We're at the "elected local officials could be jailed for their votes" portion of the slow-roll to full-on MAGA authoritarianism in the United States. Fulton County Democrats are refusing to seat two election denier Republican nominees to its election board, with the county and state GOP now seeking legal recourse which could include fines and jail time for commissioners who keep voting to refuse seating those nominees. They're not refusing to seat Republicans, period; just these two, particular (as Fair Fight calls them) 'conspiracy theorists.' Joining me to discuss are Fulton County district three commissioner Dana Barrett - who's seeking to unseat commission chair Rob Pitts - and Fair Fight's Max Flugrath. Max and I further discuss Fair Fight's activism for voters being disenfranchised by mass voter purges occurring right now; purges that disproportionately affect voters of color. ------In Florida, that state's transportation department cowering to Trump transportation secretary Sean Duffy's anti-gay, anti-woke screed to whitewash rainbow crosswalks and other street messaging from America's roads, took all the color out of the Pulse Nightclub crosswalk memorial.Because the cruelty is the point. It isn't speaking to "all lives matter," for sure.

Saying no isn't weakness—it's wisdom. In this solo episode, I open up about the spiritual strength it takes to say no to the things that no longer align with your purpose, your peace, and your healing. From people to patterns, from opportunities to old emotions—sometimes we have to say no to anger, no to guilt, no to depression in order to create sacred space for joy, peace, and divine alignment. If you've been afraid to walk away or to clear the clutter in your spirit, this episode is your reminder: you're allowed to change.
In this episode of Queer News, Anna breaks down one of the most significant legal wins for trans rights this year—a federal judge blocking Trump's ban on gender-affirming care for incarcerated trans folks. We remember Laura Schueler, a beloved Black trans woman murdered in Cincinnati, and we honor the 49 lives lost at Pulse Nightclub nine years ago. Plus, we celebrate the power of protest and performance: four drag queens crashing Trump's Kennedy Center return with defiance and dignity. Contributor Benjamin Coy takes us to the Native Son Gala, a night honoring the brilliance of Black gay and queer men. From the courts to the stage, from mourning to marching—this episode reminds us that resistance takes many forms and our stories will not be erased.

https://youtu.be/kAhzQRcJX20 …[W]e now have the first complete data set of all suicide terrorist attacks around the world from 1980 to 2009,…research on who becomes a suicide terrorist showed that virtually none could be diagnosed as mentally ill, while many were religious and, most striking, nearly all emerged from communities resisting foreign military occupation…. From 1980 to 2003, there were 345 completed suicide terrorist attacks by 524 suicide terrorists who actually killed themselves on a mission to kill others, half of whom are secular. The world leader was the Tamil Tigers (a secular, Hindu group) who carried out more attacks than Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) during this period. Further, at least a third of the suicide attacks in predominantly Muslim countries were carried out by secular terrorist groups, such as the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in Turkey. Instead of religion, what over 95% of all suicide terrorist attacks before 2004 had in common was a strategic goal: to compel a democratic state to withdraw combat forces that are threatening territory that the terrorists' prize. From Lebanon to Sri Lanka to the West Bank to Chechnya, the central goal of every suicide terrorist campaign has been to resist military occupation by a democracy…. It was the Hindu, avowedly antireligious Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka, whose 157 suicide terrorists totaled more than Hamas and all other Palestinian suicide groups combined. Of the Palestinian suicide terrorists, more than a third were from secular groups, such as the Al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigade and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Of the suicide terrorists associated with Hezbollah in Lebanon during the 1980s, only 21% were Islamic fundamentalists while 71% were communists and socialists; 8% were Christians. In Turkey, 100% of the PKK's suicide attackers were secular. Overall, Islamic fundamentalism cannot account for over half of the known affiliations of the 524 total suicide terrorists from 1980 to 2003—184 were from Islamic fundamentalist groups (35% comprising 73 Al Qaeda, 5 Lebanese, 5 Kashmiri Rebels, 69 Hamas, 34 Palestinian Islamic Jihad) and 236 from secular groups (45% comprising 157 Tamil Tigers, 42 Al-Aqsa, 22 Lebanese, 15 PKK), while 12 (21%) had unknown ideological affiliations…. Further, notice that there are no suicide attackers from Iran—one of the largest Islamic fundamentalist populations in the world, with a population greater than Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, and Syria combined. – Robert Pape and James K. This week on Everything You Didn't Know About Herbalism, we are sharing an awakening conversation surrounding the intersection of herbalism and grief with the author, educator, non-profit leader, and environmental advocate, Emily Ruff. Driven by her profound dedication and compassion, Emily sits down with us to dissect the individual and collective impact that environmental grief has on our communities, and how redefining its influence may play a key role in re-establishing a symbiotic relationship with our planet. We'll explore how this can be accomplished by leaning on our plant allies in times of loss, which will not only provide us with the medicinal value of a botanical but also strengthen our gratitude for the gifts nature provides us. In turn, this strengthened connection allows us to join the planet on its journey toward healing, hand-in-hand. In Emily's words, "Working with herbs for grief does not erase the causes of grief or the need for us to continue working towards collective liberation and justice, but hopefully, it gives us more fortitude and resilience to be able to do that."
