As horror fans, it's hard enough trying to keep up with all the movies—let alone the memorabilia and collectibles—but just imagine having to live with one of us!  In this episode, we've invited our wives onto the show to share their perspectives—not just on living with a slightly obsessive fan, but on how they've come to embrace the genre themselves. You'll hear how they became fans in their own right, and what kinds of films still give them the shivers. As you'll learn, being a horror fan has evolved into a shared experience—a communal passion that binds us together. While we might not all love the same titles, we all agree on one thing: this genre rules. We welcome Kat AuBuchon, Jenn Glonek, and Dawn Kitley as they join us to help Discover the Horror! Films Mentioned in this episode: August Underground (2001), August Underground's Mordum (2003), Cannibal Ferox (1981), Carcinoma (2014), Deadly Games aka Dial Code Santa Clause (1989), Demoniacs (1974), The Descent (2005), Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), Frankenstein (1931), Friday the 13th (1980), Funny Games (1997), The Godfather (1972), Gods of the Deep (2023), Godzilla (1954), Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981),  Halloween V: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989), Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987), High Tension (2003), Hostel (2005), Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009), Inside (2007), Longlegs (2024), Mandy (2018), Nekromantik (1988), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Psycho (1960), Oddity (2024), One Missed Call (2008), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), The Redsin Tower (2006), The Rule of Jenny Penn (2025), Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975), Scream (1996), A Serbian Film (2010), Session 9 (2001), Sleepaway Camp (1983), Society (1989), Sting of Death (1966), The Substance (2024), The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014), Terrifier (2016), Terror Firmer (1999), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), Three on a Meathook (1972), Tromeo and Juliet (1996), Two Evil Eyes (1990), Without Warning (1980), Z.A.A.T.

Troma has long been known for making films designed to provoke their audience, but have they ever taken things too far? Has the studio that gave us Bloodsucking Freaks and Terror Firmer ever outdone itself? We're not sure, but 2000's Unspeakable certainly comes close to crossing those boundaries. A low-budget, transgressive affair, Unspeakable follows a grieving father as he stalks the streets looking for victims in hopes that spilling the blood of the city's marginalized will reunite him with his dead daughter...who he also happens to lust after. Unspeakable is a mean film without a doubt, but is it any good?

Let's give this another go shall we? After penning what was actually an admittedly gnarly episode description to kick off 2001 A Space Augusty, it was all lost. Let's see Jake parody himself. *cracks fingers* This film is James Gunn's directorial debut, after writing for Troma with such films as Tromeo and Juliet and Terror Firmer, then Scooby Doo for Warner Bros. He went on to do Guardians of the Galaxy and after he was thoroughly swagger jacked by DC with their feeble Suicide Squad from 2016, he returns triumphantly to the house of Warner to grab that franchise by the ears and make mouth love to. The Suicide Squad comes out this week, fun coincidence. Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle) plays Bill Pardy and will be returning to work with Gunn as The Detachable Kid ("T.D.K."). Similarly, Michael Rooker, who plays Grant Grant in this, will be coming to the DC Extended Cinematic Universe as Savant. We talk about Elizabeth Banks' career, comedic chops, and how she may have played the part of Rita Repulsa, she did not look it, if you catch our meaning. We also talk Gunn's burgeoning directing style in this and how he stayed clear of troops by some of his collaborators like Zach Snyder, whom he penned Dawn of the Dead for. The effects in this film are stupendous and blend CGI and practical elements seamlessly. We talk about how the marketing materials failed the film in this regard, because the quality film you get is not depicted in the promotion. Did you know that James Gunn was in a band called The Icons? They do not appear on this soundtrack, but they did make it onto his sophomore film, Super. The music for the film was actually done by Tyler Bates, who has done everything from Tammy & The T-Rex to the John Wick trilogy. . . (yes, I am purposefully leaving out the Rob Zombie Halloween films). Last, we talk about all of the references to classic films such as The Thing and Big Trouble in little China with the Mayor, Jack MacReady, Tremors with the high school being named after Earl Bassat, Slugs, Shivers, The Brood, Night of the Creeps, Society, and even manga with Uzumaki by Junji Ito. This week's "Hidden Track" is Out Front by Life Force off their album, Hope And Defiance, on New Age Records. It features a vocal spot by Tim McMahon of Mouthpiece/Hands Tied/Search. They will be playing Promcore festival at The Vanguard in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on October 22nd and 23rd. Terror Firmer is the latest moneymaking Dali-esque masterpiece unleashed by director Lloyd Kaufman and the Troma Team. Their trademark manic humor combines with a new darker sensibility to create the latest in a legendary line of genre-bending classics. Inspired by Lloyd Kaufman's book, “All I Need To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger” (Penguin Putnam), Terror Firmer is the most action packed, most personal, most bizarre, and most commercial celluloidal adventure in the 25-year history of Troma Entertainment. Honored by Film Festivals the world over, Terror Firmer has firmly established Troma as THE fount of mass appeal alternative cinema, the world's source for something challenging and original.

