are the ones pretending to be God's people – when they are not His people. His true people are not stubborn, stiff-necked, hard-hearted people. They go wherever He leads. But Stephen is not done giving evidence for why they are not God's people. Their stubbornness is only one symptom of their spiritual darkness. II.) People who continually oppose the Holy Spirit are not God's people, so we must listen to and obey the Lord. (51b) a. [Slide 5] 51b – You men… are always resisting the Holy Spirit. i. Stephen's second piece of evidence that proves they are not God's people is that they are always resisting the Holy Spirit. ii. Even in Judaism's shaky understanding of the trinity, the leading, empowering, equipping, and inspiration of the Holy Spirit was always seen as a divine act of Yahweh. iii. And when we read the word resist here, we must be careful not to import an incorrect meaning. iv. Sometimes we think of resisting as pulling against something. We think of going along with something but begrudgingly. We think of a rather tame definition of the word resist. v. But this Greek word has much stronger force. It means to counteract. It means to oppose. It means to work against. vi. So, Stephen's indictment of them as not being God's people rests not only on the fact that they are stubborn, hard hearted an inflexible, not only that they resist but that they actually oppose the power and leading of God Himself in the form of His Spirit. b. [Slide 6] Summary of the Point – Jesus taught that all manner of blasphemies could be forgiven someone. But blasphemy against the Holy Spirit could not be forgiven. To know what God says and is doing, and actively fight against it, is to blaspheme the Spirit. No one can continually blaspheme the Spirit and be forgiven. Again, to put this point positively, God's people follow the Spirit's leading. They listen to His voice of conviction, they follow His direction, they do not grieve Him. This is what all God's people do. Transition: [Slide 7(blank)] Two evidences against them have been brought, insisting upon the conclusion that they are not God's people. Two more remain. III.) People who continually abuse or disdain God's spokesmen are not God's people, so we must listen to and obey the Lord. (51c-52) a. [Slide 8] 51c – As your fathers did, so do you. i. For the third charge proving that the Sanhedrin and all who refuse to follow Jesus are not God's people, Stephen makes plain what has only been hinted at up to this point. ii. While certainly some of the Sanhedrin may have been able to see what he was saying earlier than this – now they all saw it clearly. iii. In the historical recounting of the Israel's history, with all those who acted against God's anointed and God's law, Stephen now clearly draws an equal's sign between their ancestors and the 1st century Jews and their religious leaders, the Sanhedrin. iv. Stephen says, that in effect, they are no different than Joseph's brothers, the people rejecting Moses, or the people making a golden calf. They are following in a long tradition of opposing God at every turn. v. But Stephen sharpens this point. It is not simply that they oppose God – for he has already said that. How specifically have they opposed God like their fathers before them did? b. [Slide 9] 52 – And which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? i. Stephen goes beyond the Pentateuch and stretches into the time of the United and Divided Kingdoms. ii. During this time God sent prophets, spokesmen to Israel to decree His will and foretell His judgements. iii. Stephen summarizes this time in Israel's history with a question. A question with an obvious answer. iv. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? v. I like how the NLT says this “Name one prophet your ancestors didn't persecute!” vi. Going back among the prophets, major and minor, we see Stephen's question proven true. vii. Regardless of the prophet, the Israelites had a long history of opposing, torturing, imprisoning, and otherwise persecuting God's prophets. viii. Most of the time the prophets were telling them things they didn't want to hear. It isn't difficult to understand why they would hate them or desire them harm. ix. Remember the comparison has already been made. You have done as your ancestors have done. x. This is important because while Jesus was alive, they insisted that they did not agree with their ancestors who persecuted the prophets. But Jesus insisted that they might say that in word – but in deed they are just like their ancestors. xi. Stephen wants them to see that their treatment of him and the apostles, is only following in a long line of persecution against God's anointed spokesmen. c. [Slide 10] They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, i. Not all prophets were killed, and certainly not all prophets who announced the coming of the Messiah were killed. ii. But Stephen's point still stands. Of the major prophets, all of whom spoke about the coming Messiah in great detail, three out of four were killed by the Jews. 1. King Manasseh sawed Isaiah the prophet in two. 2. Jeremiah was stoned by the people. 3. The leader of the Israelite exiles killed Ezekiel after he reproved them for worshipping idols. 4. Daniel is the only Major prophet who died of natural causes. But he died in Babylon, among pagans. iii. Again, Stephen is comparing the two. iv. He says that they too are like their ancestors who killed the prophets announcing the coming of the Righteous One… v. But wait…. They are not merely like them… d. [Slide 11] Whose betrayers and murderers you have now become. i. They are worse than their ancestors. ii. Their ancestors merely persecuted the prophets and killed those who prophesied about the coming Messiah. iii. But they have betrayed and killed the Righteous One Himself. They have murdered their own Messiah. This is far worse than killing His prophets. iv. It puts in mind the parable Jesus told in Luke 20 and Matthew 21. Where the owner of a vineyard went away on business and sent stewards to check on the workers. v. The workers abused and killed those he sent to check on their progress, until he finally sent his son, the heir to check on them. And they even killed him. vi. So too are the Sanhedrin and all of Judea. A vineyard that God owns that the religious leaders want for themselves. And now they have killed the Son of God. vii. That is idolatry my friends. e. [Slide 12] Summary of the Point: Paul predicts that in the last days people will accumulate to themselves false teachers who can tickle their ears. This is the result of people hating the accurate and powerful handling of God's Word. God's Word reproves, rebukes, corrects and instructs. That means that if a person is to accurately handle the Word of God and preach or teach it – most of the time it should cut us. It should prune us. It should hurt! But people who are not God's people… don't like being corrected. They don't like being reproved. They don't like being rebuked. They will not abide it. What's worse, is they will despise, slander, malign, hate and eventually kill those who preach God's word accurately. To put this positively… God's true children love when His Word is preached – and they love the stinging words of the preacher. