Benevolent cyborgs. Not a phrase you hear often these days. With all the hand-wringing and media fear-mongering about AI and new technologies, we seem to have lost the bigger vision of how technology can improve our lives. That's why today, I'm speaking with Dr. Cori Lathan, a techno-optimist who believes technology can be used to build empathy and connection. Today we discuss how Star Wars and a very creative 2nd grade teacher sparked her journey into innovation and invention, how technology is being used to build empathy and connection, why empathy makes a better design team, and the future of human-machine interaction. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Technology can be a tool to help children achieve developmental milestones and build empathy. The media will give the negative side of AI and technology because it gets better views and clicks. But great things are happening with technology that is helping to create a beautiful future. Designing tech is about more than what happens behind the computer screen. It is about understanding the user experience and what it means for your end user. "We are creating the future, someone isn't doing it for us. We can create the future we want to see. We can choose the direction it goes." — Dr. Cori Lathan Episode References: Dr. Cori Lathan's Book: Inventing the Future, Stories from a Techno-Optimist: https://inventthefuture.tech/Dr. Cori Lathan's TEDx Talk: Innovation, Empathy, and the Future of Human-Machine Interaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnV6QDhwvhkThe Empathy Edge Podcast: Ron Gura: How Technology Helps People Navigate GriefBrand Story Breakthrough course to help you craft a clear, compelling brand story - includes weekly office hours with Maria!About Corinna Lathan + Founder and Former Board Chair and CEODr. Corinna Lathan is a technology entrepreneur who has developed robots for kids with disabilities, virtual reality technology for the space station, and wearable sensors for training surgeons and soldiers. Join us for the fantastic insight into Dr. Rachel Worman's work trying to disentangle the great web of confusion around pelvic floor muscle tone.  Rachel has taken a deep dive into all the research looking into high tone/overactive/hypertonic pelvic floor muscles and its relationship with symptoms, and produced for us all a systematic review. She has been working with the team at the University of Queensland, including Ryan Stafford and Paul Hodges, and recently produced this epic piece of brilliance: "Evidence for pelvic floor muscle increased tone/overactivity in pelvic health conditions?: a systematic review”   Rachel is a fellow MSK and pelvic health clinician and researcher. She too has been trying to understand the difference in “types of tone” in the pelvic floor muscles and how this relates to symptoms.    Rachel has a Bachelor or Science, Biopsychology, Masters in Physical Therapy, Doctorate in Physical Therapist and current PhD Candidate at the University of Queensland.    We hope this episode helps you get some clarity around pelvic floor muscle activity and tone and how we can better describe, measure, and treat those with issues surrounding greater or increased tone.   Thanks for listening.    Lori, Tam and Jo

The older we get, the more afraid we are to try and learn new things. Why is it harder to break out of our comfort zone in retirement?    When you say goodbye to your career, you leave behind decades of mastery to become a novice at retirement. Everything new is hard at first. It takes a brave person to try something new, knowing they may not be “good” at it.   Bob Benno spent most of his life as a scientist. As a professor at William Paterson University, he was active as a teacher, researcher and program director in Biopsychology. After 35 years, Bob closed the book on that chapter of his life and entered retirement.   Fortunately, he had a lifelong interest in music and was able to open Chapter X in his life with an intensive study of Jazz. In this episode, he shares his honest and unfiltered story with us.   We discussed:   How playing jazz unexpectedly helped Bob transition careers in science The struggles he faced after leaving behind his career in the classroom Dealing with the loss of identity in retirement (and discovering a new one)  Why perspective is healthy for finding fulfillment and happiness The importance of balancing structure and free time in retirement

