PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Patrick Read Johnson (SPACED INVADERS, DRAGONHEART, BABY'S DAY OUT) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career and the incredible 18 YEAR journey that it took to make his latest film 5-25-77. From a child who spent every waking moment he had creating his own home movie homages to the films that “restructured his DNA”… to becoming one of the very first people alive to ever see STAR WARS… to working as an effects artist on some of the 80's most notable genre films … to directing films like SPACED INVADERS, ANGUS and BABY'S DAY OUT… to working with the legendary Henson Company on TV shows like DINOSAURS… to writing the beloved fantasy film DRAGONHEART (the very first movie poster Adam had framed in his first apartment)… to working alongside and befriending some of the industry's biggest icons… to the breathtaking 18 years he spent making his autobiographical opus 5-25-77 (now playing on Showtime, Amazon Prime, and other digital platforms)… Patrick's story is like a Hollywood fever dream come to life. If you're not inspired to work just a little bit harder at making your own dreams come true after listening to this amazing conversation then your speakers weren't on! Dr. Arwen also provides “Hollywood Therapy” for someone struggling to find the laughs in the comedy they've been watching lately.

Patrick Read Johnson is an accomplished writer and filmmaker who has directed movies like Spaced Invaders, Angus, Baby's Day Out, The Genesis Code and co-wrote the story for the film DragonHeart. His latest project is the film 5-25-77. It's a semi-autobiographical film about a teenager named Patrick from Illinois who wants to be a filmmaker. Three months before Star Wars: A New Hope opened in 1977, he gets to see a working print at Lucasfilm effects house Industrial Light and Magic. Technically, he's the world's first Star Wars fan. Johnson's semi-autobiographical film 5-25-77 is a loving homage to Star Wars and other '70s sci-fi films. But it's also a fantastic coming of age film that artfully showcases how finding out who you are might be as easy as following your dreams. The film was shot in 2004, but through various financial setbacks is finally being released this week. In fact, what you'll learn quickly from my conversation with Patrick is that it's hard to separate the man from his film and that the making of 5-25-77 is as much an adventure as what's on screen. This week on the Bad Taste Video Podcast we go back to 1990 to watch an alien invasion film that isn't as terrifying as most of the others we cover but it takes place on Halloween so its automatically great! This week we watched the goofiest aliens of the 90's in "Spaced Invaders"!

For our final week of 2001: A Space Augusty, we decided to take your childhood favorites and turn them on their head. We've exposed the horrors of Critters, Mac and Me, Lilo and Stitch, Star Kid, The Iron Giant, and Spaced Invaders, to name a few. We discuss why aliens are so enamored by children, why Invader Zim is the shit, why The Hunchback of Notre Dame is definitely not kid friendly, and what we really think of the Shape of Water. This episode is definitely NSFW, so we strongly suggest ear buds if you're in public. We had a ton of fun with this one--it's definitely a mish mash of insanity, but we wouldn't have it any other way. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed being inappropriate lol. The brothers are joined today by Kirk Thatcher, an Emmy award winning writer/producer, an award winning television, commercial and viral video director, as well as a creature maker and character designer for both films and television. Expect to hear... ...How and why Kirk became an artist in spite of having parents that did not see it as a lucrative or even practical career path. ...what it was like to design and create creatures for Return of the Jedi, Star Trek II and III, E.T., and others. ...the process behind writing Muppet films and the secret to bringing Muppet characters to life. MEMORABLE QUOTES BY KIRK “I was interested in the cinema as not only a diversion but also as a career. Seeing that there were, indeed, vocations and avocations in the industry of cinema, or film if you will, I realized that not only did I enjoy viewing these productions, but I was also quite curious and interested in making them.” “They're dead. They're dehydrated, mummified Muppets. Whereas, when we're in the moment, and the characters come alive, particularly once you create out of yourself, that's the magic.” “Performers are more than just the people who read the lines. The Muppets, because they've been around so long, the performers are so integral, so it has to be much more of a collaboration.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE Growing up in Los Angeles as an adopted child [05:18] Where Kirk discovered and developed his artistic abilities [12:48] Working on Return of the Jedi [18:12] Kirk's life in snapshots [24:30] Becoming an associate producer on Star Trek IV [32:10] Co-writing Muppet Treasure Island [46:30] Bringing that “extra insanity” to storytelling and character development [52:03] Taking risks with the Muppets [59:27] Collaborating with the brothers to create Pepe the King Prawn [1:01:40] ABOUT OUR GUEST Kirk R. Prepare to laugh, Earth Scum! In 1990 Touchstone Pictures invaded movie theaters with Spaced Invaders, a family comedy starring Ariana Richards with out of this world ambitions. An eclectic crew of Martians arrive in small town Illinois thinking they are part of conquering force, but soon realize the transmission they heard was just a Halloween night broadcast of Orson Welles' infamous War of the Worlds radio broadcast. Hijinks ensue. The film was a mainstay of video store shelves in the 90s, but failed to blow up the box office upon it's release. Now, nearly 30 years later, the SequelQuest crew thinks they are up to the challenge of creating a viable Spaced Invaders 2 with the help of a very special guest.Join Adam, Jeff and Jeramy as they are piloted by romance author and sci-fi fan, “Commander” Sue London (www.bysuelondon.com) through the goofy fun and frantic action of this cult Halloween film in order to imagine a Spaced Invaders sequel. Everyone, aboard the ship, we're heading to Big Bean, Illinois! Prepare to die, Earth scum, as we review one of Jack's favorite movies at Huntsville Home Video!
This week the duo attacks the movie that has haunted at least one of their brains for the past 2 decades. That's right it's...a random kid's sci fi movie with no famous people in it. I guess you could somewhat include the character who pretends to be Jack Nicholson as one? Maybe? Who knows, Get to the Podcast and get a load of Spaced Invaders.