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. God's people consider God's spokesmen to be a friend to them… mostly because they tell them what they don't want to hear – by the authority of God and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Transition: [Slide 13 (blank)] Three pieces of evidence have been laid at the feet of the Sanhedrin. Evidence that is incontrovertible. They are not God's people. But one final piece of evidence remains. IV.) People who continue to disobey God's law are not God's people, so we must listen to and obey the Lord. (53) a. [Slide 14] 53 – you who received the law as ordained by angels i. In the Pentateuch it is not mentioned specifically that angels assisted in the giving of the law to Moses on Mount Sinai. ii. Stephen mentioned this earlier and I kinda glossed over it because I knew another reference was coming. iii. There are some indications of this in Deuteronomy 33 and Psalm 68. iv. Paul in Galatians 3 and the writer of Hebrews confirm in the New Testament that angels were indeed present for the giving of the law. But Stephen would not have had the benefit of their letters since he died well before they wrote them. v. So where did this come from? vi. In the first century, it was largely assumed that anything God did with angelic hosts was very significant. And they revered the law as something very important and special. Therefore, based on Deuteronomy 33 and Psalm 68 and by Rabbinical commentary and tradition, they were teaching by this time that a heavenly host of angels were present for the giving of the law. Why? Because it was important. And since it was important, God's angels were present for the event. vii. This is exactly why Stephen mentions it. He uses the presence of angels for the receiving of the law as a way to heighten the importance of the law. viii. They have regarded the law to be of the utmost importance… b. [Slide 15] And yet did not observe it. i. It was not the giving of the law that was most important, but the keeping of the law. ii. Not as a way to earn God's favor, but rather as a natural product of trusting God. iii. To trust God and believe Him will naturally produce obedience to His law. iv. My friends, the chief most way that they did not observe the law is that they murdered the Lord of glory. v. Indeed, they violated most of the 10 commandments in by killing Jesus. And since Jesus is the fulfillment of the law, to kill the fulfillment is to reject the law itself. vi. Stephen says that even though they were the highest religious court in Jerusalem – and even though Judaism revered the law of God – they did just as their ancestors did when God gave them the law. Instead of receiving and obeying the law – they worshipped a golden calf. And instead of receiving and following the Son of God – the fulfillment of the law – they betrayed and turned Him over to the Gentiles to be killed. vii. [Slide 16] “In the earliest days of the nation, it disobeyed the law of God, although it had received that law by angelic mediation. And now in these last days, when God has spoken through no angel but through the Righteous One par excellence, Stephen's hearers had with even greater decisiveness rejected Him.“ F.F. Bruce NICNT Acts pg 153 viii. They were always disobeying God's law in letter and in spirit. c. [Slide 17] Summary of the Point: John 10:1-5 says “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he brings all his own out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. A stranger they will never follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.” All who do not diligently listen to and obey the commands of Christ – are not His sheep. They are not God's people. How do we know that we are favored of God and truly are God's people? How do we know that God is pursuing us? Those who are God's sheep, listen to their shepherd because they know His voice. Conclusion: So, CBC, we now have the very difficult job of isolating the one thing that Stephen teaches in his entire sermon. What is his primary doctrinal point? What have we learned and how should we live? Doctrinal Takeaway: [Slide 18] Mankind is naturally blind, lost, and dead. They are unwilling and unable to perceive God's power and provision in life. Indeed, they are prone to worshipping false gods in addition to the one true God AND they are also prone to worshipping a god that they think is the one true God but is only a lesser imitation. Since all this is true of mankind… God moves first. Because He must. He pursues those whom He wishes to pursue as He is free to do. He goes with those whom He favors. He pursues and upholds His people. Therefore, when we discover someone who stubbornly adheres to their own way, who works against God's leading, who despises correction and instruction, and who does not obey God's commands… no matter what they think they are, no matter how much they insist that they are God's people… they simply are not. How do we know we are God's true people? God's true people hear His voice and follow Him. God's true people love correction for it makes them more like Christ. God's true people love those who correct them in love. God's true people love His law. God's true people always entertain the probability that they are wrong and need help. God's true people are humble, obedient, loving, respectful, followers of God. So, my friends, be this. And now that we have seen Stephen's sermon in total, I feel it right and appropriate to improve upon the fully developed doctrinal takeaway to share with you some applicational insights. 1.) [Slide 19] Mind Transformation: “What truth must we believe from this text?” or “What might we not naturally believe that we must believe because of what this text has said?” God's people listen to and obey Him. a. Who are God's people? Such a question could illicit a myriad of answers. i. Israel ii. Christians iii. All mankind - Did you know in the song here comes Santa Claus, there is a line that says that Santa knows that we are all God's children and that makes everything right. Obviously, the world things that all of us are God's children. God's people. b. This text has told us exactly who God's people truly are. c. First, they are those whom God pursues. He loves them first, because they were unwilling and unable to love Him. So, He came for them and goes with them. d. Second, Stephen's sermon shows us by negative example who God's people aren't. e. The Jews were the inheritors of God's law, descendants of those whom God spoke to directly. With a long and rich history of God' claiming them as His portion among the nations. f. The Sanhedrin were the religious and political leaders of the Jews – the most pious among them. g. Yet, they killed their own Messiah, deified their temple, assumed they could only keep outward parts of the law and remain pure, and nationally assumed that God would one day destroy all their earthly enemies. h. In short, they did not listen to or obey God. God sent His Son, the Messiah, the fulfillment of the law, the temple not made with human hands, the King of the Universe… and they rejected Him. i. How can you be God's people and reject His Son? j. We in our high theology flights of fancy worry and fret over wondering who is God's elect, who has God chosen for Himself, who is God pursuing? Is it me? Am I one of God's elect? k. There is a very simple answer to this question that the bible repeats to us over and over and over and over again. Are you ready? l. God's people listen to and obey Him. To the extent that any who claim to