In this episode the Pride of Louisville, Kentucky, JP Davis, offers to support Kristi's non-profits K9s4COPS and K9s4KIDS, which deploy canines and their handlers to protect schoolchildren, hunt down narcotics and dealers, and combat crime across the US. We discuss how law enforcement dogs could help in the horrific school shootings across the country. They already provide protection for thousands of school children every day, and enhance the school communities in which they serve by safeguarding both the mental and physical welfare of the children. The Caylee Anthony Case The story of Casey Anthony and her daughter Caylee has captivated the nation since the toddler was first reported missing in July 2008. The saga began on July 15, 2008, when Cindy Anthony, Casey's mother, reported to the police that her 2-year-old granddaughter, Caylee, had been missing for a month. This phone call set off a painstaking search for the toddler and an intense investigation into her then-22-year-old mother, Casey. Investigations into Casey's cell phone, computer, and vehicle revealed internet searches for chloroform and neck-breaking, as well as traces of chloroform and human decomposition in her car trunk. Consequently, Casey was charged with first-degree murder in October 2008. Two months later, Caylee's skeletal remains were found in a wooded area near the Anthony family home in Florida. Throughout her 2011 trial and since her controversial acquittal, Casey has maintained her innocence, offering inconsistent explanations for Caylee's death. Initially, she claimed a babysitter kidnapped Caylee, later stating that Caylee accidentally drowned in the family pool. In the 2022 Peacock documentary “Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies,” she accused her father, George Anthony, of staging Caylee's drowning to cover up his alleged sexual abuse of her. The Pulse Nightclub Shooting On June 12, 2016, 29-year-old Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people and wounded 53 others at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, before being fatally shot by Orlando Police officers after a three-hour standoff. In a 9-1-1 call shortly after the shooting began, Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and cited the U.S. killing of Abu Waheeb in Iraq as the trigger for his actions. He later told a negotiator that his actions were motivated by American-led interventions in Iraq and Syria. The FBI deemed the incident a terrorist attack. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, MeWe, Pinterest and other social media platforms. Pulse was hosting a "Latin Night," and most victims were Latino. The shooting was the deadliest terrorist attack in the U.S. since the September 11 attacks and the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history until the 2017 Las Vegas shooting. Around 320 people were inside the club when Mateen began shooting at 2:02 a.m., killing and injuring dozens. CSI on Notorious Murders: Caylee Anthony and Pulse Nightclub Shooting - Special Episode. Today, June 12, we commemorate the eighth anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub massacre. We look back at that horrific day in episode #590 of The ANEZ SEZ podcast...
