Bom... Welcome back Hut Nation. We are jam-packed with this episode. Back to 2 bands on this show. First up, The Deuce B Word and Hater tackle the first interview due to Gnome being out. We welcome the band Alamance. These guys have been kicking around for some time. We talk about their history which includes playing back in the day with The Jonas Brothers. What interview wouldn't be key without some Disney talk. The guys also talk about Alamance's new sound and style and where they see themselves going musically. We cut to a clip of their track before we welcome the next band in. Next up Gnome returns out of his mysterious hut to join Hater. The guys welcome in Ross of Dead On A Sunday. This band is based out of Colorado and has a unique style. They talk about the roots and influences of DOAS. Another big topic is the solo aspect. Ross creates all the music for this show, from lyrics to all instruments, and then brings a band with him for touring. Amazing stuff is on the horizon for this band. We cut to another clip of DOAS before the recs potion. To close out, as usual, the guys give their newest music recs from singles to albums. It took long enough, but Hater and Gnome both had one of the singles be the same. Make sure to check out the Spotify playlist in the Hut link below to hear all the latest tracks and music from both amazing bands. Horns UP and Stay HEAVY. Today's guest is Ian Lee, the Co-Founder of Syndicate. Syndicate is a decentralized asset management platform and social network. It creates an investing syndicate for 1000x less time and money. Syndicate is a decentralized investing protocol and social network transforming how the world creates value. Previously, Ian was Managing Partner of IDEO CoLab Ventures, a crypto venture fund backed by IDEO focused on web3, crypto, and blockchain startups. From 2017-2021, Ian led investments and helped incubate 80+ crypto startups in the areas of DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, and more. From 2014-2017, Ian was the Head of Crypto at Citigroup and Citi Ventures globally. We discuss various topics, including Syndicate, Investing's role in society, the ETH merge, the dynamics of angel investing, and much more. We began our conversation by discussing Ian's background and what brought him to the crypto space. Ian shares how when he understood that Bitcoin and Crypto were an open Fintech stack, everything clicked for him, and he fell down the crypto rabbit hole. Ian explains why the investing industry is ripe for disruption. He breaks down how the tech stack is archaic, how bloated and slow the industry is, and how crypto can disrupt the investing sector. Ian also explains why investing is so important to society. Ian stresses that investing shapes our society by helping allocate monetary and human capital. Ian discusses how the venture capital infrastructure is incredibly inaccessible for many people because of the expenses required to start and participate in a fund. We discuss how Syndicate enables a new paradigm of capital formation by removing these barriers and eliminating the unnecessary overhead needed to create a venture fund. Our following conversation focused on how angel investors were the initial driving force that powered the Bitcoin and crypto industry. We discuss how they fueled the first startups of the space by being their primary source of capital for these early companies. We discuss the importance of DOAs and syndicates will empower more angel investing from a wider pool of people. Our next conversation topic centered around investing clubs. Ian shares that most investing clubs result from preexisting social connections and relationships. He explains how the main value these angels provide founders is not monetary but mentorship and guidance. Another fascinating topic of our conversation was reimagining the utility of ERC-721s and how they can be applied to different verticals. Ian explains how NFTs can be considered social networks and their possible applications. We discuss how Syndicate is enabling the formation of guilds. Ian describes how people with a unique set of skills are forming guilds to leverage their skills and help organizations that need these various skills. A fascinating topic we discussed centered around the ETH merge. We discuss the possible unintended consequences of the merge and how the move to POS will impact regulated organizations. Our final discussion topic centered around how Syndicate enables a swath of investing organizations to be built using Web3 tools. Please enjoy my conversation with Ian Lee. -- BingX is a crypto social trading exchange with over 3M users. In this episode of Understanding Crypto, Paul Abercrombie and James Burtt discuss practical techniques for incorporating web3 tools, tactics and platforms into real-world businesses. They discuss various ways this can be done; one of the most significant ways is understanding your target market's relationship with cryptocurrency. James