The October 7th attacks of Hamas on Israel were an unprecedented, surprise incursion by land, sea, and air that stunned the world and prompted Israel to declare war. The attacks, which included massacres in Israeli communities and a music festival, resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and the capture of some 251 hostages. This deadly terrorist attack was years in the making, but the underlying conflict goes back much further. It starts with the 1948 formation of Israel and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the wars that began there, an event known to Palestinians as the Nakba (Arabic for "catastrophe"). But the roots of the conflict extend even further—to Ottoman-era conflict between Jewish and Arab residents, the Bar Kokhba revolts in the 2nd century AD, and battles between ancient Israel and its enemies, tracing back all the way to the Iron Age wars between Israelites and the Philistines. The October 7 attack is seen by some as an echo of the cyclical theme of persecution and existential threat against the Jewish people chronicled in the Old Testament, recalling narratives like the Exodus and attacks on ancient Israel. The modern conflict specifically originates in the same coastal region once controlled by the Philistines—an ancient people who lived on the southern coast of Canaan from the 12th century BC until their demise in the 7th century BC. Furthermore, the Bar Kokhba revolt (132–135 AD) was the third and final major Jewish-Roman war, resulting in a devastating defeat for the Jewish population of Judea and leading to the Roman renaming of the province to Syria Palaestina. We can’t ignore evil—but we don’t have to fear it. God never forgets His people, even when the world feels dark. In this episode of How to Study the Bible, Nicole Unice unpacks Daniel 8—a vision set “in the third year of King Belshazzar”—featuring a ram (Medo-Persia), a goat (Greece under Alexander the Great), and a “little horn” that foreshadows vicious oppression against God’s people and ultimately prefigures end-times opposition. Nicole shows how Scripture itself interprets the symbols, why this prophecy likely emboldened Daniel in later chapters, and how the vision’s weight moved Daniel to both ponder and then “go about the king’s business.” This chapter becomes a practical call: if we truly grasp God’s sovereignty and the sweep of history, how should we live right now—especially toward the “least of these”? He fought an extremely rare form of cancer bravely, but in the end, his heart couldn't keep up the fight anymore. He went fast with no prolonged suffering. We want to thank all of you who have kept him in prayer. Please know that those prayers were not in vain. Our son lives with Jesus now.We are now updating this campaign to reflect our financial need for his remaining hospital bills, funeral expenses, and housing for our family. For those who don't already know, we have had to evacuate our home due to a very serious mold issue. It was caused by a pipe bursting last November; our renters sent out a team to fix it, but apparently they did not do it properly and when the warm weather came earlier this year, the mold started to grow. This is what the mold report found out. It is now unlivable. Because of this, our entire family has had to live in Airbnbs for the last several weeks. We are essentially homeless. On top of that, our renters informed us that they will continue charging us rent until we can move all of our things out. Because of the mold, we have had to throw away a lot of our things, such as beds, furniture, clothes, and anything else the mold has ruined. House rent, Airbnb rentals, hospital bills, funeral expenses, many new household items, clothes, and everything else we need to keep our family of us and our four remaining children is, as you can imagine, piling on quite a bit. As most men, I do not enjoy asking for help. However, as most fathers and husbands can relate to, there isn't anything I won't do for my family. In light of that, I wanted to first ask all of you to pray for us.