be His but do not listen to or obey Him – are liars and the truth is not in them. m. God's people bear the scars of the Holy Spirit's hostile takeover of their hearts. And they are, even now, being pressed into the mold of Christ. They are even now repenting of sin. They are even now believing the gospel that Christ died for their sin. They are, even now, living for Him because they love Him. 2.) [Slide 20] Refutation: “What lies must we cast down” or “What do we naturally believe, or have been taught to believe, that this passage shows is false?” We must deny that we can be saved and bear no fruit. a. The Sanhedrin believed that because they were descendants of Abraham, they received an inheritance in the promises God made to Abraham by default. b. Before we scoff at such thoughts – we must consider what things we have been taught or things we naturally assume to be true that are corrected here. c. We naturally conclude that because our parents were Christians, or because we've prayed a prayer, or because we made a decision – that we are Christians. We have been taught that as long as we believe key facts about Jesus, that we are saved. d. But my friends - if we do not bear fruit – then we are a dead tree worthy of the fire. e. Don't misunderstand. I am not saying that we bear fruit in order to become a living tree. i. An avocado does not turn black in order to become old. It turns black because it is old. ii. Likewise, a person does not listen to and obey God in order to become God's child. They listen to and obey God because they ARE God's child already. God does the saving – we bear the fruit. f. But a fruitless tree, salt that has lost its savor, seed that has yielded no crops – none of these are fit for anything except the garbage heap. g. No, my friends. You cannot be saved and enter His kingdom if you do not bear fruit. If you are not being pruned. If you are not hating your sin and loving His law… There is no reason for you to hope. h. There is only the fearful expectation of judgment. 3.) [Slide 21] Exhortation: “What actions should we take?” or “What is this passage specifically commanding us to do that we don't naturally do or aren't currently doing?” We must repent and obey the Lord a. Stephen's message was obviously aggressive – but it isn't like the Sanhedrin had no hope. b. He is clearly imploring them to turn from their current path and believe on Jesus of Nazareth as God's Messiah. c. My friends, during this Christmas season, you like the Sanhedrin have heard the story before. d. Just like the Sanhedrin had heard the story of the history of Israel – just as they had studied and memorized all that had happened – and just as they repudiated the actions of those who disobeyed – So also you know about Christ being born in a manger. You've heard about the shepherds coming to honor him. The wise men coming from the east. You know the story of the gift God gave in His Son. You have even heard about him growing up and dying on a cross for the sins of His people. e. But knowing the story is not enough my friends. Knowing the story and living as you always have… is no benefit to you. Loving your sins and resisting God's law, forsaking the gathering of His people, living for you plus Him – trusting in you plus Him… all of this puts you exactly in the same place as the Sanhedrin. f. But this Christmas… this season… rather than letting the story you know well wash over you yet again… perhaps the Lord has cut you to the heart. Perhaps His arrow has struck deep. Perhaps what once was rock and inflexible is now ready to move. g. Would you repent of your sin and self-righteousness? Would you not merely believe that such a Savior existed once – but would you trust Him as your only hope? Would you receive Him as your substitute for sin and follow Him all the days of your life? h. Is God pursuing you this Christmas season? Is He calling to you? His sheep hear His call. His sheep obey His voice. i. Would you answer? Would you obey? 4.) [Slide 22] De-Exhortation: “What actions should we stop doing” or “What behaviors do we naturally practice that this passage tells us to stop doing?” We must stop despising and resisting the reproof, rebuke, correction and instruction of the Word of God and all who would be bold enough to give it to us! a. We live in a world of thought police. b. We once lived in a world where everyone said “You do you” or “Live your truth.” We have moved on from this foolishness but unfortunately, we are out of the frying pan and into the fire. For now, the world demands that we share their same values. There is no room for disagreement. If you disagree then you are abomination. c. Would it surprise you to know that God's Word is equally exclusive with its message. d. It does not counter the current culture's methods – only its message. e. The Scriptures are the final authority for faith and practice for all men. It makes no exceptions. It makes no excuses. And it demands that you yield while it remains unyielding. It demands you be a student as it teaches. It demands you flex as it remains inflexible. f. As such, God's children must grow to love God's Word. Not because it is full of promises and full of platitudes for having your best life now. Not because I can always find a verse or two to support what I already thing. g. No, God's children love His word because it tears down false belief and hunts down and murders all the sin lurking in our hearts. h. God's true children ought to love having their toes stepped on. Crushed! Shattered! i. The same sword that cuts, slices, dices, and strips away – is a sharp scalpel in the hand of our God cutting away the cancer that kills us. j. Ah we may be sore after – but better sore today than dead tomorrow, yes? k. We must love when God shatters us on the Rock of His Word. And we must love and be thankful for any friend who would be so courageous as to lovingly dash us upon its immovable and mighty edge. l. We don't do this naturally. Our flesh raises in defense against the reproof… but our spirit says… Ah yes – it will hurt but for a moment but at last I'll be free of the parasite that steals from my joy. At last, I will be rid of the stench of death that that wily dragon left on me. At last, I will be out of the noose choking me of life in my Savior. 5.) [Slide 23] Comfort: “What comfort can we find here?” or “What peace does the Lord promise us in light of this passage of scripture?” God pursues His people. a. No matter what – this comfort remains. b. God pursues His people. So much so, that He provided a Savior to them so that all who are believers might not die without hope – but would instead die with hope that the Son He sent will save them from eternal death unto eternal life. c. That little baby in a manger… is God's greatest act of pursuing His people. d. While we could climb no higher - being made of dust… He stooped low to become dust to save us. e. My friends. There is no greater hope. [Slide 24(end)] Let me close with a Christmas Prayer by Ephriam the Syrian, a theologian and hymn writer who lived in Turkey in the 300s AD. We are not sure what to call you, Child of the Living One. Not the child of Joseph; you are not actually his blood. And while you are the son of one, we should be calling you the son of many. Ten thousand names would not be enough to call you, since you are the Son of God and also the Son of Man. You are David's son and Mary's Lord. For your sake Mary also was hated. The one who [bore] you was persecuted. The sea raged against her, as it did against Jonah. Herod, the raging wave, sought to drown the Lord of the seas. But Adam would rejoice, for you are the key to paradise. So, we will flee with you, that we may gain life wherever we go. Prison with you is no prison, because we gain heaven through you. With you the grave is no grave, for you are the resurrection! In Jesus name we pray… Amen. A hymn from a famous hymn writer combines well with the scripture of II Chronicles 19:11: May the Lord be with the one who is good. May He tell you the story of Jesus And write on your heart every word, Till you sing with the angles in chorus: Glory to God in the highest Peace and good tidings to earth. Until we meet again, go in peace.