If you are someone interested in both ancient wisdom and modern science's approaches to mental health and wellness, then you are going to love this interview as Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews 2 experts who have a penchant for convergence. While most of the United States is clearly divided on political stances, the same often goes for medicine where people will blindly dismiss anything that doesn't fit their personal identity paradigm, sticking to their version of "medicine" with an emotional fervor: Either 1. Modern/ Western Medicine Approaches, or 2. Natural or "holistic" Methods. While the emerging field of Functional Medicine has made some progress on merging the best of Modern and Holistic Approaches, it often falls short. Dr. Nicole Cain ND MA (Board-Certified NMD in Arizona and Master's of Clinical Psychology) and Hadlee Garrison (University of Michigan with a B.S. in Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience and an Master's of Public Health in Health Behavior and Health Education) are a powerhouse in utilizing both the research, testing, and breakthroughs of modern and Western medicine along with time-tested approaches that are more Natural and Holistic. The conversation flows are we explore what exactly "holistic mental health" is and why it is important to people who are looking to heal from mental health related stress and improve overall wellness.   Dr. Nicole Cain, ND MA is a nationally renowned expert in natural mental health, helping people transform their mental health naturally by uncovering the root cause. She has been published by Salon Magazine, Well + Good, Psychology Today, quoted in Forbes and more!   Happy Healthy Hadlee is an ayurvedic expert, academic, healer and her mission is to teach people how to transform their habits, health, bodies, energy, confidence, and all of the other things in order to lead less stressed and more joyful lives. We overview the science some and then make some inferences about what might be going on in the people's brains, as regards to motivation, in the post-pandemic world.

As Founder and CEO of Alexander Daas, Alex Feldman drives the vision and growth of the brand, including its design and distribution, retail presence and ecommerce business. Feldman grew up in the business of opticianry, with his parents owning a small optical shop in San Francisco, California.  In 2006 Feldman bought out his parent's small business and began growing the company. After over a decade of working on the sales floor and styling thousands of politicians, athletes, celebrities, locals and more, Feldman found a gap in high-end eyewear and launched his eyewear brand Alexander Daas. The collection focused on styles to fit narrow/petite faces––giving adults freedom from buying children's frames––a huge unmet need in independent luxury eyewear. Since then, he has grown retail operations with storefronts in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego, and recently online at https://alexanderdaas.com/ (AlexanderDaas.com.) Feldman continues to build on his vision of opening luxury shops in quaint neighborhoods that feature skilled eyewear stylists, representing a true intersection of the medical and fashion industries. Feldman graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology. When he's not designing and developing new eyewear styles or connecting with the luxury eyewear community, you can find him spending time with his wife and three boys (their so called in-house “basketball team”), watching Rocky and traveling. Hookup without Heartbreak Intimacy and relationship coach Lia Holmgren's new book, Hookup Without Heartbreak, teaches women to let go of negative feelings after casual hook ups/sex, as well as how to reclaim one's sexual freedom. Learn the do's and don'ts of casual sex, the history and science behind hooking up, and learn all you need to know before going on that next date. Casual sex: How do people deal with it? The main focus of this book is double standards – how casual sex can be widely accepted for men but seen as inappropriate for women. Hormones and neurobiology play a big part as to why women tend to feel more attached after having casual sex than men do. Lia also looks into the role of religion, education, and upbringing to explain why women feel a certain way and why women have so much shame and fear around casual sex. The do's and don'ts in casual sex Lia's book has 24 tips for women who have caught feelings and then had their hearts broken after casual hookups. These include ways to get over the person, how to deal with hookups who ghost afterwards, how to be safe on dates and how to not feel shame afterwards. The book also talks about how to appreciate the experience and how to have casual sex without any expectations. How do you discern whether you have the right reasons to hookup? It's important for a person to know their intentions before engaging in a casual hookup. Is it a want for sex or a need for intimacy and closeness? Honesty and clear communication with one's partner is key, as well as being honest with oneself. Key takeaways The book aims to teach women that it's okay to have casual sex for sex, without the shame and guilt. It's important for men to be more understanding and honest after casual sex. Honesty and clear communication is important for both sides.