On June 12, 2016, life changed for Brandon Wolf. He crouched in a bathroom while a gunman opened fire at Orlando's Pulse Nightclub, killing his best friends, Drew Leinonen & Juan Guerrero, and 47 others. Rather than be swallowed by the anger and fear of tragedy, Brandon set out to honor the victims' legacies with action. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Brandon co-founded The Dru Project, a nonprofit organization that works to empower youth and provide future leaders in the LGBTQ community funding for higher education. To date, the organization has given over $150,000 in college scholarships to rising leaders. He also became an outspoken activist in the gun violence prevention movement, partnering with March For Our Lives, Everytown, Giffords, and others to demand legislative solutions to the epidemic. In 2019, he became the first survivor of the tragedy at Pulse Nightclub to testify before Congress.Today, Brandon is a nationally-recognized gun safety and LGBTQ civil rights advocate and dynamic public speaker. He currently serves as National Press Secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organization. He is the author of the memoir, "A Place for Us."Thanks for listening! Last month marked the one-year anniversary of a mass shooting at the “Club Q,” a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs. The shooter, who killed five people and wounded 19 others, received multiple life sentences in June for his crimes, as well an additional sentence for “bias-motivated” crimes. This seemed to confirm the popular narrative that the shooter targeted the LGBTQ community out of hate. That narrative was quickly and deliberately spread almost immediately after the shooting. In fact, just days after, The New York Times not-so-subtly suggested a connection between the murders and several conservative Christian ministries headquartered in Colorado Springs, including Focus on the Family. Other media outlets and voices were not as subtle in leveling that accusation. Days later, vandals spray-painted the words “their blood is on your hands” on the entrance to Focus on the Family. The Club Q shooting was a horrible act of evil. Every one of the victims were made in the image and likeness of God and bore the inherent dignity and value that means. Not one deserved to be reduced to their sexual identity, not by the man who committed these crimes and not by those who would use the victims as pawns to push a false narrative. In this case, the narrative is a fable that goes back at least as far as the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming. Almost immediately after the teenager was brutally killed outside of town, his murder was framed in both national and international media as a clear, cut-and-dried hate crime. In 2009, Congress passed the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Last year in her dissenting opinion in the 303 Creative case, in which the Supreme Court upheld a Colorado web designer's right to free expression, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that Shepard's murder was the result of a “social system of discrimination” that “created an environment in which LGBT people were unsafe.” In fact, just last week, a memorial service was held for Matthew Shepard at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., where his ashes are interred. The real story of Matthew Shepard, however, is anything but clear and cut-and-dried. In 2014, after more than a decade of researching the incident, a gay journalist named Stephen Jimenez released a book that revealed Shepard's long history of drug use. He had, in fact, been selling crystal meth at the time of his murder. He'd also engaged in prostitution and had a sexual relationship with at least one of the men who killed him. The police who intercepted the killers shortly after they fled the scene believed they were heading to Shepard's house to search for drug money. In other words, this murder was not a hate crime. It likely had nothing to do with Shepherd's sexuality. Many of the tragedies that have been made part of this narrative have similarly inconvenient details. For example, the convicted shooter in the Club Q massacre last year identified himself in court as “nonbinary” and had visited the nightclub multiple times. Though he posted anti-gay slurs online, he seemed quite fascinated with the Christchurch, New Zealand, shooter who targeted religious communities. He also came from an abusive background and exhibited significant signs of mental illness. Justice Sotomayor also mentioned the 2016 shooting at Orlando's Pulse Nightclub in her dissenting opinion in 303 Creative. The shooter, who killed 49 people, was a Muslim man who claimed “solidarity” with Al-Qaeda and ISIS. His wife testified that his original plan to attack Disney World was abandoned because of the police presence at the amusement park. It's not clear that the shooter was even aware that the Pulse was a gay club. Nevertheless, that shooting is now cemented in cultural memory as a hate crime against gays. While there is little evidence that “anti-LGBTQ hatred” has led to many mass shootings, there is more evidence that suggests the opposite. The shooter at Covenant School in Nashville, for example, identified as transgender and seems to have targeted the Christian school on purpose. In August 2012, an LGBTQ activist stormed the headquarters of the Family Research Council with a gun and a Chick-fil-A bag and yelled “I don't like your politics” before shooting a security guard. At least two other mass shooters identified as trans or non-binary, though it is not clear that their identity motivated their actions. The problem isn't just that re-writing history is wrong, or that it often misplaces blame on some people while excusing others. It's that the myth hurts everyone, including those it's supposedly trying to protect, by ignoring the problems ailing the LGBTQ community. For example, members of this community have disproportionately high rates of substance abuse, childhood sexual abuse, mental illness, family breakdown, violence, and deaths of despair. Suffering people need help. Conditioning them to be afraid of a nonexistent threat or to view their suffering as only someone else's fault is cruel. These are hard truths indeed, but hard truths are more loving than false narratives. For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.
In this unique episode, I had the chance to interview two of my friends live at the Brothers Helping Brothers Conference in Ohio. Both were impacted by the attack at the Pulse Nightclub in different ways. Jeff had created the Orlando Firefighters' Peer Support team a few short years prior to the event. Raul was one of the SWAT officers that ultimately neutralized the assailant. We discuss their early lives and journeys into the first responder professions, mental health, active shooter training, the gensis of the Peer Support team, SWAT training, Raul's powerful story from the incident, the aftermath and so much more.