comments, “Just think of crypto as a new digital toolbox… [Business owners should find] those tools that would fit your requirement and solve those problems that fit the needs or the wants and desires of your ideal customer base.” Bringing Cryptocurrencies into the Mainstream The drive by luxury firms to incorporate cryptocurrencies as a payment option heralds the mainstream inclusion of digital currency. This, according to Paul, is a progressive move that might offer a lesson to business owners interested in crypto. He feels that business owners should have a deep grasp of their target demographic's preferred payment methods. "You have to understand your customers," Paul remarks, "because if you look at the brands that are doing this, their customers are well versed, well educated, mainly, and perhaps have cryptocurrency holdings." Both James and Paul believe that crypto can help business owners expand their customer base. [Listen from:1:11] Business Models Although luxury brands have the consumer power to make the switch to cryptocurrency payments, the average business owner may not be able to do so because of their clientele. Both James and Paul, however, recommend smaller-scaled solutions that may be incorporated into a typical company model. Paul demonstrates why NFTs and digital assets should be at the heart of membership business models. Creator coins and social tokens can also be used as rewards in community-based frameworks. They both agree that in the actual world, most companies are behind the curve because most of their knowledge comes from conventional media. Nonetheless, James feels that accepting cryptocurrency payments is a start in the right direction. Paul believes that the current gap can be closed through the implementation of crypto payment platforms such as Coinbase, Moonpay and Bitpay, which convert virtual cash to fiat currency. In the middle of the crypto revolution, every business needs a well-balanced mix of digital and real-world mechanisms to flourish. [Listen from 4:46] Innovative Applications Through inventive applications, Web3 has the ability to tackle real-world issues. For anyone interested in working in and through the Web3 domain, James sees consultancy as a lucrative path. He feels that the increased interest in cryptocurrency by luxury brands exposes a void for experienced players to fill. Paul on the other hand feels that identifying Web3 solutions for current challenges might be a critical first step toward innovations in the crypto space. “I see crypto or blockchain as solving the world's biggest problems if the right people get hold of it and develop a solution or platform to solve those problems,” he says. He believes that company owners in the physical and digital worlds should come up with new ways to employ the existing Web3 tools to solve problems in both arenas. He recommends NFTs as a platform for learning and investment, as well as the use of blockchain technology to revolutionise the construction industry. “Biometric machines on site that could talk to the Blockchain that would prove that person was there. It would be on the digital ledger so that payments are quicker,” Paul says. Innovation would be expensive, but he believes funding could be sourced through DOAs, communities, and other Web3 platforms. [Listen from: 7:09] Key Takeaways: In the midst of the crypto revolution, every business needs a well-balanced mix of digital and real-world mechanisms to flourish. Accepting cryptocurrency payments is a start in the right direction. Identifying Web3 solutions for current challenges might be a critical first step toward innovations within the crypto space. Endlich is der Obend do, olle Kotza wur a groo und der Kolle kruch eis Nast. Vullgesackt sei Baeuchla waor, denn a hatte gutt gestuppt Wellfleisch, Wellwurscht, Plimpelwurscht, viel getrunka und gesuppt. Wies halt ies ei sichta Taga, obends leit em olls eim Maaga. Jitzt fing doas erschte on zu sprecha: Nuck, nuck, mer warn a bale stecha. Und wie doas erschte und hoatta geredt, do meente doas zweete, ar is hibsch fett, do daecht icht wull, is waer doas beste, mer machta Wurscht und zwoar gepresste. Do sproach doas dritte: sis gutt, surgt ok ver Blutt, surgt ok Ver Blutt. Do sproch doas zweete: Doas macht keene Miehe, doas kimmt olles ei de Briehe. Dann sproch das dritte: Macht kee Gelaerme, macht kee Gelaerme, surgt ok ver Daerme, surgt ok ver Daerme. Do finga se olle zu grunze oan, Faerme werd a wull salber hoan. Do sproch doas erschte: mer wern ins setza, Masser wetza, Masser wetza. Und wie se und hoatta de Masser geschliffa, do meent doas zweete: Jetzt zugegriffa, hier hilft erscht kee Aber und kee Wenn, mer nahma a baale bei a Benn, ees nimmt a beim linka, ees nimmt a beim rechta, wir beede haln a, ihr beede stecht a. In Episode 24 of my #podcast, I talk about powerful career questions,And how to use them …
