Hey Goons!  This is our final Monday of TroMarch, so what better way to end a solid month of debauchery than with the Mickey Mouse of Troma, himself, Toxie.  That's right, Doug, Jason and Ade talk all things Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger Part IV.  Co-written by Trent Haaga and directed by Lloyd Kaufman, this installment follows the Toxic Avenger, who must defend his friends from his own alternate universe Doppelganger, The Noxious Offender.  While this one is a wonky, offensive, vomit-inducing flick, it's really funny and Ade points out that there is a social commentary, so it's all okay. As per usual, trigger warnings throughout, so watch it at your own risk. It's also a lot of fun–if you can sit through South Park, you can sit and laugh through this, too. I dare say 95% of the public has not heard of the "Killjoy" franchise. From Charles Band's Full Moon Features, this is bottom of the barrel entertainment. While the series starts out as horror, it switches to horror-comedy by the third movie. The best film in the bunch is the fifth-- "Killjoy's Psycho Circus". Dont expect these movies to make any sense. Just enjoy the over the top performances of Trent Haaga (as Killjoy) and Victoria de Mare (as Betty Boop).  And for the food/drink tie in, Killjoy Drinks provides a wide selection of non alcoholic beverages in every category: wine, beer/ale, liquors, mixes, etc. Check them out at killjoydrinks.com   Photo Credit: Here

Mary returns to help Caitlin cover a controversial movie: 2008's Dead Girl. Some have pushed it away, considering it misogynist and repulsive, but both Mary and I think there's solid feminist messaging in this one, even if some scenes are hard to watch. We look at toxic masculinity, the ways class and sexism connect, and the illusion of "the nice guy." We also talk about the figure who originated the idea of creating a captive sex zombie: Jeffrey Dahmer. Creeps all around! Go, Dead Girl, go! Zombie chomp an incel.

On this edition of Parallax Views, for nearly 50 years Troma has been the independent movie studio with an uncompromising vision that has alternately grossed out, offended, and entertained audiences from around the world with such features as The Toxcic Avenger franchise, the Class of Nuke Em High series, Troma's War, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, Tromeo and Juliet (penned by James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy fame), and, most recently, #ShakespeareShitstorm among others! They've also distributed such madcap films as Surf Nazis Must Die, Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town (starring before-he-was-famous Billy Bob Thornton), and Monster in the Closet (starring a before-he-was-famous Paul Walker) as well as such challenging and controversial cinema as Story of a Junkie, Combat Shock, and the experimental films of Giuseppe Andrews (Detroit Rock City, Cabin Fever). Joining us to discuss the little movie studio that could is Lloyd Kaufman, co-founder of Troma alongside Michael Herz. Be forewarned, Lloyd is irreverent, non-pc, and speaks his mind. As I say in the show intro "You will be triggered". In the course of our conversation Lloyd and I discuss a number of topics including what a Troma film is (for the unfamiliar), how Lloyd went from attending Yale in the hopes of becoming a social worker to catching the film bug, whether or not people confuse Troma for being a right-wing "shock jock" enterprise like Breitbart or the antic of Steve Bannon, Hollywood's silence on the New Jim Crow laws of Georgia, Lloyd's appearance on the Morton Downey Jr. Show, the influence of French cinema and Auteur Theory on Lloyd and Troma's work, Troma films as being steeped in satire and often based on events and social issues of the day, the influence of Andy Warhol on Lloyd and the Troma's movie Sugar Cookies (starring cult actress and Warhol factory girl Mary Woronov), working on the big budget Hollywood movie The Final Countdown w/ Kirk Douglas, working on John G. Avildsen's Rocky and Saturday Night Fever, C. Wright Mills' Power Elite theory and Lloyd's theory of the elite, the problem of Hollywood, the influence of Stan Lee and Marvel on Troma, Lloyd's socialist relatives and their influence on him growing up (we talk about Cuba, Fidel Castro, etc.!), Lloyd's love of the underdog, LGBTQ+ fans of Troma, Lloyd's appearance in The Last Blockbuster, a story about Lloyd's problem with Hollywood involving the great actor and writer Trent Haaga, and much, much more.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. What would you do for easy money? Fifty dollars to drink a shot of tequila quicker than your friend? Three hundred dollars to break the rules at a go-go club? Over four thousand to hook up with a perfect ten? What about $250,000? That's what the new film, Cheap Thrills, ponders as two friends meet up with a wealthy couple that seems like they are still living the frat and sorority life. Craig, highly educated yet recently unemployed, is about to be evicted from his apartment. With a wife and young child, he feels the crunch of the awful economy and is worried that days from now he'll land up on the street. On a chance encounter at a dive bar, he meets Vince, an old high school friend, while drinking away his sorrows. Suddenly a flashy and wealthy couple invite the two over where they begin playing drinking games for free money. Soon however the four enter into a strange and not so innocent night out about town. Starring genre favorites Pat Healy and Sara Paxton as well as standouts Ethan Embry and David Koechner, the film is one scary and bizarre thriller. Intentionally or not, the film asks questions about human motivation, faithfulness to friend and family, the class system, grading one's dignity with both desire and desperation, as well as today's economics; the wealthy one percent and the rest of us. Co-written by Trent Haaga, and directed by screenwriter E.L. Katz, the film won numerous awards on the festival circuit with grand praise from critics. Dark Discussions discusses this new film and whether it is one of the year's early favorites for top genre flick of the year. Welcome to Episode 005 of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Once again Philip and Gordon discuss the flesh eaters known so affectionately as the walking dead and zombies. Within this episode, less familiar zombie films are brought to the attention to the listeners. Unlike the George A. Romero films and the other more well known franchises such as Resident Evil, zombie movies have been copied, ripped off, or simply reinvented by both great talents in the horror genre as well as the occasional hack. Our hosts discuss three films each that any horror or zombie aficionado should see if they haven’t seen yet. Gordon focuses on the smaller film where there is no zombie apocalypse in sight. His three recommendations are Grace, directed by Paul Solet and starring the beautiful Jordan Ladd; Deadgirl written by Troma veteran Trent Haaga; and an entry from across the pond in Norway entitled Dead Snow. Philip focuses on three older films filled with kinetic mayhem, a Spanish/English joint production sometimes known as The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue; Ryuhei Kitamura of Midnight Meat Train renown and his extremely wild zombie film Versus; and Cannibal Ferox’s famed director Umberto Lenzi’s Nightmare City. But what about books and audio? Zombies are now appearing on page and paper, nook and nano. They’ve invaded libraries and computer desktops, perhaps easier than it had been for them to overrun malls, farm houses, and cemeteries. Our hosts talk about this new phenomena where zombie literature may have become as prolific as vampire and haunted house tales. Such authors and editors as Joe McKinney, Jonathan Maberry, Ben Tripp, Brian Keene, David Moody, Kim Paffenroth, and Stephen Jones are dissected. Titles as diverse as Stephen King’s The Cell, Jonathan Maberry’s Patient Zero, and Stephen Jones’ Zombie Apocalypse are dismembered. And a nod to the small publishing house Permuted Press gets a bite from our hosts. But wait, what was that you heard on your iPod? Zombie podcasts? Listeners beware, Dark Discussions welcomes you.