Before I began the interview with Naomi Craig about Ezekiel's Song, I kind of went crazy and left it in to give you a chuckle. But Naomi and I chat about her upcoming release, why she chose to write about Ezekiel, and what areas she focused on. Listen in and hear her heart for the Word and for stimulating readers to love it and live it. Oh, and that song I couldn't remember? Well, I found it after a BUNCH of hunting on YouTube. Here you go! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Has Ezekiel Always Confused You? How about a Little Fictional Clarity? There's SO much to write about in Ezekiel, but after talking to Naomi Craig, I feel like I got a pretty good grasp of where she's taking this book without feeling like I don't need to read it now that we chatted, and that's always great. Naomi shows service in the temple, how Ezekiel could have had a mentorish relationship under Jeremiah, and even what kind of woman his wife might have been. Personally, I love the "Darcy-ish" meeting where he totally insults her and accuses her of being an idolatress. Let me tell you something. I cannot wait to read that! Seriously! God had Ezekiel do a lot of weird things, and I always wondered how he managed some of it, but Naomi brings out possibilities by focusing on this wife that we don't know much (anything) about. How cool is that? Naomi also gave us a couple of glimpses into what's coming next! She's #TeamBlue in the Keeping Christmas novella collections, writing about Herod's palace and the wise men's appearance looking for "the King of the Jews."  And... from a scribe's perspective!  How cool is that? Also... next up is a book about a woman in Ephriam's lineage who built three cities. A woman credited with the building of these cities!  I cannot wait! I love how Naomi focuses on how strong Biblical women were. So often we think of them as downtrodden and little more than cattle, but God shows how much He loves His daughters in the Word, and He definitely allows them to shine. We saw that in Naomi's debut novel Rahab's Courage. Ezekiel's Song by Naomi Craig A prophet's heart broken, a woman's joy gone. What does Yahweh have planned for His people? On the brink of Jerusalem's demise, devoted priest, Ezekiel, sees the insincerity of Judah's worship. Despite his efforts to call the people back to true worship of Yahweh, priests, artisans, valiant warriors, and royals are exiled to Babylon. When God gives him messages of continued judgment for the people in his homeland, his heart breaks. How can he minister to the people from so far away? The presence of the Lord is tangible when Shiriel sings in the temple, and her voice prepares the hearts of many to worship. When she is exiled to Babylon, her faith is shaken. Does the Lord's presence extend beyond Jerusalem and His holy temple? Ezekiel is struck mute and paralyzed as he begins his prophetic ministry, and Shiriel devises a plan to get the Lord's message back to the unfaithful people of Judah. Shiriel struggles with discontentment as serving the Lord looks nothing like she'd imagined. Can she provide for her family and carry out her husband's ministry when her joy is gone, and her own dreams are placed on hold? How will Yahweh save His people from themselves? Find out in Ezekiel's Song! Ezekiel's Song is available at 30% off paperback and at a discount for Kindle, too through release week, so visit Naomi's WEBSITE for more information. Introduction John 11-12 Now today we are studying what is traditionally known as the triumphal entry. But its not triumphant at all. It's actually tragic. It's depressing. It's grossly carnal. That may surprise you. Maybe you've only thought of this event as a high point, a ministry mountaintop for Jesus. Why are we using words like tragedy, depressing and carnal to describe an event in which the nation of Israel pours out of the city to welcome Jesus as King. Well, let's take a closer look. Now there's no way to appreciate this passage unless we go back and build the drama leading up to this point. And what we need to do in particular is rehearse the ways in which the threat to Jesus' life had been steadily growing over the past few months. This thread is very easy to trace in the book of John. Now let's just rehearse what's happened so far. In John chapter 8, Jesus makes some very clear statements about who he was. Do you remember, “Before Abraham was, I am” and the Jews correctly hear that statement as blaspheme; Jesus, claiming to be God; so they pick up stones to stone him. Death threat #1 Then in John chapter 10, just a couple months later he preaches the good shepherd sermon during the feast of dedication. The religious leaders approach him and say, “Tell us plainly who you are.” I and the Father are one and they pick up stones to stone him. Death threat #2 Now Jesus is in danger, no doubt, but I want to make an observation about the type of danger. What was going in both of these passages was a reaction. In both these passages, a small group of religious leaders would have been on the scene. Their sentiments certainly would have been reflective of a much larger group but the larger group was not present. Had they succeeded in stoning Jesus, they almost certainly would themselves have been thrown in prison. There would have been consequences. The Jews were not given liberty to carry out capital punishment. That was a job reserved for Rome. John 8 and 10 was Pharisaical vigilante justice. Now what happens after that second stoning attempt. Do you remember? Jesus flees to Perea to escape the area ruled by Pontius Pilate, to that area beyond the Jordan that was under the jurisdiction of Herod Antipas. And I want to take you back there just for a moment to remind you of that event. The Pharisee approach Jesus while in that area and they are trying to lure him back into the domain of Pilate. Jesus isn't buying it. And then he makes this startling prediction. Do you remember this? Luke 13 That's Psalm 118. This is a Messianic Psalm given to Israel to prepare Israel to welcome her Messiah. So essentially what Jesus tells these guys is you won't see me again until the city welcomes me as Messiah. Now the point is, if you had been standing there that day, you would have said, “There's no way that is going to happen!” There is just too much hostility up there. The religious leaders rule that hill with an iron fist. They would never let that happen. Let me give you an analogy. After 9/11, Osama Bin Laden was the most wanted man on earth. George Bush, our president at the time, was trying to destroy him. Can you imagine Osama Bin