What's at stake when nonprofits and democracy are under attack? How can organizations respond effectively to threats against their tax status and Constitutional rights? In this illuminating conversation, Rusty speaks with Mike Zamore, National Director of Policy and Government Affairs at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), about the unprecedented challenges facing nonprofits in today's political climate.Mike Zamore draws from his 22 years of Capitol Hill experience and current ACLU leadership to explain how nonprofits are essential to America's constitutional framework of checks and balances. He details recent fights against attempts to weaponize government power against nonprofits, including legislation that would have allowed stripping organizations of tax-exempt status without due process. The conversation highlights parallels between threats to individual liberties and threats to nonprofit First Amendment freedoms. The discussion concludes with practical advice for nonprofits in red states and red districts to effectively engage with Republican representatives regarding the upcoming tax reconciliation bill that could adversely affect the sector. Zamore emphasizes the importance of solidarity, encouraging nonprofits to stand together against intimidation tactics, and that reminding us that maintaining collective courage is crucial for preserving both Constitutional rights and the ability to serve communities. This episode was recorded the morning of May 9, 2025, before the House Ways and Means Committee revealed the language in their portion of the proposed tax bill, which includes re-introduction of H.R. 9495. In case you missed it, the government has just approved the sale of a majority stake in Royal Mail to Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky's EP Group. This means that one of the UK's most historic institutions will now be predominantly owned by a foreign national. Many were surprised by this news, with some mistakenly believing this marks the start of Royal Mail's privatisation. However, the truth is that this process began years ago.A Brief History of PrivatisationRoyal Mail was privatised in stages between 2013 and 2015, spearheaded by Vince Cable and the Liberal Democrats during the coalition government. It's worth noting that the Lib Dems, often perceived as a moderate or progressive party, lean quite heavily towards free-market economics, similar to the Conservatives. This sale was a continuation of their economic philosophy, and now we're seeing the consequences of that decision unfold. The recent government deliberations weren't about whether Royal Mail should be privatised—they consider that ship as long since sailed—but whether foreign companies or individuals should be allowed to own what remains a vital part of the UK's infrastructure. The Problem with Privatising a Natural MonopolyRoyal Mail is what economists refer to as a “natural monopoly.” Simply put, it's nearly impossible for another company to replicate its reach and infrastructure, especially when it comes to letters. While parcels are a more competitive market, the universal postal service—a commitment to deliver letters anywhere in the UK for the same price—is a unique obligation. The government has ensured that this universal service requirement will remain for at least five years under the new ownership. But after that? Who knows?I want to be very clear about what I believe about this and similar sell-offs: vital infrastructure like Royal Mail, healthcare, and public transport should not be privately owned. The argument that privatisation makes services more efficient simply doesn't hold up. Has Royal Mail become better since it was privatised in 2013? Has it become cheaper? The answer to both questions is a resounding “no.” By every objective measure, the service has deteriorated.Infrastructure Shouldn't Be About ProfitNatural monopolies like Royal Mail should exist to serve the public, not to generate profit. Expecting services that are essential to daily life to turn a profit is nonsensical. Do we expect pavements in our towns or schools to be profitable? No, because they're fundamental to a functioning society. I say ‘we' because I think this is what the vast majority of the public believe, but unfortunately we are seeing this push form all the big parties for schools to be ‘profitable' via ‘academisation'. It shows how dangerous this thinking is - it can lead to real problems, where everything is about money rather than public good.Royal Mail plays a critical role in the economy, enabling businesses to send letters and parcels at a consistent cost, regardless of the recipient's location. Without this universal pricing, businesses would face chaos—imagine having to get a bespoke quote for every letter you wanted to send! This consistency is something a private company, driven by the need for profit, struggles to maintain. It's not commercially viable to offer uniform pricing for deliveries to both central London and remote parts of Scotland, but it is vital for the country as a whole.Labour's Missed OpportunityYou might think that a Labour government, theoretically more sympathetic to public ownership, would have stepped in to address this. But today's Labour isn't the party of the 1970s; it's not committed to left-wing policies in the way many assume and hope for. In fact, the decision to allow this sale reflects a broader ideological consensus across most of the political spectrum: an embrace of privatisation and market forces, even for services that should remain