The spring of 1990 continues on Out of Touchstone, as Mike and Chad discuss two movies for which they held low expectations and wound up being pleasantly surprised. The first is ERNEST GOES TO JAIL, as Jim Varney ("The Clown Prince of Touchstone") returns to the role of Ernest P. Worrell to get some of his biggest laughs in his most adult-oriented adventure. Finally, the hosts look at the sci-fi shenanigans of SPACED INVADERS, a movie that is overlooked and often misunderstood by the majority of viewers. Give these movies a chance and you might enjoy them both!
Travis & Alex prepare to die as the Earth scum that they are. As they do so, they have a lot of fun taking a look at this charming and incredible looking small budget alien film. When a bunch of inept Martians mistakenly think they've missed the invasion of Earth, they arrive on Halloween night just in time for Big Bean, Illinois's rebroadcast of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds. Chaos ensues thanks to the lack of intelligent life in the universe and the Martian empire's penchant for micromanaging their navy. Douglas Barr, Royal Dano, Ariana Richards and Gregg Berger star in Spaced Invaders. A little rambling-ly fun romp with Martians who mistakenly land on Earth. Will they take over the world? Or, will the world over-take them. Tune in this week to find out. Clearly, we've already found out because the episode is over. Which means, we have watched the movie. Spoiler Alert. This one is PG: Pure Gimmick. It's a kids movie, that's for sure. The costume design is on point. Although, the set choices are eerily reminiscent of Trucks (1997) and Leprechaun (1993). Join us while we get off-topic, totally miss the plot, and laugh for 20 minutes. The first film in our trio of episodes about PG films made for kids. WARNING! Before you push play on this episode thinking youre going to get 90 minutes of reminiscing about the good old days while watching a cute 1990 kids flick please BE WARNED! Due to many of our favorite Hollywood types getting outed for some very heinous acts this podcast takes a dark turn. Do not proceed if you are offended by STRONG LANGUAGE, talk of SEXUAL ASSAULT and/or PEDOPHILIA. You may think this is a joke but it is not. SO! This week's interview allowed Doug to connect with so many of his favorite childhood memories of watching Spaced Invaders, Dinosaurs, Muppets, Theodore Rex, Looney Tunes, and so many more, because he chatted with Puppeteer and Voice Artist Bruce Lanoil. Bruce talked about the roots he has in New Jersey, how he found his way into puppetry, lots of behind the scene stories from his long list of credits, and his passion for what he does. Bruce was able to work on things he grew up loving. Here is Bruce's IMDb so you can check out his other credits https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0487010/ Next week's review is Looney Tunes: Back in Action which was the sequel to Space Jam. EP86 | A Spaced Invaders Sequel Prepare to laugh, Earth Scum! Now, nearly 30 years later, the SequelQuest crew thinks they are up to the challenge of creating a viable Spaced Invaders 2 with the help of a very special guest. Join Adam, Jeff and Jeramy as they are piloted by romance author and sci-fi fan, "Commander" Sue London (www.bysuelondon.com) through the goofy fun and frantic action of this cult Halloween film in order to imagine a Spaced Invaders sequel. Discover the secrets of the Martian home world. Swoon at the budding romance between a special effects artist and a frisbee champion. And what does Howard The Duck have to do with all of this? Listen now and find out! Stream it from the link below or find the show on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Podbean, SoundCloud and more. NEW! It's Halloweentime again at the old HMN place, and the guys have once again agreed to subject themselves to an appropriately questionable kids' movie in honor of the best day of the freakin' year - this time around, it's Ernest Scared Stupid from 1991. It's no Spaced Invaders, but Adam and Scott have reservations, while Matt is, as usual, awashed in a golden shower of nostalgia. Bust out your miak, troll boogers, and weird multi-costume expositional montages, it's the annual Horror Movie Night Halloween episode!
The upside: we found Kevin Middleton's Halloween costume. The downside: we watched Spaced Invaders.
2015 was a magnificent year for physics. Not only was it the International Year of Light and light-based technologies, it was an outstanding year of astronomical achievement, culminating with the magnificent New Horizons photos of Pluto. It was also 100 years since the Theory of General Relativity was published, and 50 years since the Cosmic Background Radiation was discovered.Australia also broke a couple of astronomical world records: The most people stargazing across Australia, and in a single location at ANU. One of the organisers of this world record was Tom Gordon, a science communicator at The University of Sydney who runs Kickstart Physics (Instagram), which are physics workshops aimed at year 12 science students and teachers. Tom, along with Christie McMonigal and Shane Hengst, runs the STEMPunk podcast, chatting about science communication and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM): Communicating scientifically with science communicators.Who better to talk to about this splendid year in Physics than Tom?Listen in here: Songs in this episode (in order of play - all Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0)): Sharks with Lasers by spinmeister;Red Giant by Fireproof_Babies;Fate of the Sun by Fireproof_Babies;Beyond Jupiter - Instrumental by Ivan Chew;Spaced Invaders 2011 (90 BPM) by coruscate
Happy Halloween from the HMN crew! As a special surprise, Matt forced Scott and Adam to watch one of his favorite Halloween films, Spaced Invaders. We don't want to spoil the fun, but Scott and Adam were less than pleased with this turn of events. Dust off your Martian bomber jacket and practice up on your best pop culture voice impressions, it's time to blow this turd up!
In this episode of Forgotten Flix, Joel, Peter, Darrell and special guest co-host Heath, are remembering Spaced Invaders (1990)! Synopsis: We're moving from the city back to the country. But we're keeping it in the comedy/horror vein. Okay, okay. I can hear you. Tonight's putrid tale isn't really horror at all, but it does take place on All Hallow's Eve.