Laden sending George Bush a message, “You won't see me until I walk into the whitehouse as president.” That's overstated a bit, but you get the point. How in the world did this happen? Now, it actually gets even worse. What happens next? While in Perea, Jesus gets word that Lazarus is sick. And do you remember what the disciples say when Jesus says, “We are going to Jerusalem to wake him?” Do you hear the fear? After their complaints are ignored, they agree to go and we read of Thomas' remark. Let us go with him that we may die to. In other words, its really dangerous. It's deadly. But it gets worse still. Now he never actually visits Jerusalem. Lazarus lived in Bethany which is just on the outskirts. And Jesus never actually sees the religious leader while he is there. He manages to avoid them. But word gets to the religious leaders that he has raised Lazarus and do you remember their response when heard of this indisputable proof had been performed? There's death threat #3. Now, you are starting to pick up on a theme. But its important to understand that this death threat #3 at the end of John 11 is of a different species than we have seen thus far. This is almost certainly a reference to the Sanhedrin, that Jewish supreme court composed of 70 men. You had 35 on each side and then the high priest in the middle. *So when we read of Caiaphas saying, “You know nothing at all.* It's better that one man should die for the people than everyone die.” That's Caiphas sitting in this seat addressing the Sanhedrin. Now here's the point: the key distinction is this official determination to try Jesus according to the legal processes available to them, legal processes that were of course highly greased. We need to try him in our courts. We need to drag him into Rome's courts. And we need to convince Rome to nail him to the cross. That's a much different animal than the reactionary rage we see in chapters 8 and 10. The point is to illustrate the increasing seriousness of the situation. There is an escalation in the resolve to destroy. From Jesus' perspective, it's one thing to be in danger of death knowing that the law protects you. It's another thing to be in danger of death knowing the law itself is after you. Jesus is not merely an unliked person. He's now a criminal target. They've stapled up wanted posters. To put it in modern terms, everyone's phones go off in unison and there's an Amber alert with a description of Jesus. So Jesus gets word of this and he flees this time to a city to the North called Ephraim. Politically, everything is charged. Everyone knows he's in deep trouble. And you feel that tension, so-thick-you-could-cut-it-with-a-knife tension in the next three verses. Do you see the suspense? Everybody is so intrigued by Jesus. Word is circulating like crazy that this miracle worker raised Lazarus from the dead and Lazarus is walking around (go talk to him yourself). And there's frenzy and excitement and curiosity. But the politics are clearly felt by everyone. For some reason the religious leaders hate this guy and want him dead. And if your an average Joe, you say, "This is going to be interesting. Passover is the most important pilgrimage feast and we've never seen Jesus miss one? But man, he is not liked by these guys. Do you think he'll risk his neck and come up to Jerusalem at all? If he does, there's going to be fireworks. So that was all setting the stage. Do you see the problem. How is Jesus going to ride into Jerusalem to the shouts of the people, to the wide-eyed amazement of the crowds when he's the most wanted man in Jerusalem? You ready for this? We are going to turn to Luke 17:11 and I'm going to show you something. Now this verse you might just blaze right over in your Bible reading. It seems nearly inconsequential on the surface. This verse describes Jesus going up to Jerusalem for passover to see Mary, Martha and Lazarus for the meal we talked about last week. Now we would think nothing of that whatsoever except for the fact that we were told from John's gospel that prior to making that journey Jesus was in Ephriam. Let's get our bearings. Now if Jesus was in Ephraim and his destination was Jerusalem Why in the world would Jesus choose a route that goes north through Samaria and Galilee? That the opposite direction. Well, there's a reason and it's really interesting. Most of the population of Israel in Jesus' day was in Galilee, by far. The reason is obvious. Galilee was pleasant. Galilee is well-watered. It's flat. Easy to plant crops. Compare that to Judea. It's hilly. It's rocky. It's harder to find water. The only reason to live in Judea is because that's where the temple was. So three times a year for the pilgrimge feasts you'd have these migrations from Galilee to Jerusalem. And they would meet up in this valley here. Now there were two routes. By far the easiest and most direct route would have been on what's called the ridge route. Back to our map here But the problem is it goes through Samaritan territory. And because Jews either didn't want to defile themselves by going through Samaritan soil or because they wanted to avoid any danger or conflict, they would opt to go this other way via the rift route that follows this syro-african rift. It's way, way harder because you have descend deep into this rift and then haul yourself out of it. And let me show you with a topigraphical map what I mean by much more difficult. This is what Jesus was doing. He was going up and joining these bands of traveling pilgrims. And the record is really detailed at that point. Jesus is not sneaking into Jerusalem. He's charging. He's leading a band of pilgrims boiling over with excitement. All along the way he's healing people. He's teaching. This is where he cleanses the ten lepers and only one of them comes back. When he gets to the city of Jericho we are told that he heals the blind Bartameus. He's teaching on divorce. So the journey would have taken around a week. And you can imagine that with all this excitement, the commotion is building. The traveling band of pilgrims is growing as word spreads. Now this basically brings us up to last week. Jesus is heading up to Jerusalem but where does he stop first? This is what we preached on last week. First he's going to stop in at Lazarus' house in Bethany. And when did he get there? Six days before the passover. Now if you put that time, together with that place, the drama of the narrative jumps to life. Why? Because Bethany was just outside the Sabbath zone. Do you remember, one of the stipulations of the Sabbath is that you couldn't walk more than a Sabbath days journey. A Sabbath's day's journey was something like 1.2 miles. And it wasn't like you only had 3000 steps that day and then you had to sit down. It was a zone. So the rabbis would go out all the major gates and put these markers on the road to let you know you had reached the Sabbath zone for that city. Here's an example of one of those markers found in a city in Galilee. It's three Hebrew letters that spells Shabbat or Sabbath. So Bethany was just outside that Sabbath zone. So if you are traveling with Jesus and you are hoofing it into Jerusalem Friday night because as soon as it's sundown Sabbath begins and you see Jesus peel off into to Bethany and he's waving at you. And on the way into the city you see the Sabbath marker. Put all that together in your mind. What is everyone in the city