Before there was Barack Obama on the ballot, there was Jesse Jackson. Preacher, civil rights soldier and activist, Jackson ran two memorable campaigns for the American presidency. “Our time has come,” Jackson declared during his famous ‘David and Goliath' speech while he was running for the Democratic nomination in 1984. “Red, yellow, black and white, we're all precious in God's sight! Our time has come.” But what ingredients create a civil rights legend? Join biographer Barbara Ann Reynolds, long-time friend and collaborator Frank Watkins and Jackson's son, Jonathan Jackson, in conversation with host Brandon Pope. They dissect Jackson's decades-long career – as a mentee of Martin Luther King Jr., as the leader of Rainbow PUSH and as a renowned orator – on the latest episode of Making.
Do you feel like you're not being heard? Like your efforts to create change falling on deaf ears? If you're ready to learn how to be an effective advocate for civil rights, then this episode is for you. You'll learn about the Rainbow Push Intergenerational Training Program though it occurred over half a century ago, the civil rights movement is still relevant today. "The church gives to the people, not to the administration." - Bishop Tavis Grant Bishop Tavis Grant is the acting national director of Rainbow Push. He has been involved with the civil rights movement for over 50 years and has seen the evolution of the most iconic figure of his lifetime, Reverend Jesse Jackson. This is Bishop Tavis Grant's story... I was recently appointed to the acting position of national director of Rainbow Push, an organization founded by Reverend Jesse Jackson. I stated that civil rights are a continuum of an ever-evolving movement. I also brought up how the owner of the Phoenix Suns and the Mercury WNBA team was fined and suspended for using racial slurs. I believe that the civil rights movement and civil rights were fought for the right to coexist, not to be accepted. And that we have sacrificed a lot of civil rights gains for the euphoria of being accepted. We then began talking about the black church and how it is understaffed, underfunded, and has antiquated resources. I stated that the church gives to the people, not to the administration. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. What is the legacy of Reverend Jesse Jackson? 2. How did the Black church respond to reality TV shows that mocked them? 3. What are Bishop Tavis Grant's thoughts on America's political future? Here's a little-known story that people don't know about what happened in Georgia. Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger's no hero. He thought that he had disqualified enough votes to give Trump the win, because they disqualified so many. But what they didn't expect was groups like Rainbow PUSH, Black Voters Matter Fund, and the Transformative Justice Coalition, who manned phone banks. When a ballot is disqualified in Georgia, you have the right as a voter to go in and “cure” it — fix it. So if you used a red pen, you refill out the ballot in black. If you signed your signature in a different way than when you registered or on your driver's license, you can re-sign it. And these groups literally got tens of thousands of people to go into County Clerk's offices and fix their ballots — which Raffensperger has told me he wasn't expecting. He was dead shocked. It wasn't the Democratic party that did this. The Democratic party sat on its hands. But the activists went out and got thousands and thousands of voters to go back to the County Clerk's office and fix their ballots. And that's what put Biden over the top, and ultimately put Ossoff and Warnock in the Senate, because of this tremendous grassroots effort. Raffensperger thought that he had beaten them, but he wasn't going to go to jail for Trump. That's where Raffensperger drew the line. That doesn't make him a hero. It makes him a co-conspirator who got cold feet and jumped out of the getaway car. ➡️ @RickSmithShow

The two companies follow efforts by Google to improve its political ad transparency. The Internet Association is urging the Federal Election Commission to keep political ad regulations flexible. Homeland detected surveillance activity near “sensitive facilities” The Department of Homeland security reported suspicious surveillance activity near what it termed as “sensitive facilities”. In a letter to Senator Ron Wyden, Senior Homeland Security Official Chris Krebs wrote that the Department detected an “anomalous” use of Stingray devices—a device that law enforcement officers use to mimic cell towers in order to obtain device data. The problem is that Homeland doesn’t know or isn’t disclosing where the suspicious activity is coming from. Founder of NABFEME, the National Association of Black Female Executives in Music & Entertainment, Inc., and creator of the Women Who Jam! an all female artistic movement, Johnnie Walker holds the distinction of being named the first female Sr. Vice President of Promotion for the Island Def Jam Music Group and the only female to ever hold that position for the company. In 2005, Walker was honored with the Woman of Conscience Award from Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rainbow/PUSH. Ms Walker also received Delta Sigma Theta’s 2006 Osceola Award, the highest honor given to professionals in the arts. In 2009 Women’s eNews named Walker as one of New York's 21 Leaders for the 21st Century. In 2010, Memphis newspaper, the Tri State Defender, named Johnnie Walker a “Woman of Excellence.” Walker’s career began as a country music radio personality. She later segued to a Black music radio opportunity in Memphis, TN at KRNB. In 1989, Johnnie Walker's marketing zeal brought her to the attention of Russell Simmons at Def Jam Recordings, where he wooed her from a career in radio broadcasting to become one of the label’s regional marketing reps. Within one year she was promoted from Regional Promotions Manager, to National Director of Promotion. The Sr. National Director position soon followed and positioned Johnnie to be instrumental in launching the careers of Redman, Method Man, Onyx, Montell Jordan and Foxy Brown! In 1997, Johnnie continued her "WIN" philosophy with a move to New York City where she assumed the position of Vice President of Promotion for Def Jam Recordings, Inc. Two years later, she restructured the company’s promotions department, created their much sought after “R&B Radio Promotions Guide,” and hired the company’s first national promotions field staff. This was most significant because the staff was primarily comprised of young, inexperienced field reps that Johnnie molded into a "winning force." Together, this force successfully marketed the Def Comedy Jam, Phat Farm clothing and Russell Simmons' co-produced movies, "The Nutty Professor,” Jackie Chan’s “Rush Hour 1 and 2” plus several #1 Gold and Platinum albums from Public Enemy, Jay-Z, Sisqo, Kelly Price, Ashanti, Ja Rule, DMX, LL Cool J, Musiq Soulchild, Dru Hill and others. In 2004 after 15 years of tenure at Def Jam Recordings, Johnnie Walker moved to Los Angeles, CA and accepted the position of Head of Black Music for DreamWorks Records, handling the musical careers of The Isley Brothers, Floetry, Burt Bacharach, Jon B and many others. “Supplier Diversity: Driving Shared Commitment in a Competitive Environment”The automotive environment has changed dramatically within the past two years. Competition is fierce and expectations have increased for both companies with supplier diversity programs and automotive suppliers. Our shrinking group of 875 minority auto suppliers create and deliver everything from automotive parts, to packaging and shipping, to staffing and executive recruitment. Their contributions to African American communities are in the millions through jobs, education and economic development. These suppliers primarily are located in urban and empowerment areas and have a tendency to hire, 70% of the time, within their own community. Diverse suppliers are losing exponentially with the recent automotive restructuring. Are companies still committed to supplier diversity programs? Are minority businesses stepping up to the challenges?Panelists: o Panel moderator: Dr. Melvin Gravely, II, Ph.D. o Bob Socia, VP, Purchasing & Supply Chain GM o Robert Young, VP, TEMA Toyota o Tom Lake,VP of Purchasing, Honda Contributing spokespersons Burt Jordan, Exec.