Cross TrainingBow Before the Almighty CreatorRead or WatchSince the '70s, L'Oréal commercials have convinced scores of customers to pay more for shampoo and conditioner because, as their spokespeople put it, "You're worth it." Haven't we all thought that before? Maybe not about boutique hair care products, but I've convinced myself to spend more money than usual on something because "I'm worth it." But what if we flipped that thought process and asked what we'd spend on our God, who actually is worth it?We're Cross Training to develop our reverence, one of twelve marks of the Master we're working on this year. Reverence comes when we know God, fear him, worship him, and live in holiness. So how do we show honor and respect to a God who's incredibly worthy of worship? What You Need to KnowWhen we worship, we respond to God's grace and greatness by acts that express our reverence and submission to him. Worship expresses worth — think of it as expressing worth-ship. "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created" (Rev. 4:11).One New Testament word often translated "worship" (proskuneo) relates to bowing down (literally or figuratively). It's a profound act of respect, submission, and reverence. People often bowed before Jesus during his earthly life, worshiping him (Matt. 2:11; 14:33; 28:9). That would be unthinkable and totally inappropriate for any being but God (Rev. 19:9-10; Acts 10:25-26). Beware of letting anything else sneak into your heart as an object of such honor and devotion. We become like what we worship (Ps. 115:8), and we were created to worship only God (Matt. 4:11).Another word translated as "worship" (latreuo) was often used for priestly service. We present our bodies as a living sacrifice as an act of "spiritual worship" (Rom. 12:1). As his priests, we bring "spiritual sacrifices" (1 Peter 2:5) and "offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe" (Heb. 12:28). Our financial gifts supporting the Lord's work come before him as "a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God" (Phil. 4:18; 1 Cor. 16:1-4). Our prayers ascend to God's presence like the holy incense the priests used to offer in front of the most holy place (Rev. 8:3-4). Like the early disciples (Acts 2:42; Heb. 10:25) — and the congregation of Israel before them (Ps. 22:22; 107:32) — we fill our lives with God's praise, worshiping him in private (Matt. 6:5-6) and gathering with others to worship and edify one another (1 Cor. 14:15-26). It's not important where we worship, but it does matter how we worship, as God seeks "true worshipers" who "worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:20-24). In sincerity and devotion, we lower ourselves in obedient surrender, lifting him up in his way (Matt. 15:9; Col. 2:23). What You Need to DoAs you see God's splendor all around you and consider his great acts of creation and deliverance, respond by creating what you can to magnify him. We can speak and write words that proclaim his excellence (1 Peter 2:9-10). We can sing beautiful songs about him to "continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God ... the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name" (Heb. 13:15). When you "do good and ... share what you have," God considers it an offering to him, and "such sacrifices are pleasing to God" (Heb. 13:16). The Psalms have a lot to teach us about adoring God, placing our full hope in him, and entrusting our lives under his kingship. Make the Psalms a regular part of your life, reading, praying, even singing them. Gather with the saints on the first day of the week to remember Jesus by breaking bread (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:23-28). In this supper of remembrance and communion (1 Cor. 10:16-17), we draw near to him in reverent gratitude, proclaiming what the Lord did for us in his death (1 Cor. 11:26). It's a moment with our Lord not to be missed. Through the WeekRead (Mon) — John 4:20-24; Col. 3:14-17; Rom. 12:1-2; Ps. 95:1-6; Mal. 1:6-14Reflect (Tue) — What distracts me from my true focus in worship?Request (Wed) — "Heavenly Father, may your name be held in reverence" (cf. Matt. 6:9). Respond (Thu) — Bow down in your room and pray a psalm of worship. Reach Out (Fri) — What idols have you dethroned from your heart to keep God at the center?Support the Show