public. This isn't a problem exclusive to the Conservatives or Reform. The Liberal Democrats initiated the privatisation, and Labour, despite being nominally on the left, hasn't challenged the broader trend.A Green Party PerspectiveThe Green Party remains one of the few political voices advocating for public ownership of vital services. Whether it's water, transport, or the postal service, the Greens argue that these essential elements of our infrastructure should be run for the public, not for profit. As a Green, I've been saying this for years: the UK needs to rethink its approach to public services. Universal services like Royal Mail aren't just businesses—they're the backbone of our society. Allowing them to be sold off to the highest bidder, whether they're British or foreign, erodes that foundation. The Future of Royal MailSo, where does this leave us? For the next five years, the universal service obligation will remain. But after that, there are no guarantees. Will we still be able to post a letter for the same price to anywhere in the UK? It seems unlikely.Royal Mail's infrastructure is unmatched, and no competitor is likely to replicate it, particularly for letters. The further we drift towards a fully privatised, profit-driven model, the more we risk losing the basic, dependable service we've taken for granted. What Can Be Done?If you're frustrated by this, the solution is simple: stop voting tactically. Vote for what you believe in. Vote for what this country truly needs. Poll after poll shows that a large majority of the public believe that public services should be publicly owned and yet they often fail to connect that with how they vote. The Greens are one of the few parties standing firm on the principle that public services should be run by the public, for the public. The sale of Royal Mail is just one example of how we're chipping away at the fabric of our society. Bit by bit, vital services are being handed over to private interests, often to the detriment of the public. This ideology isn't about efficiency—it's about profit. And it's an ideology shared by parties across the political spectrum. If we want to see real change, we need to demand it—from all parties, not just one. This is a public episode. OA1080 - As a weary nation watches the world's richest man try to buy a federal election in plain sight, we stop to consider the question which has so long plagued Elon Musk: There's gotta be a crime here, right? Somewhere? There has been plenty of debate this week about the legality of Musk's $1 million daily lottery for registered US voters in swing states, but there is something far more insidious going on in this story beyond the headlines. Matt explains how the Federal Elections Commission has recently taken the Supreme Court's perfectly good joke way too far before we consider what the rapidly evolving rules around super PACs could mean for the future of fair elections in the United States. Finally, we drop a seasonal footnote to discuss how some Massachusetts 8th graders recently helped to close out a 332-year-old criminal case. “Judge Aileen Cannon, who tossed Trump's classified docs case, on list of proposed candidates for attorney general” ABC News (10/22/2024) “Elon Musk's Big Business and Conflicts of Interest With the U.S. Government” The New York Times (10/20/2024) “A Democrat, Siding With the G.O.P., Is Removing Limits on Political Cash at ‘Breathtaking' Speed,” Shane Goldmacher The New York Times (6/10/2024) The Illusion of Independence: How Unregulated Coordination is Undermining Our Democracy, and What Can Be Done to Stop It, The Campaign Legal Center (11/30/2023) FEC Advisory Opinion 2024-01 (3/20/2024) FEC Vice Chair Ellen Weintraub's dissent from Advisory Opinion 2024-07 (addressing Lindsay Graham campaign's question re: super PAC campaign fundraising coordination) Check out the OA Linktree for all the places to go and things to do! How did higher education come to be dominated by academics on the ideological left, and what are the potential consequences of this monoculture on diverse fields such as literature and engineering? What's the mechanism behind this shift, and where did it originate?John Ellis is Chairman of the Board of the California Association of Scholars, a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the author of several books. His most recent work is titled, The Breakdown of Higher Education: How It Happened, the Damage It Does, and What Can Be Done.John and Greg discuss the transformative changes happening in higher education. John questions the sustainability of the ideological shift towards political correctness and identity politics within humanities departments. Together they examine the impact of the marginalization of traditional scholarly perspectives and the wider implications for society's dialogue.