This week on Everything You Didn't Know About Herbalism, we are thrilled to share an eye-opening conversation with the passionate author, knowledgeable educator, and jack of all trades within the herbal world, Nicole Telkes. Listen in as Thomas and Nicole deep dive into how the collision of cultures for millennia weaved our understanding of herbalism in the present day, the troubling history between herbalism and American healthcare, and how we can reconnect the herbal community in a changing world through the core of herbalism itself: the botanicals that surround us. In Nicole's words, “You can accomplish so much with just a simple cup of tea with people”. As always, we thank you for joining us on another botanical adventure and are honored to have you tag along with us on this ride. Remember, we want to hear from you! Your questions, ideas, and who you want to hear from are invaluable to our podcast. Email us at podcast@mountainroseherbs.com to let us know what solutions we should uncover next within the vast world of herbalism.

We met Jeannette MacDougall during an exhibition at Calvin College's (106) Gallery at ArtPrize 2015. In this exhibit "Weighing the Landscape", installed by curator Joel Zwart, Jeanette, Armin and I were hanging next to each other. Our friendship began during that time as we all felt our artwork had a very cohesive aesthetic and professionalism. Jeannette now resides in Texas and continues her travels and artist residencies across the nation and internationally. Her background in being the director in France for the art residency program of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts has given her the expertise to not only pursue her own residency goals but also advise artist who are looking to pursue that lifestyle in their art practice. She also hosts teaching workshops in the countryside of the south of France and in Scotland. "I am an Artist-Painter on a gypsy sojourn. I seek the solitude of the landscape; content to travel the distance through my work to capture what I long for; a sanctuary in nature. I come away with what I can carry in memory and inspiration." states Jeannette. I am a contemporary artist who works in a multitude of mixed paint mediums. My process culminates in the studio but the joyful inspiration comes from seeking out a piece of the landscape that stops me in my tracks. Like a hunter I observe what is hidden. It is in the underbrush and the dark beauty in nature that appeals to me. Dead limbs, fallen trees are evidence of our impermanence. Perfection is unreal but the imperfect is perfectly beautiful.  I build fresco-like paintings in plaster on birch wood panels which can handle the distress of marred surfaces. The application of various layers and removal of pigment is not unlike an excavation. I search for the undiscovered strata beneath the surface only to leave it be and carefully move on to new ground. Southwest School of Art, San Antonio Texas / Graduate of Parsons School of Art NYC / Trinity University SA Texas  Jeannette's Plein Air Workshop in Roane, France is June 11 - 18. There's so much to love about evening primrose (Oenothera spp.)! In this episode, you'll get to listen in as I discuss the many gifts of this beautiful plant with herbalist and teacher, Ginger Webb.As you'll see, evening primrose is not only swoon-worthy, but it's abundant. Almost everybody has an evening primrose that grows in their region. And the various species are similar enough in their medicinal properties that they're essentially interchangeable. As a listener, you'll also have access to Ginger's Primrose Bliss tea blend, which may just become a treasured part of your evening relax and unwind routine.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► Which comes first, harvesting and making medicine or stewarding – and why?► What taste signals that an herb may be a nervine (an herb for the nervous system)?► Why evening primrose can be an ally for resting in a go-go-go culture► Why relying on plants' common names can be dangerous (literally)Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation: “Let's take the time to rest. Let's take the time to do nothing. Let's take the time just to be. I feel like evening primrose really allows that.”For those of you who aren't already familiar with her, Ginger Webb has been practicing herbalism in and around Austin, Texas, for over 25 years. Trained by Michael Moore at the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine, Ginger carries on Michael's tradition of bioregional, populist herbalism, adding her own perspectives and working most closely with the plants of central Texas. She supplies small batch, lovingly-made herbal medicine to her clients and community through her company Texas Medicinals, and teaches herbalism, (including a 200-hour foundational program and a shorter clinical program) as the primary teacher at Sacred Journey School of Herbalism. Ginger currently lives on 6 acres in the Texas Hill Country, and enjoys regular visits from her 21 year old child, Chia, and Chia's French bulldog, Ham.I'm thrilled to share our conversation with you today!----Get full show notes and more information at: herbswithrosaleepodcast.comFor more behind-the-scenes of this podcast, follow @rosaleedelaforet on Instagram! The secret to using herbs successfully begins with knowing who YOU are. She even shares things about elecampane that were new to me (and that's saying something, after years of being herb-obsessed)! As a listener, you'll also have access to Henriette's effective and yummy elecampane cough syrup recipe.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► Why Henriette's herbal website, which was one of the first sites out there, is such a treasure in the herbal world► Why elecampane is one of the herbs Henriette always turns to when formulating a tea for grief► The connection between Pokemon cards and Henriette's educational work as an herbalist► The wonderful herbal tradition Henriette remembers from her grandmother's villageHere is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation: “Elecampane is special. It's very grounding, and it's good for coughs and good to get long term stuff out of the lungs. And it's good for digestion.”For those of you who aren't already familiar with her, Henriette Kress has been working with herbs since she was about five. Talking all about Integrative Medicine, Intuitive plant-based eating and Ayurveda with my favorite guest yet Dr. Siri Chand Khalsa Dr. Siri's Instagram www.instagram.com/dr.sirichand Dr. Siri's Websire thanksliving.drsirichand.com For Dr. Khalsa, the intersection of science and creativity as it mingles in cooking has always been a delight. An avid cook since a young age, she was watching cooking shows instead of cartoons as a child and as the years have progressed, she has been blessed to travel to great restaurants and cooking centers around the world. Through this journey, she has slowly formulated a comprehensive holistic approach to vegetarian eating and nutrition. Science has always been a passion and she was fortunate to attend Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in suburban Washington, DC. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Virginia and went on in her studies to obtain a Master's degree in Biology with a focus in Reproductive Endocrinology at Old Dominion University. After completing her graduate degree, she entered Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia and then progressed to Mayo Clinic in Florida to complete a residency in Internal Medicine. She relocated to Phoenix five years ago from the East Coast. With a life long interest in integrating innovative therapies and finding effective tools for healing, she has continued her studies after residency by becoming a certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor, Reiki Master, and participated in advanced studies in Ayurveda, Nutrition and Naturopathy. Board certified in Internal Medicine and Holistic Medicine, she strives to integrate ancient therapies with modern medicine in her hospice and palliative medicine practice. Her desire to learn new ways of healing also continues internationally and these explorations have taken her around the world to remote teaching centers in India, Brazil, Europe and Nepal where she has further learned about traditional healing systems and nutrition as the cornerstone for vitality. In addition to patient care, Dr Khalsa has been invited to lecture to heath care providers in different settings, including Mountain Park Health System, Southwest School for Naturopathic Medicine, University of Arizona's Program in Integrative Medicine, Kundalini Yoga teacher training courses and Reiki Conferences. An active member in the Sikh community, she has served food in homeless shelters and encourages all to embody the Sikh concept of "seva" or service to humanity. She has seen that our health is directly linked to our diet and believes this starts with an increased awareness surrounding the planting and production of our food supply. Finding that she was routinely asked to share recipes, she created a food blog, LuminousFoods.com, where she offers tips for preparing her favorite vegetarian foods and highlights resources for learning more about nutrition. Educating health care providers that Food is Medicine and incorporating this notion into physician practices is Dr. Khalsa's goal for creating an experiential lecture where food samples are given as core principles are discussed. She has found that sharing a meal, no matter the size of the table, is one the great joys in her life.