This week we'll be talking with Ryan Lortie and Baptiste Daroussin about GNOME on BSD. Upstream development is finally treating the BSDs as a first class citizen, so we'll hear about how the recent porting efforts have been since. This episode was brought to you by Headlines OpenBSD presents tame (https://www.marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=143725996614627&w=2) Theo de Raadt sent out an email detailing OpenBSD's new "tame" subsystem, written by Nicholas Marriott and himself, for restricting what processes can and can't do When using tame, programs will switch to a "restricted-service operating mode," limiting them to only the things they actually need to do As for the background: "Generally there are two models of operation. The first model requires a major rewrite of application software for effective use (ie. capsicum). The other model in common use lacks granularity, and allows or denies an operation throughout the entire lifetime of a process. As a result, they lack differentiation between program 'initialization' versus 'main servicing loop.' systrace had the same problem. My observation is that programs need a large variety of calls during initialization, but few in their main loops." Some initial categories of operation include: computation, memory management, read-write operations on file descriptors, opening of files and, of course, networking Restrictions can also be stacked further into the lifespan of the process, but removed abilities can never be regained (obviously) Anything that tries to access resources outside of its in-place limits gets terminated with a SIGKILL or, optionally, a SIGABRT (which can produce useful core dumps for investigation) Also included are 29 examples of userland programs that get additional protection with very minimal changes to the source - only 2 or 3 lines needing changed in the case of binaries like cat, ps, dmesg, etc. This is an initial work-in-progress version of tame, so there may be more improvements or further (https://www.marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=143740834710502&w=2) control (https://www.marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=143741052411159&w=2) options added before it hits a release (very specific access policies can sometimes backfire (https://forums.grsecurity.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2522), however) The man page, also included in the mail, provides some specifics about how to integrate tame properly into your code (which, by design, was made very easy to do - making it simple means third party programs are more likely to actually use it) Kernel bits are in the tree now (https://www.marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=143727335416513&w=2), with userland changes starting to trickle in too Combined with a myriad of memory protections (http://www.bsdnow.tv/episodes/2015_05_13-exclusive_disjunction), tight privilege separation and (above all else (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenBSD_security_features)) good coding practices, tame should further harden the OpenBSD security fortress Further discussion (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9928221) can (https://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/3dsr0t) be (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20150719000800&mode=flat) found (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9909429) in (https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/3ds66o) the (https://lobste.rs/s/tbbtfs) usual (https://www.reddit.com/r/openbsd/comments/3ds64c) places (https://www.reddit.com/r/BSD/comments/3ds681) you'd expect *** Using Docker on FreeBSD (https://wiki.freebsd.org/Docker) With the experimental Docker port landing in FreeBSD a few weeks ago, some initial docs are starting to show up This docker is "the real thing," and isn't using a virtual machine as the backend - as such, it has some limitations The FreeBSD wiki has a page detailing how it works in general, as well as more info about those limitations When running Linux containers, it will only work as well as the Linux ABI compat layer for your version of FreeBSD (11.0, or -CURRENT when we're recording this, is where all the action is for 64bit support) For users on 10.X, there's also a FreeBSD container available, which allows you to use Docker as a fancy jail manager (it uses the jail subsystem internally) Give it a try, let us know how you find it to be compared to other solutions *** OpenBSD imports doas, removes sudo (http://www.tedunangst.com/flak/post/doas) OpenBSD has included the ubiquitous "sudo" utility for many years now, and the current maintainer of sudo (Todd C. Miller) is also a long-time OpenBSD dev The version included in the base system was much smaller than the latest current version used elsewhere, but was based on older code Some internal discussion lead to the decision that sudo should probably be moved to ports now, where it can be updated easily and offer all the extra features that were missing in base (LDAP and whatnot) Ted Unangst conjured up with a rewritten utility to replace it in the base system, dubbed "do as," with the aim of being more simple and compact There were concerns that sudo was too big and too complicated, and a quick 'n' dirty check reveals that doas is around 350 lines of code, while sudo is around 10,000 - which would you rather have as a setuid root binary? After the initial import, a number of developers began reviewing and improving various bits here and there You can check out the code (http://cvsweb.