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:What happens when one political ideology dominates the campus1:00:01 The more you get a group of people in one room that agree with each other, the more you ban from that room any contrary opinion, the more those people will descend into stupidity because there's nothing to check them. What keeps people like you and me alive intellectually is that if we say something that has a flaw in it, someone is going to see those, spot the flaw. And in a thriving university, there are enough bright people around you, that if you say something with a weakness in it, there'll be someone who'll point it out to you, and you'll be better off. Because now, when you have a group of people that all agree with each other, that discipline, self-correction is gone. And so you'll descend into greater and greater irrationality and stupidity, and that process is still ongoing.Do universities only appoint people like themselves58:48 The universities will not change. They are, at the moment, peopled by a sect, a minority sect, a political sect that is extraordinarily tenacious and unwilling to compromise. Extraordinarily intolerant and intemperate, and they will go on appointing people like themselves. And we're still seeing the grip on this. The grip of the radical left is growing ever tighter, day by day. People don't seem to grasp this, but it is true. The idea of objectivity in sciences and engineering40:25 There is definitely an assault on the idea of objectivity in sciences and engineering. I mean, you've heard about black mathematics and so on, which is a nonsense ideal. My favorite saying is, "Only an engineer can build a bridge that will stand up. It will only just stand up. anyone can build a bridge that is overbuilt." These standards are seriously under assault now. No one quite knows how far they'll go. Certainly, there's some good work still being done in the sciences.DEI as a reflection of the values of a radical faculty56:14 The reach of the radical faculty, its grip on American academia, is extensive. It is pervasive. It is everywhere. And one of the things that I've found is very odd. What I don't understand is the fact that what was happening on one campus was replicated on almost every other campus, and yet it seemed so, you know, irrational to me, and yet the whole country, the universities in the whole country were exhibiting the same kind of directionality. And I still marvel at this. That there weren't more holdouts, but, no, the DEI is a reflection of the values of the radical faculty. In a recent conversation at the Open Source Summit in Bilbao, Spain, Gabriel Colombo, the General Manager of the Linux Foundation Europe and the Executive Director of the Fintech Open Source Foundation, discussed the potential impact of the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) on the open source community. The conversation shed light on the challenges and opportunities that the CRA presents to open source and how individuals and organizations can respond. The conversation began by addressing the Cyber Resilience Act and its significance. Gabriel Colombo explained that while the Act is being touted as a measure to bolster cybersecurity and national security, it could have unintended consequences for the open source ecosystem, particularly in Europe. The Act, currently in the legislative process, aims to address cybersecurity concerns but could inadvertently hinder open source development and collaboration.Jim Zemlin, the Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, had previously mentioned the importance of forks in open source development, emphasizing that they are a healthy aspect of the ecosystem. However, Colombo pointed out that the CRA could create a sense of unease, as it might deter people and companies from participating in open source projects or using open source software due to potential legal liabilities. To grasp the implications of the CRA, Colombo explained some of the key provisions. The initial drafts of the Act proposed potential liability for individual developers, open source foundations, and package managers. This raised concerns about the open source supply chain's potential vulnerability and the distribution of liability. As the Act evolves, the liability landscape has shifted somewhat. Individual developers may not be held liable unless they consistently receive donations from commercial companies. However, for open source foundations, especially those accepting recurring donations from commercial entities, there remains a concern about potential liabilities and the need to conform to the CRA's requirements.Colombo emphasized that this issue isn't limited to Europe. It could impact the entire global open source ecosystem and affect the ability of European developers and small to medium-sized businesses to participate effectively. The conversation highlighted the challenges open source communities face when engaging with policymakers. Open source is not structured like traditional corporations or industry consortiums, making it more challenging to present a unified front. Additionally, the legislative process can be slow and complex, which may not align with the rapid pace of technology development. The lack of proactive engagement from the European Commission and the absence of open source communities in the initial consultations on the Act are concerning. The understanding of open source, its nuances, and the role it plays in the broader software supply chain appears limited within policy-making circles. What Can Be Done?Gabriel Colombo stressed the importance of awareness and education. It is vital for individuals, businesses, and open source foundations to understand the implications of the CRA. The Linux Foundation and other organizations have launched campaigns to provide information and resources to help stakeholders comprehend the Act's potential impact.Being vocal and advocating for open source within your network, organization, and through public affairs channels can also make a difference. Engagement with policymakers, especially as the Act progresses through the legislative process, is crucial. Colombo encouraged businesses to emphasize the significance of open source in their operations and supply chains, making