asking? Jesus is a wanted man. Do you think he will come to Jerusalem at all? You are traveling into the city and you have an answer that comes in two parts. Jesus is coming. And He'll be here Sunday morning. Now this isn't conjecture. We know this frenzy was happening based on the record. Remember how last week ended. After Mary anointed Jesus' feet with oil. When the large crowd learned that Jesus was there. Learned that Jesus was there? How did they learn? That traveling band of pilgrims that came in with Jesus spread through the city like spilled ink on a map. And the news leaks into every home into every ear. And whether your destination was Bethany or Jerusalem or Bethlehem which is just a short distance away, the news is spreading. And so everyone is waiting for Sunday morning when they know he will come into the city. And look at what the text says! Now first off, when the Bible says large crowd, it's not kidding around. Josephus was a historian and he records the number of lambs slain during the passover of 66AD as being 256,500 lambs. And the minimum number of people you could have per lamb was 10 so that would be 2.5 million people. Maybe those numbers are exaggerated. Maybe they are accurate. Either way we are talking just throngs and throngs of people shoulder to shoulder spilling out into the city. And these are all Jews. Like all 2.5 million of them. And what are all 2.5 million Jews shouting. Hossana, which is Hebrew for, “Save Us!” Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel. KING. Are you hearing this correctly. These are words of sedition. Guys, there is so much drama here. What did Passover celebrate? It celebrated God raising up a deliverer Moses who, through miraculous signs and wonders, overthrew their Gentile overlord in Egypt. Well, there's a Gentile overlord they'd like to overthrow, Rome. And who is Jesus? Well, he's a miraculous deliver. His name is Jesus which in Hebrew is Joshua which means Savior. He's here to save us. If that's not enough, you have the Daniel 9 prophesy which is ticking. Daniel 9 prophesy. That clock had been ticking. So all this commotion. People are laying down Palm branches. Let's talk about these palm branches for a moment. Remember back in John chapter 10 we learned about the origins of the feast of dedication. If you attended Benj Foreman's NT backgrounds class you learned all about this along with Judas Maccabeus. The quick version, is that about a 150 years before Jesus' day, the Syrian ruler, Antiochus, had stormed into Jerusalem and killed thousands of Jews and desecrated the temple by sacrificing a pig on the altar, forcing the priests to eat its flesh. Talk about seething with anger. Talk about just pure hatred for your Gentile overlords. The Jews needed a Savior. They needed a deliver. And Judas Maccabee was their man. His nickname was the hammer. He led them in a successful revolt and they were able to reclaim the temple. And get this, the crowds celebrated his victory by waving palm branches. They stamped the image of palm branches into coins to commemorate the victory. And what is everyone shouting. Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. What did Jesus tell the Pharisees 3 months previous while he was in Perea. You will not see me again until the city of Jerusalem welcomes me with the chant, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” What they are doing? They are quoting Psalm 118. So put it all together: It's passover which commemorates Moses and deliverance from Egypt. They are quoting Psalm 118 which is a Messianic Psalm that anticipates the coming Messiah. They are laying down palm branches which remembers Judas Maccabees. They are calling him KING (there's only one king). They are shouting out SAVE US. You have revolutionary energy on your hands here. Now stop RIGHT THERE. Remember we said that John chapter 12 is written to show us this massive divide between who people perceive him to be and who he really is. Remember last week. To Mary Jesus was worth Everything all the way to Judas who believed Jesus was worth nothing. How much more opposite can you get. And here we have that same phenomena played out in dramatic 3D color. We call this TRIUMPHAL entry. What did Jesus want? He wanted repentance. Wasn't that the message of John the Baptist? Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. But that's not what he got. He got the rock star adulation of a crowd that really wanted to use him. Think about rock star. He's got 100,000 fans but they are all there using him. Entertain me. And the second they can't do that, they kick him to the curb. That's what's going on here. And it breaks the heart of Jesus. It just absolutely crushes him. Because he can see what's going on. What is their solution to the problem. War. Insurrection. Military action. Luke 19 Now in rides Jesus. Not on a stallion but on donkey. Jesus has was the Pharisees want (the admiration of men). And yet it's the possession of that very thing the Pharisees want that causes Jesus to weep.

Sermon ManuscriptWe made it to Christmastime. With all that's happened in 2020, last December seems like a decade ago. This year felt like that well known quote from CS Lewis in the Chronicles of Narnia… “always winter never Christmas.” But we've had hope. Even with COVID, with the racial tension, with the political anger that's divided families and friends and neighbors this year… we've had hope. Hope in Christmas. The long winter of 2020, so to speak, has finally brought us to Advent and Christmas. In which we hope. Now, I don't mean hope in the cultural sentimentality of Christmastime. What I mean is a hope that's grounded in the promise of Christmas. The hope of Christ, the messiah, the promised one, who is, as these verses remind us, born of the virgin and who is Immanuel – God with us…Since we've been studying Acts for the last couple of months, I thought it would be good for us to get a little dose of the Old Testament this Advent. And, of course, what better Old Testament focus during Advent than Isaiah. You probably recognize Isaiah 7 verse 14 this morning “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel”, then next week, Isaiah 9, “For unto us a Child is born, a son is given…” That's our memory verse for the month. The week after next Isaiah 11. “there shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit”Now, we often think of these verses in isolation… but we don't really appreciate what was going on around him as Isaiah is prophesying.Honestly… Isaiah's promise of the savior is not bound up in Christmas platitudes, he's not standing in the city square with everyone holding candles, His prophecy is not grasped by the people with this wonder of anticipation. No, rather quite the opposite. Isaiah's prophecy of Jesus birth, here in chapter 7… comes in the middle of sin and judgment, war and destruction… not peace and joy.Our moment in history this year is not the same as Isaiah's… but I think compared to other years, this year it's easier to push aside the cultural niceties of Christmas. That's what we need to do to grasp this Isaiah 7 promise. In these chapters, there's a raw sense of reality. But it's out of that reality that God promises a savior. In the middle of sin and instability, military threats, God gives this amazing sign. The virgin will conceive and you shall call his name Immanuel.ContextFirst though, who is