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/src/usr.bin/doas/) now if you're interested Command usage (http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi/OpenBSD-current/man1/doas.1) and config syntax (http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi/OpenBSD-current/man5/doas.conf.5) seem pretty straightforward More discussion (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9914693) on HN *** What would you like to see in FreeBSD (https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/3d80vt/what_would_you_like_to_see_in_freebsd/) Adrian Chadd started a reddit thread about areas in which FreeBSD could be improved, asking the community what they'd like to see There are over 200 comments that span a wide range of topics, so we'll just cover a few of the more popular requests - check the very long thread if you're interested in more The top comment says things don't "just work," citing failover link aggregation of LACP laggs, PPPoE issues, disorganized jail configuration options, unclear CARP configuration and userland dtrace being unstable Another common one was that there are three firewalls in the base system, with ipfilter and pf being kinda dead now - should they be removed, and more focus put into ipfw? Video drivers also came up frequently, with users hoping for better OpenGL support and support for newer graphics cards from Intel and AMD - similar comments were made about wireless chipsets as well Some other replies included more clarity with pkgng output, paying more attention to security issues, updating PF to match the one in OpenBSD, improved laptop support, a graphical installer, LibreSSL in base, more focus on embedded MIPS devices, binary packages with different config options, steam support and lots more At least one user suggested better "marketing" for FreeBSD, with more advocacy and (hopefully) more business adoption That one really applies to all the BSDs, and regular users (that's you listening to this) can help make it happen for whichever ones you use right now Maybe Adrian can singlehandedly do all the work and make all the users happy *** Interview - Ryan Lortie & Baptiste Daroussin Porting the latest GNOME code to FreeBSD News Roundup Introducing resflash (http://stable.rcesoftware.com/resflash/) If you haven't heard of resflash before, it's "a tool for building OpenBSD images for embedded and cloud environments in a programmatic, reproducible way" One of the major benefits to images like this is the read-only filesystem, so there's no possibility of filesystem corruption if power is lost There's an optional read-write partition as well, used for any persistent changes you want to make You can check out the source code on Github (https://github.com/bconway/resflash) or read the main site for more info *** Jails with iocage (http://pid1.com/posts/post10.html) There are a growing number of FreeBSD jail management utilities: ezjail, cbsd, warden and a few others After looking at all the different choices, the author of this blog post eventually settled on iocage (https://github.com/iocage/iocage) for the job The post walks you through the basic configuration and usage of iocage for creating managing jails If you've been unhappy with ezjail or some of the others, iocage might be worth giving a try instead (it also has really good ZFS integration) *** DragonFly GPU improvements (http://lists.dragonflybsd.org/pipermail/users/2015-July/207892.html) DragonFlyBSD continues to up their graphics game, this time with Intel's ValleyView series of CPUs These GPUs are primarily used in the newer Atom CPUs and offer much better performance than the older ones A git branch was created to hold the fixes for now while the last remaining bugs get fixed Fully-accelerated Broadwell support and an update to newer DRM code are also available in the git branch, and will be merged to the main tree after some testing *** Branchless development (http://www.tedunangst.com/flak/post/branchless-development) Ted Unangst has a new blog post up, talking about software branches and the effects of having (or not having) them He covers integrating and merging code, and the versioning problems that can happen with multiple people contributing at once "For an open source project, branching is counter intuitively antisocial. For instance, I usually tell people I'm running OpenBSD, but that's kind of a lie. I'm actually running teduBSD, which is like OpenBSD but has some changes to make it even better. Of course, you can't have teduBSD because I'm selfish. I'm also lazy, and only inclined to make my changes work for me, not everyone else." The solution, according to him, is bringing all the code the developers are using closer together One big benefit is that WIP code gets tested much faster (and bugs get fixed early on) *** Feedback/Questions Matthew writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s21yQtBCCK) Chris writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s21oFA80kY) Anonymous writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s2JYvTlJlm) Bill writes in (http://slexy.org/view/s21LXvk53z) ***
