Martyn is a sales trainer; he is a non-pushy sales trainer. Everything he helps with is non-pushy selling. It's all about helping, the opposite of the cheesy 1980s pushy salesman. Marcus asks what social selling means. This is around social media. If your customer is on a platform it makes sense to be on that platform and interact with them there. Martyn says his target market is LinkedIn so he is on there at least once a day. He says social media allows us to share what we do without being “shouty”. Marytn was either making a video a day or a blog a day to keep getting content out there. Sam asks about moving people from social to being more firm leads and how to do that. Martyn says he is waiting for them to direct themselves to him, or refer people to him. Martyn says being in sales and not performing is a very difficult place to be as there is lots of pressure from home and work. Martyn says he found Daniel Disney  was a game changer for him in terms of the way he approached social selling. Martyn recommends this book as a good place to start: The Ultimate Linkedin Sales Guide and the Ultimate Guide to Linkedin Messaging. Marcus asks what makes a good salesman. He says the best salespeople are slightly introverted and great listeners. We have a past show about being a good listener A desire to help and curiosity. Curiosity is really important. Great listening means great questions. If you are having problems in sales, questions can help you. What questions could you have asked to get a better result on a sales call? These could be bold or challenging questions. This still isn't pushing, it's showing you are trying to help. Asking questions can mean you offer a solution to their problem that they hadn't thought of. Martyn says you are trying to be an advisor, not a salesman looking for a close. Sam asks after this gently, gently approach do you need to then apply a little pressure for a decision. Martyn says there are three things around this. 1.     People need to prepare better 2.     They need to ask better questions 3.     You need to agree on mutual actions during your current discussion. So this final part says you have pre-determined what you will both do after the call. So this isn't a hard close but it's about asking if they want help with their problem. He also suggests sending the quote with a title that will get their attention. Maybe linked to something that they are trying to achieve. Are You Using LinkedIn's Marketing Power to the Fullest? I sat down with my good friend Daniel Disney, author of The Real Secret to Becoming a LinkedIn Selling Machine. He is a guru for using LinkedIn's marketing power, and as mentioned in Fanatical Prospecting, I believe that it is one of the greatest sales tools ever created - along with the car, Google, the internet, email, and the telephone. Why You Should Use LinkedIn's Marketing Power LinkedIn offers a huge opportunity for salespeople, but it isn't easy and not everyone was born with the skills to use it. Salespeople need to learn and practice using LinkedIn. It isn't something that you can jump into headfirst and be successful. As salespeople, you tend to automatically sell, but with LinkedIn, you have to take a step back from your regular habits. It is all about the long game and building relationships, not quick sales.  You Have to Find the Balance Between Your Professional Persona and the Personal You Another problem that most salespeople have when using LinkedIn is that they have a hard time finding a balance.  We are so used to using social media in our personal lives that when we have to use LinkedIn professionally, it feels strange and can become a balancing act between being our professional self and staying social.  When you get it, however, it is a very powerful tool. LinkedIn is about nuance and building familiarity to create awareness for your product, and it is also a direct message tool. People Have Different Preferences for Receiving Messages That Resonate One thing to remember is that people have different preferences when it comes to engaging. Some like the phone, some like email, while some don't have the time to talk and others have full email boxes.  LinkedIn is a different way to reach someone to start a conversation, so in some respects, it can be a pirate's way in - but only if you use it effectively.  The key is reaching the prospect with the right message at the right time, and that often takes sequencing your communication so that it is cumulative and encompassing.  When you think about the numerous ways that we now communicate, you can't just use one channel, be it email, telephone, instant messaging, or snail mail. You have to be the master of all of them and master using LinkedIn's marketing power. If you only choose one silo, then statistically you are going to miss prospects. And if you do, you miss building familiarity through a channel and the cumulative effect.  Success lies not in one over the other; it is about using all the tools and being persistent in an authentic way.  Persistence is the Key to Building a Certain Amount of Reciprocity Persistence is a mental skill for people, and it demonstrates that you care about them and believe that you have the solution to help them.  Also, when you are persistent on a genuine level of obligations, you develop a certain amount of reciprocity.  When someone does something nice for you, and you are in the right place at the right time, you are likely to gain their business. You have to blend and sequence all the channels that you have to reach your prospect, which involves cumulative messaging.  People have so many different ways of communicating that you need to hit them from every angle you have at your disposal. Using LinkedIn's marketing power comprehensively can help you achieve that! Consistency Adds Cumulative Layers of Messaging The key to LinkedIn is consistency. If you walk into a conference room and you stand in the corner and don't say a word, you aren't going to make any connections.  If you walk in, however, and you strike up conversations with people, you are going to create connections that will generate business. LinkedIn is a platform that opens many opportunities. In this episode, Daniel Disney joins Donald Kelly as they talk about how you can use social selling to turn LinkedIn into a lead, sales, and revenue-generating machine.  Daniel Disney released his second book called, The Ultimate LinkedIn Sales Guide: How to Use Digital and Social Selling to Turn LinkedIn into a Lead, Sales, and Revenue Generating Machine.  The book is a comprehensive guide on LinkedIn for salespeople, sales teams, and businesses that want to get the most out of LinkedIn.  Generating leads on LinkedIn Everyone can play the social selling game on LinkedIn. You can create viral content, grow your audience, grow your brand, and you can end up with a ton of leads.  