policymakers aware of how the CRA might affect their activities. In the face of the Cyber Resilience Act, the open source community must unite and actively engage with policymakers. It's essential to educate and raise awareness about the potential impact of the Act and advocate for a balanced approach that strengthens cybersecurity without stifling open source innovation. The Act's development is ongoing, and there is time for stakeholders to make their voices heard. With a united effort, the open source community can help shape the legislation to ensure that open source remains vibrant and resilient in the face of evolving cybersecurity challenges.Learn more from The New Stack about open source and Linux Foundation Europe:At Open Source Summit: Introducing Linux Foundation EuropeMaking Europe's 'Romantic' Open Source World More PracticalEmbracing Open Source for Greater Business Impact

What Can Be Done to Fix the Homeless Crisis?- We interview Mayor Bill Wells of the City of El Cajon about why we have a homeless problem in our State, and what can be done to address the problem. The reason for homelessness is not what most people think of, such as job loss. It has much more to do with drug and alcohol addictions, and court decisions and laws that prevent meaningful and effective interventions from taking place. What are the solutions? Can a Government be Sued for Failure to Act? We analyze a new tort claims action for $1 billion + filed by Simone Biles, and dozens of other women who were on the U.S. Olympics Gymnastics Team, against the FBI for failing to act to protect them from continuing sexual abuse by their Olympic sports team doctor, despite the fact the FBI was well aware of the ongoing abuse. We discuss the chances this action will be successful. What are the "Red Flags" of Tyranny? Is our country in danger of going the way of the once prosperous nation of Venezuela, and bowing down to tyranny? What are the signs in our culture and government that this is already happening in the United States? You should be concerned after you hear this. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is a brief presentation on a paper I presented last month at the annual conference of the North East Academy of Legal Studies in Business (NEALSB) that deals with the issue of notarial fraud and examines the training, powers and qualifications of notaries public throughout the U.S. in contrast with the vast majority of countries around the world to explain why so many foreign-born immigrants fall prey to unscrupulous notaries public that fraudulently engage in the unauthorized practice of law. What You Will Learn: Why mental health in the workplace during Covid-19 is changing, and how this is impacting individuals and teams Why the mental health impact of the pandemic is having an outsized impact on women and BIPOC, amplified by systemic disparities How the CDC released a report in early April about the impact the pandemic is having on mental health, and what crucial information that report contains How the layers of traumas we are all experiencing in trying to adapt to the realities of the pandemic are making it more difficult to navigate through our normal work life How all of the various changes in our lives are feeding each other, and why marginalized people especially feel these changes How 42% of Black, 27% of Asian, and 22% of Latinx and 19% of multiracial people have experienced an increase in race-based hostility, compared with 1% of White people How 40% of women and nonbinary people and 42% of transgender people have experienced gender-based harassment compared to only 2% of men Why more than 1/3 of respondents said that they don’t trust their employer to react fairly to harassment situations How you can help within your organization, and what strategies you can follow to make your workplace more safe and supportive for the mental health of team members Why intentionality and accountability are vital ingredients to creating positive, lasting, systemic change in your organization Mental Health in the Workplace During Covid-19 At the beginning of April, the Centers for Disease Control released a report on the impact the global pandemic has had on mental health in America, and the results probably won’t surprise you. Overall mental health is on the decline, and many people are struggling to access mental healthcare due to economic disparities, lockdowns and many other factors. Just as in the population at large, mental health in the workplace during Covid-19 is also displaying many troubling warning signs. Isolation and work/life balance struggles due to working from home, increase in anxiety and depression, and a lack of support systems are all factors. It probably also won’t surprise you to learn that people within marginalized communities are experiencing an outsized impact on mental health in the workplace during Covid-19, because disparities within our systems have an amplifying effect. While 1% of White people have reported an increase in race-based hostility during the pandemic, a staggering 40% of Black people have reported the same. For people of Asian ethnicity, that number is 27%. 22% of people in the Latinx community reported an increase in hostility, and 19% of multiethnic and multiracial people reported an increase. Gender-based harassment is also on the rise during the pandemic. 