Isaiah? Well, he's a prophet. A prophet is kind of like God's Press Secretary. Someone who speaks God's word as God gives it. And God placed him in Judah. There used to be one nation of God's people, Israel. But the tribes could not get along, so they split into two nations. The northern kingdom, called Israel, had forsaken God. Sometimes the northern kingdom is also called Ephraim, one of its main tribes. That's important to understand in these verses. Specifically verse 17. The southern kingdom, also called Judah, is centered on Jerusalem. The kingship in the south is sometimes called “the house of David” King David. That's also important to understand in these verses. Especially verse 12.So, Isaiah is a prophet in Judah. He's in Jerusalem. And here, Isaiah is prophesying to king Ahaz, the King of Judah. Ahaz is a direct descendant of King David. What's going on? A geo-political crisis… all throughout the middle east. Three separate nations are vying for power and are against Judah. The northern kingdom, Ephraim, The nation of Syria, and the growing power of Assyria. That may be confusing. Syria and Assyria. Two separate nations. Ephraim in the north is on the brink of war. A war that will take them down. But they don't even know it. So Ephraim aligns itself with Syria.Judah, the southern kingdom, is afraid! They are shaking in their boots! It says as much earlier in chapter 7. King Ahaz is afraid. Jerusalem is threatened. The line of his Kingship is exposed. There's instability all around them. Threats of war. When you are seemingly surrounded by enemies, where do you turn? Let's not make this theoretical. When a destructive virus is all around. And when the very truth that you believe in is attacked by this growing cultural hostility to Christianity. Matters of identity. Life. Sin. Salvation. When there's a political war around you. where do you turn? Where should the church turn?Well, let me tell you what King Ahaz did. With the threat from the north… from Ephraim and Syria. Ahaz aligned Judah with Assyria! He made an agreement with the King of Assyria. A political pact. He didn't turn to God, no, he turned to a wicked nation to protect them from other wicked nations. It gets even worse.Ahaz himself is a wicked king! You can read all about his wickedness in the book of 2 Kings chapter 16. Ahaz led Judah down the path of worshipping false gods. He took the gold of the temple, God's temple, and gave it to the king of Assyria! He also defaced the rest of the temple. And he sacrificed his own son in fire to a false god.Do you get the picture here? Sin and war all around. An evil king, aligning with an evil nation. Not the warm fuzzies of Christmastime. But despite all this, God is merciful! Through Isaiah, God tells Ahaz that the kingdoms of Ephraim and Syria will not prevail. No, they'll be defeated. And that bring us to verses 10 and 11 here… God basically says to Ahaz, “Do you want to know for sure that this will come true? Well, I'll give you a sign. Ask anything you want… Anything. As deep as Sheol itself.” Sheol is the place of the dead… “or as high as heaven.” In other words, God is merciful. He's giving Ahaz yet another chance to trust him. And look how Ahaz responds in verse 12. “I will not put the Lord god to the test.” That sounds pious, doesn't it? Well, in actually, it's hollow words. Ahaz is again rejecting God here. He has already made his pact with the King of Assyria. He's not really interested in God and not interested in God's sign. That's why in verse 13. Isaiah responds with righteous anger. “Hear then, O house of David!” Reminding Ahaz of his lineage. “Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also?” He's saying… Will you try to wear God out with empty words? With a heart that is far from him?Well, Isaiah goes on… even with Ahaz's rejection of God. God continues to display his great mercy. God gives him a sign, even though he didn't want one. We see that well known prophecy in verse 14 an following. We'll come back to the sign in a minute… but first, I want you to see where this prophecy is going.Look down at Verse 17. It's a dagger to Ahaz's heart! Isaiah says to Ahaz… “The Lord will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father's house such days as have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah” Isaiah is prophesying about a judgement. A future judgment that will be as bad as when the tribes divided. And then, here it is, God names the very one who he will use to judge Judah. The end of verse 17. “the king of Assyria!” How's that for poetic justice. Ahaz's co-conspirator. The one whom Ahaz had given the gold of the temple! The very nation with whom he put his trust in will be the very instrument of God's judgment.Where should we turn when surrounded by enemies? When we fear like Ahaz and Judah feared. Fear of COVID. Fear of the consequences if we stand for the truth of God's word.Just like Ahaz, our temptation will be to run to the world. To align ourselves with movements or to trust in political agendas. And let me be specific… and I know that I'm going to step on some toes here. We believe in racial reconciliation that is Gospel centric – “Jesus is our peace… who has made us one and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility.” Ephesians 2. The Bible doesn't teach a racial reconciliation that further classifies and categorizes. One that has no basis of confessing or forgiving, nor unity and peace. Furthermore, justice in the Bible is a justice that centers on declaring Christ alone, that flows from hearts ministering in the name of Jesus …not a justice that is disconnected from the ministry of Christ, whose only goal is social wellness. Yet the church today has capitulated to these secular movements. Has aligned with worldly partners like Assyria. Movements that have no belief in the God of the Bible nor any sense of a need for reconciliation to Him. Just like Assyria that turned on Judah, so when we, when the church enters into partnerships with groups and insititutions that deny the truth, make no mistake… those organizations will turn on us, on the church, seeking to destroy her witness and consume her people…. just like Assyria turned on Judah. This is not new. This is the temptation of the church over the centuries. And of course, the other temptation here is to deny the sign. To ignore God's promise. Just like Ahaz didn't even want a sign… so the church has even ignored the sign. What sign is that? “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son.” The most amazing sign! A miracle of miracles. Yet, now and in the past, that very promise is denied. “It's not possible. A virgin. Come, on. Let's be intellectually honest.” They say. Well, Who is your God? Is he not the God of the universe? The creator of all things? Is he so small in your eyes that he cannot intervene into the very created order that he crafted? He formed every atom and molecule and cell. It's not a matter of possibility. If God is God, he can do it. A virgin can give birth. Jesus himself said, “what is impossible with man is possible with God.” No, it's a matter of belief. Ahaz didn't believe. Didn't want a sign. Despite the chaos all around him. In his sin, he rejected God and God's prophecy. but will you believe? The promised messiahWell this is the mess that was happening when this well-known prophecy was uttered. War, evil, sin, and judgment. But do you see