The downside is that not all of these leads are good leads, they're not your target customers, and they're not likely going to convert.  Common mistakes salespeople make on LinkedIn #1: Keeping a weak profile. At least 80% of teams that Daniel has trained with have profiles that aren't optimized. Their profiles are not customer-focused and are just poorly written CVs.  #2: Not sharing good content. Instead of sharing valuable content, they reshare company blogs that don't add a contribution. They are sharing weak content with their audiences.  #3: Sending bad messages. Salespeople make the mistake of sending out terribly written sales pitches and spam messages en masse, in high quantities, in hopes that something comes back.  Common mistakes:    Bad profile Bad content Bad messaging   Today, the way buyers now buy has changed and the information they now have before making a purchase has changed significantly.  Rewind 15 years ago and decision-makers didn't have access to the internet and didn't have access to all the information that we now have. There were no media reviews, no Google, and all these other things.  Buyers were then at the mercy of their salesperson to provide them with the necessary information.  Buyers today have standards and what they need from salespeople has changed significantly as well.  Salespeople have to step up their game if they want to stay above the prospect or their customers.  Generating leads on LinkedIn Make your profile more customer-focused. The customers and prospects don't want to hear about your accolades and other achievements. What they want to hear is how you're going to help them and how you can be an agent to help them get to their goals. Make your profile fully-focused on your target audience.  There are two kinds of leads: the outbound and the inbound leads. There are things that you can do that will have people come to you and there are things you can do that will create opportunities for you to go to them.  Start by connecting with relevant decision-makers in the industry on a regular basis, ideally about 10-20 connections everyday. You also need to begin sharing relevant value-giving content to your audience to grow your network. Share some thought leadership pieces, share the stories of your journey, share your knowledge and experiences, and more.  You don't need to be an expert to be successful on Linkedin. What you need to do is be authentic and share your journey with your audience. Your goal is to give as much value to your content as much as possible.  The Key to LinkedIn Messaging The key to LinkedIn messaging is hyper-personalization. It's not enough that their names are there nor is it enough to mention their company. My next guest is one of the world's leading Social Selling & LinkedIn experts. He is the author of the best-selling social selling book "The Million-Pound LinkedIn Message", a hugely popular keynote speaker, LinkedIn trainer and is the Founder of The Daily Sales, Daniel Disney is LinkedIn's most popular page for salespeople. Daniel was inspired to write his book The Million Pound LinkedIn Message – after receiving many terrible, cut and paste salesy connection messages. It is the one bug bares Daniel hears from decision-messages. The book was an opportunity to share tried and tested messages and help people use better messaging. LinkedIn is already trying to crack down on the bot messaging and knows of people who have been banned from LinkedIn and suggest LinkedIn might develop a spam box. Daniel said “It is like the sales virus; first we ruined the telephone because people hate cold callers, then we have ruined email because people hate spammers and it will not be long before Linkedin message fall fowl of the virus because of the poor use of messaging. Daniel says there are a lot of ethical salespeople, and as an industry, we need to bring more trust back. Daniel said it is not a bad thing that buyers have more power than sellers. It is an excellent time for salespeople that know the environment they are in, as there are so many opportunities to sell in a modern way that respect buyers. Salespeople need to be creative and sell in a modern way. Daniel started using LinkedIn seven years ago, the concept for daily sales was that all the best content was scattered across LinkedIn and the was to be the channel for sales. Daniel shared memes and doodles and it did so well Daily Sales just developed from there. Human sales work well said Daniel, who often uses humour in the Daily Sales channel to give people what they want in the way they want it. People buy people, and humour said Daniel, is an excellent way of cutting through those trust barriers and building a relationship. Articles are a fantastic way to gain traction, next to video, on LinkedIn because you can give more in-depth insights. Daniel advises that articles first challenge to get the reader to open and read the article so you must have a good title and strong image, to get them to click. Then write with lots of space as the reader is scrolling and the article must be engaging and easy to read, mixed with media a quote, a video or images. Finally, a strong call to action (CTA), of who you are and what you do for them. Daniel feels as a salesperson out to create opportunities that a CTA is essential to make it easy for your reader to take action, for example, “if you enjoyed this, please click like and share,” or “if you think I can help you, here is how you can reach me”. When it comes to building long term relationships and retention, you must open your curtains and let them see you, said Daniel. 15-years ago, you would make the awkward six-monthly call conversation of ‘how are you, how’s the product, can I sell you more’? Daniels biggest tip is to be consistent, build your brand, be present while sharing your journey. With LinkedIn and social, you can have regular conversations and engage in your customers content, so you do not have to have the awkward six-monthly conversations, as you can maintain those relationships regularly on social. Daniel advises, if you can be on LinkedIn, Monday to Friday at least once a day, post something, engage in other posts, building and maintaining long-standing relationships. When asked about personal and company pages, Daniels said the more significant potential sits in the personal page. Company pages are great and can develop many followers delivering great content that can be amplified by personal pages. A joined-up approach is best practice. Uncle Alf was the ultimate salesperson, selling all his life. Uncle Alf instilled ethical selling and mindset into Daniel and the values that Daniel maintains today. A role model and guide to Daniel, although he passed away five years ago. Uncle Alf realised all those years ago that the key to success in sales was to help people.