Bobby Bonz is back for a trifecta of Season 1 appearances, just in time as we're coming near the end of the inaugural regular season of the Friends of TatB Fantasy League.  Bits, and fantasy updates and games ensue, all surrounding today's Flick Pick, "Terror Firmer." Considered the peak of Troma Pictures artistic visions (By Twitty and Twitty alone), this movie challenges our suspension of disbelief, as well as our gag reflexes at times. Somehow an adaptation of a nonfiction book, a murder mystery, and an essay on gender roles all at once, this one leads to some hilarious banter.  " I'm appalled and I love it." " This movies grasp of continuity lacks any continuity." " ... The first of many soft core porn segments, as is Troma tradition."

As a tie in to our event, Toxic Avengers #PodGame, we humbly submit our review of The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. For those of you not following the announcements on instagram, Toxic Avengers #PodGame was Jake's idea to coincide with the release of Avengers: End Game, but with horror's favorite mutated monster hero: Toxie. Be sure to check out Cult Classic Mania (reviewing The Toxic Avenger), Gorelords (reviewing The Toxic Avenger Part II), Terror Trio (reviewing Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV), and Copulators Die First (reviewing episodes of Toxic Crusaders).  In this film, Toxie (Ron Fazio/ John Altamura) has a sumo duel with the Devil (Rick Collins), in a vague video game format, which involves the green winged beast being peed on. While that sounds awesome, it comes after a gauntlet of watching Toxie try to keep real jobs to pay eye surgery for his girlfriend, Claire (Phoebe Legere). This film and Part II were originally intended to be one film; however, given issues with the run time, the film was split. You can tell that there are filler scenes and some black magic trickery to stretch the plot like a lumpy Stretch Armstrong (or Vac-Man if you remember those).  While not the pinnacle of Llyod Kaufman's (Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, Class of Nuke 'Em High, Terror Firmer, Rocky) filmography, the film is definitely work the watch-- if only to get to the fourth installment. Also, the melt scene by Jerry Macaluso (Darkman, Mystery Men, Little Nicky) is surprisingly awesome.   This week's "Hidden Track" was graciously provided by Bat$hit!crazy (@batshitcrazy_band). Be sure to stay tuned after the episode to hear their song Ellen's Grave.  https://campsite.bio/cultclassicmania, https://linktr.ee/gorelords If you ever have feedback or recommendations on future episodes, please let us know at slasherspod@gmail.com. Is gore required in horror movies? On this podcast we discuss Zombi 2, Dr. Butcher MD and how Italian directors became known for shocking gory films. We discuss movies and magazines that influenced us, such as Friday the 13th and Fangoria. In Tenebre, an arm is sliced off and blood splatters absolutely everywhere. Not every film needs gore to be effective, but it helps with the horror experience. Also, the French gore new wave, Inside AKA l'interieur and Martyrs. Martyrs is one of the most harrowing films ever made. It's worth seeing once, but it's damn-near impossible to see it again. Cutting Moments also discussed. We also discuss protracted torture scenes in mob shows/The Sopranos and Marathon Man and appendages lopped off in Terror Firmer. What kind of gore gets to you? We look at eye gouging, needles and the Brandon Cronenberg (son of David) film Antiviral.

Lloyd Kaufman (born December 30, 1945) is a New York-born film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor and all around mensch. With producer Michael Herz, "Uncle Lloyd" as he's affectionately known, is the co-founder of the amazing Troma Entertainment film studio, and the director of many of their feature films, including Terror Firmer, Class of Nuke 'em High, The Toxic Avenger and Tromeo and Juliet. If you haven't checked out any of these, you owe it to yourself to do so. Lloyd Kaufman is the author of All I Needed To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger (with James Gunn), Make Your Own Damn Movie (with Adam Jahnke and Trent Haaga) and The Toxic Avenger: The Novel (with Adam Jahnke). He was kind enough to write the excellent foreword for our book, Death by Umbrella! The 100 Weirdest Horror Movie Weapons. On this episode Jeff K, co-host of the Really Awful Movies Podcast, got a chance to chat with Lloyd, a guy he's known for quite a while. They cover quite a bit of bit of ground in this interview. The Troma co-founder talks about the Sony scandal, Troma fans, the state of the movie, industry, Joey Ramone, Troma studios, tattoos, The Toxic Avenger and of course, soul-sucking devil-worshiping mega media conglomerates!!!

This week Gill & Roscoe get Tromatized! Between us we watched a Herculean 20 movies from the Troma oeuvre including "Troma's War" (1988), "Tromeo & Juliet" (1997), "Terror Firmer" (1999), "Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead" (2006) and "Father's Day" (2011). Along the way we also discuss Nymphoid Barbarians, the music of Smokey Miles AKA Count Smokula, and children's faces indelibly covered in green ink. Gill gives us his best impression of Bane from Batman 3, and another of Roscoe's Downfall-like rants at Gill gets erased from history forever. If, like us, you're at war with the corporate, bureaucratic and labour elites, feel free to join us on Twitter at @bodacioushorror and @gillrockatansky, or search for us on Facebook.