how amazing this promise is because of it? Despite Ahaz's unholy alignment and false worship, despite even his rejection of a sign… yet God gives him, gives Judah a sign anyway. Despite Ahaz's hypocrisy, God remembers his remnant and promises great mercy… the promise of a messiah, a savior.I guess what I'm saying is this: The promise of Jesus in these verses… is not sugar-coated with Hot apple cider, eggnog, colored lights, and feel good songs… Rather, its reality. Threats and evil… temptation and judgment. But these realities, they don't diminish the prophecy… no. they accentuate it. The sign of Immanuel, of Jesus, is given with God's judgment on Ahaz! And the sign is not just verse 14. In verse 16, we see that the sign includes that Ephriam and Syria will be destroyed... those 2 kingdoms that Ahaz fears. Look at the end of the verse… “the land of whose 2 kings you dread will be deserted.” God's mercy in the midst of conflict and sin, evil and judgment. Now, before we move on, let me briefly comment about how prophecy works in the Bible. In most cases, prophecy has an immediate fulfillment followed by a future or spiritual fulfillment. Well, in the next chapter of Isaiah, Isaiah has a son. God tells Isaiah to give him this long name… Maher-shalal-hash-baz. You know, it's long name like that children's story. “ricki ticki tembo no sarembo sorry barry ruchy pip berry pembo.” Some of you will know that. Well, Maher-shalal-hash-baz means… “making speed to the spoil; he hastens to the prey” This boy's name alludes to our text, verses 15 and 16. Before the boy was able to say “mommy” and “daddy.” Assyria destroyed both Ephraim and Syria. And so, part of this prophecy has been fulfilled. But what about verse 14? What about the sign of the virgin and of Immanuel? Some have speculated various answers to the immediate fulfillment. But none of them fulfills this amazing prophecy. No, Jesus is the first and ultimate fulfillment. This promise is the hope of Christ. And as verse 14 says, we are to “Behold” it. That denotes the greatness of the coming sign. Then it says, “the virgin will conceive” An amazing miraculous prophecy as we've considered. It goes on… “and shall call his name Immanuel.” In Matthew chapter 1, which we read earlier in our service. Matthew quotes this verse in Isaiah 7. He declares that Jesus has fulfilled this prophecy. He is the sign. They called him Jesus, which means deliverer and savior, because he was Immanuel. Matthew even translates for us what Immanuel means “God with us.”What a tremendous promise for Judah which has now been fulfilled in Jesus. That God himself will come to them. Even though Ahaz rejected God, even though Judah will be judged. God promised Immanuel, himself. And Christ has come. He's come to them and he's come to us. O Come, O Come Emmanuel.Let's spend a few minutes considering why Jesus is “Immanuel…”Jesus is Immanuel because of his eternal nature as God. “God with us” He's sent from the father… and as he, himself said, “I and the father are one.” Jesus is in every way eternally God. He possesses the same glory and power as God the Father and as God the Holy Spirit.Jesus is Immanuel because God has become man. “God with us” Colossians 2:9 says... “For in Him the whole deity of God dwells bodily.” He became flesh and dwelt among us. He was born of a virgin. “Incarnate” is the word we use. It means God became man. Born as a baby. He is fully man, body and soul.Jesus is Immanuel because he is with us. When Jesus was born, God presence was with us. He understands our weakness, knows our temptations. He's able to comfort his people in any circumstance because of his presence. Jesus is the fulfillment of Psalm 46 … God is “our ever present help in time of trouble.” God has always been with his people, but with Jesus, God's presence entered into to time and space… He became with us in the flesh. And because he is with us, understands us and we need not fear… as Psalm 46 goes on “though the earth give way, though the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”And Jesus promises he'll always be with us. In Matthew 28 before Jesus ascended to heaven, he said, “surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.” We've seen that theme in our study of Acts. Jesus' continued presence with his people through His Spirt. And let me say this, there is no other religion in the world where God himself is personal, knows his creatures because he took on their very nature, God with us. And as Immanuel, Jesus is able to save. He's the only savior because he is Immanuel. Able to offer his life for us, as one of us, but with the full nature of God.For the remnant of God's people in Judah… this prophecy is the perfect sign for them, the perfect hope for them. God's presence with them… the perfect savior. This sign is greater than any sign that Ahaz could have asked for, if he believed. Because it is the sign of Jesus, the messiah, the Christ, Immanuel. Judah was vulnerable with a godless king on the throne… and a prophecy of judgment looming over their head. Yet, even with Ahaz's sin and God's judgment, with war and destruction all around them, those who believed in God could rest in the coming Immanuel. And this sign of the virgin and Immanuel… it's a sign for us. …giving comfort to us. With all the turmoil of 2020, sickness and conflict and fear… we have Immanuel, God with us, and he is Jesus. There is no other hope or salvation apart from him…, who was born of the virgin mary, he did suffer unto death, but as Immanuel, he rose and is ever present with us.So, where do you turn for deliverance? Will you be like Ahaz, turning to the world for help, ignoring God and his sign. Will you acquiesce to the temptation and threats... seeking to be rescued by false promises, false beliefs, seeking any other way to be saved than by faith in the God who alone can save.Or will you look to God's promise through Isaiah… and stand up for truth, and believe in His promises. And look to the one who was born of a virgin, who is Immanuel. Do not put your faith in anything else, but Christ alone… and the sign that God gave to Judah… will be the sign for you, too. The sign of Immanuel – of Jesus. He is the one true deliverer from sin and evil and judgment. Believe in the promise.

But my Lord says, Because  these people approach me with the mouth and pay me homage with their lips, while their heart remains far from me--their piety toward me consisting of commandments of men learned by rote--therefore it is that I shall again astound these people with wonder upon wonder, rendering void the knowledge of their sages and the intelligence of their wise men insignificant. (Isaiah 29:13-14) Moroni 8: 23-24 But it is mockery before God, denying the mercies of Christ, and the power of his Holy Spirit, and putting trust in dead works. Behold, my son, this thing ought not to be; for repentance is unto them that are under condemnation and under the curse of a broken law. -----> This is our day. It is time to come out from under condemnation, out from the curse of a broken law or group covenant. The Lord is beginning to render void the knowledge(consisting of the commandments of men, learned by the traditions of fathers and taught as doctrine) of leaders and scholars among the LDS, and working through small and simple means to bring to pass greater things! written by The Admin on the Face Book Group LDS Remnant.