2% of men reported an increase of harassment based on gender, but 40% of women and nonbinary people and 42% of transgender people experienced harassment during the same period. That’s the bad news. The good news is that there are steps you can take in your workplace to make your organization more safe and more supportive for team members who are dealing with mental health challenges, now and in the future. What Can Be Done to Support Mental Health in the Workplace During Covid-19 Here are the steps you can take to foster a work environment that can better meet the mental health needs of your team members: Acknowledge your team’s experiences and the ongoing impact of mental health in the workplace during Covid-19. Identify existing resources in your organization that can help, and look for opportunities to create new ones. Seek organizational policy flexibility that gives team members the freedom to take time away as necessary. Ensure that staff know who they can go to internally in your organization if they need help and support. Get comfortable talking about mental health and talking about how people from different groups are impacted differently. Take your DEI work seriously, make it a priority, and treat the work with intentionality and strategic thinking. By following these steps, you can have a massive impact on your workplace and on creating an environment where employees feel safe to voice their concerns, talk about their mental health needs, and seek the support they need. Culture Cancel Follies By John Ellis Cancel culture is one of the most unlovely of the radical left’s contributions to our society. It’s currently rampant, and its reach is limitless; even the great philosopher David Hume's name has been removed from a University of Edinburgh building because of alleged racism. And we can be sure that many more giants of our culture will soon enough be canceled because the past offers any number of further victims - precisely because it’s the past. How is it that 80 percent of those under 30 voted for a socialist in 2016? According to Professor John Ellis, who spent five decades starting in the 1960s as a professor at the University of California in Santa Cruz, it is a result of indoctrination by the nation’s universities. We discuss his new book, The Breakdown of Higher Education: How it Happened, the Damage It Does, and What Can Be Done, about the movement that has now spilled onto the streets of America’s cities.Support Hidden Truth Show by going to http://www.patreon.com/hiddentruthshow and pledging just $5/month and receive access to Jim and special content and a Hidden Truth cap!Website: http://www.hiddentruthshow.comFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/hiddentruthshowInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/hiddentruthshow

Ven. Pomnyun's Answer to "What Can Be Done for World Peace and Harmony?” Selection from a Dharma Q&A session at Bethesda Chevy Chase Regional Service Center in Washington D.C. (September 18, 2019) Questioner (Q): This has been extremely educational for me. Thanks very much. I’m gonna raise this bar a little bit to the world peace. I like your [context] of Jungto and world peace and happiness. I would like your views and insight into what is the reason for the lack of harmony and peace. My thoughts are that is it because of the greed amongst people? Is it because of the envy that somebody else got more and I don’t have it although I have sufficient but I want more? Or is it because I insist that what I believe you should also believe. And that is what is causing a lot of terrorism and unhappiness and cause war? So even if I’m at peace with myself, with all this going on around me, it becomes difficult because of the disharmony in the world. And I would like to hear your views and what can be done and what are you doing with your organization which is admirable work that you are doing. 제목 : 세상의 평화와 화합을 위해 무엇을 할 수 있나요?
We are joined by author, brand expert, entrepreneur, motivationalist and thought leader Mark Pilkington to talk about his new book "Retail Therapy". Almost weekly, the news is full of stories about disappearing retail chains--some of which have been around for decades. From Toys'R'Us, Aeropostale and A&P, recognized names are vanishing overnight. While many people will point a finger at the "Amazon effect," this is an oversimplification. Deeper forces are at work that are changing people's relationships with brands, the balance of power between producers and consumers, and the whole nature of the supply chain that has existed since the industrial revolution. All over the world, as populism surges, as creative destruction makes economic change inevitable, the focus on manufacturing and manufacturing jobs is often front and center. Maybe it’s the old romantic of a nation of big shoulders; the factories and machines spinning noisily, providing well-paying jobs. But the fact is that far more jobs, almost 30 million, exist in the retail sector in the US, and those jobs are in far greater jeopardy than anything in manufacturing. We see it all around us on empty main streets and in malls. It’s easy and somewhat lazy to blame it all on Amazon, and the internet. The causes go far deeper. Our entire relationship to shopping, to the acquisition of things, and to brands is changing. And millennials are leading the way. As both millennials and aging, empty nest boomers move to cities, there simply isn't as much space to store all the stuff that we used to buy. Why else has Marie Kondo become an international icon? So if retail is to survive, a lot has to change according to Mark Pilkington in his book Retail Therapy: Why the Retail Industry is Broken – and What Can Be Done to Fix It. My conversation with Mark Pilkington:
